Not expected. Great Service and outstanding matching dinner food suggestions. Will definitely come back

Food was lovely Service was not Like similar reviews on here we were also pushed to have multiple dishes (although we came for a late lunch we weren't hugely hungry) we ended up ordering 3 small dishes and 2 mains instead of the 6/7 dishes your encouraged to order. And the dishes are not as small as made out we were full by the end of our meal, didn't have room for dessert. Not that we were asked. In fact no body bothered asking how our food was or if we wanted anything else throughout our meal.

Our first visit at tropea last night and it was as brilliant as we expected from thier reputation. The staff were attentive and genuinely interested in any feedback as to how they can improve even further with a new dish added to the menu. We will definitely be back

We've dined 3 times at Tropea now and each time the food and service have been exceptional and we've absolutely loved our experience. I have a severe peanut allergy and every time the team at Tropea are so professional and thoughtful with allergies and are happy to run through dish ingredients and offer adjustments - in fact they called us in advance when we visited most recently check my comfort with nut presence on the tables / in my partners dishes. We so appreciate the effort the Tropea team go to make us feel assured that they take allergies seriously - and it enables us to enjoy eating such amazing food in a lovely setting all the more

5* from start to finish. Stand out dishes; the Monkfish tail, Squid ink risotto and fried courgette flowers. All the team make you feel like you’re at home, from the minute you enter to the moment you leave. You would be hard pressed to find better in Birmingham. Absolutely will be returning! *Cocktails, even those not on the menu, were delicious!

The restaurant was able to accommodate my husband and I for a last minute booking which we appreciated. Based on the high reviews, the food and desert did not disappoint. The only let down was the constant upselling from our waiter. As someone working in marketing and sales, it’s easy to “read the room” when a customer isn’t interested. But on this occasion, our waiter would go as far and explain the menu is designed to order from each section to give time for the next dish to be prepared. I explained I had a late lunch and was happy to share one antipasti as we waited for our main meal. He still asked if we wanted two instead. In all my years of dining, I’ve never found a restaurant that insisted on having more than what is asked for. This review isn’t to deter anyone from visiting, the food was delicious but prepare to be pushed to get more than what you clearly asked for and firmly push back if it’s not what you want.

Thank you for making our anniversary dinner at Tropea so special! The food, service and atmosphere was exceptional. The small touches including the personalised menu didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you once again, we can’t wait to visit again.

A mouthwatering experience from start to finish. Some great and surprising combinations in some of the dishes just absolutely work….Burrata with grilled peach just one fabulous example. The lamb main was the finest lamb I’ve ever eaten. Entire team friendly and engaging, lovely atmosphere, already looking forward to my next visit. Well done Ben and team Tropea 🇮🇹

Went out for daughters birthday nice place, food great but way to expensive plus a 25% service charge, parking is also an issue, I'm not a tight wad but £4.50 for tap water!

Tropea is a good place for a nice meal out and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and in particular, the Cornish squid risotto & tiramisu. They were all excellent with the exception of the very vinegary panzanella. A bit on the pricy side but we think it is worth it.

Wonderful independent Italian restaurant - beautiful food and excellent service. We visited to celebrate a special occasion and loved the fun and thoughtful touches. Highly recommend!

Ok 2nd visit here despite us booking an early table service & atmosphere was great . UPDATE - I would like to add that since posting my review, the owner of Tropea has reached out to me. I received a very honest response from him and his apologies for our experience. He said that they have listened to customer feedback and the issues raised have now been resolved. I shall definitely be revisiting, as I said in my review the food was really delicious. We just ended up with far too much! So please do not let my review put you off trying Tropea. I had been really looking forward to trying Tropea, especially as it seems to always have such fantastic reviews. Our experience was not so great, I felt that we were upsold at every opportunity. I wanted to order a couple of things to share and I said that I wouldn’t want a main after the pasta course but the waitress was insistent that we hadn’t ordered much and that the portions were small. We took her advice, not at a small price I should add, and as a result we ordered far too much food. Although the starters and the pastas were excellent, we found the two main dishes rather underwhelming. We didn’t eat these, we did ask to take them home, they ended up in the bin though as neither of us really fancied them the next day. It’s a shame, because we did really enjoy the rest of the meal and I would probably go back and stand our ground this time. It just really felt like we were being squeezed for every penny we had, not a pleasant experience.

We’ve been waiting to try this place for SO long. Finally managed to get a table for my partner’s birthday and honestly could not have faulted the place. A quaint little restaurant, tucked away in Harbourne. The staff, ambience, and of course the food were all impeccable. Even down to the personalised menu (see photo)! We opted for many small plates, including the burrata, focaccia, prawns, ragu, artichoke just to name a few and every dish was smashed out of the park, you can taste the freshness of each ingredient. The wine was incredible and the staff helped us pair a bottle perfectly with our meal. The price point is incredibly reasonable, for the quality of food and service received. Thank you to all at Tropea, easily one of my favourite spots in Birmingham.

Everything was perfect! This was our first time here and we can't wait to go back. The cocktails were great. We had an amaretto sour (10/10). The food was an explosion of different flavours and textures, each bite different. Service was spot on, the attention to detail was great. Book a table, go visit and experience an Italian culinary delight.

Best Italian-style restaurant I tried in Birmingham. The pasta with ragú is as good as the one you can get in Italian (I'm Italian myself so I can vouch for that), very good the starters and the meat/fish mains, nice the desserts. Drinks were very good too. I went there for a 5 years anniversary, which I specified in the booking; they printed a "happy anniversary" on our menus and they also complimented a nice little dessert for the occasion, so we were very happy and impressed to the attention to details. The service was great, the staff is very friendly and very professional. Very nice atmosphere, good choice of music. The price is fair for the quality and quantity of foods and drinks. I'm definitely coming back to try more dishes and I strongly recommend to visit it.

O wouldn't give it a 5 stars like a most reviews. Service was good, especially young lad, very attentive and helpful with suggestions on what to order. They recommend 6-7 dishes for 2, which is way too much, in my opinion. Sharing plates as well. Was quite difficult to pick meals as my wife and I have very different tastes. Food wasn't OMG 5 stars, was ok, nothing we tried blew us away.

Wow, just amazing! There is nowhere else in Birmingham where you can get food of this quality for this value. If you are visiting Tropea you have to indulge properly, 6-7 dishes is recommended, but if you are extra hungry or a big eater I’d recommend getting closer to 10. Ox cheek, burrata and bombolone were a personal highlight. The service was excellent, drinks were flowing and plates taken away seamlessly. The music creates extra ambiance as you dance to both that first bite of food and the introduction of a popular chorus. If you haven’t been, change that!

Nice place with excellent food, generous portions, very good wine including plenty of decent wine by the glass so you can pair your choices as you go. Every dish was good, even the focaccia was great. The recommended '6-7 dishes for 2' is a lot and was maybe 1 or 2 dishes more than we needed. Odd 1980's play list and slighlty aloof service detracted a little bit...

I was a little sceptical that this restaurant had been so highly rated…but it proved to be very worthy of 5 stars. Really well cooked and well presented food (sharing plates mainly) with some really delicious flavours. Very attentive good service too. Absolutely I can recommend (£50-£60 per head including wine, service and a lot of food!).

The restaurant is outstanding! We had 7 dishes to share between the 2 of us, and couldn’t pick our favourite because they were all genuinely exceptional. That being said, my partner doesn’t usually enjoy pasta and was blown away by the parpadelle! The service was relaxed and friendly but attentive. This was our first visit to the restaurant and we have already started planning our next!

Absolutely one of my all time favourites. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the drinks and the food are delicious. Inventive, brilliantly crafted small plates and the most incredible fresh gluten free pasta I’ve ever eaten.

My husband and I are real foodies and we are lucky to have dined in some of the world’s best restaurants but Tropea would definitely be up there with them. The food is gorgeous (hello black truffle pasta), drinks and wine are curated, and the staff are overwhelmingly lovely. The atmosphere of the place stands it apart from others, always busy but not crowded, full of people that want to be there. It’s just a happy happy place :-)

We stayed in the restaurant for a dinner for about 1 and half hour. We have been asked 4 or 5 times if we finished eating by 2 staff. That was not very pleasant.

I had a wonderful dinner at Tropea and tried 4 dishes. This is my new favourite restaurant. The food was simply amazing. Not at all surprising that getting a reservation here during the weekend is almost impossible! Totally worth it.

First of all, the food is INCREDIBLE but the staff make it. Everyone was utterly lovely which made the evening perfect. Onto the food itself. It is tapas-style, where you get a number of dishes to share between you. Everything we ate was delicious (my favourite was the truffle pasta which was worth the wait!) The atmosphere is really nice, with good music playing and it is really cozy in the restaurant itself. Would definitely come back!

Wow wow wow! We snook in on an early Tuesday evening. Place was buzzing already. Delicious cocktails, super friendly service and absolutely epic food. Visited for my Parents 50th Wedding Anniversary and we all really enjoyed it! Service right drone the moment we walked in was brilliant, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Our server helped us with the menu and made some recommendations and advised when we had ordered to much! Every single thing we had was amazing, great flavours and really tasty! Was one of the best meals I have had for a long time, the pasta dishes were our favourites. I would really recommend this place and will be back for sure.

Didn’t really know what to expect when we booked for my sons birthday but we were really pleasantly surprised. Small and cosy, informal and welcoming. Staff are chatty (but not too much), very accommodating, attentive and obviously excited by the food. It’s an unusual menu and you are recommended to basically try everything, family style. Good comes out of the kitchen beautifully presented in a bit of a tapas style, small or larger plates and when it’s ready. I think we all thought it wasn’t going to be enough but it was. To be honest the dishes were all wonderful and I couldn’t have eaten more of all of it! We choose the a carafe (or two) or the house wine and red. Thought the red was better but both were lovely. Overall just a really fabulous restaurant for a special night or a relaxing Friday supper. Loved it.

This is head and shoulders the best dining experience I have had in a very long time, the food was stunning, presented perfectly and served at the table with great knowledge. It seems wrong to select one dish above the rest, BUT the Buratta cheese with honey roasted figs was to die for, especially with the stunning bread to mop up the basil oil. WIll I return, try stopping me - you really do need to book in advance, it was fully booked on a Tuesday night and we only just got in on the "standby" list.

Three of us went here this evening after waiting almost three months for the first available booking. The food was amazing, so full of different flavours and textures, every mouthful was a feast for the taste buds. But best of all, the staff were truly amazing too. One member of our trio was taken ill and started to pass out (nothing whatsoever to do with the food! ) and every member of staff could not have been more helpful and caring throughout the whole ordeal, calling an ambulance and making sure we had help at all times if it was needed, even checking that we were all ok and not just our poorly friend. Luckily she was eventually well enough to be taken home. Thank you so much to every member of staff, your kindness and help was very much appreciated.

Had a wonderful birthday meal at Tropea. First time I've visited and I can see why its tricky to get a table! On paper the food is unfussy but oh my goodness the taste is incredible. Every single thing we ordered was divine and not a crumb was left. Cocktails are excellent too! Service and atmosphere were relaxed and friendly and it was a delightful experience. They also highlight special occasions which is a nice touch. 100% will go back.

Tropea is quite amazing - our lunch there was one of the best we’ve ever had. Everything about it was perfect: the comfortable setting, the friendly and knowledgeable staff, the drinks (an excellent elderflower spritz), and the food - wow, the food! Our waiter encouraged us to select a few dishes per person to be shared, and they arrived spread over a period of time, giving us a chance to savour each new flavour in turn. They were all quite excellent, but the burrata with figs and the red prawns were stand-out favourites, along with the chocolate sorbet. Altogether a very special experience. We are all set to go again.

Amazing, amazing food. Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Every dish was incredible. Perfect service and they recommended the dishes based on what you both fancied eating/vegetarian needs.
