Had Fish and Chips for lunch , was really disappointed the meal was cooked ok but I have never had such a small portion of fish in my life . My son in law said I have seen more fish in a fish finger and he was right . I was hungury and eat the meal hoping that should the waiter enquire if everything was ok I could show him my concern . He never showed up , when he came to collect the plate I told him I never complain but in this case was very disappointed with the fish portion size . He said he would tell the kitchen staff and that was that we left . Just a warning avoid food at this pub .

One star for the kids pizza meal which went down well, the pizza was super cheesy! The other star was for the beautifully cooked lamb in the special board lamb curry. Super tender. Sadly the flavour of the curry sauce was not a curry and not even that nice a tasting casserole. Such a shame, could have been really super.

Came for a panini and chips nothing complicated my husband order chicken and cheddar panini for myself instead I got cheddar tomato and pesto they said he ordered wrong we've never ate pesto ever and I’m not a fan of tomato either anyway I was met with 2 ppl strong you’ve wrongly ordered but would you like me to take it back so it’s not wasted ??!? Excuse me ?? What does that even mean ? She then went on to say my husband made the mistake accused him said that he was lying the bar lady also ignored him and told the manager all he did was ask if it could be swapped as she had taken the order wrong the owner I think ( older lady at bar ) offered discount on our next order… well we come to hope all the time camping - first time eating here and will be our last now absolutely disguising to treat a customer that way

Having passed this place several times my wife and I thought we'd give it a go Friday night. The place was empty, not a good sign. Staff were very friendly, and quick to let us know food was finishing soon.... pretty early really. My wife ordered gammon, I went for red coconut curry. Gammon itself was very average, my curry I believe was coconut based???. We eat it ,as we were very hungry but won't be returning.

We stayed in a B+B nearby and we decided to try our luck going to this pub for dinner with little expectation. We ordered a steak pie and a pineapple pork and surprisingly they were cooked at a very high standard, and with a huge portion. The place is clean and even the sauces were individually packed. The place is pretty big and we did not feel very noisy and enjoyed our dinner in a very peaceful environment. No hesistation to recommend to anybody going to go to Hope and wish to have a nice meal.

Stayed on a local campsite and walked into Hope for food, but 1 pub was packed and the other didn't do food due to a refurb. Decided to walk to the Travellers, and glad we did. Food excellent, well cooked and decent priced, good selection of drinks. Nice beer garden if you had kids and plenty of space. Will be back when visiting again

Called in with 8 friends after booking. Bar staff, although pleasant enough seemed clueless. I ordered a pheasant curry that was , let's face it, chicken. The curry itself was supposed to be coconut based, but was more like a well watered down tin of generic tasteless supermarket masala. Beer was a bit uninspiring but on the plus side my sticky toffee pudding was pretty good. The rest of the party seemed impressed with their mains, but gave a unanimous thumbs down to the Bakewell puds. We were sat near the kitchen, and the constant pinging of the microwave tells you all you need to know

The pub was used by the Family both to stay and for a funeral "reception". Staff were superb and nothing too much trouble. buffet was excellent and a good selection of food plus "blow the diet" cakes. Drink prices reasonable in line with current costs. First visit to the pub for food. Called at 2pm to book a table for 6 people at 6pm Sunday evening. Told didn't need to book as wouldn't be busy. Arrived shortly after 6pm, ordered drinks for 6 and took menu's from the bar, chose food and went to order to be told kitchen was closed. This was around 6.25pm. They offered desserts only which wasn't what a hungry family with two children called in for. Having ordered drinks we couldn't just leave to go elsewhere. Website said food until 7pm. Explained to bar tender this was poor as I had called to check earlier. Not interested in the slightest. Asked to speak to a manager. No one bothered to come over. Bar tender just ignored us and stayed out of sight. Genuinely felt like we were just a massive inconvenience and they would prefer to have no customers. Would have spent £100+. Pubs closing left, right and centre. Awful experience. Why would I ever bother to go back?

Parents are nearby at laneside caravan park, about 5 minutes walk away on the main road. 1st time we have been in and from the outside to the inside, then to the beer garden it was such a lovely country pub. It was a nice sunny day so sat outside and went in to order I shared with my wife the sweet chilli chicken with cheddar and chips at £7.75, others had chilli beef nachos for 2. Also 1 had the ploughman’s which had far to much cheese. Food was good but staff a bit not with it and not too happy.

We were planning to go and eat here every day with our 4 children during our camping stay, however on the first day we went and, despite the sign saying if we have food allergies speak to them, they could not accomodate our 9 year old sons dairy and egg allergy apart from to offer gammon and chips. He is 9 not 70 so that is not on his preferred foods list, and he certainly would not have been happy eating it for a week! We were also disappointed that despite there only being one other couple dining, the chef didn't come and discuss options but just kept sending his waiter forwards and backwards to say the various things that were not suitable (sausages, chicken nuggets etc). Therefore we decided to eat elsewhere for the week.

After a walk around Howden and Derwent dams we decided to call in at the Travellers rest for a drink and a sandwich and to make use of the lovely outside seating areas and gardens. However the chef said no ! , no food available after 2PM in this 19th Century establishment. So we had a drink from the limited range of uninspiring offerings and enjoyed the garden and sunshine. The draught Coors light was the best of a bad choice. Decent value and the one lady who was there all on her own was very pleasant and helpful however somewhat stretched and embarrassed by the volume of customers wanting drinks and asking for the unavailable food on such a lovely day. A strange place that seems to be good at throwing money away and little else with a lovely outside area and gardens that the dog enjoyed.

What a disappointment today’s visit turned out to be. Ordered two Lamb Roast dinners and after about 20 minutes we were told there was no lamb left and would we be OK with chicken. Another long wait and our meals arrived which comprised of a piece of fried chicken, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, Yorkshire pudding and two roast potatoes with a splash of gravy. I thought it was a child’s meal or they had introduced rationing in advance of Brexit. I would have expressed my disappointment personally had anyone bothered to check if we were happy with our meals. I did observe other diners sat a tables that had not been cleared from previous customers and staff bringing meals out and returning to the kitchen empty handed. We had a excellent meal here during last summer however it’s gone downhill and we will not be calling again.

Fish and chips - they had a hint of something that the fish may have been kept near. Not good. The steak pie was ok but the wasn't properly cooked and had been flamed to give it a burnt effect. the mushy peas were luke warm. the chips were OK. The food in total was AWFUL. Called at the Travellers Rest for lunch earlier today with my friend, and we both agreed that the food was way over priced. We each had a pork burger, supposed to be with apple, and chips , and at £9.95 per person the food should have been very good. Instead of that, both of our burgers were burned , and very stodgy. Also the chips were certainly frozen and not home made , as they should have been . It is not any wonder that the place was almost empty. Never again.

The barman, while very polite, waited for me to look over the menu and then only when I went to order said that it as it was past 2pm (a few minutes) they were no longer serving. Even a cold snack such as sandwich was not possible 'as it would set a precedent' (who to as the place we fairly empty?). There is no indication outside that food is only served until 2pm. So no points for flexiblity or 'customer comes first'. Given that there is plenty of competition and other welcoming places to eat in the area this is one I will never visit again.

We visited on Monday evening for dinner. The Travellers Rest is a very large pub with great potential. Unfortunately when we were there, there were very few other guests. With a lot of empty tables, sparse furnishings and bright lighting it felt a bit soulless and empty. It felt more like a youth club than a pub.The menu was basic and food disappointing. No salmon available so we ended up with a poor shepherds pie, microwaved to within an inch of its life, and a jacket potato. Very disappointing, we won't be back.

Having been to The Travellers Rest before, I had good memories of quality pub food. I even remember it being good enough to go back again in the same holiday. Being back in the area, I stopped in on a Thursday night for dinner. I really wished we hadn't. There were two staff on duty, one behind the bar and one waiting tables. Although both very friendly, they continued to chat whilst taking my food order - even talking over me as I tried to order. Ordering was difficult as they only accept orders at the bar, and a number of starters and mains were unavailable, causing me to keep having to return to my family to look for alternatives. Even after the order was finalised, a further starter was declared unavailable and yet another change was needed. Customer service was really, really poor at the bar. Friendliness does not make up for poor manners and inattentive service. The food arrived, and the starters were pretty average. The dips and condiments were either in sachets or served in small disposable plastic tubs, and there wasn't much of them. I ran out of the chilli dip almost immediately and was left to eat the greasy chicken goujons without it. Our main courses were "ok" but I had rice as an accompaniment and it was poorly drained and the plate was water logged. The only positive I have was the beer, which seemed well kept. The meal was thoroughly disappointing, and there are much better venues in very close proximity. We won't be back, and an eatery I remembered fondly has been crossed off my list. Such a shame.

We chose the TR because it had good access for wheelchairs. Nice pub which has been extended significantly over the last years. We went on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime and staff were friendly and helpful. The food was ok and was what you expect so I really dont have any complains. However I cant give it overall anymore that average. Still... Would go again.

I just returned from Travellers had a meal for my nephews birthday I had the vegetarian lasagna what a mistake don't get me wrong this is my second time there but not by option , back to the food expensive and very poor quality I would feel ashamed to sever such a tip of food on sheet of lasagna and about a tin of tomato pure nothing else the Italians will be very mad about it , staff wow the blond lady ask her for drinks and it is over I m not sure if she is the land lady but if she is please find a job where you don't deal with people , and if she is a member of staff sack her , for as as locals finding a good pub in the valley it is very hard better go to Castelton and you get bad food but the staff is fantastic, my advise please avoid this pub they have no clue and please sack your chef .

Had the 'home reared' lamb madras - regrettably one of the worst currys I have ever had - tasteless not in anyway a curry more a very bland stew ! How can a chef call this a madras ? Shocking everyone else's food ok but nothing exciting

Shame that some people may think that trip advisor is the only place for meaningful reviews. The recent (2013 ?) negative ones for this pub would swiftly be neutralised by a quick glance at the Google pub reviews (which I prefer as my reviews don't fall off the bottom of the list after a week). We called in here on our weekly hike and had large and good quality baguette sandwiches, chips & coleslaw. Price was the usual overpriced Peak District average but quality and value beat many of the other Peak pubs which charge the same level of pricing. Staff were friendly enough. Place was spacious, dog friendly and the England flags above the bar showed it not to be as pretentious, superior and snooty as some of the others I have tried around here.

It's a shame as this pub has such a lovely garden and the service is good, but the food was pretty bad. There were four of us in our party - four adults and two children. The children chose pizza and chips, which looked and tasted very average. The real disappointments were the pheasant curry, which tasted like a Vesta curry from the 70s (eugh!) and the puddings. Four of us ordered pud and they were all awful - microwaved and tasteless. Particularly bad, considering we were just a few miles from where it had supposedly been made, was the Bakewell pudding. My friend said it tasted like a car tyre. I would visit this pub again for a drink in the beer garden, but I wouldn't touch their food again.

This pub is large, with a good sized beer garden. The staff were helpful and the service was good, but the food was average. Fairly good value, perfect for a quick and simple meal.

Perhaps not the average review in the circumstances but I visited this roadside pub yesterday as part of a private party attending a funeral tea. Not the happiest of events but the staff were smart, everything well organised, good parking and everyone very helpful. I noticed a sign saying they had gluten free puddings on their normal menu which always makes me sit up and take notice. The buffet looked lovely but as a coeliac I had attended not expecting to eat anything (that wasnt really what I had gone for after all, but to pay respects to the family and the departed).... I hadnt told anyone I was on a gluten free diet as until the last minute I wasnt sure I would be able to attend, and because of the nature of the event I wasnt surprised to find I couldnt eat one thing on the buffet (i wasnt expecting to either) . In passing, I asked if there was any chance they could make me a gluten free sandwich, They thought the chef might have gone home already having put the buffet out but very kindly offered me a sandwich with the option of it being toasted. They very shortly brought me two rounds of perfectly cooked toasted gluten free sandwiches... (not always easy with gluten free bread for those who dont know). All afternoon, the staff were helpful, polite, and the sun even shone so we were able to sit i the lovely garden. I will certainly return to try out their gluten free food... with prior notice they are happy to adapt most of the standard menu but they do also have a few things on the menu that are on a "gluten free" section. I have also added this pub as a recommended place for my guest house guests to visit. Thank you everyone. Your help and friendliness was much appreciated.

With a group of four friends we stopped of here for our first lunch in the sun of the year, in a very pleasant garden. There was only one member of staff on and the place was fairly busy but she coped amazingly well and our food arrived quickly. for such reasonably priced food we were happily surprised at the quality and hope to enjoy more lunches in the sun here during the summer.

we called in after a visit to the Lady Bower, it was the closet place to eat from our B&B on the day that we visited was a little noisey but did not bother us, the staff were all very nice and polite, and we did not have to wait to long for our food, the food was cooked as we had asked for it to be cooked and could not find fault with it, in short the staff were very good the food was very good and the prices reasonable

Popped in for drinks whilst staying nearby. Very nice extensive garden and enjoyed our drinks in the sun - with numerous dogs (!) but not a problem. Didn't eat so can't comment but food coming out looked fine and was well received by diners close by. Inside was pleasant enough and staff were ok. Thought drink prices were high..... Nothing too special but better than average.

Went for a relaxed early dinner before heading out. Mrs had Thai fishcakes off the specials board which were OK, though the only Thai thing about them was the sweet chili dipping sauce. I had steak and ale pie after barman said it was a short crust pastry which I love. A bit disappointed to find a flaky pastry crust when it came out which I'm less fussed by. Beef was tender and tasty, but would have chosen something else if I'd known it was flaky pastry. The shepherd's pie looked good on the next table.

Stopping for lunch, our small group of motorcyclists made use of the beer garden however the outdoor furniture looked like it was about to collapse. I never entered inside so can't comment on anything else.Ordering a selection of sandwiches and drinks, they were reasonably quick to serve. Good food, brief stop and we were then on our merry way.

We visited at short notice for a meal. The Sir Loin steak that my wife ordered was cooked 'medium' exactly how we asked. I had fish and chips. The fish was clearly fresh and well cooked. However, the batter could have been crispier. The ice-cream we had for dessert was excellent (it was made on a local farm). Service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They were clearly keen to get it right and to please without being overbearing. The only downside was overhearing a chef swearing as we left. This was an exclamation just part of rather loud conversation...if I had had children with me I would have been very annoyed.

Ive just experienced the worst meal and service I've had in years the burger at 9 pounds was really very poor meat quality, very fatty and not cooked well, in fact if it wasn't reheated by a microwave, the chef should find an alternative career. Cheap bun and cheap chips. Funny how Real Burger kitchen can create these for a similar price and they're delicious.

We have been coming to the Travellers Rest for years as we stay either at Laneside or Hardhurst Farm with our caravan on a regular basis. What we loved about the food was that it was just a bit more than your average pub grub. There were always really different things on the menu which although a little pricey were exceptionally cooked, well presented and very filling. The staff were always friendly too. A couple of year ago the menu changed and had reverted to quite boring but we still came and had quite nice meals. On Friday night myself and my husband both ordered sweet and sour pork. Imagine the look on our faces when it was gammon as the pork part of it. Never had sweet and sour gammon before. The "chef" had obviously run out of pork fillet but had decided to use up some leftovers I think. We did tell the uninterested waitress and she said she'd tell the kitchen (like she knew what sort of pork should be in sweet and sour. There was no pineapple chunks, mange tout or peppers. So unless this pub gets a different chef we are not eating here again. For anybody in the area wanting to know where to eat the Old Hall in Hope have upped their game and their meals are lovely again now.

This was the third visit to the Travellers' Rest in 2 years, knowing we would get a good lunch here while out in the Peak District. We were not disappointed. Good portions and excellent food have been served on previous visits, and this was just as good. Even a basic toasted sandwich was very well done, very tasty and not too much for a senior citizen! Normal portions are very generous indeed, and taste superb. Food is locally sourced wherever possible, and the freshness of vegetables, wonderful flavour of meat (mainly local lamb) and extras deserved 5 stars. It wasn't 'fancy'; the more limited but excellent quality menu ensures there is something for every palate, very fresh and well prepared at a reasonable price.Service with a smile - faultless. Wonderful surroundings and plenty of space outside in summer months, good parking, disabled access all make this a 'must stop' place to consider. We certainly shall return, and quite soon.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon for a nice dinner. The location is good as is the outdoor seating area. Inside is a little tired and dirty windowsills with cobwebs but cosy and traditional. I ordered the lamb shanks which were supposed to come with redcurrant sauce but didn't. The lamb was supposed to be a speciality as the lambs are reared on site. There was no explanation as to why the sauce wasn't on the dish as described. It was served with mange tout - some undercooked, some overcooked and just 3 potatoes (which seemed a bit on the mean side). The lamb itself was disappointing. Hardly any meat on the bone and the meat I could get off was not tender as I'd have expected. My boyfriend had the steak and ale pie but was also disappointed with that and the chips. All in all, disappointing food for the money we paid. Would not return.

My partner and I were hungry on our way back from Surprise Valley after a good few hours walk and thought we'd drop in as it was on the way back to Tideswell where we were staying. To my annoyance, upon sitting down with my pint of Wainwright, I noticed there was sediment swirling in the glass. Having worked behind a bar before, I knew this wasn't acceptable and went back to the bar and asked for another, thinking it might've been a one off. My next pint was exactly the same. I apologised and said I couldn't drink it. To their credit they offered and pulled me a different ale on the third attempt which was fine. The problem I had was the general attitude of the barmaid when she was doing this, when a colleague came over to ask what the problem was, she shrugged and said 'sediment'; as if this was some alien concept and that I was just nitpicking. Having a bit of sediment in your pint is okay when you're near the end of a barrel for some, but having it swirling around on two occasions is completely unacceptable. I even explained that the barrel might've been disturbed but the barmaid just stared at me and looked clueless. It shouldn't be being served at all if there's sediment coming out and I doubt they did anything about it all day.In the end, I was so hacked off at the rudeness of the staff and their lack of knowledge with how ale should be served, that we didn't stay to eat and went elsewhere instead. The decor and ambience felt more like a cafe than a pub anyway and I was very happy to leave. A shame really that an easy food sale could've been made for them if their service wasn't so bad!

We decided to stay at the Travellers Rest for our weekend away as they were dog friendly and it was the perfect location for us. We had meals both nights, which were lovely..partically the Lamb Stew! We liked the pay before you eat policy as we were very tired from walking both evenings we could go back to our room as soon as we had finished rather than getting a waiter/waitress' attention for the bill. The problem for us was at night.. we understand that it is a pub but there seemed to be alot of youths that were drinking here, which resulted in us being awoken both nights by drunken arguments/fights outside our bedroom windows. This really upset our doggy who was barking the whole way through the shouting and after a long day walking was the last thing we wanted. Both mornings we had a cooked breakfast which was included in the room price. This was delicious and kept us going most of the day.We wouldn't return to The Travellers Rest due to room noise, but otherwise was ok.

We've driven past before and always wanted to come for a meal, the menu on the website looked great so we thought we would come to give it a try. We booked a table for 4 persons on Friday 5th December, only to find the place empty upon arrival. There were no other dining guests which was strange, so we put it down to the time of the year. We weren’t very impressed to overhear the bar area in the distance with loud dance music pumping through and over 20 youths shouting colourful language and getting drunk. The rest of our group decided to stay as we travelled 45 minutes from Sheffield to come for a meal in the countryside, and hoped the food would be better. The service was good and the meal was great, I really enjoyed my steak and ale pie. However, there was no apology for the loud noise and foul language, so it was uncomfortable to dine. The dining area was also cold, so coats were needed to stay on, the open fire we saw should have really been in use. It would have looked great especially in winter. It’s really unfortunate this lovely quaint pub/b&b has been overtaken by youths as their local haunt, it’s got so much potential for a great cooked pub grub being missed on. We won’t be coming back for now.
