People moan about the price of fish and chips but we fed 10 people for £50

Best F&C in Braintree always cooked fresh and plenty of it

Food is fine but an absolute shambles, I can’t give it more than 1 star. Was told there was no haddock only to watch multiple other people order haddock, then waited 40 minutes for cod and chips.

Portion sizes are OK. Chips are always very oily. Burgers neat and chicken are OK, but there is always something missing from the order. Eg. Mayo on burger instead of the ordered burger sauce. Onions added when I said I can't them. Curry sauce is missing from order. We have been back to see if the van food was a one-off, but nope, it's covered in oil. We don't use it anymore.

John's of braintree holds the claim braintrees best chippy honestly I agree the food is always spot on and service is good and prices are fair definitely not to be slept on

Foods ok but they do the smallest portions of chips I've ever seen ..

Without doubt this is now the best chippy in braintree I drive for about ten minutes past the one on my doorstep to go here. Its spotlessly clean, extremely friendly. Something I've never seen before is the fish is kept in a chiller cabinet in front of you when you walk in. This means not only will it be freshly cooked but you can choose it pre cooking.

Fish is great but chips are dreadful, I would suggest they had been pre cooked and sat in the warmer for ages because they are hard and dry,

My husband has been buying fish & chips from this establishment for years. I have noticed, possibly this last year, that the chips are hard and not very hot. I would venture to suggest that they are cooked earlier and then left in the warming area until customers arrive. This may not be the reason but I can't think that freshly cooked chips would be this way. On the plus side, the fish and batter is great.

When you order a large Haddock you don't expect half the side just batter on skin I get more in a medium

Had really high hopes for the new chipshop... but unfortunately it is just as bad as its prediceser Henleys.... ordered fish and chips, got them home to find out they couldn't be bothered to get rid of the chips they didn't sell at lunchtime.... so let's re fry them in the evening.... soggy, tasteless and like bullets.... fish was OK... not very impressed for a tenner.... Will not be revisiting

Were rather hesitant after hearing it called ‘the best chip shop in Braintree’ as that creates high expectations. However, upon trying the chips last week, we very much agree! These are the best chip shop chips we’ve found. We’ve not tried any other food from there as we’re vegan with strict allergies so only losing a star for lack of other choices for us. But will def be back for chips!

I don't live in Braintree.. my mum treated us to fish and chips from John's of Braintree.. both the chips and fish cooked to order, fish was thick and white, with crispy batter.. chips were perfect... hope mum treats us again from here.

I was the only customer in the shop when I visited, presumably because it was quite late. My order was freshly cooked & it was very nice indeed.

The food was really good,I think they could have added more salt 🧂 to the chips 🍟 but overall it was a good experience 👌

The Chipshop used to be Henleys but now has definitley established itself as Johns of Braintree. There were times standards were inconsistent. The chips are now always freshly cooked, soft and consistent like proper old school. We have cod that is always nicely battered and tasty. Staff are polite and friendly please keep up the good work. its ok but annoyed they do kebabs but hardly do them on most days if you can't do them even on a Saturday you should list them on your menu

Wow, havent been in a while but found great food at good prices, we placed a large order and the food was ready as promised, we dont live close but the food stayed hot, great customer service, these guys are great, many thanks we will be back.

Since this shop has changed to Johns they do things slightly differently they now double fry their chips, which makes them nice and crispy. The Kebab has also improved, meat tastes better and portion size is really good. I think some peoples reviews may be bias because previous owner was there some time and built up relationships. would defiantly recommend

Ordered cod and chips , found the batter very thin and not crispy and was wrapped in some paper that all the batter stuck to , very disappointed, will not be returning

Tried this place 3 times since new ownership and I've been disappointed all 3 times... Quality and quantity have gone down hill. It's a shame as it used to be excellent here. I will now be forced to drive and find a new chippy!

I felt a bit dissapointed with tonight's fish 'n' chips . I drove from Halstead to pick it up as Henley's has always been the best but.....The fish batter was doughy ,dense ,soggy and very oily .. it is normaly perfect.. really spiky and crispy and thick white cod... Not today ! Also the oil tasted like it needed changing .. The chips were dry and hard too ... On a Friday teatime ?? What has happened guys?

What has gone wrong at Henley's? It's changed its name to John's of Braintree but the quality and service has dropped off drastically. We've been using this chippy for 20 years and it's always been fantastic, great options and cooked quickly to order ... Even on a Friday evening. But tonight I waited 25 minutes for a kids fish and chips and a pie and chips. That's not fast food. They have changed head fryer and old quick system has gone. Chips are fried differently and tasted awful. The order was messed up and they offered a large fish as a goodwill gesture but that defeats the object of a kids fish and chips. Something's gone very wrong at what used to be Braintree's best chippy. Sadly, after all these years, I will be going elsewhere from now on.

Its a lovely clean chippy.The chips melt in ur mouth,and the batter on the saus was the best i had in this Town.Its not Greasy like others i,ve had.Staff are Friendly.They take pride in their jobs.well done Henleys.xxx

I'm Gluten free and witnessed them using the chip fryer's to cooked the battered iterms in. I had to cancel my chip order as this causes cross contamination. I can no longer use this chip shop as the chip we're the only thing that was gluten free!!!!

Went to get fish and chips. This was recommended by friends. Was not disappointed. Order is cooked to order and was very flavour sum. Fish had no bones and chips cooked just right. Will defo go there again.

Impressive portions of chips and you get a choice of the size of fish you want which is usually cooked while you wait. The fish was cooked beautifully and the other items were cooked to perfection (saveloys etc...). The batter was beautifully crispy, had to have pickled onion and bread and butter for a chip butty - mmmmmmmmmmm.......

Didn't have a good experience on this occasion. Staff rushed us through and weren't very polite and my battered sausages we cooked too much.

Fish is always cooked fresh from the chilled cabinet which is right in front of you as you walk through the door. Excellent batter on the fish and the chips are pretty good too. Never any complaints.

Went for a meal for my daughter she asked for large battered sausage small chips and curry sauce ... drove home not just around the corner to find small unbattered sausage small chips and curry sauce at the cost of £4.85 ... total joke won’t ever go again

Chicken was nasty, really nasty. Staff are polite but not very switched on and I've been in a few times just to be sure. Ordered a large battered sausage and small chips, got a small unbattered sausage large chips. When I mentioned this to the staff member they told me I hadn't ordered what I had but changed the order anyway without charge so pleased about that.

When in Braintree this is always a good shout. A comprehensive menu from a decent kebab to traditional fish and chips, I have had all above. Burgers are good too. Portions are good and all round good value for money. Always accurate and speedy service. Obviously a short wait time at peak prime times ie. Friday evening etc. Highly recommended and better than the rest in my opinion.

I've had a lot worse but I've also had better, chips were good but a little pale imo. The haddock was a little dry, maybe fish not fresh? Still good enough to eat the lot.

Always excellent fish chips. Scampi and salad is a personal favourite. And even better they are at the end of my road.
