An absolute gem. Every box ticked….beautiful peaceful location, amazing cakes and coffee, and really welcoming and efficient young staff who actually smiled when they served us 😉 A really nice touch was the couple of minutes the owner/manager spent chatting with us as we left…..as she also did with other customers. You definitely feel welcome. Even without the loyalty card she gave us we’d still keep coming back.

Lovely coffee and tea at this tearoom. Food came quickly and was also really nice. V.friendly staff who were the new owners from March this year. We came as a group of cyclists and they were most accommodating to sorting out the tables for us to all sit together outside. Forget all previous reviews as these are new owners who deserve to succeed at this venue. No we are not relatives of the owners as we come from West Yorkshire and were passing through on our ride. Will visit again when next in area.

We arrived by boat (three boats) coming on a tide from West Stockwith. It was just in time for lunch. We had delicious Lincolnshire sausage sandwiches. I could have devoured the cakes too as they looked delicious. Lovely friendly service too. It was lovely to find it a pleasant sunny day after so much rain and wind and the outside eating area is lovely and sheltered making it a little sun trap.

Went in at around lunchtime as feeling a little peckish. Had to ring the bell (stated "ring for a gossip") as no one was at the counter. The lady came in eating something with food still in her mouth whilst talking, abruptly asking if we'd used a door further down the tea room; after explaining we had she again abruptly told us how did we expect her to hear us unless we'd used the door opposite the counter. Nothing on any door stated this! Ignoring this we ordered. I asked if they sold sandwiches - what follow was the worst case of customer service I have ever incountered. If you're wondering, they DO NOT sell sandwiches. Again we tried to ignor this & continued to order. I spotted some sausage rolls on the counter & asked for one. I could not believe it when she asked had I preordered, not fully understanding what she meant I probed a little more, indeed she did mean had I phoned the day before to order in advance. We got tea & cake & sat down. Nothing wrong with either. This would be a lovely little spot to stop whilst out on a countryside drive if it were not for the horrid lady behind the counter. Needless to say, will not be revisiting; shame a really nice spot to relax a while.

I visited Torksey Lock primarily to take some photos, but fancied a cuppa whilst I was there. I had seen the terrible reviews about the tea room, but thought maybe they were just being a bit harsh. Turns out they were right. As soon as we stepped through the door, the woman behind the counter looked at us like we'd just walked into her own living room with p**p on our shoes. Despite this, we politely ordered a coffee and two teas and I asked if she had anything gluten free. She pointed to a plate of what looked like leftover cake crumbs and said unhelpfully "We only have this left." I declined and chose a packet of crisps instead. My Dad then went to pay and asked if she accepted cards. The woman then launched into a great long half angry speech saying "I don't take cards. The bank charges 40p per transaction. I've never taken cards in the 10 years I've been here and I never will." After paying, we went through to the seating area and about 5 mins later my Mum's phone rang. Almost immediately we heard stomping footsteps and the woman came bounding into the room and pointed to a sign on the door that said "Please refrain from using your mobile phone in the tearoom." My Dad looked at her with disdain and said "It says refrain, not don't" to which the woman replied snottily "It's for our other customers that's all." We didn't hang around long enough to do anything else to annoy her and left by the back entrance. The place is dreadful and the woman's attitude clearly stinks. The seating area feels like the woman's own house and you're not invited. It beggars belief why she runs a cafe if she hates her customers so much. The tea was also like dishwater and the cake looked like it had been out on the counter for 2 years. I won't be going back.

Having called for a drink on our way home, we were greated by the most unfriendly service we have ever had. When I asked for a menu I was told there wasn't one and the few shabby, broken bits of cake was all that what was available. We were told to order drinks first and not fancying any cake I had a packet of walkers crinkle crisps which were actually part of a multi pack. My partner had a piece of the best looking cake which was coffee and walnut and he ate only half. During this time we were rudely told to remove the dog from the doorway as customers didn't like it.... On returning the tray inside, he was rudely asked "What was the matter with the cake". I have never been served by someone with such a rude manner.

I really do wonder why some people go in to the customer service industry. We visited the tearooms on a beautiful summers day hoping to sit by the river and enjoy lunch. However we were greeted by shabby cafe staffed and a lady who seemed genuinely shocked that we asked if they served sandwiches. 'This is a tea room' she said, as if this somehow explained the lack of anything other than the cakes. I've visited a lot of excellent tea rooms in my time, and some bad ones. One unifying factor with all of these, and indeed all tearooms on the face of the planet, is that they serve things other than cake. All would have been forgiven if the lady in question had been pleasant or had the faintest clue how to work with customers, however she did not. Fortunately we were able to find a far nicer tea room on our way to Sherwood forest, but that is for another review.

Visited this lovely immaculate and charming café today with another 12 walkers. We stayed and enjoyed the atmosphere for just under an hour. The cakes where homemade and absolutely delicious, I enjoyed both the Orange/Chocolate and Carrot cake with the biggest pot of tea for two I've every had since my scouting days. My partner and I had about 7 best china cups of tea out of this pot, fantastic! and hence a most pleasant, restful and enjoyable experience. As for the Owner/Manager, she has character, charm and personality and having especially studied her attitude on this visit after reading the various criticisms on this site and personally from a recce visit two weeks previously I conclude that she has character, charm and personality and would be the ideal person to be come our PM and get the UK the best Brexit deal out of the EU. Had coffee and cake which we ate outside. The position of this establishment is pleasant overlooking the river but its situation is not maximised. The benches and tables (which according to the notice you "use at your own risk") are not well maintained and there are very naff artificial rose trees and, bizarrely, teapots stuck to the top of the wall. I looked through the window at the internal tea room and even though there were no customers inside some tables were covered with crumbs.

When we stopped off for tea and cake here we were stared at with profound suspicion by the proprietress and almost expected to be interrogated about whether we were 'local' or not, since she clearly has ideas about the kind of people she wants in her tea shop, and the kind she doesn't. I suspect the welcome kind live within a mile radius of the place, and are probably blood relatives.

Sadly we will never return to this cafe to receive rudeness and sarcasm just for asking about the food and drink that is on offer. It seems that unless you are a local or regular you will get spoken to in a manner that you have probably never experienced before from a person who is supposed to be running a business and serving food & drink to paying customers. There also seems to be a lack in hygiene skills as the cakes were touched with same hand that was handling dirty money/coins, no gloves or washing of hands. Visited here with my husband , looking forward to some hot coffee and cake after a walk on a cold afternoon . Sadly the reception inside this tea room was as cold as the weather outside . The cake cabinet was dirty and the cakes were half broken and looked liked they had been left out and exposed all day . The lady behind the counter was sarcastic and rude to my husband when he asked for a particular coffee, ridiculing him in front of other customers who we presumed were regulars . This lady then went on to be as rude to myself and ridicule me in a similar way . Unbelievably we think she may of been the owner ! Or certainly the manager , she seemed to hold herself in high regard with no customer service skills whatsoever like she could behave badly because of her position . She was very self assured and mocking . We were both made to feel foolish so took our drinks and sat as far away from this woman as we could . The tearoom itself was filled with the most bizarre eclectic items some of which looked like they had been sat there for years . ! The furniture was cheap plastic . The whole place needed a good clean . The coffee left a lot to be desired too , quite flavourless . All in all not a good experience . We will never return here and would not recommend it to anyone . Such a shame as the location is beautiful on the river bank .

You could make a sit-com about this cafe and the lead character would be the nasty woman who runs it. I have no idea why anyone would frequent this cafe if they have already made one visit but there did seem to be a couple of regulars that were in there and they were treated very differently to any new customers almost to the point of ignoring other folk. She is rude and even bordering on aggressive to her customers to the point I left without finishing my coffee or cake. I went a few miles up the road to Burton Waters Mariner where I sat outside a really nice Tea Room, was treated as a customer with politeness and courtesy with a great view and they provide hot sandwiches as you would imagine, whereas the cafe at Torksey Lock does not, and you get your head snapped off if you dare to ask for anything apart from a cake. My advice would be to save yourself the uncomfortable experience of visiting this establishment and head to Burton Waters and enjoy your coffee time.

On a cold windy day, after walking around the nearby waterways and river banks, a cup of tea was called for. On the outward journey I had seen the tea rooms, so I headed back there for a much needed cuppa. This place is unique. On the struts of the lock gates are a mixture of old tea pots and boots, either dredged out of the canal or left by passing barge dwellers as they enter and leave the lock. To match that, on the outer walls of the cafe are yet more pots, of all shapes and sizes, not fixed down, but just resting. The lady owner of the tea room, herself a lady of some considerable attractiveness and character, says that they are there for people to gaze at, or take or add to, whatever they will. Inside, the tea room, a long narrow series of rooms, with the first tables nearest the entrance reserved for the lady herself and her friends or staff, displays a range of cupboards and cabinets full of all manner of trinkets, souvenirs and tasteful bric a brac. Some of it seems to be there the permit some of the less-able members of the local community to sort through and occupy themselves, and the landlady seems to offer a place of welcome and rest for the older locals or those who might have some slight personal challenge. Given the lack of local support and local amenities, she allows her tea rooms to be used, free of charge for meetings and exchange. The cakes are all made by her and are just delicious. The walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of art work, some of which carry their own bemusing tale. But you will have to visit and chat to her to find out more.Such a delightful place and excellent cake as well.

Making a return trip to the tearooms with my wife. I remembered the fruit and nut slice and had it again . Fabulous taste. Stokes cappacino also great. The lady serving remembered us from our last visit. Quite a feat in a busy tearoom. Part of the reason for this review is to offer what may be an alternative to the unkind comments I have just read. It is situated in a lovely spot. Yes the food and drink are great. NO the proprietress is not overbearing is not rude. I think she may be out of step with the present world of political correctness and general dumbed down feelings. Great. This is a location I will come back to again because it reminds me of Old England when you could speak your mind and have fellow travellers agree with you. Where service was great if you deserved it. I have no problem with the hostess speaking her mind and not putting up with rude customers. I once ran a small hotel myself before retiring. I loved the job if only it wasn't for the guests. Give her a break. Sit down and smell the coffee.

As a regular customer at the Tea Rooms, I find the coffee and cake here to be the best around.the cakes are all home-made and delicious - to the point where I have to restrict my visits in the interest of my waistline! They are irresistible to me.If I am out and about in town I always choose Costa for my pit stops but the coffee there is not a patch on Stokes from the tearooms. Finally, a visit to the Tea Rooms will not hurt your wallet. It is exceptionally good value for money.

I have recently had my 3rd visit to this wonderful place-wonderful been the location, that is it.Like others have said,on previous visits I thought she may be having a trying day(I have my own business,it does happen!)but I think she is just the rudest woman I have ever met in business & the last-& final time took the biscuit!!There are no menus on the table,I went inside & asked for one-if looks could kill,Id be dead in 0.3 seconds!! Glaring at me with such hate in her eyes, she rudely said there were no menus, they only served cake. I said said I could've sworn Id had a sandwich before but I must be wrong,to which she just replied,"NO,NO SANDWICHES,JUST CAKE!!!" Ok... It was just after lunch so didn't really fancy anything sweet.Went outside to my mum to see what she though,if noticed scones so thought we'd have one of those with a pot of tea. Went back in to order, there was no one there. I then noticed a cake which looked rather nice so went back outside to my mum to see if we should get that instead.I went back in & could hear the lady very rudely talking about me to another lady, she obviously had no idea I was stood there so her face was a picture when she walked back in!! I was livid!! I smiled at her & said,"Talking about me was you?" To which she stuttered some rubbish under her breath about how she saw me in the camera but when she came out Id gone. I told her why & that we were deciding what to have to eat but we wouldn't bother & just have tea. There was a bowl of sugar on the counter,I asked if I needed to use this for the tea as there were no sugar bowls on the tables outside,I was pretty much screamed at,saying there were sugar bowls on the tables inside. By this point I was seething!!! Whether you're having a bad day or not,you just cannot be rude to customers!!We finished our tea & sat by the camel. I needed to use the loo & didn't dare ask for the key?! But needs must. She handed me the key without saying I word. I took the key back & she had the cheek to say,"You'll get used to us the more you come". Get used to what?! Been spoken to rudely & been spoken about?! I can honestly say I will NEVER EVER return to that place as the woman is vile,Id rather throw my money in the canal than put it in her pockets!!! A real shame.

Happened across this tea room today with some boating chums, called in asked for a take out coffee, to be greeted with "no, most people sit outside" so I took a can of coke from the fridge and spent a while being entertained by the bug display that was taking place aloft the Zan special cake, needless to say I lost my appetite and meandered back to the boat to enjoy my coke. Unless watching bug displays is your thing, I would steer clear.

Having read so many reviews saying how rude the proprietor is I wanted to visit to experience it for myself and will admit I was primed to try pressing her buttons but you know...she really is not that bad! Ok, maybe she has a manner that comes across as being a bit abrupt but are any of us perfect? The choice of cakes is extensive and both cake and sausage rolls are really gorgeous. My coffee was especially good too and the price is fantastic. The place is spotlessly clean, light, bright and in a great location so really...what is it people are complaining about? So you don't get a smile when you want one? Try giving out smiles and you will get them back. Try remembering your please and thank you's even if you don't feel they are deserved. Perhaps the customer before you tried pressing her buttons and she still has gritted teeth. Unless of course you are perfect! We will certainly be back

Called in for a lovely coffee and a slice of cake, the drinks and assorted cakes are to die for, but unfortunately don't be expecting a welcoming smile, the proprietor is very blunt to the point of being rude, it's a shame really because it's a lovely tearoom in a lovely setting. My advise is change your attitude before it's too late.

We are a family and own a boat so we sailed up to Torksey as it was a lovely sunny day.We have visited the tea rooms before for coffee and cake. The lady serving is one of the rudest people I have met and has no customer service skills what so ever. We asked for a Diet Coke and was told what ever is left in the fridge. Owning a tea room you should check what stock you have left for your customers.I also asked for a latte but with skinny milk (red top) and the lady said red milk I've never seen red milk making me look like a fool when other customers were waiting behind in the queue.I can honestly say I will never step foot in the tea rooms again. Such a rude and abrupt woman.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the majority of comments on here, nice place, shame about the service. My friend and I had been for a walk and decided to call in for a drink as we had not visited before. It was a miserable day and we were probably the only 2 customers that day but we didn't exactly get a warm welcome; it almost seemed as though we were an inconvenience and interrupting the 2 ladies conversation. We were looking at the cakes, which incidentally looked very nice and were asked to order drinks first. There are no menus to look at to decide what you would like and couldn't understand the rush as there wasn't exactly a queue. The tea room is nice and could be a gold mine if they actually acted as though they wanted customers. Don't think we'll be rushing back.

Felt had to write a review again having read some of the reviews. I visit the team rooms on a regular basis, often with my daughters and a warm welcome is always received from Zan as soon as you walk through the door. We love the delicious home made cakes and sausage rolls, and tea/coffee served in quirky mix and match tea pots and cups. Really low price for a good slice of cake!! Great banter and chat, always enjoy the visit.

The proprietor does not seem to have any communication skills The floor was covered in crumbs. On entering she was so rude I wanted to walk out. She handled my scone with the same hand she then handled money. Hygiene guidance rules? No alternative to butter. When I asked for an alternative she looked at me as if I had asked for the moon! We were on our own in the tea room, she came in, swept the crumbs off the table next to us and did not even speak. I truly got the impression that she is just not interested Boy, we were glad to leave. PS My scone had a grand total of three sultanas in it!

I think some reviewers must lack sense of humour! We visited for the first time today and found the owner to be interesting, welcoming and very funny, we had a lovely time along with a gorgeous cup of coffee and a proper pot of tea served in a really quaint teapot! The cakes are all made by the owner and all look superb. I can only think that because Zan is a lady with a big personality that some people may misinterpret her humour, we loved it and will be returning when next in the area. The sausage rolls are a must!

We have been going to Torksey Tea Rooms for about 5 or 6 years and visit at least once a month. This is the first time that I have looked at the reviews on TA and I am appalled by some of the negative comments, in fact I thought that there must be another Torksey Tea Rooms somewhere !!! Some of the bad comments are laughable - "only does cakes and cold sausage rolls" - it is a TEA ROOM, the clue is in the name !! And as for swearing, we have NEVER heard any foul language, if there was we wouldn't take the grandkids there. The cakes are all home-made and delicious, and very reasonably priced, as are the drinks. There is a very good atmosphere when we visit, and always have a laugh and banter with Zan.There are wonderful walks along the canal path next to the Tea Rooms with fresh water (supplied by Zan) always available. The Tea Rooms are very popular indeed, especially in the good weather, so that many people can't all be wrong, can they ?The Rooms are always extremely clean and tidy, and the 'book exchange' is very popular with the visitors.

Out house-hunting, we wanted a light lunch and chanced on the tea room. The lady must have Basil Fawlty as her inspiration and was astonished to be asked for a sandwich! We thought she must be having a bad day but it turns out when we had a second viewing of a house she was having another one. She was even ruder than the first time but it did become very amusing. Apparently she only does cakes and cold sausage rolls - and they were gone by lunchtime. The tea and coffee were actually good. I think she misheard - she thinks she's in the hostility industry.

Delightful tea rooms in a pleasant location. Polite, prompt and efficient service accomodating my every request. Myself and Mum thoroughly enjoyed the delicious, hot latte coffee and tasty toasted tea cakes with a generous amount of butter. We were certainly impressed with the bill of £5.60, it is extremely good value for the money. An interesting visit too as we browsed through a good selection of books for sales, as well as admiring hand crafted jewellery, art work and much more. We had a lovely scenic view of swans on the canal. Look forward to calling in again and tasting some of remarkable selection of home made cakes that are on offer.

We've been twice now and both time the owner was rude. This time she managed to be unpleasant to three members of my family in one hit. Although there are only a handful of reviews on here a lot of them have been endorsed. This lady is upsetting people deliberately and should be ashamed of herself. It's no way to run a business. She obviously gets a kick from it. How sad.

Well all I can say is appalling. The owner was very unwelcoming. And then proceeded to swear several times. Then her "upset lady friend" continued to swear several times. So much so myself and my husband left without finishing our tea. She doesn't deserve to have a business at all.

I visited the tea room last month and the lady was extremely rude and arrogant. Everything was an effort for her. My parents were visiting Lincoln and I decided to take them for a drive and refreshments at the tea room (giving the proprietor the benifit of the doubt, incase she was having a bad day the last time it visited). She was again rude and very unfriendly. I'm surprised anyone goes back there. I will never go back there again because of her attitude. If she doesn't like what she does then sell the place. Horrible woman!

I am shocked by some of the reviews about Torksey Tea Rooms. We first went following a recommendation from a friend. We were warmly greeted by Zan and she made us feel very welcome. All her cakes are made from quality ingredients to great, old fashioned recipes. They are, without doubt, the best cakes we have ever eaten. Zan is bubbly and chatty and we always have a laugh with her. We often go now and shall continue to do so. It is a lovely place to sit outside on a sunny day and is always nice and warm inside on colder days. We highly recommend it to anyone.

Tasty pizza from Dough Loco at the pub recently. Staff were friendly and helpful. On a minor note, the Bar could do with a little modernising and some of the overhead lighting is bright/harsh. But defo returning.
