Really enjoy the fish and chips from top table and very well and fairly priced - no complaints! certainly worth a visit some time.

Fish batter undercooked, chips were average at best. Wouldn't go back.

Like a lot of restaurants in the area, it quite hit and miss. Sometimes the fish is cooked perfectly but sometimes its a tad overcooked, but I'm possibly biased by the quality of pubs. But you would think a fish and chip shop would have perfected their craft, hense the name. The chips are the main problem for me, on the odd occasion there are a good proportion of proper chips, but the last time I went, it was half a bag of crispy bits. I know some people like them, but if I really wanted that many I'd buy a bag of Walkers for less money. I'm happy paying a bit more for some proper chips.

Faced with urgent need to feed six one evening, went down our usual fish and chips shop (Top Table) and ordered fish and chips for six. Because of the numbers it was probably cooked there and then. The result was the best fish and chips I have EVER had!!

Best takeaway in Reading by far. My family have been going here for 20+ years and they've never disappointed. 10/10.

Best chicken in East Reading by far. Also do some amazing fish and chips. The owner is super sweet and he always has a smile for you. Perfect location, ample parking out the front. Have been coming here since I was a teenager and they're still going strong 😊

Good value at £9.10 for small cod, chips and mushy peas which were generous portion sizes. The fish is cooked freshly to order and has a nice crunchy batter and perfectly cooked white fish inside. The chips from here are absolutely fantastic - cooked to perfection with a nice golden brown colour, crispy on the outside and soft potato inside. Whatever their cooking process is, double frying, and choice of potato they have it just right and consistently so. I can only assume that the people giving bad reviews are those who like their chips to be the soggy wet undercooked mess all stuck together and stuck to the paper that some other places seem to think it’s acceptable to serve - ignore them, this is fish and chips at its very best!

Visited this place on many occasions and been happy with the food and service every time

For me, Martin and his team sell the best fish and chips in Reading. Have I been to all the fish places in Reading? No, no I haven't. But of the ones I have been to and other places across the country, I think top table lives up to its name. Always friendly and reasonably priced. Only drawback is that they only take cash.

Used be be a favorite a few years ago but the quality of food has dropped massively. Now go elsewhere. Also disappointed that they use palm oil to cook with. My advice would be try some others in the area

Use to love this place, not anymore. The chips were amazing but now they're awful. Have gone back a few more times incase they just had a few bad days, but no each order has been horrible. Such a shame.

Right, I love their burgers. Those chicken burgers are incredible. However their chips taste and look like you’ve microwaved them from the night before. Rancid. I imagine they cook them the day before in batches and reheat them. They’re even look like they’ve been recooked. Every time I’ve been there for the past 10 years it’s the same nasty chips but I only go back for those tasty burgers

Brought burger and chips today and saveloy and chips today and the chips are rock hard and the mrs said her saveloy tasted horrible! Will never be buying from here again!

Had to throw away my food. I'm vegetarian and orded chips, curry sauce and the pancake roll - i asked what was in the pancake roll and was told vegetables. Food was fine until I came across a a miscellaneous piece of something, after close inspection is was clear it was some kinda meat/chicken. I then found meat in the curry sauce too, so then had to throw it all away. Not happy at all. It should be clear what is vegetarian and what is not. Waste of money.

Amazing fish and chips. The only thing is if you do not eat that many chips then I would get the chips separate and not many portions too. The mushy peas are perfect. I just struggled eating that many chips because they are very generous with their portion sizes .

Love this place, been going here for about 15 years. I asked Martin recently why he doesn't do deep fried Mars bars, he said it would ruin the oil, a lot of thought is put into this food! Chips are incredible, well priced. Friendly staff, always up for a chat.

Used to go here as food was good .Then saw staff frying meat products in same oil as non meat.Also using same tongs for fish and chicken ,sausages. When asked why received a shrug of the shoulders. Rude owner who just wants your money.Food is acceptable but overrated.

It's takeaway food at its best. Reasonably priced.Always piping hot and generous portions. The staff are friendly. It's better to go earlier or you may not get the freshest food. They enforce social distancing.

First "fish & chip" shop I've been too in reading and have to say it was good authentic experience was very happy until it came to asking for sauce on my chips to which the man replied "we don't do sauce it's too messy" later I came to know they do however charge extra for it. Cheeky I think otherwise it would have been 5 starts the chips and fish where very very oily also and not well drained at all.

I have been going there all my life and decided to look up what the review on Trip Advisor would be and am shocked that it has only 3.5 stars. I do agree that the service could be better but for alot of the people working there, English is not their first language and they try their best. This is a chippie not a sit-down restaurant so don't expect the service to be as nice as it is at Cote, but the chips are amazing! At the moment it is cash only and they are social distancing very well.

What a perfect dinner. Fish , chips and mushy peas. I loved every mouthful. It was amazing. It is a must especially with a lot of people still in lockdown.

We were driving through the local area and noticed that this chip shop was open. We had sausage and chips. Cash only at the moment but good health and safety - big plastic screen up. Chips were well done and crispy (just the way I like them!). We will be back!

Nothing top about top table! DRY. DRY. DRY! Chips must of been cooked before lockdown and re fried. My wife had fried chicken rib cage with very little DRY meat. Awful place AVOID! RANK!!

It saddens me slightly when I have to give less than 4/5 stars for a review but this was just so disappointing. a large order containing chips, chicken, scampi, and fish cakes; most of it was unsatisfactory. The chips were strangely coloured, like the oil was old. The fish cakes were cheap and really not very appealing (I fully acknowledge they're fish cakes and hence not a la carte!). Scampi was overdone and the misses didn't even get past the first bite as presumably the same aged oil had imparted an odd taste onto it. As others have said, they also only accept cash which in the year 2020 is just annoying. Would not go back I'm afraid.

We have only been once, but others have recommended this place. My wife and I ordered Cod and chips. The portions were generous, however the fish was over cooked in parts and the chips were overly greasy. There was a queue and it was a very hot day. So it was possible that the deep fat fryer was not at the right temperature, hence fatty chips. The fish was not uniform in shape and the thinner parts were over cooked. I have regularly passed this chippy and have heard good things. Shame that it did not live up to expectations.

Very disappointing take away. The fish does not taste of anything and too much batter, the actual fish fillet is very small. Chips are oily, dry and hard. Definitely will not be going back until the reviews improved.

Saw a few negative reviews here whereas their rating in google is 4.1. This is very odd because my experience was a positive one.Place was busy and had to wait which is actually good. Means your food had not been kept warm and drying out. Both the Fish and the chips were done right. Only speckles of oil on the wrapping indicating a good chef. Fish was slightly small for a 'large' but forgivable. Chips was one of the best I've had for a while. Not greasy and cut from fresh potato. Very good quality chips. 2 large cod and 1 (must say very large for a small portion) chips less than £12 represent decent value.

Visit this at your peril! Standard of fish & chips wouldn't be fed to a dog. Visited at 18.30 on a Saturday night Fish dried up (probably cooked friday night & warmed up) Chips hard brown & dried up. This business is fleecing people!!! Disgusting

Si me apetece Fish and chips, este es el "platillo" al que vengo, ¡pero nunca más!Cuando llegué a casa, lo vi con sospecha, las papas fritas parecían demasiado cocidas y arrugadas, la masa de pescado oscura, quizás también demasiado cocida.No me desanimé, ya que esto suele ser un excelente chippy, tienen su reputación en la que pensar.Este fue el peor pescado y papas fritas que he tenido la mala suerte de probar, seco y sin sabor, incluso los gatos levantaron sus narices hacia el pescado que sacé de la masa.Compré esto hoy, alrededor de las 6 pm, nunca se me ocurrió que obtendría las sobras secas de la hora del almuerzo, lo que seguramente fue. Espero que otros chippies hagan lo mismo, pero vende a tus clientes este tipo de basura y encontrarás que los pierdes.

The staff are friendly and the food is good however I got a bit of gut ache after eating fish and chips there one time and the batter on the fish gets a little sickly towards the end but that maybe just me as I don't eat a lot of greasy/battered things often.

No he usado Top Table por mucho tiempo ya que ha sido muy decepcionante en el pasado, sin embargo, decidimos intentarlo de nuevo esta noche. Ambos teníamos un bacalao grande y chips pequeños. El pescado dentro de la masa en ambos trozos de pescado estaba tan seco que no era comestible y las papas eran pequeñas y crujientes. No es un chip de tamaño completo en el sitio. Ambas comidas fueron en la papelera.

Love the fish and chips here although my parents also love the chicken. Best value for money in reading, I share one large portion. We've been coming here for years and haven't witnessed the hygiene issues mentioned in other reviews. Take cash although you can now use the co-op cash machine next door. You can also drive as there's a small parking area in front. Call ahead during peak times. They work odd hours so check they're open before you go.

My family and I were really looking forward to some nice fish and chips which we don't usually have. The fish was absolutely vile, bones everywhere and it was hard and chewy. In the end we binned it. Disgusting! Never again!

My wife likes these chips the most. So do the local Scouts, who voted Top Table chips best in the district! Friendly service. Cash only, but the Co-op next door is happy to give small amounts of cashback.

Estábamos realmente de humor para fish & chips como un regalo después de un largo día. Lamentablemente todo fue en el contenedor. Llegamos a casa y descubrimos que las papas fritas estaban demasiado cocinadas, de color oscuro y rancias. El pescado parecía viejo sin sabor y había demasiado batido en la salchicha que también parecía muy viejo y rancio también. Recordé que este lugar solía ser bueno una vez. Tal vez estaban teniendo una noche fuera? Nos vendieron comida vieja esta noche y fue una pérdida total de dinero. ¡Han estado allí durante años, así que estoy seguro de que deben estar haciendo algo bien! Espero que lean esto y lo arreglen. Tenga en cuenta y no venda comida vieja y obsoleta a las personas, ya que no es justa.

Top Table has been providing good quality and big portions with some of the same staff my whole life

Well I have being going here for about the last 12 years it was all good until the past year or so the owner likes to alter your order for you and says it's a better deal. But when you get home to have your food you not don't have enough chips because he altered your order for you. And then on the 19th July we went to top table to order 4 piece chicken and chips that was all good until another customer came and ordered after me chicken and chips but there was not enough chicken so he decided to take a piece of chicken from me so he would have enough for the person who ordered after me. I was there first so I have got the chicken. I tried to say no but it went on deaf ears. It will be a while before I go back if this is how he treats a 12 year loyal customer.

Just had to throw the lot tasted very bad I think the oil is old although they say they change everyday! Fish so dry no flavour at all well overcooked very very disappointed and not cheap. Certainly will not be returning after mentioning to the people not even an apology very bad customer service. By the way this is honestly the first time I have ever felt strongly enough to complain.

Tenemos nuestro pescado y patatas fritas sólo desde aquí ahora; hemos probado algunos otros lugares, pero mi hija le gusta el pescado desde aquí. La pequeña cod es más que suficiente para mi hija de 10 años mientras que tendré un pez grande o una tarta; generalmente nos dan un pequeños fragmentos, así como la porción es bastante grande y suficiente para nosotros.
