We decided to have dinner in this pub, passing by by chance, attracted by the traditional appearance of the place. There is plenty of seating inside but as it is high season it was all busy so we sat at the bar counter. We both ate the traditional steak pie, the serving was good but the side dishes were a little poor.

Good experience at Tolbooth Tavern. It was one of those places I definitely wanted to try, I've heard a lot about it and I think it's a pretty historic tavern in Edinburgh. It is located on a fairly main street that flows onto Royal Mile. What can I say? I booked online from the site, it's easy to book, I advise you to book if you don't want to risk not finding a place. The place inside is nice, a very traditional pub furnished in an "antique" style. Very fast and attentive service, the dishes were very good, but they did not exceed my expectations, the meat of my sandwich was really overcooked, good overall but honestly a little disappointed. I expected to be surprised and to confirm what people say about this place. At the end of the Classic Burger I was still hungry, so I had a dessert, typical Scottish, with ice cream and a kind of caramel cake, good but very sweet, it wasn't easy to eat it all. I don't know, great place but average. Would I go back? I think I would try something else honestly.

We found this meal, very disappointing, especially seeing the cost. The smoked salmon was rather tasteless as was the fish in the fish and chips. We’ve had better at red lobster. Mushroom on toast was satisfactory. The haggis may or may not have had a whiskey sauce. There was a tartar sauce. Didn’t taste any different than any other tartar sauce we’ve had. The Scottish oatcakes were rather dry and tasteless, that may be the way they always are as we have no reference. The dessert was huge. It says raspberries on the menu. There was one raspberry and a little bit of raspberry sauce. The whip cream was overwhelming. We had a much better version of that dish today. We would have enjoyed better a smaller serving with better quality.

The venue was cosy, the beer was good and the service was okay. But the food could have had much more to offer. I think the place is clearly overhyped. I had the Steak pie and it was good anyway... after I put a lot of salt on afterwards. But it is rarely completely good to salt such dishes afterwards. My partner took the Sirloin Steak and was asked how he wanted it cooked. He then answered "medium", but the piece he got was definitely not medium, but more well done. The meat was also beaten up and that's not how you should treat such meat. So what he got was a dry little piece of meat and a small pile of fries.

The best fish & chips I ate on my trip. A crunchy batter and everything delicious. One of our guides recommended a drink called Teddy (or something like that), and we ordered it after dinner. It was like a hot infusion, with whiskey and lemon. The guys who served us were really friendly, even making jokes when they saw that we were Spanish. The charming place, the pub you expect to find typical Scottish. It said that sometimes there was live music, we weren't that lucky, but there was music through speakers which made for a very Scottish and cozy atmosphere. We loved it.

Good spot for drinks and food. Seems to need reservations for tables. Bartenders and servers were very nice. We had the mackerel pate which was very good. Came with oat crackers that paired nicely. The haggis stack was delicious. The orange on the haggis is squash I think. The whisky sauce is nice with it. I tried the meat pie which was a first. It’s like stewed meat with a puff pastry. The pastry was ok. But tasted good in the meet au jus. She had the mushroom on bloomers which is toast. That was good as well.

This place was across the street from where we stayed for 3 night and we were pretty excited about it as it looks really cool. We ate here before we checked in waiting for our place and the food was average but the bar was really cool. We where hoping this would be our local "watering hole" for my wife and two boys (22yo and 19yo) over the next couple of days, but it wasn't. The bartenders were nice but certainly not going out of there way on the service aspect and were more concerned about closing down at 11 pm every night. Was kind of a swing and a miss for potentially a great spot. That being said, this place fell short of the potential we were hoping for.

Visited for the first time with a group of local hospitality managers, the venue was lovely. The staff were weirdly rude and almost confrontational. We were advised upon ordering drinks that the venue closed in 30 minutes and said no problem we were just after 1 drink. 4 minutes after ordering our drinks, the music was then turned off and lights were turned up to full. The bar staff then started putting the chairs on every table more than 20 minutes prior to closing and even asked people to move and reached over a table full of people to turn off a lamp so they could close. We all weren't sure if any management was in place but all found it extremely rude and found the staff hostile and would suggest changing the opening times or closing process as it is not normal to make 5 tables feel unwelcome enough to finish their drinks so quickly and leave with that sort of attitude from staff. Disappointing as the venue itself is lovely.
