Delicious food, good portion sizes, friendly staff and quick service!

We recently returned to this wonderful Japanese restaurant in Birmingham after a long absence, and it was like coming home. The moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm smile by the owner/manager, who not only took our order but also remembered my milk allergy from previous visits. This level of personal care and attention to detail is truly impressive. The service was impeccable, and the food was nothing short of spectacular. Each dish was crafted with precision and presented beautifully. The flavors were rich and authentic, showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination in Birmingham.

First time eating here, after some shopping in Birmingham! Absolutely beautiful restaurant with friendly staff. Super quick service given it was a busy Saturday. The tonkotsu ramen was to die for alongside the chicken gyoza. My Mom had the chicken katsu, which was also amazing! The best I've ever had actually. Would definitely recommend and would return again!

I ate here twice over a long weekend and wish there was somewhere like this where I live. Food was excellent (sushi one visit and the beef bento another), service was efficient and friendly. If I return to Burmingham I will definitely eat here again.

this is probably our 3rd time going and we were blown away once again. we had a table booked for 4:30 for valentines day, we got there slightly early but were seated right away. they gave us a good amount of time to pick our food and drinks. they took our orders, and starting bringing out the food not even 15mins after! the food was incredible as always, and the blue lagoon was delicious. they played beautiful music, and even played happy birthday for the table next to us. overall an amazing experience and we will definitely be going again.

One of my most favourable food places in the UK & definitely the most favourable sushi place in the world for me. It’s just THAT good! I don’t live in Birmingham but sometimes I go especially:) lovely food, lovely service, suitable for anyone who is not a sushi fan but loves seafood alright.

Waited at the door when two staff came by and ignored us. The female staff with glasses came by, took menus behind us and attended to 2 different groups of customers while not having any eye contact nor verbal communication with us. We didn’t know if we would be attended to or how long we would have to wait. In comparison, she would greet customers outside the restaurant with smiles and politeness. This sparks rage within me knowing she intentionally ignored us and had a straight face when we were led to our table. Another waitress was a lot better, at least I feel like I’m treated like a customer. It took 34 minutes after the first dish arriving for our 2 mains to come. Not a huge problem but would be merrier if it’s served earlier. Only one person can walk through the tables so it’s rather packed. Feels a bit crowded to enjoy the meal. All in all, food is alright but the female server would be the main reason I’m not returning. Very disappointed as this restaurant was recommended by our friends. Worst experience dining out I’ve had in Birmingham as we felt discriminated and the server was racist

Really good sushi and takoyaki. We came here on a rainy day for late lunch and to escape the rain while exploring Birmingham. The menu was really good and everything we order tasted delicious. I would definitely come here again should I come back to Birmingham again.

Absolutely love this fabulous restaurant with a vibrant and colourful interior, a calming ambience with pleasant people service.. the food was very yumm, priced reasonably. We were 10 of us who went in with an advanced booking. I was contacted promptly by Christie who confirmed the numbers. She was kind and helpful with the reservation. Overall very happy with the service.

My favourite restaurant. All that you order is going to be delicious. The atmosphere is great, and attention is always good. It is a good idea to book in advance for more than 2 people, but it is super easy.

Great ramen and katsu chicken in a cute atmosphere. Felt the Tonkotsu ramen lacked in depth a little and had slightly too much fish sauce but the meat was really good. The staff were very friendly and respectful. DOV: 14/01/2025

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Birmingham without a doubt! We ordered a number of items including tempura platter, cha siu ramen, tempura udon, unagi don, takoyaki, London Tower Bridge maki and Osaka aburi salmon maki. The tempura platter is highly recommended as they came in hot and crispy with light batter. The platter included shrimps, lotus root, asparagus, pumpkin and shiitake mushrooms. It was very authentic and very close to what you’d have in Japan. They have a wide selection of specialty rolls and also good selection of Japanese whisky. The ramen broth was rich with noodles cooked to Al dente and again, authentic is the word for it. Takoyaki was similar to what you’d find in Japan, soft outside with lots of fillings inside, what’s different was the dressing on it. The unagi was just a wee but under seasoned as the fishy taste remained, but otherwise the unagi sauce was still both sweet and savoury. The ingredients in the maki we ordered were well complimented with the sauce and dressings used. I would highly recommend this restaurant to Japanese food lovers! It is good for any kind of occasions. This place is also very popular so remember to book your table before visiting!

The sushi was excellent. The wagyu fried rice was a bit of a let down as it lacked flavour. The bento box was good. The starter platter was really nice to share between 2.

Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in town. Everything we tried was amazing!! We wanted to order the whole menu. Hamachi-Yellowtail shasimi (to die for).. Wagyu nigiri..Spider Maki and Tonkochu ramen was my favorite!! The staff is very friendly and kind and the atmosphere is great!! We are going back to try the rest on the menu soon!! Excepting the price is quite high for the taste of the food , the ramen is not authentic one , soup and the texture of the ramen is not Oky for a Japan ramen. I don’t know why got such high score at google.

If you want authentic Japanese Food then this is the place for you. The atmosphere is chilled and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend the Donburi Waygu Beef with the Egg. The Chefs Japanese Sausage is a real treat :-E

We had the most wonderful experience at Tokyo izakaya. We have never visited before but booked a table as it gets booked up really fast. I can’t stress enough how welcoming and lovely the entire team were. Our waiters were so attentive and the whole dining experience was incredibly relaxed yet professional and prompt and everything else you could want. The setting is beautiful and you can watch the team making the sushi which was really interesting and you could see the freshness and quality of the ingredients used. The food was outstanding, wonderfully presented and literally the best sushi and side dishes we have ever tasted. Overall this restaurant was amazing you can feel the amazing Japanese hospitality and the food was on point.

The food and atmosphere were good. What marred my visit was seeing a 10% service charge on the bill that wasn't advertised anywhere beforehand. I'm just so tired of this behaviour. I'm tired of restaurants using service charges and deceit to inflate their prices. If you can't be honest about the cost of goods and services with your customers, you don't deserve to be in business.

We recently visited Tokyo Izakaya for a birthday celebration, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. We were a large group, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. From the moment we walked in, the attention to detail was amazing, and the entire team was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The food was another highlight. Every dish was packed with flavor and beautifully prepared. Whether you're looking for a special occasion spot or simply want to enjoy delicious Japanese food, Tokyo Izakaya is a place I’d highly recommend.

I’m so sorry but the ramen is below average, especially for that price. I have this tradition of having ramen in every city I go to and choosing the highest rated ones. This is the first time I was deeply disappointed by the quality and the portion despite this being one of the most expensive ramens I’ve had. Very bland base, not enough noodles, toppings could be richer. I am not a big eater at all but I felt the need to have a bite again 30 mins after finishing my meal at your place.

The food in this place is just incredibly perfect, I couldn’t change anything on the menu, if you’re after sushi then head this way!!! Amazing place to eat ❤️ Food tastes amazing, service is friendly, atmosphere is great and well decorated Had first date here with my bf and have been coming here for over a year on dates still and can vouch that the food and service has always been great. The seating upstairs is a lot better so book in advanced to get a seat but they also do walk ins for downstairs seating which is also good. Really a big fan of their tonkatsu ramen it’s the best I’ve had in UK so far. The bento 🍱 are really good value for money as well 😊 my bf said the eel in the Unagi Don is really good and seasoned well. I’ve recently tried their Ebi tempura and it’s presented and cooked as I expect with the sauce on the side. Thank you for the amazing dining experience !

I have had sushi all over the UK and globally- I keep coming back to Tokyo Izayaka because it is so good! My partner also agrees. The sushi always tastes authentic and fresh. The hot food is also great. The staff are kind, friendly and attentive. The decor is beautiful. A great little gem for sushi in the Birmingham area.

Found this wonderful restaurant by accident and so happy we did. The service and staff were so friendly and welcoming. Had a choice of unusual cocktails. There were lots of choices on the menu. The food was extremely fresh and delicious. Will be going back again when I next visit Birmingham.

I had a wonderful dining experience at this Japanese restaurant. The sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful, with the perfect balance of ingredients and sauces. The grilled dish was beautifully presented and packed with savory flavors, topped with a delightful crunch.

Having lived in Japan in place called Shibuya outside Tokyo there were a few meals I'd not had since. To my delight they were on the menu and very authentic. Great little place, that I've walked past many times and only visited last night for the first time. Sorry it took so long.

Went twice in one day as it was so gorgeous. The food was amazing quality and came out quick enough. The servers were all super friendly and more than accommodating for me. Unfortunately got no photos this time but I will be going back for the remainder of my stay. Would highly recommend to anyone who loves Japanese cuisine.

Expensive for what it is. If you have had good sushi then this is average to good compared to london. I’m convinced that people in Birmingham have yet to eat good sushi based on reviews in general. Sushi party comes in a boat. Makes eating it hard. Food stuck to wood on boat. Leaves me wondering how they wash that thing. Didn’t leave the soy bottle. Nobody come refill the soy. Had to chase down staff to get anything. Not once did anyone come ask if we wanted more drinks or refill our water. The beef was £16.80 and there was barely any meat. Wasn’t really cooked as asked either. Left the restaurant still hungry even after a £70 bill. The worst bit is that they add a service charge without asking or permission even when there wasn’t any service at all. Won’t be going back. This isn’t a 5 star experience in any sense. Anyone who rates this place 5 stars you need to question their life experiences. Very disappointed.

The beef was okay, just a bit a dry - in need of some kind of sauce. The ramen was basic. Service was extremely slow.

This is a little gem hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Birmingham. Sushi was super tasty, so was the ramen, katsu curry, and sushi set. Need more broth in the udon though. The decor is fun and vibrant and the service was good. You can use card but pay by cash is cheaper, an increasingly practice in restaurants now. Eaten here several times now but I'm not a fan of adding 10% onto bill without informing you first. This can be over £10. Its also more expensive than most Japanese restaurants I have been to. 4.5 stars.

Miso Aubergine was fantastic. Service was good. Ramen was very disappointing. Left half of the food. Even complained, yet was charged full amount. Would not return.

The three dishes here are Tonkotsu Ramen, Tri Colour Dragon Maki (these two I have tried) and Salmon Sashimi Don. The Tonkotsu Ramen was delicious! The noodles were al dente, toppings were great with three generous, tender slices of chashu which is more than the usual one or two slices that many places offer. The broth was nice, although I feel it did lack a bit of depth in flavour. The Tri Colour Dragon Maki was nice, but I felt that the pieces were definitely on the small side to get a true taste of the dish as the fish is hidden by the rice, sauce and dressing. The dining atmosphere itself was very pleasant with beautiful decor and attentative staff which just made the experience more comfortable. Tonkotsu Ramen - 7/10 Tri Colour Dragon Maki - 5/10

Genuinely the best Japanese restaurant I've eaten at in the UK. Good selection of dishes - skilled sushi preparation, excellent range of traditional dishes, and home comforts too. Always busy, and deservedly so.

I went to Tokyo Izakaya today with my family. Food was absolutely banging, atmosphere was nice, staff really friendly. A bit expensive compared to other Japanese restaurants but all the money was worth it. I will definitely go back again.

I met Christine and yui I hope I've spelt your names right? Lovely service exactly what I came for. I went to Tokyo izakaya based on a yakuza game. takoyaki has opened up my taste buds. I'm coming back when it's more quiet to try more of the menu. Hope to see yui and Christine complements to all staff and including the chefs from daz and Steph.

Went here for dinner on a Friday night. Since it was last minute, we walked in and had to wait less than 5 minutes (will make reservation for our next visit!). Saw the good reviews online, and was so happy that it lived up to our expectations! We have been searching for an authentic and great Japanese restaurant here in Birmingham. And Tokyo Izakaya is definitely tick the box! Ordered the Salmon Lover platter (sashimi, nigiri, sushi), Gyu Don and Takoyaki. Everything was so so good. We were impressed with how good the salmon was. So fresh and literally melts in our mouth. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Had a really amazing experience. Definitely will come back!

We have tried quite a few Japanese restaurants in & out of West Midlands. This one so far is our absolute favourite! Selection isn't massive but it's very good, everyone will find something for themselves! The staff is super nice and smile all the time. Looks like they are genuinely having a good time! We have ordered drinks, chicken gyoza, chicken karage, wagyu sushi, beef ramen and chicken katsu. Every single dish was super delicious and good portion. With hand on my heart, so far it's the nicest food I've had in a long time! As a Japanese food lover I can whole-heartedly recommend this place to everyone. It's very well priced for what you get. We left very full and very happy, the whole staff says goodbye to you as you leave 😊. 11/10

Will not go again, it is quite expensive but not worth in food quality

I can't lie this is just the best Japanese resto I have been to in both London and Birmingham and maybe even Tokyo haha. I always come here at least once a week.
