Toby Carvery in Basildon

Have to say I wasn't particularly impressed. To be told, after 2 hours of bad service that one of our party couldn't have their chosen desert because it took too long to prepare and they needed the table back is just awful. Along with the drinks machine not working, and generally unclean toilets, I cannot recommend this Toby.

Excellent service and excellent customer experience

Service was fine but food was cold turkey was dry gravy was lumpy but worst thing all the serving spoons were red hot they need some kind of padding on them like the toby in wickford worst experience I've had at this one in basildon

It was very busy but staff worked very hard to make sure everything ran smoothly. The vegetables though were almost cold and as I do not have gravy, there was no way of warming food up.

Well this being my first time at a toby carvary ,i wasnt impressed , my parents friends booked for 7 of us , if you love sunday dinners this is right up your street , as a suffor of ibs , there wasnt much i could eat , as i cant eat cheese or onion , it is in most things on the menu and i dont eat them , so i ended up with garlic bread and a prawn sandwich , dont cone here expecting to eat other things as this is mostly a cavary , the sandwich i had wasnt grwat and the garlic bread wasnt much better ,i left hungry and dissapointed

Very nice, didnt know there were a choice of 5 meats on a Sunday (lamb, beef, gammon, pork, turkey) beef dripping toast potaoes were spot on, veg cooked lovely, everything piping hot was really impressed

Had the most terrible service here...no doubt the staff are racist here. Me and my friend (who are of an ethnic background) was ignored. They rarely came to our table to ask if we wanted anymore drink or even asked if we wanted dessert. They were so quick to take our plates when we finished but never came over again to ask if we wanted dessert knowing we was going for the 2 course meal. We spoke to the manager and she showed no remorse or nothing about our experience. I can tell you now, if you're Caucasian you're good...if you're of ethnic background don't be surprised if you get ignored or walked passed the whole time you're there. We even had to ask to order...absolutely disgusting. Just when you think racism is past all of this, there are still low key people out there who still have this mentality. Never coming to Basildon Toby's ever again. Disgusting behaviour from all staff, especially the manager.

Our food was hot, well cooked. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our visit.

Very nice as we went around 3:30 today Thursday so not busy at all. I would imagine the very busy times would get pretty noisy so ideal time to go. Lovely food, too much of it. Very friendly helpful staff. If you fancy a nice roast dinner definitely the place to go. Very well priced food.

Seated as requested in booking (a gift from family). Online service was easy to use. Grand-children were able to choose their meal without fuss. They even had seconds! Our son had the gut buster portion and was very satisfied

Came with friends, was a good night, food was as expected and tasted good, staff were friendly and a overall good experience.

absolutely no seasoning food was very bland and dull except the pigs in blankets due to the salty bacon. SEASON AND TASTE YOUR COOKING.

Great restaurant, plenty of parking and lots of tables.. very nicely decorated for Christmas too.. Lauren our server was great and thankyou for taking photos of our group!! Great banter with the staff, they always seem to appreciate it .. Definatly recommend. My only criticism is that the brandy sauce needs to have more brandy please !!

My neighbor buys her 8 yr old a kids carvery every day delivered. Hes autistic with aspergers and tourettes and its all hell eat .food is big deal if u get it wrong,ull probably wear it so she dont fight him meat veg etc. Better than mcds

Best visit to a Toby I have had for some time.

It is a nice and quiet place to have breakfast with family and friends. Affordable and tasty, yeah, I recommend.

I did not have the carvery I had the Yorkshire wrap with a side of cheesy potatoes the wrap was nice but they could do a lot more with it like add a bit more food to it the cheesy potatoes are really good would definitely go back

Wow, I haven't been back to a Toby for years having worked there many moons ago. I'm so glad I returned, lovley welcome, fantastic and hot food, friendly chefs and lovely clean restaurant to sit in! Nice portions of meat which was juicy and hot and lovley crispy potatoes! Colin was our server, very attentive and friendly, he really looked after us, recommended the plum Crumble for puddings a really enjoyed it! Highly recommend! Thank you Brian, Colin and the team!

Fantastic Sunday Carvery! I have not been back to a Toby Carvery for years after working there many moons ago! I'm so glad I returned, lovley welcome, fantastic hot food, friendly chefs and lovley clean restaurant to sit in! Nice portions of meat which was juicy and hot and lovely crispy potatoes! Colin was our server very attentive and friendly, he really looked after us, recommended the plum crumble for puddings and really enjoyed it! Highly recommended! Thank you Brian, Colin and the team!

Not the best visit food was very poor but I am a lover of Toby restaurants.This one was poor

Brought to our table quickly which was ready with high chair as requested. After that, service was lacking because the waiter was hard to find. Every table had to look for him for menus, the bill and to pay. Carvery was lukewarm at best, carrots were grey, Yorkshire pudings were dried out, gravy had a skin from being reheated to basically room temp, defoe being brought out fresh. Kids chicken burger had the most paltry sized anemic nuggets imaginable. Kids meal came immediately but we had to queue 20mins for carvery. There are no trays at carvery so we all had to queue individually while one of us watched the kids so we all ate separately. Overall, it was awful and we'll never be back. I have no idea why it was packed or why there were people waiting for tables

wait times are mental absolutely disgusting

Always try to visit 2-3 times a month as lovely treat. Always great service, enjoyed it more on my last visit as parsnip was on the menu. Oh joy.

Very pricey when looking at what you get for it. The staff also were just sat together on their phones which delayed service on an otherwise very quiet evening. On top of that, the chef seemed absolutely miserable. I don’t expect anything out of the ordinary or above and beyond to any extent. But at least just prioritise customers when they arrive and serve everyone with a smile. These are the bare minimum expectations and it’s a shame to see that even these standard can’t be upheld.

Very clean restaurant and lovely service from a particular waitress. It was lovely to see parsnips and sprouts as a choice added to the vegetables.

Very good food, great staff and good value for money. You can get an extra large plate that you can refill, a refillable drink and a desert for less than £25. Would definitely recommend to any roast dinner lovers

Had the Sunday carvery and it was exquisite

this never arrived and I never got a refund as apparently it was recorded. ion Paul has had a lovely meal on me £60 down the drain

Food was good, prices also alright. It took a while for them to bring the bill after clearing the plates away but overall good experience and definitely will be returning.

Tried the breakfast today and have to say it was terrible Worse than a cheap all inclusive breakfast in some shady hotel It was either burnt or uncocked The eggs was snotty The sausage burnt And the hash browns wet and uncooked Now I’ve had roasts here before and they seem ok But avoid for breakfast as just about the worse I’ve had

Rachel was our server and the 2 points go to her.food i would give 0 if i could. The food was awful no taste bland greasy .first time ive been basildon and never again.when rachel asked if we enjoyed it i said no it was cold .she said if we had said she would have heated it up in microwave.so you spend all that money to heat food in microwave.no thanks. We got 4 pounds off our bill.but thats not the point food was cold and greasy and bland.

The food was very good as was the staff.. Unfortunately the toilets especially the ladies were appalling smelly and very dirty and unhygienic as a result dirty toilets=dirty kitchen= unacceptable

It's a Toby Carvery, reasonable food/prices etc. Service could be a little better.

My whole experience was great . The place was clean . The staff very friendly and professional. Food was amazing and well presented.

Went there for the 'too good to go' app order. Staff were polite and friendly, saw to us quickly, and the food was absolutely spot on! Been a few more times for the reason as above and my review will not change. Thanks Toby

Dinner was beautiful. Plenty to choose from. So was the pudding. The waiter was friendly and gave prompt service

The toby at festival leisure is clean and tidy, well presented both inside and out . The staff where welcoming and friendly. We didn't wait to long as we was bit early and sat in small bar area with our drinks. The waitress was nice. The only things that let toby down for me and my husband where, The meat was carved too thinly and small portion, the stuffing was dry and no mini dessert and coffee offer on menu.

Not ordered from basildon before but probably won’t again as not nice food over cooked meat fatty and cold

You know what to expect from Toby's a good Sunday dinner, the food was OK, all bar the potatoes I had 3 types and didn't eat any, it was like they had been undercooked & burnt all at once, the rest was lovely including dessert. Overall good but spud do better.

We came to Toby carvery in Basildon today (16-09) what a pleasure it was came there with my children and partner, Tony who was serving the meat he was very pleasant and couldn’t be anymore helpful whilst I was trying to sort the kids food out his a top bloke, loren who was waitress we brilliant very helpful and nothing was every too much. Excellent customer service from them both 😄

Ordered breakfast with a portion of hash 3 browns. We got 9 hash browns because they are burnt,stale and inedible! Nothing about this breakfast was nice. Complete waste of money

Toby carvey has gone up in price ,and only gave me two slices of wafer thin meat , I asked for a bit more ,said only allowed what he gave me , the beef is now all gristle, and very tough , not good

Went Monday 26 at 4, food cold, a lot of dishes empty, no gravy, carvery dirty.carrots on floor, lots of staff they should have one just for cleaning. Been going down hill for ages needs a good shake up in food hygiene and cleanliness.

Really shocked at how Toby breakfast has gone down hill! It was awful. Hash browns rock solid, sausages like charcoal. So disappointed. Won't be returning for breakfast again

Always get a friendly welcome and Kelly always goes above and beyond. Nothing is too much trouble and always ask to sit in her section.

Stopped going for breakfast because even being there at opening time food was burnt and cold went to the Wickford one excellent even had black pudding and pancakes but my wife convinced me to have a home delivery carvery has that was fine last time should have known better ordered one large one standard and 2 dessert 50 pounds it came mine only had turkey no pork as ordered veg was only peas and carrots mash roast potatoes and stuffing discussedin phoned basildon carvery assistant got manager who simply said ring delivery and get refunded we didn't do that as it's not there fault we will never have anything from there again and will be shure to share our experience with everyone totally discussedin and very poor all round we all work hard for our money and when you treat yourself you don't expect this they ask me to ring them nothing ever gets done as this would have been dealt with on the day

it was cold, turkey really dry, no pork, gravy congealed, carrots were brown in places potatoes were hard and it all had obviously been under the lamps for a long time, only good thing was yorkshire pud and that was also cold. All in all terrible

Great:- The staff, brilliant. I doubt you can improve, I have complained, and other friends / relatives have complained on many visits to Basildon and Thomas Kemble, we kept returning assuming we were just unlucky on past visits, but have now given up Toby's completely. The food is always somewhere between barely warm and cold. We visited Tony's often , mainly because we were given gift vouchers as presents from family. I will now be telling them we no longer want them. Please accept this is not a complaint in the hope of you giving compensation free visits. We would no longer visit Toby even if all future meals were free. Following this review and having not visited Toby for a long time, my daughter visited us and informs us she has booked Toby for Tues 13th Aug at 12.10, reluctantly we went 5 guests in all. As usual brilliant staff, Bearing in mind that the restaurant had only just started to serve lunch, only one word can describe it " crap". All the food was cold, including the gravy which staff have previously said" pour gravy on cold food, warms it up". Some of the pork was to hard to eat the roasties were to hard to cut, the waitress said after the meal, " if you told me it was cold, I would have "nuked" it. Everyone I know says its always cold I can't understand how you get return customers. Pub carvery and other restaurants manage to serve hot food, something is drastically wrong.

The service was good and friendly, the food let it down, most of our party of 5 had the carvery, potatoes were hard, and the food cold even the gravy. You really need to re think how to keep your food hot. Also for myself not alot on offer for Vegetarians, a nice grain salad would be ideal and jacket potatoes.

Always good value. Went early today and the food was hot and fresh. The place was fairly quiet and the service was attentive.

Was due originally at 6:45 arrived at 7:45 2 hungry kids had to go out to supermarket to get kids alternative food, roast potatoes not eatable worst meal in ages, the driver said the app was having problems so I know it wasn’t his fault

Sausages cooked too long no egg with meal. However the driver was very polite & and great representation for your restaurant.

The quality of Toby Carveries in my opinion is sadly lacking. We took up the offer of an over 60's lunch for £6. The staff were excellent,friendly and not overly attentive. However the overall meal disappointed. I opted for the Beef and Gammon. The Beef was the last piece of a joint and though tasty was dry. Gammon excellent. Vegetables seem to have been standing for a long time as not many customers (Place was virtually empty) so therefore not being eaten. The roast potatoes were not all crispy and very bland and chewy. Carrots seem undercooked with the cauliflower cheese just about passing with little cheese. Dessert of Honeycomb Sundae was superb. A pint of shandy at £6 and a soda and lime at £3 was exorbitant in my view. Have been here before and it was just so so as was the sister restaurant at Runwell. We arrived at 1.30 and I guess if we had come at 12 then maybe everything would have been fresher. It will be a long time before we return

I asked for no tomatoes they covered my food in tomatoes. Clearly no one can read. shambles. refund requested.
