Timbers in Colchester

ordered food at 8:30am should of arrived 9 ish. time kept adding on. food arrived at 10:15 am and it's stone cold!! will have to heat it up in the microwave. £4 delivery charge for this! but the food in timbers is always lovely.

I had the beef stew with dumplings. Very nice 👌.

The best breakfast in Colchester, I have been here many times the full English breakfast is always perfect! Everything from their bread (fresh from the bakers) high quality sausages, bacon are amazing. I’m not one for hash browns or fried tomatoes so they happily replace items with bone meat products which is great (extra egg and toast for me!). Highly recommend bit of you’re looking for a weekend breakfast remember to book as this is a very popular place!

Extremely overpriced for what you get your order of lamb shank and you get a shin. When this was brought up to the staff, we was told that they have been selling this for ages and had no complaints. But when you’re out with a butcher who knows his meat

After realising a well known big grand, independent hotel in Colchester could not accommodate our pre booked afternoon tea (no cakes available!) we needed somewhere that could accommodate a group of three for afternoon tea with...about 4 hours notice- Timbers did! Not only were they small enough to think on their feet that yes they could do this (normally you book in advance) but their service was friendly, great and small and welcoming. We had two mini gammon ham sandwiches, cream cheese and cucumber, very delicious coronation chicken (possibly one more but can't recall!) 4 little petite cakes (but just enough!) and a fruit scone with Rhodas clotted cream and Tiptree Jam- and a pot of tea with enough for two cups each. Service was friendly with a smile- and lots of regular check in's. I will say that two cups of tea isnt quite enough and we did need another pot- which did add a little bit to the final bill (although staff had kindly let us know that would be the case!) I did initially think perhaps it might be better to just ask for more hot water- but credit where due- this is not the price point of the bigger hotels- a pretty huge price difference of around £10-£15 less- so little extras this for small, family run business are understandable. Lastly, not everyone knows they do afternoon tea- so if you're not sure- you know now! Thank you for squeezing us in at such hugely short notice- and we loved the fact we had individual cake stands each. Overall a good price, with nice food and friendly staff- they only thing to improve- didn't know they were owned by the equally love Number 21 next door ( I think that is the name) - we found out at the end that we could have sat in their lovely little garden terrace for have it- on such a lovely day we properly would have chosen to do this had we known at the start. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

Wow wow wow what a amazing charming little gem the food was restaurant quality the lamb shank was just delightful so tasty the sausage and mash was plentiful and was huge value for money absolutely loved the Pimms shame we couldn’t stay longer the staff was very very nice went above and beyond and didn’t pressure us to leave even though it was close to closing time truly outstanding I look forward to visiting again in the near future :) keep up the good work guys and girls thank you once again ;)

Great Breakfast at a affordable price Lovely breakfast at the heart of Colchester City Centre, all the items were of a high quality which can be hard to find in some places (a lot tend to use massive produced cheap product) All the staff were friendly, quick to seat you & serve Lou cooks a banging breakfast, I’ll definitely be returning

Popped in for a quick lunch with family. What a treat. We were made aware of the specials by Lou who wasn't wrong when stating it was a great toastie, the waitress Lucy was great and I would highly recommend anyone to pop in for something eat or drink.

I found a groupon deal for this restaurant- booked online with groupon for my choosen Saturday, turned up at Timbers and there was no booking. The staff were very rude and was going to turn us away. i had driven 30 mins to come here as well. Waited about 15 mins at the front desk while they try to sort, worst experience of my life. They say they have issues with groupon so why use them then? They said if my voucher didnt work I would have to pay. Wont be ever coming back. Food was ok nothing special and the staff need to learn how to talk to customers, very rude and not accommodating as i say don't use groupon for deals at Timbers if there are issues. rather pay full price than go through all this again. Staff made us feel unwelcome and tried to get us out as quickly as possible.

All staff Lou,Pete, Ella and Jaime provided great food and service. Lou made a fab vegetable curry and was really helpful in terms of accommodating my daughters allergy. The brownie for desert was wonderful too. Lunch at 3pm meant the restaurant was not too busy.

I organised a thank you event for a group of volunteers and Timbers did us a buffet style afternoon tea and it was absolutely fabulous. All 20 of us loved it, the food was delicious, the service was 10/10 and the price was great value. Professional, polite and friendly. A big thank you to the team that worked on 11/05/24 - Jaime, Lou, Pete, Lucy, Chris, Olly, Gemma and Grace. I thoroughly recommend Timbers.

Visited Timbers today with a Groupon voucher. At first they said they did not receive our booking but a table was quickly found for us. We had a 2 course meal (main and dessert) and a glass of wine. The food was delicious we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Lou the chef came out to check all was ok and had a lovely chat with us. All the staff were very friendly - Jamie, Grace, Gemma, Lucy, Olly, Pete, Chris & of course Lou. We will definitely be returning as we were all very impressed with our meals (sorry we forgot to take photos!!)

My mum and dad are regulars in timbers but it was my first time in their today and it definitely won't be the last. The breakfast was so lovely and they cooked my bacon and eggs exactly how I like them bless them. But the staff are so lovely and so funny. Go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and you can have a laugh with them.

I’ve just had lunch at Timbers with 5 friends today. The service, food and welcome was fantastic as always. The food is great value and is served promptly with a smile! We go to Timbers every Monday and it’s a great way to start the week! Thanks very much to, Ella, Gemma, Maria, Pete and Nicola for looking after us so well. As far as I’m concerned it’s by far the best restaurant in Essex, keep up the good work!

The food is homemade & delicious, whether you go in for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The staff are friendly & helpful in a traditional setting Lou cooks the most delicious full English & an awesome cottage pie. As well as the usual teas & coffees you can also get wine, beers & smoothies.

We had a lovely lunch on a Saturday afternoon, value for money, courtesy of a Groupn voucher which the staff assisted me with the booking beforehand etc. Very friendly and good tasty homemade food. Will definitely visit again!

My nanna, sister and I came to Colchester for a day trip from Southend to look around the shops. After looking online for somewhere to eat we found Timbers: it was the only place to find good traditional home cooked food such as dumplings, cottage pie etc. first feeling when walking in was very homely. A special touch was the board welcoming all visitors to their team, with all their names who are cooking, and those serving the ‘smiles and giggles’. This automatically gave such a warm welcome. All of the ladies up front were more than happy to help, smile and serve. Ella our waitress especially gave her all to us. Along with Gemma in drinks, grace, Millie and Lucy. In the kitchen were Lou, who was wonderful to speak to and made us feel part of the team, along with Pete and Chris. Due to it being Sunday, we had a Sunday roast, we each went for chicken, and we can easily say it is one of the best we have had. All was so fresh and cooked to perfection; made and served with love. To wash it down, we had a great sundae, one lemon meringue, and one Road, was delicious! We would easily travel back to Colchester just to eat here. Wonderful team, wonderful food. Keep it up. Arrived at 3:30pm on Sunday afternoon. The team were very welcoming and we managed to order 3 roast dinners and a soup very late in the day! Great value roast and didn't feel pressured to leave at 4:00. Would thoroughly recommend!

A really lovely little cafe, with exceptional home cooked food. Staff were friendly and we will definitely return. The chef even attended our table and asked if we enjoyed our meal. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Amazing experience on Mother’s Day at Timbers. The chef is so talented, her fresh, homemade soup was particularly good! Food to this high standard and presentation is really hard to find in the area, so a must visit if you are in Colchester. Special mention to the absolutely superb front of house team, nothing was too much trouble; They all work extremely hard to not only create a wonderful atmosphere, they are really keen to please and offer each customer a unique and welcoming experience. We will return again very soon! Keep up the good work all 🫶🏻

We have been going to timbers for many many years now but only for breakfast which are superb..we decided to go for Sunday lunch..my wife ordered lamb shank which was very very disappointing.. it was not a lamb shank it was a lamb knuckle which is the fore leg of the lamb.it contains approx 4oz of lamb the rest was knuckle bone...I have been a butcher for 46 years..and have never sold a knuckle bone as a lamb shank..the matter was resolved but £13.95.for a knuckle bone...

Timbers has become a staple for my partner and myself, we've tried others but this place keeps on winning. You won't find a more delicious meal, for a better price. End of story! Lovely staff too and I've always been a fan of the cosy interior. Personal recommendation: Beef stew and Dumplings, tastes incredible and always brings back good memories.

Had a wonderful experience, lovely team. The food was delicious. We had a 99th birthday lunch for quite a few if us, there was very little confusion with the meals, everything ran very smoothly. The only downside was the fact the door was a bit small, we also had a wheelchair,and double buggy but had to leave them in the car as there wasn't the room in the upstairs room. They also stayed open a bit over closing time. Would definitely recommend them for the food and service.

First visit to Timbers for a long time (used to visit Colchester regularly). Just as homely as I remember. Glad the herby diced potatoes were still available! Great food, value, service.

First time I have been for breakfast here it was fresh really enjoyed. Sausages tasted great, you can really taste flavours. Can't fault anything great service.

Very nice rustic place, welcoming atmosphere. Food and service top class too. Will visit when I am in the area next. Probably better to call and book during peak (lunch) hours.

Booked a table for 2 for 11am. We arrived at 10:50 and waited to be seen to. I told the staff member we’d booked and she seemed displeased. Another couple arrived behind us and hadn’t booked and were turned away. Once seated, I waited until 11:15 before I had enough of waiting. Staff constantly walking past. Not a single warm welcome, or a hello. I’m not stupid to see that it was busy BUT to not even be offered a drink whilst I waited was just poor, especially for a family run business.

Excellent food and service, visiting town from Australia and found this great little Cafe on Google search and was not disappointed. The menu and specials on the day satisfied all in our group and the service we received from the staff was very friendly making us fell welcome, Recommend to all. Thanks Timbers.

Can not go wrong really, when walked through the door was greeted well, asked if booked we hadn't, even that didn't seem to deter them of finding a table for us. We ordered the English breakfast which comes with a drink, and before we knew it the food was served, that in it self was amazing, v/tasty millie and kat were always very helpful about all we asked about, All in all I we would really recommend the TIMBERS.

Sunday roast is very good value (£10 for a beef one) compared to pubs like Greene King ones. Atmosphere is cosy. Lovely wooden beams. Traditional English food. Steak and ale pies etc. They can't do coffees though, but it IS English. Americano, espresso, flat whites, all very weak. But you don't go there for the coffee, so all good. Great staff, very good turn around times and professional. Could probably do with nice lighting (lamps / wall lamps) upstairs but it's still nice anyway.

Came here in a party of 7 to celebrate my 30th birthday with the grandparents, and it’s true what they say about the quality of the breakfasts! Absolutely great quality, locally sourced meat and produce, cooked perfectly by Lou and Pete, who even came out to say happy birthday, which was a really nice touch! The waiting staff were amazing and really attentive for such a large table for breakfast, so thank you to Maria, Ella, Tia and Charlotte. Highly recommend Timbers to anyone!

FANTASTIC a party of 4 yes no problem, you okay with being up stairs. when asked whether the milk was oatmilk (ordered) she wasnt sure so she changed it. food was plenty and delicious atmosphere was lively

Me and my partner came here for the first last week and we’re so impressed with how good the food tasted and how lovely all the staff were. We came for breakfast and the portions were really good and the food was just really tasty. We were both surprised how little the bill was considering the quality of the meal and you could tell it was all freshly done. Will definitely be back soon!

There where 7 of us booked in for breakfast to celebrate my sons 30th birthday. We all had a wonderful breakfast the food was fantastic especially the sausages!! All the food arrived together and was lovely and hot. Special thanks goes to Maria and chef Lou who made my son feel really special on his birthday. The trial waitress Charlotte was also very helpful and I hope you keep her on as I’m sure she will be a credit to your already great team.

I ordered the lasagna and it was not as advertised on their website it came in a silver gravy boat and it was grey liquid and an acrid taste through the mince and no layers just a bowl of slop. I complained and they took dish away and I had a different meal but no compensation was given as also I had to sit and eat my dinner on my own as the people I was with had finished theirs, very disappointed.

I was given a voucher as a gift for afternoon tea at Timbers. Myself and my best friend had a lovely time. There was a good selection of sandwiches and the cakes and scones were delicious. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and there was a very welcoming atmosphere in the restaurant. Thank you Tia, Lou, Nick and Maria for looking after us so well! We will definitely return and will recommend to family and friends.

Absolutely loved eating here. I happened to order for delivery from them and realised how good they were for gluten free and how good the food was, so made sure I ate in there the next time I was in town. Such a lovely atmosphere, the people who worked there were helpful and friendly and the food was just as good, if not better than I'd had before. They were also really helpful with the gluten free options in the cafe as well. I brought two people with me and they both loved it as well so I am sure we will be back!

The breakfast 100% was perfect but the coffees were terrible, very weak and the young lady seriously needed a lesson in making coffees I didn’t realise anybody could make terrible coffee, also she over charged us so maybe was having a bad morning

First visit, used Groupon Voucher. Had issues trying to book both on the Groupon Reservation Platform and the Web Site, but e mailed venue and they called me back. Internal decor is pretty basic, but good selection of dishes available, even though slightly restricted menu using voucher. We both selected the Steak & Ale Pie, which was a great choice, beef was tender and delicious tasting. We both enjoyed our afters, I went for the Apple Crumble and Custard and my DW went for the Chocolate Brownie and Ice Cream, both received top marks. Great value for money, and can see why this is a very popular informal venue.

We arrived with our Groupon booking, the young lady said they're closing at 3pm instead of 4pm, it was a Sunday as they had no booking. They accommodated us by letting us stay and use the voucher, we had a lovely two course meal, my partner couldn't buy another Cider as they had already cashed up so did feel a little put out and rushed at times. But good food the staff were nice.
