Tia's in County Durham

The food was delicious, we had the Tia Rose onion which was lovely! All our main courses were amazing too. Not the fastest service, but it didn't matter as it was well worth it when it arrived, and the staff were lovely. Definitely recommend Tia's! 😁

I really wanted to love this place as I really enjoy Mexican food but unfortunately the food i tried was mediocre. It’s white people Mexican food. To me there is very little that’s “authentic “. The menu is a bit of a hodge podge of Mexican and pizzas and other bits and bobs which I thought was quite odd. They did try and accommodate my love of spice but they didn’t have anything spicy available. They had a couple of salsas which were nice but I’d have liked a jug full of them. In reality I got about a tablespoons worth. The spiced onion rings were banging though - super crispy and not oily in the slightest. The steak was also cooked nicely but I wasn’t given a choice on how it was cooked. I’d have had it rare (not medium) while my mother would have sent it back to be cremated. My friend had a different dish but she also felt the same as me. The staff were nice and friendly but we had both food and drink we’d not ordered delivered to our table multiple times. I also asked for recommendations and the waitress had to ask someone else for their advice so clearly didn’t know the menu. Finally it was a Saturday night but it took over an hour from starters to main which for me isn’t acceptable.

Despite not being local to Durham, we visited on a friend's recommendation and were blown away by the service and atmosphere – don't miss the sombrero photo opportunity! My Steak and King Prawn Fajitas were excellent, with generous portions and fantastic flavor (though I'd suggest chopping the king prawn tails). The "Tia rose" starter for two was incredibly large and could easily feed four. However, our friends' Chicken Kiev pizza was a bit of a letdown, as the excessive toppings made it soggy and undercooked, requiring a trip back to the oven. While their pizza wasn't great, my fajitas were definitely excellent.

La comida es auténtica y deliciosa l, a un precio muy razonable con una hora feliz, y el servicio al cliente es tan amable. 10 stars for atmosphere and service!! What an amazing please. The owner has done such a great job in making the place so welcoming and fun. We arrived peak time on a Saturday night, the place was rammed with diners clearly having the best choice and all celebrating birthdays yet they still found space to squeeze the two of us in and were the perfect level of attentive to check we were OK. Amazing choice of food, vast array of drinks including delicious mocktails. Cannot praise or recommend this place highly enough. Will definitely visit again when in Durham 😊😊😊

Absolutely loved my first time at Tia’s and I’m already planning to go again! I was cautious because I’m not a fan of spicy food but there were loads of options for me! I decided to try the chicken fajita’s which were lovely! Our 2 servers, Nicola and Beth couldn’t have done more for us, they were brilliant, making sure we were all seated quickly and looked after without being invasive. The food arrived faster than expected and it was so good that we were all trying what each other had ordered. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, with the music giving us all holiday vibes. Will definitely be back soon! :)

Nunca había estado antes, pero había escuchado muy buenos informes al respecto . . no decepcionó. Éramos una fiesta de tres y pedimos fuera del menú de la hora feliz. Pedimos la rosa tia y honestamente fue increíble! Si intentas algo debe ser que... Luego tuvimos las enchiladas de chile o como dijo mi amigo Billy cheef 😊.. con papas fritas caseras.. no pude comerlo todo ya que estaba relleno pero el ambiente y el personal eran tan amables y serviciales.. Claire vino y tuvo una charla con nosotros, sin duda volveremos.

Wow what a fantastic experience. Heard great reviews about Tia’s so thought we’d give it a try and we were not disappointed. Greeted with a smile and shown to our seat by a lovely team member. Friendly and welcoming. Drinks were served promptly followed by our delicious starters and main course. The place has a really cool and cosy atmosphere. It’s just up the road on Claypath from the Gala theatre so convenient for parking as well. I think we’ll be making this a regular dining spot. I’d say it’s in the top five restaurants in Durham city. Great value, great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, great staff!

Wow. Tia’s was absolutely amazing. Could not have asked for a better evening. Nicola was so helpful and kind, having a good laugh with our group. It was my friends birthday and asked if we would like to give her a birthday shot. They played some funky birthday tune in the restaurant and had a sing for her whilst she wore a sparkler on the sombrero she brought over. And the food was just as great. Can’t recommend this place enough. Already excited to come back next time we’re in Durham!!

Food was terrible. The rice tasted like Uncle Bens. The Nacho were burn't and stuck to the plate. The only thing that was good was the warm welcome and service.

What's not to love about Tia's!? We've been planning to visist for ages and finally got round to it and it did not disappoint. Beautiful food, lovely friendly staff, great atmosphere! We can't wait to go back.

What an amazing place. My wife is coeliac and needs gluten free food. Just wanted to say how nice it is to find somewhere that offers a wide ranging gluten free menu. That coupled with friendly attentive staff and lovely food made for a great night out. We will definitely be returning soon.

I had the shrimp tostada and Mexican platter. Shrimp tostada was my favourite because the shrimp was beautifully charred and buttery. The pickled onions and Pico de gallo was balanced. The chicken and corn enchiladas had a good bean cheese ratio similar to California Mexican style. The spinach chimichanga was naughty and crunchy. Next time I will try their other seafood and things with that delicious Pico. I asked for no peppers and the dishes were all delicious. I hate when a Mexican place throws freaking peppers all over everything just for colour.

Fantastic little Mexican restaurant with lovely friendly staff. We've eaten at tia's on numerous occasions and from our 1st visit felt really comfortable there. Being coeliac I've found their understanding of food allergies is second to no other and the gluten free menu is brilliant.

With a broad menu and eye-catching decor, Tia's was an instant hit. We thoroughly enjoyed the Chimichanga with beef chilli, Quesadilla with bacon, Cauliflower bites, and Skins with dips. Serving with a smile, our helpful waitress gave us thoughtful advice to aid us in choosing the perfect dishes. Additionally, hand sanitizer is considerately and discreetly provided on each table. Can't recommend this gem highly enough!

Always amazing food and service

The food and service were exceptional. I booked for a Christmas work do, and they were incredibly helpful from the get go. I ordered the blooming onion followed by the tacos and they were both unreal. I'd definitely recommend!

App won’t let me record correct delivery - 25 mins late. Food quality not up to usual standards ( no doubt being busy and Christmas used as excuses, 3 chicken goujons all smaller than my little finger, aneamic limp undercooked chips and average ench

Amazing! I was completely impressed by Tia’s. My sister has been telling me to try it ever since I got diagnosed with coeliac disease. Their gluten free menu is incredible, the amount of good options was fantastic- means I’ll have to go back. They take coeliac disease (& other allergens) very seriously, which means you can just relax and enjoy your food. The quality, taste and portion sizes of the food were something else too - delicious! I’m craving the food again already! And my friends told me their (gluten) food was very tasty too. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming - always a good sign when staff have smiling faces. The prices were reasonable - especially at happy hour, and even not at happy hour the portions are huge, and you are getting good quality food. Had a really good experience here, I will return and be recommending to my friends and family!

Shockingly bad experience from both Just eat and the restaurant, courier turned up to restaurant, then left without the order didn't come back. order stuck in the app saying courier was waiting for nearly 2 hours, whilst trying to cancel the order. I was unable to cancel the order due to the phantom courier stopping the option from showing. the restaurant wouldn't cancel and asked me to contact JustEat via the partners customer service line to cancel, which as a customer I couldn't. shocking

Very good, went for my partner's birthday. I had the Mexican Chicken, a bit like butter chicken, with coriander and pepper, very nice. My partner had a fajita, which comes served on a skillet and you make your own with 4 wraps. We had their onion rose starter, which is a bit like a massive onion bhaji. I'm stuffed. If you like TRUE Mexican food then this is the place for you! My wife is from America and she says its just like the food you can get over in the state's. Will be back again SOON. Ow and the have an AMAZING vegan menu to choose from.

Reservamos un viernes por la noche y llegamos temprano para obtener los menús temprano y no nos decepcionó. El servicio fue educado y amable y la comida era muy buena. Compartimos los entrantes, que eran muy sabrosos y la factura a £ 102 para 4 de nosotros incluyendo 2 botellas de vino fue gratamente sorprendente.

La mesa estaba lista cuando llegamos, camarera tomó nuestra orden de bebidas enseguida. Tardamos un poco en pedir nuestra fiesta, uno es vegetariano, así que tomó un tiempo tener una charla con camarera muy bien informada sobre lo que era adecuado para ella. La comida llegó, caliente y muy sabrosa. La primera vez para nuestros amigos, que habíamos comido allí antes, todos disfrutaron de la comida, así que sin duda volvería. Ambiente encantador en el restaurante, el personal estaba allí en el fondo, pero no siempre preguntando si todo el mundo estaba bien, que era perfecto. Solíamos comer aquí hace bastantes años y sin duda lo pondremos en nuestra lista de regreso.

We got take out. It was fine but expensive. There are great reviews here but if you are a North American you will find this Mexican food average.

I have visited this area lots and lots of times. However I attended recently with friends and I was practically chased out of the restaurant. Although I do remember reading that there is a 2-hour limit on tables, we weren't giving any prior warning that we had approached this and we were in the middle of talking when we were told that we couldn't order any more drinks and then we had to leave as the person who needed our table was at the door. Fair enough. But then to be charged £5 for a small portion of guacamole sent me over the edge. I would recommend this restaurant however I would recommend taking a bank loan with you for the guacamole.

Visité Tia por primera vez y sin duda volvería. No reservamos una mesa, ya que decidimos ir en una noche entre semana y conseguimos una mesa muy bien. El anfitrión era muy amable y atento. Pedimos del menú happy hour y nos sorprendimos gratamente de los tamaños de las porciones, la comida sabía genial (mejor guacamole que he probado! ) y el ambiente era agradable.

A fun place in Durham, interesting decor, good music, staff absolutely fabulous - cheeky, friendly, attentive. Food a bit of a mixed bag, the Tia's rose is fantastic, onion flowers aren't always this perfectly fried. Other dishes all prepared with love (I'd say) but nonetheless a little bit wanting, e.g., Mexican chicken with a thick, but not noticeably spicy rub and toastada with basically a pita base. Would love to come again nonetheless :-). Made with care and love but not outstanding beats outstanding boring dishes.

Looking for a Mexican restaurant on a Monday evening in Durham and we found this little gem. A little way out of the centre, but the walk is well worth the effort. Tia's doesn't look too promising from the outside, but once inside you get a warm friendly welcome to a lovely, cosy family run restaurant. The food was fabulous. Nachos to share to start with followed Enchiladas each for our main course. Accompanied by a glass of decent red wine and a couple of Mexican beers we were very happy. If you love Mexican food take a little walk out of the centre of Durham, you will not be disappointed.

an absolutely amazing find! cracking food that i could have very happily eaten all over again, gorgeous wine, gorgeous beer. the decorations are also amazing and fit the northern area whilst definitely remaining mexican. we went for my dads birthday and they brought him a sombrero with a sparkler, and then gave him a tequila shot ;) absolutely amazing experience will definitely be back next time we’re in durham, thank you so so much!!!

We pre booked ten days before but it was quiet when we arrived as it was a school night (Thursday) . The staff were so friendly and we have to mention our lovely server Nicola. We did the lethal thing and went for a sharing onion rose starter. In a nice way! Wow it was massive and so tasty. Such a huge portion. The chilli beef Chimichanga that I had was amazing and my wife had chicken fajitas with all the trimmings, also fantastic. The food was just lovely. Had a great night and both came out with smiley faces. It’s great value for the quality of food and price. We will be back when we’re in Durham again. Thank you !

Well what can i write that has not already been posted !! We booked as it had been such a long time in been here. Warm greeting from a lovely lady who wished us happy anniversary (i told them when booked) We were given a window seat Young lady came with menu who was very pleasant. She gave us time to choose we went for a bottle of house wine Then a sharing Amigos rose to share for starters. We were not disappointed it was very tasteful. My hubby ordered a Mexican platter which was Beef Enchilada and chicken Chimichanga I opted for the king prawn hanging kebab. The food was beautiful to taste. The young lady came back and checked on us to see if everything was ok. When we finished the lady who greeted us came and asked how long had we been married . My husband told her it 44 years she passed a few more compliments. Which we took thankfully. She then brought 2 free drinks and the 2 sombreros with sparklers in and then the music started Congratulations everyone in the place started clapping !! Atmosphere was amazing Food just brilliant for £60 We will definitely return. Been telling family and friends all about the experience Well done to all the Tia s team

Celebrated our wedding anniversary here and couldn't have made a better choice. Friendly engaging staff, great food and tequila. We started with the amazing Blooming Onion. Crisp batter, not a hint of excess cooking fat. The wife went for the Blackened Salmon bowl. It was well presented, came in a generous portion and was very very tasty. I had Chilli Beef Chimichanga which was soft and crispy in equal measure with great guacamole and a generous portion of chips. All washed down with chilli tequila. Tia's is THE place to eat in Durham

What can we say about this fabulous place. We saw the reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to give it go. We contacted them via email regarding my wife's meat allergy and, within an hour, got a phone call from Nicola asking for more details. We felt comfortable enough with the replies to give it a go. We're so glad we did. The food was amazing and the service superb. Nicola and the owner(sorry, didn't catch your name) made our silver wedding anniversary a night to remember. The atmosphere is great and the place was packed. Please, if you're ever in Durham, give this place a visit, you won't be disappointed.

We were here for an anniversary dinner. The food was amazing, the service was great and they even brought out shots and sombreros to help us celebrate, but the restaurant was very noisy, so if you have sensory overload from ND, maybe bring noise cancelling earphones. Otherwise, really good.

Thought we'd give it a go due to the good reviews. Atmosphere isn't great. Food was meh!! Had nachos to start which was like a thin pizza of lightly topped heated nachos for a tenner. They need more guacamole, salsa and sour cream dollops as there is just not enough to share. Chimichanga was next. Tasty, not very spicy and soon forgotten. In no rush to return unfortunately

The Food was amazing, generous portions and accommodates vegan diets. The lady who served us (who I think was the owner) was bubbly and very attentive. We celebrated a birthday here and made it a wonderful suprise. I definitely recommend for any occasion or even just a meal out!

Absolutely fantastic! Best onion rings ever! Made with real onions - not reconstituted! Ribs amazing! Chips really excellent. Crispy chicken wings truly crispy! Calamari wonderful.

Difficult to rate when there was a large student group that almost took over the restaurant. My order was initially wrong (as were others on my table) but they did remake it but then you are out of kilter with your companions.

A must place to eat in Durham. It's great that happy hour is from Monday- Saturday from 5-7pm (at time of writing). Food is amazing and you get generous portions. We left feeling very full after the enchiladas. Staff were great and they were fast serving our food considering there was a large group in at the same time. Didn't use the toilets so can't comment on the cleanliness of them. If I'm ever back in Durham I would come back because it's great food at great value.

Very good food and drink at a reasonable price. I highly recommend the Tia's rose. In fact, I loved all the starters that I had. My one issue (which I wish I had said something about) was that the glaze on my ribs (as part of the Texas 2 step) was burnt, making them inedible. However the rest of my meal was great. Friendly and efficient service too.

We hooked rather short notice for a party of 10, but they squeezed us in & I am so glad they did. The food is amazing! The staff are so friendly and dead chatty. We got 4 starters to share amongst us & all plates cleared & enjoyed by all, especially the Tia Rose. We all got different mains & every single one had no complaints. This place is awesome! We had a delicious Mexican meal here and left stuffed! The build-a-taco plate was excellent and a lot of fun to eat. My husband really enjoyed his enchilada.

This is a great little restaurant, with very welcoming and friendly staff. They have gluten-free, vegan and gf&vegan separate menus with a large choice of dishes. The food was all delicious and even though the place was mobbed due to the Lumiere festival they still managed to be happy and helpful and attentive.

Enchilada was chicken not the chilli beef ordered. Also just completely plain chicken, no spices or anything else in the wrap to make it Mexican!

Visited at happy hour....the staff are super friendly, I ordered the potato skins, onion rose and Texas 2step. I think the happy hour portions may be slightly smaller compared to the pics in reviews.....but for this I am glad as there was more than enough and good value for money. 1st off the onion rose.....how can onion taste this good??! One of the tastiest things ive ate in a while. The ribs and chicken came out, the ribs were delicious and tender.....I thought I wouldn't eat the chicken goujons as was already full...but they surprised me how nice they were so ended up eating them all. All round great meal, definitely recommend.

Came with my partner on Tuesday after a long journey. We have no regrets and were delighted to have dined at Tia's. Food is excellent, nice drinks menu, friendly staff and varied menu. I would reccomend the con carne.

We visited last minute on Saturday night whilst here on university drop off. The food was delicious, just great quality. Two party members had ribs and said how they fell off the bones. I had Fish Tacos which were amazing, as were the Tia’s rose and Mac & cheese bites starters. Service was exceptional, kind & friendly. Only negative was we were too full to try desserts. Happy we found this place and can’t wait to visit again!

Food not good . we complained at the time and some dishes were taken off our bill ...but would rather enjoy our food. On the up side staff were nice .

If you are reading this, then you may be aware that I wrote a review on May 1st 2023 about our first time here, and at the end I said we would return. Well guess what? We did. On this occasion it was a little quieter than previous, but being in the centre of the university City, and it was the middle of August, we put it down to a lot of students being away for the summer, but it didn't dampen our enthusiasm for the place nor the food. It was lovely to know that Clare remembered who we were, despite 4 months since our last visit, and given that fact she would have seen hundreds of people since, for us, that is where customer service reigns supreme. Again they surpassed themselves with the food because it was on level 10, and despite spending the night in the area, any other restaurant was not even in our thoughts, but it's the little touches that make places like this, down to things that are not on the drinks menu, that are made in the form of drinks with a secret twist. So now you have read the 2nd review, you are now thinking, shall we go, and the answer SHOULD be yes. Until the next time........

Some of the food was just luke warm, 'hand cooked chips' looked uncannily like they were straight out the freezer.

I visited Tia's tonight with my husband and 2 children. We all had lovely meals and drinks. My daughter loved her mocktail (soft tail) and we enjoyed the 'rose' and some tortilla chips to start. My husband and I loved our mains (build your own fajita and chimichanga) and one pizza and chips was more than enough for the kids to share as they had some of the starter and a dessert. Dessert was also spot on! Staff were so friendly and we loved the restaurant decor. We will definitely return!

Well worth a visit if you happen to be in Durham. Great food and Nicola’s ‘secret’ cocktail was delicious! Lovely fun place and amazing service. Will be back for sure!
