Only visited for a Spa Day wlth a cream tea, but everything about the hotel, the spa and the staff were great. The spa itself is beautifully presented, well Looked after with everything you need in a spa. The terrace with the views across to Hope Cove is stunning. We look forward to returning again.

My partner and I stay at the Thurlestone for a weekend each January. The hotel is superb. The rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable, the service is faultless, and the team always ensure that every need is catered for. The spa is also fantastic. Take an afternoon walk down to the beach before a swim before supper.

If you are looking for a luxury hotel experience on the popular and scenic Devon coast, look no further. We had a balcony room with a sea view - it had modern decor, a comfortable bed and best of all, a 'rain shower'! We had a scrumptious breakfast and strolled down the nearby beach, before returning to the hotel to work up an appetite for a boozy cream tea with a game of tennis on the courts! Finish the day off with a fantastic spa experience and an indulgent dinner in the restaurant. What more could you ask for ☺️

I have been visiting Thurlestone for 30 years and where so many hotels have dropped their standards the Thurlestone keeps getting better , I dont know how they manage to recruit and importantly keep their lovely members of staff in such a rural location. The staff are all cheerful, charming and highly trained they are a delight and a credit to the hotel. Some have been there all the 30 years I have been visiting. The food is wonderful, Sunday lunches, , celebratory birthday dinners and even feeding 230 people a cracking meal at a ball. The location is incredible and the views from the breakfast table world class. I would stay at The Thurlestone just for the breakfast! Please thank all your wonderful staff front of house, kitchen maintenance, cleaning and management for their fantastic efforts to make our stay so wonderful. We will be back soon!

The rooms are beautiful with big plush super king beds and comfy seats to sit in looking out over thurlestone sands beach and the golf club. A very relaxing view. The shower and bath are fantastic. The service from all staff in the hotel and the Village Inn was excellent and they were so attentive to our every need and nothing was too much for them. Can't wait to visit again soon

A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting with a view of the sea. It has a friendly feel with nearly all the staff saying hello and smiling. Everyone was keen to answer any queries we had. The bedroom was spacious and clean with a large balcony and chairs to sit and take in the view. The spa facilities are very good, we both had a massage which was expertly done. We enjoyed the outdoor pool, it has plenty of sun loungers and a nice bar. The food in both the restaurant and the pub was excellent, we will definitely visit again.

Enjoy a room with balcony and sea view, topped up with intense deep-fry extraction fan smell - if you complain the answer is ‘it will stop at 9pm, when serving food is finished’… Also enjoy style of food from the 90’s, served by a waitress with zero warmth and complete lack of interest in the beauty of hospitality. The answer to a simple request of removing the pineapple from your child’s pizza is ‘we can’t because it’s all prepared’ but it’s ok as I had managed to convince the host to speak to the chef, if he/she could kindly accommodate this small amend. Be prepared if you order a bottle wine, you’ll be asked to say the number displayed on the menu next to the wine, rather than the grape type and the region; and don’t be shocked if you are also asked to confirm if it was red or white, so the server can take away the right shape of glass prepared on your dining table. No point to mention the disappointment in quality to the management, as you will be completely ignored, with a meaningless ‘we are sorry’. I don’t quite understand how you can get away with such a poor experience in a place where you pay £500/night, please don’t waste your money on this hotel, find a cosy place nearby with kindness and personality.

An absolutely beautiful place to stay. The view from my room was amazing. Was my first time in a 4.5 star hotel and I was blown away. The room was clean and well equipped and comfortable and the bathroom was was lovely. The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming and the breakfast served was very good quality and very well cooked but a large selection of foods to choose from. Was there for one night on business and said to my colleague that if I ever won the lottery I would live there in the room I stayed in. A wonderful experience.

We arrived on a grey rainy day. The hotel stood as a massive rendered tired concrete building. Outside seating areas obviously empty with no pillows or umbrellas up. We sat in the lounge area overlooking a car park in front of a fire place not lit. The lounge was comfy and the children loved the chess board! It was certainly the highlight. We then moved to the bar area which had a much better view of the sea in the distance. The service was great and appreciated the time spent in preparing our drinks. We then ventured downstairs into the ballroom area where we enjoyed a little table tennis in what felt like a forgotten room tucked away that most of the guests would not even know existed. We then ventured into the garden area and noted the rendered walls surrounding the swimming pool area locked away. The golf course and tennis courts looked great though. Overall, it could really do with lift. Perhaps it was the grey day and timing. I'm wondering if it needs architectural changes, maybe creating an underground parking area so cars do not feature in the view. Also completely renovating the exterior of the swimming area to fit the stone/ slate of the Devon landscape. Maybe even some olive trees at the entrance. I don't know but it needs something!

What a great find, the tapas was fantastic! We ordered 3 vegetarian dishes each and that was plenty to share between us. We have a very good tapas restaurant where we live, so it was interesting to compare. There was a good mix of dishes we recognised and ones that were completely new to us. And who knew that cabbage could be so amazing as a tapas dish (Burnt Hisbi Cabbage)? It was a fabulous flavoursome meal from first bite to last!

So I've been compelled to update my review of this quaint little pub. We have been coming here multiple times a year for the last 6 years. It is always the highlight of our trip and the food is the gold standard of great pub food. Our latest trip here was nothing short of that. With the french food magician (Dom) injured and out of action, the food was still to his high standard (so a huge congratulations to the kitchen staff). Even though they were understaffed they made us feel welcome and any problems were quickly resolved, with apologies and an amazing sense of humour. Thanks Adam for being a great barman! Of course we will be back in a few months for a next trip down here.

I always visit the River Shack whenever I'm in the Devon area. Delicious food, friendly service & fabulous views. My wife always enjoys the yummy soups at lunch & I have enjoyed an excellent seafood spaghetti. Highly recommend, well worth a visit!

Outstanding local business. Food quality recently seems to have taken a major improvement and it was already good. They have new GF bread which makes all the difference too. A long standing community hub and caring staff. Not cheap but good value.
