What a great find, the tapas was fantastic! We ordered 3 vegetarian dishes each and that was plenty to share between us. We have a very good tapas restaurant where we live, so it was interesting to compare. There was a good mix of dishes we recognised and ones that were completely new to us. And who knew that cabbage could be so amazing as a tapas dish (Burnt Hisbi Cabbage)? It was a fabulous flavoursome meal from first bite to last!

Delicious perfection. My favourite was the meatballs in ragu. Meatballs in ragu: delicious tomatoey loveliness, with soft, tender meat -10/10 Torched mackerel: not as good as my previous visit but still nice -8/10 Smoked haddock fishcake: incomparable delightfulness, deliciously crispy batter and nice sauce -10/10 Chicken pinchos: fresh, spicy and perfectly cooked -10/10 Chocolate pot with orange and cardamom: soft, airy and not too sweet. Subtle notes of cardamom and orange. Rich and indulgent, but a bit too big of a portion -10/10 Staff were friendly and efficient, and I enjoyed the atmosphere very much. Thanks to Luscombe for making such amazing drinks. O.E. Neith, age 10

Ate there this week, the food was great and wine also great. Some of best tapas I’d had for some time. Highly recommend the wine list and menu. Sadly the staff seemed worn out and unfortunately took a long time to ask if we’d like a drink and then went into the kitchen and came back totally forgetting our drinks order. Then later someone else came over and took our order. We were sat at bar so we couldn’t be missed, but were. It was quite awkward. Staff seemed tired and overstretched and didn’t seem very happy.

It's not often I get quite cross at a restaurant or bar but Ben's Tapas last night (28/12/22) really pushed my buttons. My wife, daughter and I went in to the bar at 5.15 and asked for food. We were told that food was not gong to be served until 6pm. Fair enough. we sat down at a table that was not reserved (we were told to sit where there was not black bottle saying reserved on it) and ordered a drink. At 5.50 I went to the bar to get a menu. Deciding what we would like I returned to the bar to order our food to be told that they weren't serving walk ins and did we have a table reserved. I couldn't believe it. We had said on three occasions about food and no one bothered to tell us that we would not be able to have any. A total sham and a joke how a place is run. We have been a few times but will not return in a hurry.

We booked in here as we came last year during the summer were really impressed. It’s our poochies first time in Totnes with us and we wanted to go somewhere pooch friendly to eat. The staff made a big fuss over little man. On to the food…. We arrived ay 545 and had a happy hour house white with some padron peppers. The house white was so nice, we had a bottle. The food, we had humous fries, spinach mushroom croquettes, whipped labneh with harissa butter, chorizo and butterbean stew. 4 dishes was more than enough for two of us. Obi had to be content with doggie treats. Bill was around £70 but that included two bottles to take away. Lovely place, brilliant friendly staff at the top of Totnes high street. As Arnie once said, We’ll be back

Not that we necessarily expected much bustle on a weekday lunchtime but there was no one out the back, one person in the front window and a small group in the back room upstairs. We enjoy browsing the wine shelves but regrettably one of us had driven so sharing a single bottle let alone two was not on the cards. We hesitated and took the lunch dishes gradually when we should have surrounded ourselves with the lot on one go - hang the cooling rates. We are well disposed to this place but neither the vibe nor the food really gelled. It was alright and good value but that was about it. Maybe it’s the national malaise, nothing optimistic or upbeat. Next time we’ll take the train and come in a lively group on a rolling boil.

Last night a very helpful waitress fitted us in even though we didn't have a reservation. The food and wine were so delicious, we booked again for tonight. If anything the tapas and wine (not to mention the Aprerol Spritzes) were even better. We selected different food and wine from last night so have now sampled quite a bit of the menu. The staff here are probably the nicest and most helpful I have ever come across. Thank you so much for two lovely evenings of gorgeous food and wine.

What a lovely experience. Everything was first class. Certainly the best Tapas I have ever tasted, combined with a great wine selection, it really is that good. The highlight was not the wine that we bought to take home ( I haven’t tried that yet, but am looking forward to an occasion to do it justice) it was Maddie. Maddie served, advised, chatted, recommended, and listened. What a fabulous asset to the organisation!! Her enthusiasm and knowledge were infectious and she sprinkled some much needed sunlight on a very wet and miserable day. Go there, eat, drink and absorb a wonderful ambiance. Congratulations all round.

This place is fab. Good food and an amazing selection of wines (probably the best value wine I've ever seen in a restaurant, as it sort of operates as a bottle shop with a small corkage fee to drink in - awesome!) The tapas may not be perfect Spanish, but it is very good and probably suits the UK/Aussie style of eating more than the Mediterranean style. There is a good bar area downstairs and an outdoor courtyard for casual dining/socialising, with more tables upstairs for group dining.

This was our visit for over a year, so a good opportunity to see if our previous experience of outstanding tapas has been maintained. The simple answer is yes but perhaps the heights were not scaled to the same extent (or it is harder to impress second time around), hence the four stars rather than five.We sampled a good cross-section of the extensive and well-balanced menu, which changes regularly to reflect seasonal ingredients. The highlights included the mushroom arancini, their intensely flavoured liquid cores contrasting beautifully with crispy panko shells. Roast cauliflower was very al dente and flavourfully charred but I couldn't taste the truffle oil. Crab cakes were very good, too, the spicing sufficiently subtle not to overshadow the fresh crab. It was not all vmeat-free: the slow-cooked beef was meltingly tender and went sublimely with a bottle of Nero d"Avola (priced at £14.50 at the table but only £7.99 to buy directly plus £5 corkage, so this would have been a better way to go....). We don't usually do puddings with tapas but made an exception here to share a bread and butter pudding, a divinely rich brioche-based confection with a large dollop of superb ice-cream. Service is young and friendly but cooking most dishes to order inevitably means a few delays and gaps in the flow, so our meal took nearly two hours, just in time for the cinema. The upstairs room lacks atmosphere early in the evening but was probably warmer on a cold night than the downstairs with front door opening regularly.

A strangely titled bar/restaurant. Tapas is a Spanish concept, but here we find food references from Italy, France, North Africa, Switzerland and England, albeit with a strong leaning towards Spain. In a way, this made choosing what to eat quite difficult, especially as some dishes were not as their originators would recognise, especially the rösti. Having lived in Spain, the Spanish tapas were okay, but I’ve had a lot better. Only the prawns with aioli stood out, and perhaps the cold meats, although one was much too fatty for me personally. I ordered calamari, but they never came, so I cannot comment. The patatas bravas were disappointing, as was the bread. As a passing comment, there is nothing wrong with going off the beaten track, borrowing from and being inspired by dishes from different parts of the world. But please make the ride worthwhile. Also, a very minor and even picky point, but it does seem to me that if you are taking from other languages, at least do them the courtesy of spelling the borrowed words correctly, including the accents, tildes and umlauts.I left with a sense of never wanting to return, which is a shame, because being new to the area, I really want to find exciting places to eat, especially in Totnes, a delightfully eclectic and eccentric town. But Ben’s place, to be honest, is rather boring.

Well this was a lovely little find and what a lovely evening. Near the top of the hill is a lovely little wine and tapas restaurant called Ben's. My dad found this place whilst visiting the Christmas market and popped in just for a glass of wine but wanted to return to try the tapas as he said it looked amazing and he was right. We called up and booked a table (advisable as the place is quite small even though they have an upstairs). We were taken upstairs to our table and given menus. We'd already spotted a particular bottle of red wine we wanted from downstairs so that was easy. Be aware they do charge a £6 corkage if you choose to go off the menu but in the grand scheme of things that's nothing. We did a little enquiring about Gluten Free and I was surprised with how much I could order that was safe, even the calamari which is mostly unheard of. The tapas came out quickly and all together. We were 2 couples and ordered 4 dishes per couple which was perfect we thought and we managed to share a little with each other. I think we picked a nice mix of dishes ranging from fish to meat and veg. The wine went perfectly with the dishes too. So much so we ordered another. Well it was in between that Christmas and new year stage when all you've had is food and wine. Why change now?The staff were lovely and friendly. They did seem to disappear near to the end of our stay however you can just pay the bill downstairs and I think they thought we were having such a lovely time they didn't want to disturb us. Probably not turning tables either. We shall definitely be back and I want to do a bit of shopping in the farm shop. That cucumber pickle was lovely.

I really do not understand why this place is geing such good reviews. The problem here is not the scope of the menu or the food, whilst not exceptional nothing really to complain about given the price. The problem I had was with the staff who really demonstrated no knowledge or even interest in their product or customer. I tried on many occasion to engage staff with questions about there product and each time was given glib answers, none ask how I was or how my day had been and when they took my board away I was simply asked had I finished and not whether I had enjoyed it.. Please do not make the excuse that you were busy as you weren't. What we have here is a perfect example of style over substance. To the owner maybe if you employed a mixture of youth with maturity rather than really purely on cheap inexperienced staff you might be able to provide your customers with a better dining experience... I will visit you again to see if things have improved.

We were recommended Bens. We weren’t disappointed. Delicious tapas. Really good offer for meat eaters, veggies and vegans alike. A nice 0% alcohol selection of beers. Friendly staff. Well definitely go back.

Friends and I were looking for new tapas venues to visit and found Ben's. Several areas in which to eat including a small rear garden area. Good selection of wines and a reasonable selection of tapas. Casual atmosphere and helpful staff. We would visit again.

we walked the whole Main Street looking for. somewhere to eat and spotted the Tapas bar. Great selection and lots of wines to choose from. really friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, not rushed at all - and we were asked if we want water, so often one has to ask.

Food, service, drinks and atmosphere all excellent. Plenty of vegetarian options, as well as meat - and enjoyed our food so much we wished we had room to order the whole menu! Had a great evening and will definitely be back.

We've been here for food and drink a few times and the wine selection is fairly good. The issue seems to be management/kitchen as you never know when they will be serving food with the kitchen sometimes simply being closed early on days and often running out of stock which has been hugely frustrating on occasion.

We had a delightful meal in the yard out the back. Very reasonable pricing and great quality tapas. We will certainly be visiting again. It’s good to see a small town getting the balance right with interesting shops and good places to eat.

My daughter was married at Totnes Guildhall, which was wonderful, and we went over the road for lunch in one of the upstairs rooms at Bens.

Called in for a quick lunch, while checking out the lovely shops in Totnes. Enjoyed it so much we came back for dinner a few days later.

As a visitor to Totnes and the area, unsure of what to do, saw the sign outside Ben’s for wine tasting and a five course meal. All lovely and relaxed. Food good but not exceptional, service was however impeccable

We popped in on a Thursday evening hoping to get a table without a booking. While one staff member was a bit hesitant to let us in, the other one was happy to accommodate. There were plenty of empty tables although not too quiet at the same time. We tried local wine which wasn't the greatest to be honest but the cider brandy cocktail was absolutely divine (I had to buy a bottle of cider brandy next day to bring home). Food was lovely. A very good experience.

Menu not too big, different to most tapas places in that there's a North African/Middle Eastern influence as well as Spanish. Some good vegetarian and vegan options. Great wines available, either those on the menu by the glass or, especially, those by the bottle that you can choose yourself + reasonable corkage if you're drinking it on the premises; not your standard supermarket/off licence wines by any means. I have discovered a wonderul, organic Bordeaux and an amazing Cigales red (North West Spain). Staff lovely, good service. Nice ambience, outdoor seating lovely when it's warm, with climbing plants and birds... A plus for Totnes.

So wet we had to duck and dive between heavy short sharp showers but Ben’s was warm and dry, our table by the first floor window facing down the hill was perfect and the tapas kept coming at just the right pace. Good mix of other customers and the WiFi quick. Good value mellow French rose in big measures.
