Stumbled upon this pub during a lovely walk. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and fresh. Everyone was raving about their meal afterwards and we were all really impressed. We had the best garlic bread we’d ever had and the eton mess was perfect. Great range of local beers and a sunny beer garden. Reasonably priced. If we lived here, we’d definitely be regulars!

Lovely pub and well refurbished. The landlord and partner have done an exceptional job making this a wonderful local pub. The food and service levels are exemplary. It proves with the right people and service the British pub is still alive and kicking but they need our support or we lose it. Please support this excellent local pub.

This pub is great for family meals or just a casual drink. I went with my family for lunch for my mums birthday. We had a drink in the beer garden and then went inside to have food. We were all very impressed with our choices. Two had the steak pie, two had the crab and one had the vegetable lasagna, and my niece had a kids meal. Very good portions and very friendly service. The two who had the crab would not stop saying how good it was! I would highly recommend for anyone as the staff are extremely friendly and make you feel very welcome. When we left the beer garden was full. It is also very child friendly (of any age) and dog friendly.

It is so fabulous to see the pub restored and bustling again. We used to live next door, and the Stags was the hub of the village. Of late, it has struggled, but it is fantastic to see it in secure, friendly hands. It brought back some lovely memories and I can't wait to make some more.

Asked if they were still serving food for the evening, a reply of yes come in was just what we were hoping for as most other local places were ram packed. We sat down at a table (with no reserved sign) ordered some drinks and started reading the menu, when we had chosen we went to order from the bar to be told "you can't sit there, it's reserved" so after asking where we were to sit "there might be somewhere outside!" Brilliant, I've just spent money on drinks after being told to come in only to find they can't actually fulfill our original request. Whilst deciding if we should actually stay (we didn't) another couple who had booked a table were having problems too - apparently they hadn't booked even though they had the ladies name who took there booking. Possibly a little observation of how busy you are and a little imagination to maybe write 'reserved' on a piece of paper may help not to waste peoples time or money in future. I can't say I will be going back anytime soon as there wasn't an apology not willing to help find a potential table.

We often come on a Sunday night to listen to the brass bands, enjoy a nice pint and a burger. However, we won't be coming again. Our last visit was an experience that I never want to repeat having been verbally abused by the landlady; not just me, my wife and friends too. The issue was easily solvable but she and a local 'frequenter' were aggressive and intimidating in the company of our children and others. My view is that if you're going to host a family event, ensure that your venue is suitable including parking. If you want to run a publican business, don't abuse the customers nor consume the profits!!

I can only echo the previous reviewer's comments having been at the pub last night in what should have been a fitting end to this year's season of Sunday Evening brass band concerts rasing money for an excellent cause. I have never seen such horrible behaviour and foul language resulting from a situation which could have either been prevented quite easily or handled in a much more professional manner. Saying "this always happens" should have been a sign to put mitigation in place surely. These kinds of events, by nature, are family affairs and the language from both locals and the landlady, whilst never publically acceptable, was most definitley inappropriate given the number of children within earshot.I have been attending/playing in this series of sunday evening concerts for many years and can quite honestly say I shall not be returning either with the band I play for or with any other band.

Whenever I come to the peak district to visit my Dad, a trip to the Barley Mow is an absolute necessity. This unique and marvellous place has more personality and warmth than any pub I know. Food is great, beer is well kept, cider selection is off the hook. The decoration and posters on the walls sing both of the histories the Barley Mow preserves and of the communities it so ably serves. Most highly recommended.
