Lovely pub, great selection of ales and food, The staff were really friendly, incredibly helpful, and the food was simply amazing, reasonably priced and perfect. Ashford is a lovely village, but its worth the visit just to eat here!!

What a find. The lovely couple who run this wonderful historic pub couldn’t have been more welcoming . The food was excellent. It was cooked to order with homemade sauces and the best ingredients. The menu catered for all tastes and had just the right amount of dishes to choose from. Prices were very reasonable and presentation of the food wonderful. My gin and tonic even came in a crystal glass. Thank you so much to the wonderful hosts.

We came here in March 2023, and loved it, and I had been looking forward to it for the entire year: we came back in April 2024, and I’m now looking forward to 2025. When we came in, Friday, two weeks ago, Casper, the manager, recognised us, and I don’t think it was fake recognition, it really was. Lovely to feel there is a place where you are in a way, just passing through, and you are remembered. The beer is good, the food is good, but the way that they do hospitality is absolutely exceptional: they really make you feel a little bit special. Can I clone you into my grim soulless southern city?

What a pleasant surprise! The Bulls Head is a lovely welcoming pub. Service excellent, food utterly delicious and we are going back tomorrow. Three of us had the beef unicorn pie with homemade chips and I had the beef brisket served on horseradish mash, all the meals were fantastic. Good selection of wines too.

We are regular Bakewell visitors and generally spend most of our visits in the town. On that day we ventured into Ashford-In-The-Water, just to have a wander and a look around the village. The Bulls Head called out to us as we ambled by, the menu looked very nice indeed. And so we strolled in and found a table, easily. It's a lovely pub in a gorgeous village. Very comfortable and homely, we loved the atmosphere of the place. The food arrived and matched the general ambience. The most delicious sea bass I've ever tasted was heartily enjoyed, while my wife had the pie and her enthusiasm for her meal matched my own. It was divine. Wonderful food. Lovely pub. Excellent service. Highly recommended.

Cosy and friendly pub but my reason for giving only 3 stars is that firstly a 10% service charge was added to the bill with no mention of this on the menu. We nearly added service on top as it was just in small print at the bottom of the bill. To be honest I don't think a pub should be adding on a service charge. Secondly, we were charged £27 for a very basic bottle of rose which was showing at £24 on the wine list and £21 on the online wine menu. We were told it had gone up but that the menu prices hadn't been altered yet! an adjustment on our bill was made but I think this is poor and that the wine would be very over priced at £27. Otherwise we had a very pleasant evening but I couldn't help feeling duped.

We stayed for a week in Ashford in the Water and The Bulls Head was our choice to kickstart our holidays as it's dog friendly and has great reviews. We usually swap pubs and restaurants to have a taste of different places during our holidays. This time however we dined in The Bulls Head throughout the entire stay as food is delicious, staff so helpful and friendly we saw no reason to look elsewhere. Our favs were Lamb Henry, Beef and Unicorn Pie and Chicken Gyros. Go for superb starters, you won't get disappointed! Wash it with great draught beers and your day is complete.

This place is the heart of the village and is very welcoming. A good selection of beers and well priced - definitely worth a visit and is dog friendly too!!

We popped into this delightful village on the spur of the moment and looked for somewhere for lunch. The Bulls Head look just right from the information on the sign outside and the look of the front of the property.. We were warmly greeted, settled straightaway with drinks and the menu. Whilst everything on the menu sounded great the Gamekeepers Pie with suet crust sounded perfect on a wet and miserable day and we were not disappointed. It was smashing and good value for the price. Although we did not need them we were given sachets of sauces with the addition of little scissors to open them with. What a brilliant idea. The staff were lovely. Would certainly eat there again.

Friendly and welcoming staff, and good real ale, but sadly not at all vegetarian friendly as claimed. The only main course veggie options were curry and synthetic meat balls, so if you can't eat curry and don't like imitation meat, as was the case for three of our party, then there is nothing. Surprisingly, our enquiry whether the chef could do us a simple alternative like an omelette got a negative response, despite the place being quiet. In my six decades as a vegetarian, this is the first time that I've ever had such a request refused. We had to make do with the (again limited choice) veggie starters or starve as the other local eateries were all either full or closed. Most disappointing.

If they're going to add a service charge to a meal it should say so on the website and menu. I don't recall a pub charging a service charge before (and I go to lots of pubs) surely better to increase prices a little than to annoy customers like this. I don't recall a service charge when I visited the Bulls Head last year (a couple of times) but maybe I paid without looking. I quite often leave tips in pubs but that's an acknowledgement of unusually good food or service not because the grasping owner decides to stick a service charge on without asking and without having delivered above expectations. That said I had no gripes about food/beer/atmosphere/service this time (but it can get very busy in summer).

Fish & chips were good, game pie was nice, Brie in bread was good ( could be improved if the bread had been pre sliced 60% down to make eating easier) Roastbeef also looked good. Unfortunately I didn't realise/ read / see this 10% service charge automatically added and therefore I left a 10% tip. Leaving nearly £60 tip for pub food and service. We visited this Sunday just gone after a visit to chatsworth house upon seeing all the amazing reviews and a member of our party visiting before. The experience from start to finish was very disappointing we were put on a small table that would normally just fit 4 people the 5 of us we squashed to the point we had to stack our drinks, cutlery and the condiments on the edge of bar where we were sat just to fit our plates on when the food arrived. The food arrived very quickly which was great however the food may be the worse roast we have had in a very long time if not ever. The flavour of everything was very tasteless to the point it tasted of nothing included the mountains of gravy that was on the plate. At no point did a member of staff ask how the food was not whilst we were eating and not when the plates were cleared which would have been very obvious as 2 of us had no more than a couple of mouthfuls and the other 3 left half there meal too.

I only write reviews if something is exceptional or really poor. Well guess what! My wife and I were really looking forward to a great meal at The Bull's Head, after all the rave reviews on Tripadvisor. It never ceases to amaze me what some people are happy with, it just makes me wonder what they eat at home! After a 35 minute drive from Chesterfield we were initially shown a table in the bar close to the bar itself, I asked if there was a quiet table and was told yes as long as were out by 7.30, we were moved to 'the snug' which had 4 or 5 tables and was cold. There was another couple in there so the landlord lit the log fire, which fizzled out soon after. My wife had chicken gyros and I had fish and chips. After a 45 minute wait the food arrived, which is fine if it's freshly cooked and worth the wait. My wife said her meal was ok but went cold quickly and my cod and chips was very poor, hardly any fish in what was nearly all batter and what there was, was grey and unappealing. More like 'minnow and chips'. Another guy came in and also had fish and chips, he kept repeating big plate of food that was. I thought quantity over quality mate. When the landlady asked if everything was alright, I said my wife's was ok but mine was very disappointing, to which she replied 'Sorry to hear that I'll pass it on to the chef'. There was no gesture of goodwill like not charging for our soft drinks or knocking a bit off the bill, just a meaningless comment. I suppose with all the bookings they were getting, the phone kept ringing for table bookings, they were not going to be bothered about one dissatisfied couple! Let's take their money and move them out, that was probably why the landlord kept checking the book and the time. Why am I wring this review at 4.30am, because I've been awake all night feeling sick and having chronic indigestion!
