Our family of three dined here during a long weekend in the Lake District. The owners and staff were warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived and we had a good discussion about the merits of the different local beers on offer- all the ones we sampled were in perfect condition. We moved to the restaurant for dinner and the excellent service continued- top quality, locally sourced food that offers something different from the norm without being overly fussy. My steak was the best I've enjoyed in a long time, a view endorsed by my generally 'difficult to please' teenage son. We rounded the evening off sitting next to a roaring fire with one of the 40 single malt whiskies on offer. Only just off the beaten track, the Three Shires in is perfectly situated for some spectacular walks too- we're already planning our next visit- highly recommended!

Lovely pub in a fairly remote location in Little Langdale (although easily accessible from Ambleside or Grasmere). Excellent food - a cut above standard pub fare - and friendly service. I had an excellent cheese soufflé followed by a venison burger. Dog friendly in one of the main rooms. Efficient but friendly service. Recommended.

A return two night stay at The Three Shires and it didn't disappoint! Such a great location with very comfortable rooms and best shower! The evening meal is really something to look forward to, although I did think the menu was a bit short on choices this time, perhaps a seasonal thing.... Breakfast is a delight, lots of choice, beautifully prepared and really sets you up for the day! I highly recommend and will definitely be back for more!

You won't go wrong staying at the Three Shires, the rooms are lovely, really well decorated and fitted out, seemingly with no expense spared. The food at both breakfast and dinner was lovely and the bar area and reception are both very cosy. The Three Shires is also perfectly situated with walks on the doorstep, we did Lingmoor Fell one day and Cathdral Caves the next and didn't need the car. I would say though that the best thing about the Three Shires are their staff, they couldn't do enough and did everything they could to accommodate us. I would definitely recommend, thankyou for a lovely stay, we'll definitely be back

One word sums up our visit. Fabulous! After a long trip from the US and a hair raising drive on the paved path to get to Three Shires Inn, we were greeted warmly by Gary who checked us in and took all our luggage to the room. Then he appeared at the bar and served us some well earned drinks. If you like cider , you definitely need to try the Somersby Cider. We skipped dinner and slept comfortably. We stayed in Old Man. Wonderful views, extremely comfortable beds, all of the people who work there were smiling, cheerful and friendly. Dinner was excellent. Do try the twice baked cheddar soufflé and the warm sun dried tomato Camembert for an appetizer. And if you don’t order a hamburger or fish and chips, well shame on you. This spectacular inn may be off the beaten path, but if you like friendly, warm service, great rooms, and delicious food, then this is the place for you. And make sure you tell Julie we said hello.

Booked in here to stay for 2 nights in July 2020 for our walking trip and we couldn’t be more impressed.Being that there has been a global pandemic it was great to see a place as rural as this take it so seriously. The bar, restaurant and hotel had all adapted very well and it didn’t feel strange or clinical. Great job! The service was excellent. Friendly and welcoming. Nice selection of local ales and a vast selection of whiskeys. To the food. Rarely have specials but the pheasant sounded so delicious and inventive in its flavours we both had it as mains and it was nothing short of astonishing . The following night we opted for the steak, which was required after walking and seeing some of the amazing scenery in the area. The steak was incredible. In my top 5 of all time. I was fortunate enough to meet the chef and have a chat. Lovely bloke who is very charismatic about his trade, ingredients and service. It’s neither pub grub nor too pretentious. The rooms were very clean, well kept and of a great standard. If you’re looking for a rural get away I couldn’t recommend this place more. Three of us went to the Three Shires for a drink after a walk on Friday late afternoon. The pub was totally empty and we were greeted by a very unwelcoming bar maid. We ordered 2 beers and a gin and tonic. The bar maid looked totally fed up and as if she couldn’t be bothered - considering the pub was empty apart from us this seemed odd. Once we ordered the drinks, I walked to the table next to the bar with our dog and after I sat down a pair of tongs from the cakes on the bar fell onto the floor. The bar maid looked at me and just said ‘oh cheers’. This seemed incredibly rude to say to a customer - I apologised in case it was me that knocked into it, but was met with total ignorance. No wonder this place is empty on a Friday afternoon. We have recently built a property in the local area and are even told by the locals who have lived in the area for generations to stay away. Will certainly not go out of our way to return to the pub unfortunately.

WOW WEE what a perfect place. We had drinks in the garden and wow we weren’t disappointed at all. The inside was clean and tidy and the menu choices were perfect and such good choices. Food looked awesome and delicious and just a pity we didn’t have time, as the food smelt so fabulous and looked well presented. So would we go again! Yes, most definitely and counting the days to eat as well and have a drink

Booked here for a meal after a wet day walking. Really delicious food, tender pink lamb, excellent ribs and the best ever Sticky Toffee Pudding. Manages to be a good pub and a nice restaurant too

We visited the Three Shires Inn whilst holidaying in the Lake District. We sat in the bar, which welcomes dogs (a huge bonus) and enjoyed our delicious pub grub. The service was great, drinks reasonably priced and food was brilliant. Perfect for a midweek meal!

I always try to stop here for lunch on a round trip from Skelwith Bridge to the Cathedral Cave in Little Langdale via Colwith Falls, returning to Skelwith via Oak Howe and the Langdale valley via Elterwater. Always a good selection of hot and cold snacks and excellent local beers

Stopped here for lunch on a walk around the Langdales. We had the soup and sandwich combination. Lovely tomato soup and excellent ham sandwiches with mustard and chutney. Tried one of the local beers - great! Sat outside to enjoy the sun, warmth and Mountain View’s>

We have eaten at this lovely pub in previous years on visits to this delightful area but our recent dinner was just top class! Our starters were tasty lamb koftas and crispy duck rolls. The venison main course was succulent, tender and beautifully presented and the Herdwick lamb equally so (served with a delicious, well-balanced salse verde). The two gentlemen Front of House were really friendly and welcoming which made for a lovely informal evening out and a great end to our holiday. We may live 250 miles away but we can't wait to come back!

We've always enjoyed a visit to this lovely old Inn. Our fell-walking routes are sometimes planned around a visit here for lunch. Our most recent visit was for dinner, three of us sat in a cosy corner of the bar next to the log fire, with a glass of one of the variety of well-kept ales. Dinner was a delight. Bubble and squeak cake, venison steak and lamb were our three choices, and we all agreed that the dishes were superbly cooked, prepared and presented, with the emphasis on taste. Portion sizes were perfect (sometimes portions in these parts portions can be overwhelming). A nice touch was when chef popped out with little top-up jugs of our sauces. Puddings were just the right portion size and melted in the mouth. An excellent dinner in this charming Lake District Inn.

Perfectly placed for our lunchtime stop, we've been here many times and the service is always warm and friendly. The stout was really gorgeous and we even managed to sit outside in the sunshine on a February day!

Half way through our walk in Little Langdale we came across the Three Shires Inn, a perfect excuse for some refreshments. A good selection of hot and cold food together with a range of alcoholic beverages. Friendly service and good value for money

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.

Visiting from south. Love this part of the world snd normally quality of produce and service good in the area. Sadly there are always exceptions to the rule and mistakingly forgot to read the reviews first. The beef and ale pie didnt have any beef or ale. I'd have needed a black and decker to cut the pastry! Sausage roll dry and heavy. Food presented nice in the window but what gets served doesnt live up to the picture. Strangely expected to clear your own table into the bin. Greggs cheap and cheerful but offers better fare than here. Will not be returning.
