Sarah welcomed us at the door warmly and guided us to the bar for a pre dinner drink of Lakes Gin & Tonic - delicious. Sarah was very helpful when talking us through the menu making excellent suggestions for the side dishes to accompany our main course. She lead us to an intimate table with a stunning view of Windermere and the hills beyond. As the sunset, Sarah's team served starters of sumptuous squid with chorizo risotto and moreish goats cheese with pear and artichoke. Next, with understated polish, Sarah presented us with our Chateaubriand. Out of this world!!!!! Despite the fact we were pleasantly sated, Sarah tempted us with puddings - Sticky toffee - life changing, Passionfruit cheesecake - divine. All in all, we had a wonderful dinner in a very special restaurant. Thank you very much to Sarah and the team. We will return!

The hotel seems very dated and in desperate need of TLC. It is operating on a skeleton staff. Holbeck Ghyll must have been very impressive in its hey day but those days have gone. Tom is very pleasant Manager but is fighting an uphill battle. Bar prices are way over the top, and evening meals are not always available. Views are wonderful, it's just very sad that standards have slipped.

We have had the most wonderful family stay here at the Holbeck Ghyll. We stayed in one of the cottages, 6 of us. Couldn’t have asked for a more friendly and accommodating stay. The staff are all lovely, the rooms were very comfortable, clean, with stunning views. And the food is delicious too! We felt so well looked after: 2 adults, 4 children and our dog! definitely want to come back.

We stayed in one of the annex buildings as we had our dog with us. The place was very clean, had a comfortable bed and had a lovely bathroom. The hotel was once a hunting lodge for Lord Lonsdale and the interior of the hotel is beautiful. It includes original woodwork and a room designed by William Morris. The grounds are lovely and the views are amazing as the hotel is halfway up the fell. We had an evening dinner in the hotel and the food and service were impeccable. My only issue was that it was not eco-friendly. The heating was on full in our accommodation when we arrived (too hot!) and I think the hot tub was on all the time. The latter is difficult to manage but why not consult guests when they arrive as to whether they want the water heated all of the time? Thanks for a lovely stay.

Dreadful dining experience. Service was inattentive and slow. The food mediocre and lukewarm. The maitre d was dishevelled (shirt half untucked). After dinner I could have set myself on fire before attracting the attention of the bar staff for a post dinner drink as I sat by the slowly self extinguishing fire. This venue may have appeared attractive thanks to a tv show several years ago however time has not been kind to the staff, the food or the decor.

Had one night stay meal and breakfast here. Room tired and cold. Heating up full but still cold. Needs work to update as sink cracked, side of bath peeling off. Mat was soiled. Evening meal not hot and very pricy. Dining room cold for breakfast. Fab they accept dogs but place has seen better days. Only one staff member on evening and at breakfast. Views from room however spectacular. Would not stay again as better places for less bucks!

Having read the mix of reviews I think they’re probably all accurate! Depending on the room you get and what you’re expectations are like, it’ll either be wonderful or just a bit of a disappointment. Mine was the latter. The initial room -Jemima Puddle Duck whilst it has an amazing view, is dated and there are too many unnecessary dirty stains which could be cleaned off quite easily. It’s not reflective of the price. However we were shown a couple of other rooms instead when we raised this and chose Tiggy Winkle (directly above JPDuck) and this was lovely. Contemporary decor, a good layout and with the incredible views of the lake. However the rooms aren’t soundproofed and with the connecting doors means hearing the neighbours appreciating each other was unavoidable! The restaurant offered some nice food although the tasting menu which we were going to choose is a diner’s choice from the menu rather than being the chef’s choice of 5 courses. This put us off so we opted for canapés and mains instead. Breakfast has a good selection cooked to order. Staff are friendly but occasionally over familiar- if you’re looking for exceptional high end service and a luxury experience this isn’t quite the hotel. The website is a bit misleading. The general manager/owner is confident, has big plans and happy to share them. Apparently there’ll be a refurbish of lots of the rooms but we should expect the price to double!

I stopped here to break a long journey and to indulge in a bit of a solo treat at the same time. Having eaten here before I knew that this place has high aspirations for its restaurant. The 75 pounds menu is a five course tasting menu. On the menu there are six items, one is bread and one is the amuses bouche. By the standard of any other restaurant that is a four, not five course tasting menu, and the courses here are small, even by tasting menu standards. That's a problem, because who ever heard of a four course tasting menu. So unless you are on a diet, or have a tiny appetite, the four course tasting menu is really not enough. So there is an optional (on top of your seventy five quid) muffin with truffle, cheese and honey course. If you still are hungry then you can go to the 100 quid menu which has more courses and the muffin is included. Then there is cheese, which is another 12 quid. Compared to say Michelin one star restaurant tasting menus, you really have to take the 100 option. So this is very expensive food which should be held to the highest of standards. Now if you look at the reviews here you have a divided room. I stand on both sides. Those who give the restaurant five stars generally talk about how well they were looked after, how the service was so good, how enjoyable the experience was. This was what made my evening a super enjoyable evening, so much that I really had to think twice about whether I should leave what is essentially a "bad" review. You see I also agree with the others posting here who suggest that the food is very disappointing. The amuses-bouche were fine but to be honest I can't remember what they were. Amuses-bouche are often amazing and innovative, but not here. After this the excellent staff did an excellent job introducing a Japanese milk bread that was really very pedestrian. The tone from the staff was that Japanese milk bread is something extraordinary and almost unique to the hotel. It was smug and self-congratulatory and this tone must come from the kitchen. I had a much better Japanese milk bread three weeks ago in Shrewsbury, made with with a garlic and miso crust which was extraordinary. This here was a nice pleasant brioche type bread with some honey glazed over it. It was fine, that's all. Butters were very good I have to say. A beetroot dish was nice enough, although the tiny, tiny portion is the sort of thing that gets fine dining a reputation for pretentiousness. Beetroot is very fashionable these days and this one did not stand out from the rest. Halibut followed and this was slightly overcooked. I know it's difficult to cook this fish but if it's slightly chewy it's no longer wonderful. The lamb was also overcooked, although the separate neck of lamb and everything else on the plate was yummy. I'm never sure of myself when something is delivered that is completely wrong. I'm not a professional chef or a food critic so I always think it's me that doesn't understand. It was chewy and the texture was unpleasant. I hadn't paid attention to the menu. Was this a cheaper cut of lamb done in an interesting way that I was failing to grasp? When the waitress asked me if I enjoyed it I wasn't rude. I said: "it was strange. What cut was that?". This was the only time I saw the service slip at this hotel. She looked panicky (as if complaints were not something she felt equipped to deal with) and replied "loin", as if that should satisfy me, and ran off. I didn't see her again. Until this moment she hadn't put a step wrong but I took this as a sign that complaints here are not seen as constructive feedback. Recovery service, the idea that a complaint is an opportunity to provide an even better customer experience, is not necessarily something that is understood. Bluntly, the main course was fatty lamb which had been thoroughly overcooked. Loin should be served pink or even rare and this had been cooked to death. It should not have left the kitchen. Then a muffin was served by someone from the kitchen (not sure if it's the chef or a sous chef): grating fresh truffle over bread and cheese and drizzling it with honey in front of you. I didn't get it. Why am I eating bread and cheese in the middle of a small tasting menu, except to fill myself up because the actual tasting menu is so tiny that something more substantial is needed? Anything with freshly grated truffle will taste nice. Truffle honey and cheese will always go together (although a strong cheese will overwhelm the truffle if you don't put exactly the right proportions in your mouth). I'm not sure what this dish is for. Maybe a hundred quid is pocket change for this place's target clientele, but for me a hundred quid took me time to earn and should be delivering exceptional innovation, something wow. This was posh filler for people who really aren't really into food but have money. Cheeses (I was hungry so I ordered this extra course) were also fine, and the crackers were delightful. I am a big fan of English cheeses but here three standard French cheeses would have knocked these three out of the park. They were bland and any flavour they did have was overwhelmed by three chutneys. Strong chutneys don't go well with delicate cheeses taken with good red wine with the exception of the goats cheese which did go particularly well with the dried apricots. The blue cheese was lost against the other chutneys though. Personally I think France sets the standard here, one which we are perfectly capable of beating and often do, where they serve cheese and bread and don't complicate it further. If you are going to add to that it needs to work. The crackers did. The chutneys didn't. But that's just my taste. I haven't mentioned the pudding, a custard tart, which was sensational. I am actually a big fan of custard tarts, whether it's the deep filled wobbly nutmegged ones in the high street shops, a Portuguese pastel de natas, or a Cantonese daan taht. This one may have been the best I have ever had. Smooth without a hint of egginess but still with a rich dense intensity, this was fabulous. And we got a decent sized slice too. The gooseberry accompaniment was a bit of a splodge, and I don't think it balanced the custard pie, but I can see that it should have. The tartness of the gooseberry was slightly astringent against the creamy sweetness of the custard, which is a grown up flavour but I couldn't make these flavours quite work together for me, but that's a small criticism. What's the point of posting critical reviews? Well here it is: the restaurant was half empty on a Friday evening in August. It may be the first hotel in the area to have got a Michelin star, but it hasn't got one now when others around have. If I stayed here again I'd eat out (probably across the moor at their neighbours). I did have a lovely evening, but that was down to super service and because I was staying in a beautiful hotel in a beautiful place. I'd love it if they listened to the TA customers who criticise the food, recognise that these are generally food lovers who spend hard earned money and have high expectations, and that we know what good is because we have eaten it, and paid for it, many times, all around the world. I'd love to come back here in the future and enjoy the fabulous hotel and the dinner in the evening.

We came to here for dinner on a Saturday night and the fact that almost the entire restaurant was empty at 8pm speaks for itself. The staff are poorly trained. The food was of very amateur quality. We paid £75pp for a 5 course tasting menu plus drinks and it was the most disappointing experience we’ve had in a long time. This is certainly not a “fine dining” restaurant. We were hoping that the other reviews on here were just exaggerating but it is very clear that the consistently negative reviews are spot on and if you choose to go anyway, then I’m afraid that’s on you.

Rocco looked after us regarding the tasting meal and the waitress was bubbly and good fun. Clearly the chef was excellent. Emma was welcoming and efficient at breakfast We would like to give Tom a special mention for his unfailingly positive attitude, friendliness and customer service. What a shambles! From the spelling on the menu “isle of right tomato’s” to the bland food to the bo of the waitress. It’s a lovely view and all that but the turbot was not seasoned and only an inch long to the chewy crab to the overcooked beef to actually a quite decent pudding. And for a bargain £75 plus service! Much better value around than here.

Went here for Christmas dinner - We had been previously in Pre-Covid days and had had a lovely time with great food and excellent service. Clearly it has now changed hands and is nothing compared to its former self. Food was aweful! advertised as a Christmas Dinner Tasting Menu at £120 per head, surely it would have been reasonable to expect quality food perhaps approaching a Fine Dining expeience? Instead we had a travesty of culinary car crashes! Two shell fish courses, Two desert courses, and a Christmas Turkey dinner main, so bad that I struggle to describe it. Meet and greet was by a very attentive and polite young man, (the only positive in the whole experience) The actual service from a scruffy older man who did not even have basic waiting skills. As if thats not bad enough they then charge a 12.5% service charge. Avoid at all cost! You have been warned.

Visited for lunch . It was a special occasion, as explained when we booked, and also had 2 bouquets delivered to the hotel. The small dining room was very cold only one log on the fire, we put two logs on ourselves from the log bucket, this was never replenished or the fire checked by the staff. We sat with our coats on, we could see other diners in the next room also had their coats and hats on. We kept closing the door, restaurant manager kept leaving the door open, which didn’t help. Disappointed with the food on the A la carte menu. I did phone to speak to the manager who fobbed me off by telling me that the log burner could only take one log at a time “really” he also said he was not aware that it was booked as a special occasion. Will certainly not visit again.

Booked a table for special celebration. We were aware that it was only the bar menu but we didn't expect the terrible food that we were served. The staff were lovely but despite trying , they were struggling with a room full of people complaining. As soon as we arrived two glasses of prosecco were presented for the bride and groom, on the house. But no one else had drinks so we could not toast. The bar prices were outrageous, higher than a London Hotel, £20 for a cocktail. The bar menu was uninspiring. The food that followed was dire. Sloppy Caesar (you have to pay extra for chicken, dry as the stale croutons), chicken burgers with inedible sauce, limp lettuce, a slab of dry chicken and old brioche buns. Chips were extra, apparently home made but tasting of rancid oil. The steak was average and the peppercorn sauce lacked peppercorns but instead had a bit of pepper taste (we refused to pay for it, as it was also extra). Soup was served without a spoon, steak without steak knife. We could not be bothered with pudding. The staff did everything to make us feel welcome but I think the problem here lies with the owners. How can you justify the quality of ingredients you serve at the prices you charge is beyond me. Nice views and all that. We spoke to the manager who defended the whole thing rather than admit that they didn't even have a chef in the kitchen. We were celebrating a wedding and we felt that we could have been warn, as we would have made other arrangements. Beware on booking this restaurant on a Monday or Tuesday.

My husband and I are in our room laughing at how bad this place is. We’ve just overheard another guest complaining that their experience was ‘horrifying’. It is a total shambles. Poor Tom is trying his best but none of the waiting staff have a clue what is going on. This place used to be absolutely incredible, we didn’t even think to check the reviews before we booked our stay. We absolutely should have.We were due to have dinner here this evening, but after our dinner in the bar last night, and breakfast that took an hour and half this morning, we have cancelled. You could just tell it would be a disaster. They need to shut, train their staff properly, employ more staff and then reopen when they are ready. They are absolutely no where near ready to be open and charging the prices they are (£38 for a very, very average bottle of red wine).

my husband and I have to agree with Suzieqfalafel there will definitely be teething problems when reopening but this place should never have reopened until they were ready - they are a long way from being ready! being in the business we know what it takes to train staff and what fine dining requires and expectations from guests - this was a disgrace and anyone dining there right now should be given food complimentary as part of the staff training. We too had the "security guard" turned waiter - not his fault may I add, management are totally to blame. Unlike Suzie we didnt have a good experience with the food - we were very disappointed and the menu certainly should be explained to guests its a little odd to read and understand exactly what each dish is - the foie gras was not as expected and served straight from the fridge, it was way too cold to have any taste. Our table was dirty and sticky, no one greeted us at the door, no one took our coats. Just very sad for a place with a Michelin rating - not deserved at all. Lets hope things get better soon.

It’s understandable that as we come out of lockdown, there will be teething problems/staff shortages etc. However, for the prices that Holbeck Ghyll charge and the standard of their food, this was absolutely unacceptable.Instead of a normal staff of approx 25, there were 4 people looking after dinner service. All of them were temps, none of them had ever had any fine dining experience. The man who served us works as a security guard, didn’t know what foie gras was and was completely lost at sea. Another server served a customer cheese with his fingers, and another sat a couple down at a filthy table without wiping it down....there were orders mixed up, some never delivered, bills calculated completely wrong and none of the finesse you expect with a restaurant of this calibre. The food we ate (we weren’t delivered everything on our tasting menu) was delicious, which made it all the more sad to see the front of house in such disarray- the chefs deserve better than this. It became funny it was so terrible. We had to tell the servers what dish was supposed to come next in the tasting menu...those who ordered wine pairings never got their wine, because the people serving had no idea what they were doing! As I said, it’s totally understandable that there will be hiccups as restaurants start to open up again, but they should never have opened up if they had to source staff for a fine dining restaurant from security guards, window cleaners etc. Being a waiter at a fine dining restaurant takes special training, and can’t be thrown together like this.I hope they sort themselves out- it’s a shame.

A disappointing afternoon tea experience. No menu provided although there are different afternoon tea options. We had to ask for a champagne, it was not offered. Undercooked scones had to be returned. A piece of random cheddar cheese in the smoked salmon sandwich. Nothing else on the plate has cheddar in it, so where did that come from? The cakes were just ok. A very minty macaroon, a red vervet bun, a passion fruit tart (wouldn’t have known it was passion fruit unless told) and a mango cheesecake (that had a soggy bottom, Mary Berry would not have been impressed!) Although we had the loveliest table in the room (in the window) the whole dining room smelt of fatty meat. Finally there were only two groups of people dining in the room and they sat us at tables side by side. I would have thought at the moment it would be prudent to seat people as far away from each other as possible. Overall a disappointing experience.

Only one stand-out bottle (a 1/2 bottle of 2010 Burgandy) was offered more as an apology for a long wait between courses. They were not however wiping down the terrace tables in-between customers... Not very nice at the best of times let alone during a pandemic. They also hadn't vacuumed the dining room. The food was overpriced, it was not a 'fine dining' experience. Our room was very tired and in need of an update. The towels were frayed and so were the curtains. The view of the lake from our room was lovely though. Continental breakfast was included and it was nice enough. Starters arrived a couple on minutes later, just as we are half way through cocktails. Lamb the least offensive. Finally the poor red was opened. Service just laughably bad. And all this for over £100 per head! A number of tables were complaining. Unfortunately the prestige we expected (having originally seen Holbeck Ghyll in 'The Trip'), was absent to quite an extreme level... a deserted lounge with overwhelmingly tired decor was the unfortunate setting for the arrival of some very meagre and rock solid cakes, that the chef must have decided resembled scones, accompanied by dollops of cream that seemed to have turned into butter whist sat waiting for a customer. We giggled through out of shock (what else can you do), but ultimately left feeling somewhat ripped off - avoid like the plague!

We had been looking forward to Sunday Lunch at The Holbeck Gyhll as on our last visit to The Lake District a couple of yours ago we had had a superb lunch with wonderful food and great service. How disappointed we were! It was like a completely different hotel. Last time we visited we were greeted at reception and treated very well, not this time! We were greeted by the receptionist and shown through to a lounge for a pre-lunch drink. Nobody had offered to take my coat but it was just aswell as it was freezing in there! The fire was already to be lit but nobody had bothered to light it and it was extremely cold. Our drinks order was taken and we were given menus, not particularly friendly or professional but hey ho. When they came to take our order I asked if there was anywhere else we could sit as it was so cold in there and he said that he would show us through to the restaurant shortly.Nobody bothered to ask if we wanted wine with our meal.We were shown through to the restaurant were it was also freezing cold, not conducive to enjoying a meal. There was no heating at all that we could see so we mentioned it to the waiter who brought a small fan heater in. The restaurant looked tired, but the carpets hadn’t been hoovered, there were no tablecloths and when we sat down we noticed the napkins were very damp and unpressed, they were quickly changed. They did the same on other tables too, why would you put wet napkins out in the first place? The starter was mediocre, the main which was Roast Beef was nice enough but barely warm. We had asked for horseradish, English mustard and extra gravy which seemed to take an eternity, we had half finished by the time they came, wouldn’t have wanted to wait as the food was cold enough as it was. The desserts were nice. We hadn’t been fazed by the £37.00 per head for lunch as we were expecting it to be the same calibre as our last visit but this meal was nowhere near worth £37.00 per head. When we went to pay we asked if the hotel had changed ownership but were told it had been the same owners for the last 10 years, so what has happened? They are clearly running on a shoestring. We feel so disappointed and completely ripped off. Service was rubbish, it was like eating in a cafe. We had planned on booking for afternoon tea during our stay but we won’t bother now. There are far nicer places to go and we shall not be returning to Holbeck Gyhll.

We had the most amazing family break over the Christmas period. As a multi generational family of 7 we were looked after to an incredibly high standard. The staff were friendly, always available and worked incredibly hard to make every single guest’s stay specials. They looked after our hard of hearing 94 year old father in a very caring way which made him feel part of everything yet always looked after. The atmosphere through the week was very special, the food great and the log fires, stunning views and gorgeous rooms were just the icing on the cake . Add to this a crisp mountain walk on your doorstep and you just can’t go wrong . We will be back.

Good amenities but pretentious and poor food. No food at all available on one lunchtime the excuse was a wedding was booked.

The service was not what you’d expect from a restaurant that charges £72/pp for a tasting menu. On arrival, we waited for a while to be offered a menu but ended up asking for it ourselves. No one offered us a drinks menu either and we had to ask for it twice. The table next to us were pouring wine themselves. Food was not much better: although the ingredients were quality, the dishes were quite bland and unimaginative. The only decent one was halibut. The decor inside is old, there are cracks on the walls and the table decoration is strange and very cheap. It’s a shame that we had such poor experience because the place has a lot of potential to be fantastic.

No apology for the excessive charge for dinner when I purchased the bed, breakfast and dinner package and what we got for our main was 2 slithers of meat and a cube of potato. To be charged a £5 surcharge on top for having for having scallops was insulting. Also pop music was playing, not low key dinner music. Canapés were a little limited beetroot with cheese and a lovely gin cured salmon. We made a mistake thinking they had not given us enough for the party and asked for more. Unfortunately the waiter spoiled the experience by stating the chef had photographed the canapés and we had had the correct amount. “Really he photographed it” surely a restaurant of this quality would simply send out some more canapés and think the customer is wrong but what the hell the Customer is right and not argue the toss

Having seen the hotel on a review recently, my wife and I decided to book the hotel for two days (bed, breakfast and dinner). Arriving on the Sunday we were very impressed by the setting and the welcome. The room was lovely, well aired on what was a very hot sunny day!. Afternoon was spent on the terrace taking in spectacular views to Windermere lake. Dinner on the first night was tasty, fresh and very well enjoyed - I would also commend the staff, great service, with just enough chat to make it feel friendly. The second day was a different story - the dining room felt cramped and far too hot, not to mention the number of flies, it felt like we spent most of the night brushing them off our food. service was none to sharp - it seemed they were short staffed. On checking out, none of the expected “did you enjoy your stay?” , just presented with our bill - must be the coldest end of a stay we have ever had. After spending over £900 for two nights, we won’t be rushing back.

We opted for the 3 course dinner menu which has reasonable choice including vegetarian . Chicken mousse and poached cod starters were both very good with good flavour and presentation . The chicken with hen of the wood and sweetcron main was light , moist and with lovely sauce and emulsions although the leeks were a little stringy . Puddings were tasty but perhaps not as finely crafted . Good selection of wines by the glass and pricing considering the environment . The staff are attentive and friendly . Overall this is quite formal dining so possibly a little outdated and less imaginative than its regional fine dining competitors , but the meal was very good

Lovely location with panoramic view of Windermere from the terrace. Staff pleasant, unobtrusive and helpful. Came for afternoon tea. I expected the presentation to have been a bit more refined - the sandwiches were a bit like doorsteps but I suppose some people like that. I would have preferred more filling, more taste and less bread. The scones were ok but the other cakes were really sweet. I thought it was expensive for what was served. The tea was extremely weak but I'm sure that had I asked the staff would have done their best to make it better. This place could be as lovely as lots of other places in the Lakes but the quality of the afternoon tea needs to improve for sure.

Went to Holbeck Ghyll on Saturday 5th of may for DBB as a surprise from my girlfriend for my birthday. We were spoiled with the weather, really hot sunshine all weekend, and we really enjoyed our private terrace attached to our room, sitting in the sun drinking a bottle of wine. But some areas of the hotel and rooms could do with a lick of paint. On the evening, I paid the £20 per person supplement to try the tasting menu. The food was excellent, but we thought the wine list was expensive. The service from the restaurant staff and staff from elsewhere in the hotel was first class. They were very polite, friendly and professional, they couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and again it was first class, and there was plenty of choice, and again we had great service. During checkout we paid a well deserved gratuity for the staff and we had one last drink sitting outside on the terrace, with tremendous views of Lake Windermere and surrounding hills. A special treat for two; we came here on a wet and windy day having booked a tasting lunch. They specially selected things to suit our dietary needs and every dish was superb. We were making up in our mind which our favourites were and...

We opted for a 10 course meal where 3 out of 10 were extremely salty to the point where it was inedible. Service was slow and inattentive. We emailed the manager to report the unpleasant experience that we had. The manager was in denial and instead of taking in criticism, he was just full of arguments. We came to the restaurant because of it's past reputation but after this trip, I don't think they can keep that reputation any longer. The changes in ownership, manager and chef have damaged its reputation massively. We won't come back as the restaurant is no longer serve food to the quality that should have come with the price tag.

We booked Holbeck Ghyll for lunch on a Wednesday during a week’s stay in the lakes as we had heard much about it (and are currently working through all the restaurants on the first series of The Trip).

Had a fantastic break at Holbeck Ghyll recently. Warm welcome with a roaring log fire and very pleasant efficient staff. Dinner was sublime with clever beautifully presented food. We had the tasting menu with matching wines. Service was friendly and professional. We stayed in the lodge which was well appointed with unforgettable lake views. Breakfast was delicious and set us up for a day walking on the fells. Look forward to our next visit.

Went for afternoon tea at £25 per person. Food was totally uninspiring. I expected more given the reputation of this hotel. Th sandwiches were small and very dull... Cheese and chutney, smoked salmon ...the scones were not good (Marks and Spencer are much better), no cream for the scones and the carrot cake was stodgy. There was a trifle in a little glass jar with lots of sponge a little bit of custard and a small topping of cream. Possibly the worst trifle I have ever had. My coffee was cold. How difficult is it to serve hot coffee? The tea cooled very quickly in the cups provided. The waitress was pleasant and helpful but all in all they need to get their act together. I expected much more than this. Not a great experience and one I don't intend to repeat.

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.
