I recently stopped by Thomas the Baker in Helmsley for some lunch after a business meeting, and I have to say, I’m disappointed. The place was packed, which is fair enough at lunchtime, so I joined the queue for the bakery to get my food. After waiting ages and finally paying for my lunch, I decided to grab some meat from the separate deli counter. The lady there handed me my order but told me I had to return and join the bakery queue again to pay for it! Despite there being an empty til point right in front of her, What should have been a quick 5-minute stop at a lovely village bakery was a 20-minute waste of time. By this point, the queue had grown to over 14 people, with just one till open and only one person doing any work while the others were wandering around. It was absolute madness, especially at lunchtime. There’s no organisation; to make matters worse, the staff seemed to be at odds with each other. It’s ridiculous to expect customers to queue up twice for different counters. They need to sort out their system and get the staff working properly.

Oh my word, the best iced fingers I've had in decades. That's all I had, but I'd definitely go there again just for them.

Went to walk in at just after 4 and followed a woman in only to be told it was closed . Now I understand that people want a early finish on a Friday but when you are a shop and you close at half past you shouldn't be telling people it's closed just because you are mopping the floor

Went here today for afters with my Mum and Dad. Great location in the heart of Helmsley town centre with friendly and professional staff, a FANTASTIC font on their shelf edge labels (reminds me of my childhood) and lovely food (I highly recommend the Pudsey Bear biscuit)! Highly recommended!! :)

This is fast becoming my 'go to' option for breakfast on the move. The sausages in the breakfast rolls are deliciously firm and meaty, and the coffee is always toasty hot. No tepid, low temperature muck thank you. Best of all, the service is always fast, flexible and friendly. Even at the height of tourist season pressure, the staff are patient, calm, friendly and helpful.

Going to Thomas's is not just about the product, it is always open with very friendly staff. Coffee stays hot for a good while with no short measures. And they are fair with prices. Product is really nice.

Not suitable for non-lovers of baked goods, but if like me you find yourself propelled in to a bakery with no idea of how you got there, prepare to battle the impulse to buy far more than you need, for research purposes of course. Deli sausage roll, yes please. Cumberland rap, don’t mind if I do. Date and walnut scones, why not. Sour dough loaf, always handy to have a loaf in, you never know when you’ll need one. Chelsea bun, I’ll just have half. All this because I fancied a beef and vegetable pastie. Oh well. All the goods on offer looked and smelt wonderful and those which we purchased and have tried thus far tasted as good as they looked. Wonderful baked goods at more than reasonable prices, utter happiness.

It's got a good selection of sandwiches, pastries, desserts etc, good how the shop exterior fits in with the surrounding buildings very subtle and looks like it has always belonged there.

A far cry from your average Thomas's. It's a Deli, a vegetable shop and has all sorts of nice bits and bobs. Well worth a check for unusual ingredients

Such good value for money. The smoked ham cheese and mango sauce was scrummy. But.......the Eccles cakes were to die for. I haven't tasted that since I was a youngster in Derby. Thank you.x

Helmsley, N. Yorks. Excellent pastries as always. Friendly staff and top produce (Curd tart, deli sausage rolls, strong cheese quiche etc. The bacon wraps are a bit 'Greggs' but if that's what you want, go there instead. I wouldn't.)

As bikers we drink a lot of coffee as we spend a lot of time being cold therefore I would class us as a pretty good judge of a good cup. Absolutely superb coffee at Thomas The Baker, really good service and I enjoyed a really nice Danish. All four of us will be back.

Bought fresh bread and chocolate and orange Danish....my husband called them a taste sensation. Lovely friendly staff and what a lovely atmosphere. Have to find an excuse to drive for one and a half hours to visit again. Yummy, lovely shop.

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!

A lovely friendly bakery, just one wee table to sit and and have a coffee and observe the comings and goings of the regulars, the holiday makers and day trippers. Bread and cakes wonderful, a lovely lady owns this place and I wish her well!

We have ordered sushi from here a number of times, and we have yet to be disappointed! The rolls, hand rolls etc are so big and delicious, you are definitely full after eating here! Don’t be discouraged by the prices, ALL the food here is worth every penny!
