This is the 3rd year we have come to The Witchery for our valentines meal, and no doubt would come more often if we didn't live so far away. The atmosphere and setting are incredible in the secret garden, so romantic. We enjoyed a delicious bottle of wine with our meal from a huge selection, our choice supported by the really helpful waiter that served us all evening. We enjoyed delicious starter's that were beautifully presented and our main courses of steak and red deer that were of the highest quality and literally melted in the mouth. Freshly prepared desert of Tiramisu and the cheese and biscuits followed to finish off what was an amazing meal. The staff couldn't be more helpful, smart or polite, even offering to arrange a taxi if needed. We have already booked for next year and would definitely recommend this venue for style and quality of food and service.

We were her for our fourth consecutive Valentine's meal, and once again it was perfect. The welcome was warm, all the staff were polite and attentive giving advice if required, and we had ample time to enjoy our time there The food was excellent. As I said to the manager during the evening, my steak was probably the best I'd ever had. We have already booked for next year.

A delicious meal in an amazing setting near the castle in the heart of Edinburgh. Kind and professional staff and an otherworldly atmosphere. Fabulous design with cherubs, ornate candlesticks, carved and painted wood, gothic touches and even a vine! Perfect for my mum’s birthday. We were made to feel welcome and special. An unforgettable experience!

After dining here in July, having such an amazing experience from start to finish, we returned during our break to Edinburgh and again had a fantastic experience. We received exceptional service from Blair who was warm and friendly, lighthearted and made us feel very comfortable. We started with a delicious cocktail and also chose a bottle of wine to go with food from their extensive list, it’s the size of a phone book! Beautiful food, we had the very reasonably priced lunch menu and shared a fantastically rich dessert of dark chocolate torte. Stunning wooden panelled dining room, candlelit and so romantic, decadent yet relaxed, it was a truly wonderful experience and we can’t wait to go back again and again!

I would have liked to give 2 reviews, just 3 stars for our meal but 5 stars for the hotel and all the lovely staff. Both our meals of 5 scallops was basically cold with hardly any real flavour. The scallops were cooked very well and the presentation was lovely but the taste was very bland. I would suggest adding garlic and ginger with the scallops on a bed of green veg, eg. spinach. The chef used kale but it was very wet and also cold. We could have sent the meals back but did't want to wait for more to be cooked nor for our meal to just be put in a microwave. We stayed there for one night and all the staff were really lovely, friendly and helpful, even the poor waiter serving our cold meal. Our room (Heriot) was amazing, where we were served breakfast in our room before we checked out. We dined in the Original dining room, which has a lovely atmosphere.

We had a lovely lunch here a few weeks back. Service is excellent and the food was fabulous. The wine list can be quite expensive but there are some relatively affordable wines available. We had a South African Pinotage from Springfontein that was superb. If you can get a seat away from the windows then that's the best choice as tourists tend to come right up to the windows to try and get a peak inside. It can be a bit unsettling.

I must start this by saying I have not visited this establishment recently (but have in the past) however on Sunday 2nd February I was walking past another establishment on York Place when I heard and witnessed a man harassing a bouncer. The reason I’m bringing this here is due to the fact I witnessed this man deliberately antagonise the bouncer, speak to him in a racist manner, and I heard him state “I work in the industry” and that he “works in the Witchery. I’m the manager” in an attempt to excuse his abhorrent behaviour to another staff member who had appeared to support their bouncer. I must say, if this is how this man speaks to another man, one that’s just doing his job, in the middle of the street? I then wonder how he treats his own staff.

We visited the restaurant for a friends birthday, the staff gave excellent service and the food was good, the only downside to the experience was the light level which was so poor you need to use your phone to read the menu and see the food when it arrived, guys I understand the lighting adds to the atmosphere but come on.

We dined here as a celebration for my birthday, and couldn’t have been made to feel more significant. Guided down the stairs into the dining room, staff members welcome you warmly and you notice the gorgeous decor. Once seated at the table, the candlelight and gentle music peacefully greet your senses. Every detail is thought of and well placed, down to the fresh rose bouquet at each table and artwork on each menu. We chose rosemary bread with salted butter, and soft crab to start - served promptly, and delicious. And for the main event: deer, which was generously portioned, delicate and indulgent. We both selected a dessert, which again were delightful, followed by a cocktail for my partner and a Cardhu 18-year-old special release for myself. We could have had the entire meal twice for it being so enjoyable. I cannot conclude my review without thanking Holly, our vibrant server, who treated us as though we were old friends, and without whom the night would not have been so special. You are a treasure, your service faultless and your dedication exceptional. If it’s a romantic dinner you desire, you need look no further than here.

Celebrating our anniversary at The Witchery was an incredible experience. The romantic candlelit ambiance and gothic charm in the secret garden made for a magical evening. My husband started with the aged Scotch beef tartare, while I enjoyed the fresh, briny Cumbrae Scottish rock oysters. For the main course, we both had the grilled 28-day aged Scotch beef fillet, which was perfectly cooked and absolutely amazing. The service was flawless, and the sommelier’s wine pairings added the perfect touch to the meal. Every moment, from the warm welcome to the final bite, was unforgettable. Had a fabulous time dining here 2 years ago and decided to return for pre Christmas lunch this year 2024.. Reservation was made easily through a phone call, a table was given in the opulent medieval original dining room which is darker than the Secret Garden dining. Staff are attentive but seemed cold. Quality of beef is good but portion is very small for the 2 persons sharing cote du boeuf charging at £110 with pathetic grilled whole onion as sides, cod was fishy even though well cooked and presented, overall a disappointment for the price charged.

The short story is that you’re paying for the ambience and it’s probably worth it if that’s something you care about. The long story is that we didn’t love the food and the service was pretty dismissive of us. We booked in for Hogmanay night (expecting fireworks, but alas). The dining room is absolutely beautiful and we were basically seated in thrones. Candlelight and cozy music completed the vibes. It feels like being in another era. We ordered a bottle of Cava, two starters, the Beef Wellington for two and a dessert. We liked the Shellfish Bisque the best out of anything. That dish is well worth it. We didn’t love the Beef Wellington as the pastry kept falling off and the meat was so tough in spots that we couldn’t cut it with our knives. The spinach and garlic mashed potatoes were fine, but kind of like food you might get at a wedding. Everything needed salt and pepper. The dessert was yummy and we enjoyed going outside to ring in the new year with our cava. However, we didn’t have a great time with the service. We’ve been to many luxury dining establishments (we’ve both worked in the industry) and this was by far the most dismissive service. None of our servers seemed particularly happy to help us and we felt like they were being kinder to other tables. This was pretty shocking to us because Scotland has some of the best service in the world in our experience. But I genuinely had more personable and nice service at the chippy the next day. We still enjoyed our time because the space is lovely and it’s a very fun place to ring in the new year, but would probably not come again unfortunately.

Came for a family dinner recently where we had cocktails, mains and dessert. Have to say the cocktails were just excellent, kudos to the bartender and the table settings were gorgeous. For the prices on the menu we all thought the food could be improved to suit the rest of decor, as is the restaurant is mostly popular for the atmosphere, which is exceptional. For example, the flavors of the mains were very one dimensional, some even needed better seasoning. Not bad, but not great. Staff were attentive and friendly. If you’re a real ‘foodie’ maybe consider other options. Otherwise it’s a very pretty place for an ok meal.

Here’s my google review I recently had the misfortune of dining at The Witchery in Edinburgh, a “posh” spot where they claim the ghosts of Scotland's past whisper in your ear... mostly about how much they regret paying over 150 quid for something that’s definitely not worth the price. Walking in, I thought I’d stumbled into a haunted castle. The decor was so gothic it looked like the set of a *Dracula* reboot—dark velvet drapes, flickering candles, and a floor so creaky it could’ve been a ride at a haunted house. I half expected the ghost of William Wallace to rise up and scream, “This is *not* the place to drop your pension!” Now, let’s talk about the food. I ordered the Beef Wellington, because why wouldn’t you when you're in Scotland and clearly have no respect for your bank account? When it arrived, the thing looked like it had been through some sort of culinary exorcism. The pastry was so overcooked, I could’ve sworn it was a piece of plywood disguised as a crust. Inside, the beef wasn’t so much tender as it was *teriyaki-flavored shoe leather*. The only thing "well-done" about it was my disbelief at how this was somehow £110. The waiter, bless his heart, was as stiff as the steak. He leaned in, all serious-like, and said, “It’s prepared with the finest Angus beef and wrapped in a delicate layer of pastry.” Aye, the finest beef, if by "finest" you mean the kind of beef that would make even a hungry cow rethink its life choices. And the bill? Let’s just say I’m still waiting for the heart attack to set in, and it’s not from the food. It was the price that nearly killed me.

To put it lightly… don’t bother. Take photos of the outside it’s better than paying £100 + for a below average meal! The beef wellington which is £110 is made of the cheapest cut of meat rump!. You wait 50 minutes for this to come and have to waste most of the meat due to how chewy it is! A highly rated restaurant and they are using the cheapest cut meat but for maximum profit. We ate lunch in the Secret Garden restaurant which is as beautiful as it looks in pictures. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, but sadly my compliments have to stop there. The menu was incredibly disappointing. I know the lunch options are more limited than dinner, but the options that are provided are shockingly not varied. If you don’t like or want fish or mushrooms, that’s 50% of the menu. Then 30% is veg only, and then 20% is red meat, (all beef bar one.) It left me with no starter options, and only 2 from the main courses. The restaurant was only 1/3 full when we ordered, but somehow it took over 50min for our only course to arrive which was shocking. People came in after us and had their starter and main before us. I was about to ask if our order had been lost when it arrived. The food was nice, but our main of lamb wellington came with mash and creamed spinach, both of which are the exact same consistency (mouth-feel) which made it feel extremely boring to eat and not worth the steep price-tag. All in all on their own these things I’d normally let slide, but stacked on top of each other I feel compelled to warn people that as beautiful as the Witchery is, it’s not perfect. So maybe double check the menu before booking. Might have to say it’s verging on being over-hyped by social media, but if they balanced their menu better I’d be tempted to give it one more try.

Just awful and pretentious. They abuse their staff by giving them no cafeteria they just rest on the tiny stairs. I have autism and did my best on a trial run but the "guy" in charge didn't give me a chance. I hear he has a bad reputation though

Just tried the restaurant. Location is funky, a mix of Harry Potter +Titanic + Irish pub vibes. Staff was very friendly. Food however is really boring and tastes blend. Overall a bit overpriced. But nice location for a drink and some pictures.

Came here for a meal, and it did not disappoint. Great location, with an ancient & mysterious feel. Small menu of traditional choices, beautifully presented and tasting amazing. Attentive but discreet staff. Huge wine list! Perfect for a special meal or romantic dinner for 2.

The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a bag of powder. Bit of a waste of my money. Ultimately paid €200 for 2 drinks and 1 Lamb Wellington to share…

Romantic restaurant in a very special setting. Staff is well trained and friendly, food well prepared and served, albeit a bit slow. Price wise it’s on the higher side as expected but overall a solid lunch and great memory for us

Had a lovely lunch at the Witchery, we opted for the light lunch menu. The pumpkin soup was absolutely divine, I didn’t want it to end. The restaurant and decor was an experience in itself, it felt very harry pottery. The service was really good, they couldn’t have done more, the noise level was very quiet but you adjust to it. I’m glad we came for a birthday lunch here

Vegans avoid! Had this place booked for months as the setting looks so beautiful, but the atmosphere was off. Felt like we weren't fancy enough to be there, and there and inside it was pretty quiet and a little awkward. My partner had a steak and loved it, but the vegan moussaka was nothing short of a slab of aubergine with some flavourless tomato sauce on top. I had hoped for 30 quid it would be a real showcase of vegan cooking, and taking simple ingredients and flavouring and layering them beautifully. It was very disappointing. Was more flavour in the bread roll. For comparison, had a meal at Makars (highly recommended) that was simply mushroom and potato, but just knew how to make it amazing, and it was half the price. A beautiful space, but unfortunately a rip off. Luckily we were sat in the smaller dining room too as when we checked in at the larger restaurant room, it had a strong smell of drains too.

Unfortunately they are unable to accommodate 10 people for dining in the restoran because maximum capacity per reservation is limited to 6 people and they do not accept reservation for two tables(5+5) or (6+4). Very disappointed!

We came here for the ‘Light lunch’ menu after we landed in Edinburgh for the start of our mini moon, and what a start it was. I had a pumpkin soup to start, followed by a mushroom risotto, they sound light but let me tell you that risotto was rich, creamy and cheesy! My partner had Parma ham/melon starter and a steak to follow. She was very full! This light lunch was great. I followed it all with a ‘Rob Roy’ cocktail which packs a punch. It’s strong, full of flavour and sweet. Thanks to all the staff during our lunch that made it so lovely.

The ambience is great. The food was rather disappointing. Three out of four meals were served lukewarm. The Price-performance ratio is not right. Not particularly tasty. SHAME....

We came to the witchery for our last day in Edinburgh to enjoy tea for lunch. I was worried that this wouldn't be enough food but oh was I wrong. Everything was excellent from the service to the ambiance to the food. Perfect way to end our trip!

Afternoon tea for a birthday celebration. Plenty staff but taking very little interest in customer. Food was nice At 130 pounds for 2 I expected some atmosphere but felt staff were just pushing in a few hours before dinner.

Initial thought The Witchery was too dark but my eyes adjusted and I realised its for effect. Staff were very courteous and friendly our waitress was lovely. The food came in a timely manner but we never felt rushed. All 3 courses were excellent and the house wine was very good. Its a bit expensive but worth it for the level of service and the quality of the food.

We went for a special dinner yesterday night. I had high hopes for this restaurant because I loved the vibe in the pictures and the experience surpassed my expectations. Friendly staff, good food, good music and nice atmosphere. Thank you again for a lovely evening.🤍

As I suffer from coeliac disease I had forewarned the restaurant when we booked and was told I wd completely catered for. Well I am afraid that was NOT the case. I was handed a menu that basically had the allergens on each item and there was next to nothing without gluten for me to eat. Considering this is a VERY EXPENSIVE place and had come well recommended online to say I am disappointed is an understatement. In the past the when I have eaten out most of the dishes can be adjusted to my needs. Here all I cd have were a few dishes and literally I was told that was it. Had I have known this there is no way I wd have booked and paid what I did when I cd have gone elsewhere with more on offer and at a more reasonable price. U asked of many of the NORMAL dishes cd be adjusted in anyway for me and was told NO. So all in all not a great experience and I shall not be recommending

I decided to have dinner at the hotel because I arrived tired and it was a pleasant surprise! I was very well attended to and the food was excellent, at a very good price! I had a starter of breaded mushrooms that were perfectly cooked and a main course of a steak cooked perfectly with peas and fries also perfectly cooked. There are good options of beer, draft beer and wine. Excellent service and cuisine!

What a terrible place to eat: cardboard plates, no wine glasses, poor selection of food; and PLASTIC plants - in The Botanic Gardens. What an aberration! And it used to be such a good restaurant. What on Earth are you doing?? Never again.

One of the best fish suppers I’ve tasted in Edinburgh! Fish was cooked to perfection. I loved it. Highly recommend
