Called on a sunday lunch. Not very busy. The room was absolutely freezing! Pointed this out to the chap who served us and he replied 'i thought that when i came in". I had beef dinner wife had turkey. Both dishes were cold. The yorkshires were clearly shop bought as was the stuffing. Same gravy on both dishes. Beef was really poor quality. Stringy and chewy. Could be a lovely pub with some time effort and money but isnt now. Food poor.

We ate a festive lunch here in December. It was our first meal here, and won’t be our last! The service was very good. The food was all excellent, beautifully cooked, none of the vegetables were over cooked. They even came round offering extra helpings of turkey and roasties. Well done to the whole team!

Had a delicious Sunday lunch. Fabulous tender beef, some of my family had other meats and were very happy. Our waiter Oscar was a lovey guy, giving friendly service, and the landlord Brett came out to say hello and welcome us. A lovely pub, tasty food and great service. I’ll be back!

I had recently visited The Willow Tree with hubby for a Sunday Lunch and enjoyed it so much that in October we had the family up from Kent to celebrate a birthday and anniversary we decided to book here, it's a lovely family run pub.Prior to the meal I had nook in advance creme brulee as we missed out before. The meal was lovely, whitbait, prawns and stilton mushrooms for starters, main was ready pork and or roast beef which everyone enjoyed followed by dessert its was just like being at home a great home cooked meal, service was great meals were hot and there was not to much, just the right amount with no waste.Advised to book in advance to avoid disappointment I have no hesitation in recommending this pub for meals we will certainly be returning

We had an evening meal twice in the pub when staying in accommodation next door. Nice, cosy interior, great, funny and helpful staff. When I asked them to hold the fries with the (delicious!) steak and ale pie, I was offered extra vegetables instead. Lots of gins to choose from, deserts to die for. Shame we live so far away...

We meet up at Willow Tree as a mid point between two couples. We had checked ahead that they were serving food. The menu is a couple of starters and basic Sunday lunch.Parking is easy enough and there is an entrance through the small galley styler garden.Staff are very welcoming on arrival and helpful. The amibiance and decor of the dinning area of the pub is excellent. Lovely rustic feel to it, with fire place in middle which may well be lit in the winter. It appeared a popular place to eat with only a couple of empty tables.Main course offered is a classic English Sunday Roast with a choice of meats.Portions are more than adequate with a nice selection of vegetables. The food was edible but not the best I have had over the years. As lunch ran on they ran out of some of the meats.I would go early to get the better cuts of meat.

We where there for 2 hours just to eat 2 courses. The service generally was slow and the food was slow. I understand it’s cooked to order, but as we were the only ones eating in the resturant we did not expect to wait 40 minutes until our starter arrived and then a further 30 minutes until our main course arrived.

I came here from the Guesthouse next door hoping I would find a steak pie on the menu. As I only encountered four customers I was a little nervous about ordering. By the end of the meal, I didn't want to leave. The food was superb (steak pie :-) the black pudding, potato cake was to die for and the customers were all very welcoming. By the end of my visit I felt like a local. Thank goodness I didn't drive into Newark. the chef, barman, brewer, man of many talents was a perfect host and I will most definitely be back.

Booking essential as Brett works on his own in the kitchen. We booked a couple of hours before going and walked the 20 steps from our room to the pub. The meals were great, the steak and stilton pie I had I thought would be too much for me to eat, it was so delicious that I ate it all, the pastry was just right, not fatty at all, much to the dismay of my husband who thought he would be finishing it off. He had the flat iron steak, which makes you think it would be a thin steak, but far from it and he throughly enjoyed his steak too. We both had a desert, banana split with homemade ginger ice cream and a baileys ice cream scoop and apple cinnamon crumble, both excellent. I only took a photo of the banana split. All in all, we thought it was excellent

Booking into the B&B; next door, we were recommended to ring and book a table for dinner. When we arrived, the pub was already quite busy (lots of visitors and local custom- always good) so we took our drinks and menus to sit in the garden area. We went in to order our food and sit at our allotted table. The young lady was very informative about the dishes on the menu and we were delighted to hear the ingredients were locally sourced, Our starters were delicious and we had a little rest before the main course, enjoying the banter in the busy bar area. The mains were just as exquisite as the starters, the burger was particularly tasty! Full to bursting we went back next door, very glad the pub was next door!

Maravilloso.

We stopped at the B&B next door to this pub, and when we arrived was advised to book in advance as it was a Bank Holiday weekend. I rang and got a table, when we arrived it was quiet, but trade soon picked up, some of the items on the menu was unavailable, but this was understandable due to it being a busy weekend, but alternatives were provided. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and didn't force an order, giving time to decide. The food, you could tell was local produce, and it tasted great. The decision was made before just to have a main, but the food looked and tasted that good, we opted for desert too! I highly recommend the apple and cinnamon crumble for desert. This place wasn't on our agenda when we came to visit Newark, but I'm so glad we came across it!

On arrival we were escorted in to the restaurant where the table had been decorated with crackers etc. There were ten of us at the table and all the meals served were piping hot and freshly cooked, plenty of vegetables and roast potatoes, and very generous portions. The waitresses were very attentive but not intrusive and always helpful. After the meal we were offered complimentary tea or coffee and mince pies. All the family had a very enjoyable evening.

The Pub is mid way between my brother and our house and its easy for both of us to get there so having had a good lunch this time last year we booked to go again. Whilst the decor is maybe a bit tired, its a friendly and homely pub and the welcome is warm. The menu is not vast, but again that's no bad thing as its easier to make a decision, my brother and I had the Mushrooms in a cream and Stilton sauce on toasted baguette then we all had Roast Beef. The beef was excellent as were the vegetables and the roast potatoes some of the best I've had. My sister in law is Gluten Free and they were happy to accommodate her, the head waitress is also a sufferer so she was very sympathetic to the requests. The Sticky Toffee pudding was delicious and the home made ice creams really good as well. I think the only disappointment was the Yorkshire Puddings which were very tasty but quite heavy!

I had a really excellent veggie meal here. It was obviously carefully designed as a specifically vegetarian dish, and not just one with the meat substituted by something else. This shows how good real veggie food can be, but so seldom is. The only problem is that, inevitably for a small restaurant, there's just the one choice available. We felt the prices were really too low for the quality of the food served, even if the level of service was no more than average. Despite the lovely food, its difficult to visit the Willow Tree too often simply because they don't manage to change the menu very frequently, which is quite a shame.

Stumbled upon this gem of a pub and WOW, the staff are so friendly and helpful. If you like beef, make your way to this paradise of beef excellence. It isn't easy to find but I can't understand why they don't have people queing out of the door. We went for Sunday lunch and had the Rib eye beef and I've never tasted beef this good, so tender it just melted in your mouth and the veg cooked to pefection. The pork was also fabulous with a nice bit of cracklin. If you like food cooked to perfection, you will love the Willow Tree. It might be a little more higher priced than the "Chain" type pubs but without a doubt, you are getting value for money. It's about 90 mins from where I live so it won't be a regular visit but this is heaven for people that love food cooked to perfection none of your pretentious "chargrill" with burnt bits and BBQ mentality.

Having lived in the area for more than a fair few years now, exploring our surroundings has become a regular event. My dad has always liked the name 'Barnby in the Willows' and said that we should try out the pub/restaurant there. Not only do they brew their own beer in the Micro Brewery, but the homemade ice cream is also a delicious surprise. We booked a few weeks back as it recommends booking in advance on their website. There is also no push to get you from your table once you have finished your meal which was good as we could not have moved that quickly. We had a couple of the appetisers whilst looking over the small but more than adequate menu. One of our group has a food allergy which we had made them aware of and we were given suitable alternatives when we were handed our menus. We had a starter, which I have to admit, the mushrooms with Stilton on toast was so delicious. The steaks were cooked to perfection, the pie was full of meat and gravy and my son had the double burger which almost defeated him. Home cooked chips are deeeeelish. The vegetables were also spot on. Not the normal over cooked mush that's been reheated in a microwave stuff here. Desserts were followed a few minutes later. I can personally vouch for the sticky toffee pudding with the homemade vanilla ice cream. It is one of the best meals we have had out in a very long time. The menu is available to look at before your visit. I do not know if there was a child's menu, but no small children were in the building. As I mentioned, it is a small but more than adequate menu. All food cooked fresh by their chef. If you can not find something you would like, then stick to McD's and make way for the foodies that like good, honest home cooked food. This is a lovely gastro pub, who brew their own beer, use local produce and make their own pudding too. What more could you want. Do we recommend : YesAdvice booking in advance : YesSuitable for young children : not really, but they may cater for them. Repeat visit : more than likely.

You really do intend to visit the Willow Tree as it you will not pass it going anywhere. It is in a quiet village at the end of a country road and as such , although we have lived in Newark for some time, we had never visited before. We arrived to be greeted warmly and had a pint of the home brewed beer which was very nice. The place was busy but not overfull and we ordered and were seated fairly promptly. We chose whitebait and chilli prawns to start which were good but not brilliant, which also describes the ribeye steaks we both had. Enjoyable but lacking any finesse. We finished with cheese and biscuits and for me a sticky toffee pud, which was good. The serving staff were all friendly and efficient.

Possibly needs better gravy and it would have benefited from warmer plates as food was only warm. For £11 you expect everything to be perfect so room for improvement. Dessert was the crumble which was wonderful. Will certainly be back as food service and setting all wonderful.

We couldn't believe it . We came across the Willow Tree by chance - my husband, sister and I were looking for somewhere to eat one bleak Sat. lunch time after a chilly walk with her dog. Here was a warm welcome, wood burning stove, home brewed and delicious beer, gluten free bread, and a welcome for the dog - all the boxes ticked and such a delightful setting. The food was perfect fantastic chips, plenty of salad tasty brie and home cured bacon. we're definitely back there .

Excellent! Lovely fresh "real" food - a rarity these days. Hoping to visit again in May 2015 on our way to Norfolk and again on our return journey.

Booked here after reading trip advisor reviews and I must say we were not disappointed. Lovely fire, very homely and clean. There was not a huge menu but that shows that the food is indeed home cooked. I had chicken breast with lovely veg cooked just right and the most amazing tasty chips. My partner had the fish and chips which too was perfect. We opted for puddings and slightly disappointed that they had been defrosted but the ice cream served with them made up for that. Would definitely recommend and we will be back

Visiting the area with my fiance and his family so looked on trip advisor for somewhere nearby and decided on the willow Tree. Our only problem is that the pub is 4.5 hours from home so we are unlikely to visit again! We arrived at 615 and hadn't read that the pub didn't open until 630 but we're welcomed in to a lovely, clean, comfortable pub with a good choice of intimate seating or in amongst everything! The food was delicious and service very friendly, we were looked after without being hounded by staff. All three courses were divine and well priced, we'd love to have a willow Tree in our home town :)

Ate here for a Sunday roast and have to say it was very good from start to finish. The welcome was friendly and informal, relaxed. Food is home cooked, big portions and tasty. Roast potatoes were cooked well and plenty of veg came out too. My husband had the beef, which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the veggie wellington which was delicious. It would have been nice to have been offered vegetarian gravy, but that's a minor point. The homemade sticky toffee pudding was also excellent, topped off with homemade vanilla icecream. I imagine we will choose the willow tree as our first choice when we want to eat out in a traditional pub. I only hope they will add one or two more vegetarian options to their standard evening menu as with only offering the one veggie dish (the wellington) it will prove a bit prohibitive for me. Wonderful experience though, hope to eat there again soon!

Staying in Willow Tree cottages next door and decided to eat here. Proved to be an excellent decision! One of the BEST Steak and Ale pie I've ever eaten! With lovely fresh veg and excellent chips! My father had Fish and Chips which was also superb while my 5yr old son polished off an excellent burger! (They don't have a specific childrens menu, but on ordering they did offer Chicken Nuggets / Fish Fingers but my son was intent on a burger!) All the food is clearly freshly cooked to order and the portions are VERY generous. Pub also does its own ale & the one we had was a very nice pint.Staff all friendly too - will definitely look to return when next in the area. Many thanks Willow Tree.

We are not regular visitors to this pub but when we do decide to go we are rewarded with an excellent meal. I had the fish, the chef came out from the kitchen whilst whisking the batter and added beer to it, beautifully cooked fish with minted peas, chips and tartar sauce. My partner had rump steak, asked for it medium rare, it was cooked just right, not many places we've eaten at have cooked steak so well. Nice atmosphere in the pub, staff very friendly and helpful. Cider is good and they brew their own beer which is good too. The Willow Tree is a hidden gem, out of the way but well worth the effort. I would like to see a bit more choice on the menu or see it varied according to season but this will not put us off going back or recommending this pub. £29.00 for a pint of beer, pint of cider and two main course meals in the restaurant. You get what you pay for and this is well worth it. Not expensive but not cheap. Quality pub.

Saturday night and the place was almost empty. Service slow but food very good. Since the hotel where we were staying in Fulbeck hadn't saved us a table, this place was a shot in the dark but it was OK

My partner and I took his 83 yr old mum to the Willow Tree today for a birthday dinner. The young ladies behind the bar who greeted us were extremely friendly, and helpful. We did mention that it was our first time at the Willow Tree, and that we had brought mum for a birthday treat. The quality of the Sunday roast was wonderful, and the food was served on hot plates. We all ordered a desert, and when the young lady brought out mums Apple and Berry crumble with custard they had put a candle in the middle and all the staff gathered round to sing happy birthday to her. What a wonderful gesture - totally unexpected and it certainly put a big smile on mums face. Thank you so much to the staff for making it a special occasion. We will return again in the not too distant future.

Things haven't changed (see a previous review) Bretts pie is still one of the best I have ever tasted! (and trust me, I have tasted a few pies in my lifetime!) Generous portions of HOME MADE chips and lovely fresh veg. Not forgetting the jug of gravy too. FAB! Great selection of beers, many brewed by Brett himself. And ALWAYS a warm welcome and a good chat. Anyone reading this must visit and see for themselves. Oh, and try the steaks, cooked to perfection every time. Will be back soon.....can't wait!

Went for an early mothers day lunch for just the three of us. Pint of Hanleys as I wasn't driving. Nice clear pale beer but flavoursome. Great starter for a classic pub Sunday lunch. Menu was not pages long meaning that what was served should be as fresh as possible.....and we were not disappointed. Quiet - we were the only ones there until dessert time but brilliant service from everyone. 2 of us had the rib eye beef. Perfectly done. Pink and as tender as I have had in a long time. 4 different veg (steamed?) Nice crunch. Carrots broccoli cabbage and cauliflower. Roast potatoes were crunchy and fluffy in the middle. I have eaten in many places and travel with work regularly and don't give out many 5 stars but this was worth it. Still full as I write this. Best of British done really well.

We called in for a drink and a meal at lunchtime on the 8th March 2014, while waiting for a call to see if our offer on a property that we had just viewed in the village had been accepted or not. The staff were very welcoming and chatty, the food was delicious and served in a very timely manner. Very relaxing pub, toilets nice and clean, pub nice and clean.Offer was accepted and now we are looking forward to moving to Barnby in the Willows and to having more meals at this very nice pub.

The beer was A* and the food was equally good - unpretentious, tasty and excellent value for money. The staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere with the chef chatting to the locals as we left. We will be aiming to return the next time we are in the area.

...tucked away in this little village off the A17, but easy to find. Ample parking and a welcoming staff were just what we needed...though, when you see the menu...my mouth was bursting with the mouth-watering delights that were so deliciously described. We had to wait and enjoy our wine but as everything is prepared individually we were not to be disappointed. The atmosphere is pub-like and is warm and inviting...will be going there again without any doubt.

Having read some of the negative reviews of this super little pub, I felt I needed to put other potential customers minds at rest. Yes, the menu isn't long, but if the food is cooked freshly then it shouldn't be! We moved to the area in March and have returned several times as we've found the experience so enjoyable. The food is delicious from the perfectly cooked cabbage to the delightful homemade ice cream - but that's the whole point! You can't beat home made food.As for the beer, it's for real ale afficianados to decide, but our friends who are beer drinkers say it's good stuff. The service is always good with polite and attentive staff. As a bonus, there is a smashing quiz night every Sunday evening. The questions really do test your "little grey cells"!! So, give the Willow Tree a try, it's really worth it.

We were in the area and having been for evening meals previously we called in for a quick lunchtime visit. We were delighted we could take our dog into the bar area with us. We were the only people in but the place has a relaxed and pleasant ambience. We both ordered steak, chips and vegetables, as always it was well cooked and very tasty. As we had limited time we couldn't be tempted by the puddings but from previous visits they are just as good as the mains, I recall a very yummy home made sticky toffee pudding! Perfect for our needs that day and they even gave our dog a couple of dog biscuits.
