Nice building and location but wow the drink prices are ridiculous. Cheaper to bus into Newark and save your bus fair on the first drink. Not sure why so premium as definitely doesn't feel that way.

This pub was round the corner from a b&b we were staying at so easy to walk to. We were made very welcome and all the staff were friendly and efficient. There was a good choice of traditional pub food, very generous portions and both meals we chose were excellent. I don’t know how they do it for the incredibly reasonable cost. I would happily recommend Chesters!

We rehearsed Brassed Off upstairs in this pubs function room which is a great space and everyone was so accommodating. On the pub side, there is a selection of real ales (limited) usual draught beers and a selection of gins. Food is home made and freshly done so piping hot. Bands, singers, pool table and there is a real fire too.

I went with a group of people for a festive lunch that was pre ordered so why it took so long to come out of the kitchen I do not know. The price was a bargain in fairness but still it would have been nice to have it in a timely manner. We waited 30 minutes for our pre ordered starters and once finished a further 30 minutes for the main course so my friend who hadn’t had a starter waited altogether an hour and 20 minutes before she had any food at all. I have to say the turkey dinner was very nice indeed. I’m not sure there is a need for 3 different types of potatoes though, roasties will do as most people like them, no need for the mash and new potatoes, there was a lot of waste. My friend had salmon which she said was horrible but my turkey was lovely. Didn’t have pud.

Went round for Sunday lunch. The meat (lamb) was plentiful and soft and tender except with your eyes shut it could easily have been beef - it simply did not taste of lamb. There was enough veg - in the traditional plain boiled-in-water style which has been acceptable for 100 years so I guess that's ok. Nothing overall to complain about - but not one of us could go home and say we'd had a really tasty lunch.

Chesters is pretty local to us being only a couple of miles away and so we thought we would give it a go as I didn't fancy any of our usual haunts. It's a pub with letting rooms and a bar food offering with a separate restaurant and is very tastefully decorated in the restaurant area. It was a bit noisy in the main bar area as it's a popular place for all ages and football was showing so we took a two seat table in the side dining area close to the conservatory and we had the place to ourselves for quite a while. Having already checked out their menu online I had decided to try out their 'home made' cottage pie which came with carrots and peas and it is hard to fault it but being the ultra critical diner that I am here are my thoughts on the meal. Oh and by the way if you like a real ale go for the Doombar, it's a cracking pint but a wee bit pricey at £3.60, I guess it would have been cheaper in the bar. It wasn't overly busy in the pub or restaurant but our food took around 25 minutes to arrive, just a wee bit longer than I was comfortable with and it arrived on cold plates. The cottage pie itself was piping hot in an oval ceramic container and was indeed home made but the veggies whilst hot initially soon cooled down very quickly. Now a couple of things were not quite right here, the cottage pie had a cheesy top (which I personally don't mind) but we were not given the option of with or without cheese. The aforementioned cheesy top was very tasty but was also very 'gloopy' it could have done with either a few seconds under a grill or a quick blast with a catering blow torch to (a) give it some colour and (b) to crist it up a wee bit. Minor points I know but relevant none the less. We were offered extra gravy half way through our meal (there was very little gravy in the cottage pie) which we declined but in retrospect should have accepted as it would have helped keep the veggies warm, lol. The young man that served us attentive and knowledgeable and the owners were too and apologised for the time it took to get the food and the cold plates when it was pointed out to them. Would I go back? Yes and fully intend to so that we can try some other dishes on the menu. Did the cons out weigh the pros? No, this is one you need to try if you haven't been before. There is free parking outside the pub and a good sized car part round the back. It has a nice atmosphere and is well decorated with plenty of room between the tables.

This was a great pub with an excellent resturant where you had to book at least 2 days in advance for weekends. We used to eat there quite often and take friends but no more. We were staying at a superb B & B just round the corner and were advised that Chesters did good pub food. We were eating early and at six o'clock it was busy, giving the appearance that it was a regular watering hole for those returning home from work. This is a pub serving good genuine pub food. My wife had scampi and chips which seemed to have a larger portion of scampi as is the norm. I had the steak and Doom Bar pie which came with a puff pastry top and no bottom ( not a pie in my book, but there are long term discussions on this subject) however there were several large chunks of meat contained therein and the lady kindly provided a spoon , when asked, so that I could enjoy the gravy. All this and a pint and a hlf of Doom Bar for £18.00 amazing value.

On a Saturday afternoon we approached the Queens Head, there was a couple of do as you Likeys stood with another couple sat on a pony and trap being loud and swearing at each other. We entered the pub and on ordering the bar maid had trouble with the barrels of each drink ordered! Then from the back came a crowd of pikeys swearing and shouting at each other and on about their sex lives. The barmaid knew them by name so they must have been regulars. Then the two we had seen standing outside came in loud abusive. We only stayed for the one drink and went off and found a pub with better clientell within

The Sunday lunch was good; cheap prices but good quality. The meat was very thin but you would expect that for £16. The restaurant wasn’t the nicest, uncomfortable and stained chairs. The service was good though and so was the sweet potato puree!
