I went to this pub last night with my wife last night. It was a very enjoyable evening. It is a very old place but beautifully kept, comfortable and clean. The locals were very friendly. We decided to eat and to summarise matters, the quality of the food was outstanding, generously proportioned and good value for money. We shared a starter the prawns in garlic and chilli, the sauce that came with it was exquisite. The staff were friendly, clearly happy with their work and informative. We would recommend it very highly. We will visit with our children and their partners next time. Splendid.

Such a quaint village and pub, an ideal location for meeting family from opposite ends of the country. The staff were very welcoming but the food was not good. The room was unheated and we were cold but thought that we would get warmed up by the hot food we were about to order. We chose three specials, all pies, all of which were, at best, lukewarm. I specifically chose the beef and red wine pie, hoping to get an additional amount of proper red wine gravy, but alas, no, the dreadful monosodium glutamate and hot water gravy spoiled the roast potatoes and peas. The potato variety was a tasteless one. My mum ate less than half of her meal and the plate wasn't cleared for 20 minutes, well after we had ordered and drunk our coffees. Nothing was offered to us as a gesture of goodwill, even though I made it clear that we hadn't been table checked for the main course. Sticky table surface and no toilet roll in both of the ladies' lavs. Surely, you should do better than this.

Me and my husband stayed for 1 night before our early flight the next morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pub was gorgeous. Very cosy and lovely atmosphere. The room ( no 7 ) was in the beautiful outside courtyard area and was perfect. It was warm, spotless clean and very comfortable. Their menu was extensive and they also had a specials menu. There was definitely something to satisfy all palettes we felt. The only downside for us was the fact we got there late and left very early. We will definitely be returning to have a longer stay to enjoy the White Lion fully.

We ventured here one Sunday for lunch. We hadn’t made a booking but luckily the restaurant wasn’t busy at all apart from a table of two so we got seated quickly. There is no children’s menu however smaller portions can be done off the main menu. Unfortunately we had to wait 50mins for our food - difficult with two young children in tow and especially when the restaurant wasn’t busy! Much needed room for improvement. There are better pubs suited to families. It’s a shame as I like this pub and have enjoyed many drinks in the bar area.

I was at the NEC all day before checking in and had to get changed quickly and get back for a dinner. I noticed a bunch of ants near the bathroom door and mentioned it to the landlord who said he would sort it. I got back late when nobody was around and found ants all over the room and on the bed. I decided I could not stay in the room so managed to shake the ants of my stuff and went to stay in the car all night! In the morning when the landlord arrived at the White Lion I explained the problem. He said this happened for a week or 10 days every year. I did point out that he should not be letting rooms out with this problem and he claimed they were not there earlier in the day but I find that hard to believe. I don’t know what staying there would be like otherwise but you can be sure I won’t be going back to find out.

A great welcome to this local pub with a secret. 2 minutes walk away is the local train station, 3 minutes down the track is Birmingham International station for the NEC or Birmingham Airport. cost us £6.30 for 2 return tickets. _ cheaper than a car and quicker. Absolutely disgusted at the way this pub has treated our family!! We needed a lunch stop over, on our way back from Cornwall on the way back home. We couldn’t park as it was to busy, so I popped into the pub to ask if we could eat. After a while we were told it was fully booked, due to a christening party. I went back to the car where we started to look at other places to eat on our phones. We couldn’t find any where, as not locals, so I popped back in and someone told us to try the Boat near by. Which we did and have a lovely meal. However 10 days later we received a parking fee of £100 for being in the car park for 22 minutes, yes that’s right 22 minutes!!! Through no fault of our own we have been treated in such a horrible way by the landlords of this pub. Do not go to this pub and fall into the same trap and Scam. Disgusting!!!

We decided to spend an overnight stay in Henley in Arden on 17th August, a place we normally just drive through on our way to Stratford. We chose the White Lion Hotel after seeing it online. Initially what swayed our choice was the opportunity to sample the food from the Stoneaged menu. On arrival we were greeted very warmly by Nigel who showed us to our room and explained how to get around and how to get in and out of the hotel. The wonderful friendly service was continued by all of the housekeeping and bar staff at lunch time. The bar exuded a lovely friendly atmosphere which made our experience all the better. On the evening we had our evening meal in the Stoneaged restaurant and the two waiting staff were very helpful attentive and very friendly. The food was of excellent quality, probably one of the best steaks we have ever eaten. Breakfast the next morning was really pleasant and relaxing with great quality produce and Maria made it all look effortless. We will definitely be going back again soon..

Ate here a couple of times while staying at the Inn. We had a few pints of real ale before eating and the beer was really good. Plenty of choice and kept properly so it tasted really good too. Great place for a pint and obviously popular with the locals. There were also a good choice of meals and from what my mates and I ate, it seemed like it was all good value and tasty. First night I had pie of the day - lovely pastry and plenty of meat in the pie, really good. Most of us had whitebait to start and that was great too, cooked to perfection and just the right amount. Second night I had half a roast chicken - it was huge ! Maybe the chickens in the area are super size because it was a struggle to eat it all even though it was moist and really tasty. Mushroom soup starter was also spot on, thick and creamy. The food was exceptional and reasonably priced too - well worth a visit.

Went with friends for a late Sunday lunch and was given the menu we all ordered from the Specials menu. We ordered a sharing platter which was excellent, however when it came to mains 3 had chips which at first glance looked like sweet potato chips, they were not good we mentioned it to the waitress and she said they were triple fried, however they were not in my opinion as they were not crisp and they were very dark. My wife wanted mash which we were told was not available with here pie, she asked for roast potatoes and got chips. The roast potatoes arrived later with an apology however the chips were still on her plate. My dish was excellent which was salmon. The deserts were all excellent, however I ordered a flat white and got basically an Americano with cold milk I explained to the waitress that wasn’t a flat white and explained what it was and I still didn’t get a flat white but a white coffee. The other concern was the very poor lighting in the car park. I do wish TripAdivsor had a Good which is my overall rating, the food was generally good and the service was a little slow, however the food was cooked to order and it was hot and the service was good. It offers good pub grub which is tasty and good value and as I am writing this I do not feel hungry and it was over 6 hours ago when we ate.

I visited with a group from my evening class for an end of term dinner. The experience was deeply disappointing as, despite everyone having pre-ordered, our meals took at least 30 minutes to arrive. Then frequent requests had to be made for water, extra cutlery, bread and other items. No staff made the usual enquiry of 'is everything alright?,' possibly because they knew it wasn't. Then, amazingly, despite having cleared the main course plates and cutlery, the staff disappeared and there was absolutely no attempt to take orders for desserts or coffees or further drinks, thus depriving the establishment of extra income. Our complaints did lead to a 10 per cent reduction in the bill, which was a minor compensation and, to be fair, the young staff were pleasant. However it was obvious that no-one was really in control. A great pity as it's a lovely old pub with a pleasant ambience.

We were staying just down the road from this pub and it was recommended to us by our hosts. What a good tip that was!! Restaurant menu in a pub. Enormous helpings - so go with a good appetite. Their HOMEMADE pies are excellent - not your average "bought in" type from pukka or the like. Home made pastry, filled to the brim with succulent meat. My hubby had the beef, mushroom & red wine variety, This was a serious pie wedge, around 3 cm thick and around 16 cm from outer edge of the crust to the centre, and the outer edge was around 12 cm wide. No I wasn't sad enough to measure it there and then - but we bought two slices to bring home and I have just measured them! I had the Mediterranean style cod and it was awesome too. So much tasty veg but I couldn't eat it all - so I asked for a doggy bag - I wasn't going to waste that. Incidentally we had the veggie sharing platter to start with, which was also awesome. We will DEFINITELY be going there again and would recommend it without hesitation.

Unfortunately we had to complain about soup which wasn't hot and a long wait for the main course one of which wasn't very good. These things do happen from time to time and as we had never had cause to complain previously we were astounded when the owner disagreed the soup wasn't hot and told us to leave and come back! We were addressed upon arrival with a very curt address of 'Name' and shown offhandedly to our room which was most probably a stable or outer carriage conversion. We were asked to give a time we would have breakfast 'Too early but the Managers can deal with that' and then she promptly disappeared. The room was tastefully decorated with a lovely updated bathroom however it was sooo dim with one light it was hard to tell - I put on my phone torch! Dinner we found out after an exhausting day was not being served ' try Beeches down the road' we eventually found Beeches Bar and Grill which was a little more complicated to find then down the road!! It turned out to be the highlight of our stay. The next morning the managers returned and our last night and breakfast were full of good conversation and wholesome pub food. The pub is beautifully presented in Hampton in Arden (really an outer village of Birmingham - a 20 min train ride) with its quaint main bar and country kitchen restaurant which served our breakfast as well. The burger beat the previous "best burger ever" (chopped sirloin in Las Vegas 20 years ago). Wonderful Cajun chicken; calamari; breaded mushrooms; fish finger sandwich; home made chips etc. A very good wine list. They use a lot of seasoning. Very friendly, idiosyncratic atmosphere. Service very friendly, but not very fast. The decor is also idiosyncratic, but also a bit tired. The dinner prices are OK for the quality of the food, and lunch was very good value. We gents had the starters of Black Pudding St Malo £6.95 (web price £5.95), Mushroom Bruschetta £6.55 (web price £6.25) which were both very nice and then had for mains the 8oz Rump Steak with chips and salad £16.95 (web price £15.95)(ordered medium to rare but cooked more medium). The ladies had the Fish and Chips with peas and tartar sauce £11.25 to which they said they enjoyed. To accompany our meals we had gin and tonic £4.75, bottle of coke £1.80, tonic water £1.75 lrg Las Pampas Shiraz-Malbec £6.20 (lovely wine that I drink at home). Overall the evening was enjoyable for the pub but we were surprised that not once during or after our meal the waitress asked if we liked it.

We went for Sunday lunch and first thing you notice is the quirky nice decor, great first impression. Then it goes downhill, the service is poor from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, no real welcome, untidy team on their phones continuously throughout the visit, feel like your continuously asking for extra drinks, sauces and cutlery without the offer from the team. The best thing about this place is the food, brilliant home made food that tasted absolutely fabulous from the spicy pepper soup to the roast beef dinner, it was amazing, it's a real shame the service lets this place down as it has so much potential with its location

This is a restaurant review, not for an overnight stay. Popular pub opposite the church in a small village with good local walks. A range of home cooked pies and croque monsieur's along with a smaller range of salads and other dishes, and a focus on main courses - one starter and no desserts. All comes with chips - again fresh cooked from whole potatoes - no 'fries, strings or other non-authentic' styles! Excellent range of beers and lagers, and friendly service.

A colleague and i dined here this evening if you can call it that. My colleague had the sea board which was ok apart from the fish goujons which were soggy and tasted like mash potato rather than fish. I had the seafood linguini. The general flavour of the dish was fine but that pasta had been over cooked so much it was like Heinz spaghetti with sausages. A sloppy gooey mess. I quickly placed it in the middle of the table waiting for the staff to do a checkback (which never happened). Then when the waitress came to take the plates she didn't say anything about the only dish I ordered still being full?? Is this the norm? The main issue was the non existent service. If the staff were not all laughing and joking they may have noticed there was a problem. No parmesan or black pepper offered with the pasta. And once my meal had come i noticed something i would rather have had on the specials board which nobody pointed us to. Lazy lazy staff

Firstly the food was late and incorrect, one plate was served 15mins after the other members of our party. We were then spoken to very rudely when we questioned the service, even accusing me of swearing at them..which I did not! When we asked for a refund I was accused of just wanting a free lunch in front of the whole restaurant. I have never been so embarrassed and insulted in my entire life. Will not be returning!

The only pub in a remarkably unspoiled village, the White Lion retains what looks like a pretty unaltered interior which is full of character. Therein lies the first problem: on a cold day, absence of any secondary doors means a blast of cold air from the outside every time the main door to either bar is opened. The restaurant doesn't suffer from this problem, so if you want to eat more comfortably choose that rather than a bar meal. Otherwise the ambience is very pleasant. On a summery day it would probably be a great place to relax over a pint.Plenty of real ales and ciders on offer, served competently. Beer appeared to vary between £3.50 and £3.80 - expensive by the standards we're used to, but possibly normal for this relatively affluent area.We opted for sandwiches from the bar menu which came complete with french fries and a salad. Again good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Service from the barman was good: from a second server without any hint of a smile or pleasantries. No back check to see if all was well. Prices were fair for what we had.Overall, better than average, but for me not at 4 stars. I hope to give the pub another chance on a warmer day or use the restaurant to get another perspective.

Another week rolls round when my son says should we go out for Sunday lunch Dad-so off we went to the above about 5 miles from where I live. Its a lovely old typical inn I used to visit 30 years before with a small cosy bar but is full if you get 20 people or more in there. However the newly decorated bar with real fire is next door and is probably three times the size.I had phoned ahead to book a table for two for 2.30 thinking it maybe a problem however when we got there there were only two other diners. We went through the Restaurant Entrance from the car park. The restaurant joins up to the open plan lounge. The polite young lady waitress was on her own.She showed us to a table in front of the till and condiments area. This wasnt suitable so sat on the opposite table. The restaurant is a bit shabby rather than shabby chic and could do with a revamp. The entrance is a real pain and the door was used by any of the punters whether they were eating or not so people would park up go through that entrance while you were eating. The waitress brought over the menus and told us what were the roasts of the day.My son had Homemade Tomato soup with rustic bread and I had the Ham Hock Terrine both delicious. We both had real beef med rare and assorted vegetables-very well cooked. We really went for it and my son had the creme brulee and myself the bread and butter pudding-a great way to finish off the meal. There are several excellent real ales but we opted for Golden Globe-very good.I did ask the young lady to tell the owners to look at the Entrance and either get signs to say Diners only to stop people wandering through right by your table and to take the table by the till away as its in a terrible position.A couple came in and took the table next to the till but could have been shown any other one but they ate their meal with the till and all the gubbins in their faces. A three course roast was 17.50 so with drinks around 45 pounds for 2 people.A nice lunch let down by the state of the furniture a wear on the floor to that damned restaurant entrance. It also looked as if there was one person working the bar /lounge one young lady in the restaurant and the owner?chef in the kitchen so would be interesting to see how they would get on with Christmas parties.

Rang pub in advance to warn that train delayed due to a track fatality. Arrived at 23.00. Shown to room, but radiator was turned off and the room and beding stone cold. Room very small, bed sheets made my skin itchy, shower very low pressure water. Room is £90 per night here. Just not worth that sort of money. Breakfast ok, evening food here normally very good but accommodation and attention to detail, regarding the manager turning heating on in rooms prior to occupancy, has on this occasion given the white lion a very average 3 stars. You can not beat the food here but accommodation is well below what £90 normally gets you.

Just come back from our stay at The White Lion. Arrived at 2.15 on a cold November Saturday. Glad to get into the warmth of the pub. We were shown to our room number 1. The room was freezing! When i asked a member of staff, i was informed the heating went on at 4 or there abouts. I think this is a little late for this time of year! We decided to walk to the packhorse bridge which was a lovely afternoon stroll. The evening continued to improve after a couple of ciders and lovely homecooked pie & chips. Too full for pud. Retired to a lovely warm room & comfy bed (a little soft for me). The room wasn't huge but quirky! Tiny little shower but perfectly adequate. Staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was very nice, too much for me. All in all a lovely night away from home. Great spot if going to NEC. A lovely old pub, just beware of the'mind your heads' & 'Mind the steps' ....there are many of these warnings througout the pub. It will be interesting to see how my partner reviews this place.

Four of us for lunch, table booked. We were the only people seated in the dining area at 2pm on a Saturday. I know why now after the quality of our lunch. One gluten free diner amongst us. We eat out at least twice a week and the majority of all local pubs and restaurants offer a Good choice of gluten free.when we asked about our choices it was by far the worst in the a five mile radius. Most eateries have at least a loaf of gluten free bread in the freezer , not this one! but I was offered a choice of the filling out of any sandwich with a salad.?? A first for us. My choices were steak and salad no dressing available omelette again salad or chicken and salad or veg. Good for anyone who wishes to eat out on a diet, but seriously people you have to be able to offer more choices than this. The boot in lapworth are proof of this and it shows in how busy they are all the time, they go out of their way to accommodate all dietary requirements. The other food ordered was not good, the fish in batter was rock hard and my husband said awful, the quiche was burnt on the top and the chips were as if they had been cooked an hour previous over cooked. Our waitress clearly was not happy when questioned about gluten free and quite offhand . We were asked after the meal if we would like coffee, but desserts were out f the question as chef had gone home. Why not have a couple of desserts prepared that can be given to customers with the need of chef preparation. Overall a very disappointing lunch, not a place we would return to. And it was just as bad as 12 months ago. The beeches will be getting our business once again.

Visited with friends on a weekday lunchtime. Limited choice menu. Ordered off the specials board. The meals were all well cooked, tasty and enjoyable and good value. Good choice of beers.Good service, friendly and welcoming. Nice pleasant surroundings. My only detrimental comment is that a fixed price lunch menu was accessible to view on the website. When booking the night before I checked with the member of staff that this menu was available. She confirmed it was. When I asked for the FP menu when we visited I was informed it had been discontinued some considerable time before. This made quite a difference to the overall cost as all the items shown on on it were those that were available at individual prices on our visit. The same fixed price menu was still accessible and viewable on the web site after our visit. If you have a website giving details of what you offer please make sure it is up to date. A minor complaint which did not mar our enjoyment of the food and surroundings.

One of the worst experience of my life!... The bed was the most uncomfortable I have seen in my life. There was a lot of noise in the room from a ventilator outside on the wall. The smell of food from the pub below inundated the room Like that wasnt enough, the shower didnt work properly. The water came either very hot or very cold and on a very very low pressure.. In the morning, the person present in the pub for breakfast was very rude, insinuating that I wanted to leave without paying even though the room was already paid.. The food was ok. But nothing special.Definitely not recommend it and I hope I will never have to see it again in my life!

Enormous portions and very nice food! Three of us met here for lunch - purely for the location that suited us. Would recommend.

We visited the white lion over the weekend and although we have usually enjoyed a lunch there and it has seemed excellent value, today we were utterly dissappointed. We ordered sandwiches, both of which were served with a very appetising looking salad but which was warm and drowned in dressing. The bread was dry and the fish finger sandwich was a very greasy battered fish, more batter than fish which had saturated the bread. We noted that all the prices had increased and although chips now come with the sandwiches, they were edible but frozen skinny fries not the homemade as before. Hopefully these comments will be taken on board as we were after a good old fashioned pub sandwich not an incredibly rich, greasy experience. Quality not quantity.

We stayed at The White Lion for two nights and found it to be warm and welcoming. Our room was away from the pub in an outside block, which was good as it was away from the pub noise, although next to the beer garden, which we didn't find to be a problem at all. The room was basic but comfortable and clean, the shower was a bit temperamental and could do with updating but all in all it was generally adequate for our needs. We ate dinner at the pub the first night - good portions, tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfast was also good, although not everything was available the second morning which was a shame. Location wise the pub was perfect - directly opposite the church and a five minute walk from the manor - the two venues we needed to get to for the wedding we were attending. The only complaint would be the noise from the very regular low aircraft flying in and out of Birmingham international airport- this is obviously beyond the pubs control, take earplugs if you like a lie in!

I was just driving around looking for somewhere to eat when I came across this little pub.We went in and ordered and around fifteen minutes later we got our meals .The pie was drenched in gravy and was still dry inside and the chips were old and chewy . The chicken from the pie was hard and the only appealing part of the meal were the peas .My wife also had a pie and found that she agreed with him .Although my wife and I did not really enjoy ourselves , my young 12 year old had the chicken club and she very much liked it along with her delicious French fries which were really yummy .Though I enjoyed my beer and the rest of the family enjoyed their drinks too .

Been going to the Manor House cafe for a long time but was very disappointed with today’s visit (06/11/2024). Whilst the food is still good they have brought in a new policy with the tea they serve. Instead of getting a pot of tea you now get a tea bag and a pot of hot water. Fair enough you might think. However when I asked why they were doing this, the answer was ‘people ask for more hot water and are therefore getting an extra cup of tea for free’. How petty and how bad for business. £1.95 is not cheap for one tea bag and a little milk. The staff should not refuse extra hot water (after all, they can’t refuse a glass of tap water) or begrudge an extra ‘free’ cup of tea to customers who are also spending a decent amount on food. I was not alone in my thoughts, several other people were making the same comments. Also, new cafes and coffee shops are opening all the time in Solihull so there is a lot more choice. The Manor House should not be alienating customers like this or they might find they will go elsewhere.
