This was our first visit and won't be the last. The pub and gardens are lovely as are all the staff; the service and food (Sunday lunch and a to die for treacle tart) were excellent. Plus very dog friendly and all of the 4 legged visitors were well behaved. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this pub to others

We booked for supper at short notice and got a table at our preferred time. This is a lovely village pub with lots of space, good service and an interesting menu which is just the right length, not too long and with enough choice, The food came at just the right interval, was well presented, tasty and the perfect portion size. Staff were efficient and friendly, absolutely nothing to say otherwise, other than we shall be back!

We visited as a family for lunch to celebrate a milestone birthday. The service was friendly, food excellent. It is so nice to see fish dishes on a pub lunchtime menu that isn’t just fish and chips! We had the special, dressed crab. My sons had pork ribs, the meat fell off the bone. Puddings - chocolate mousse and treacle tart with clotted cream, sublime. Best meal out I’ve had for a long time. Highly recommend.

This used be my favorite pub, was a regular in my early 20s so was very much looking forward to coming back. We checked the opening times on Google which said 11:30 and we arrived at 11:45 ready to meet our friend at 12:00. We entered through the public beer garden and through the wide open door with our dog. The bar lady pretty much shouted at us that they weren't open until 12:00 and, I can only assume the pub dogs, went mental and bit our dog. She told us to wait outside while it was raining. We would have found another pub but by this time we had all traveled in various directions to meet so we're committed to this venue. The food was actually very good quality, tasty and decent portions size too. Based on the initial reception received I doubt we will ever come back.

Visiting friends nearby, we decided to walk to the White Lion for an evening meal. We were slightly wary as the service in the past has been, shall we say, checkered. Good job we phoned first as they were busy and expecting a large booking for food later. They squeezed us in. Mat, there were two Mats working that night, was run off his feet behind the bar but dealt with the queue speedily and efficiently, acknowledging new customers as they arrived and when he got to us organised the drinks and showed us to our table, quite pleased that we were a bit early as that helped him with his busy evening ahead. So, to cut to the chase, the food was excellent. My wife had the risotto which she declared was the best she’d ever had, two of us had the Sole which was divine and our fourth member had the special which was lamb curry. All were delicious, the service thought the evening from both Mats was first class and the beers and wine were a perfect complement. All in all a super evening, even down to the lovely pub cat joining us as the smell of fish wafted through the restaurant. The acid test, would I go back? Most definitely.

I am amazed at the recent reviews (and others further back) with complaints about the landlord. Earlier this evening, a busy Sunday, we visited for dinner. The pub was gently heaving with a happy, relaxed atmosphere. The service we received from both staff and one of the landlords was friendly, efficient and exemplary. The food was delicious and plentiful, and my dietary requirements were dealt with brilliantly. Well priced drinks and food - and a glorious garden that we look forward to returning to explore and enjoy. Perhaps the negative reviews are for a different White Lion, not this one?!

Absolutely brilliant to see the place busy. Glad we had booked for a table of 9. The choice of non alcoholic drinks was great, not just the juices or sodas which is usual. The menu had a good selection and was very well priced. Although they were busy, the food was great and very tasteful. Once the main meal had been cleared the only problem was they didn't offer us the dessert menu, which looked delicious but I guess we had been forgotten. The staff were young and not that attentive, nor even a check to see if everything was ok. Overall would recommend.

I absolutely love this place. It is a beautiful old and quirky pub, with great staff, service and amazing food. It is our fav go to place a short drive from home. It honestly never lets us down. Just had the best Sunday lunch I have ever eaten out! Other half and I had the most tender roast beef, yorkshire puds and a grand total of 9 different veg! We finished with sticky toffee pud and treacle tart…delicious. Over the last year we have had many lunches, evening meals and Sunday roasts here and I can honestly say we have never been disappointed. Highly recommend a visit here!

This is a lovely pub with a good choice of real ales and a pretty good menu. There were 2 vegan choices and another veggie choice as well Not cheap but quality of food is excellent and good potion sizes. Despite being extremely busy the service was excellent from all the staff. We did stay overnight and rooms are tastefully decorated with lots of antiques. Was slightly let down by the breakfast as little choice especially for vegan and vegetarian. A really pretty garden as well if visiting in warmer weather.

This is now my favourite local pub as it is very, very cosy . A lovely atmosphere .Excellent roasts and overall menu . I love the witty fireplace too they do when I went there at Halloween they had the skeletons of dogs waiting for that walk that would never happen !!! Then when I returned at Christmas it was just as good . It was like the cozy nook with stockings hung . So what what a pub to have so close and I’m actually going four days later because I loved it so much. I’ve been going here over the years and in the Summer they have operas and open air eating in the garden .

What a find (when eventually we did find it), great little place, absolutely buzzing with atmosphere both inside and outside in their lovely gardens. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, we were shown to our room for the night which was so comfortable with beautiful toiletries and no expense spared when it came to hospitality tray with home made shortbread to accompany the wide range of drinks. Dinner was superb and this is definitely the place to go as it was packed out with visitors, both local and tourists. The full English breakfast was amazing, beautifully cooked and all to order so was so fresh along with being so tasty. We will definitely be back when we are in the area, we absolutely loved it.

Fabulous meal at The White Lion, Bourton. We just couldn't fault it. Service excellent, food fantastic, and a lovely atmosphere. The pub really has improved recently and we'd highly recommend it. There was an overcharge on the bill but I went back the next day and the manager was so gracious and sorted it straight away. Really impressed.

My husband booked a table here back in January as we were staying local. The pub was very attractive and had a lovely menu . The food we ordered was really delicious. Unfortunately 3/4 of the way through the meal the owners cat peeded in the corner where we were sitting. The waitress was really apologetic and said she would clean it up. The landlord then arrives with our bill and calls me a liar so the whole restaurant could hear saying the cat wouldnt do that, you could see the wet patch on the floor. I was extremely embarrassed and had to leave the pub in tears with everybody looking at me my husband paid the bill and left. What a deadful experience to end such a lovely meal in such a lovely pub. Looking back through previous reviews this is not the first time this has happened. We have cats and understand these things can happen, but calling your customer a liar who has just spent £54 in you pub ??? I certainly would never return and the landlord needs to really go back to basics and read some hospitality training books on customer service.

What a very pleasant pub! We had not visited for many years and decided to it was time to ‘give it another go’. The dining room was very pleasant, the beer was excellent and the menu, if not as cheap as many, was quite interesting.I had their home-made steak & mushroom pie, which was a good size and packed with meat. Mercifully it was a proper pie - not the oft-presented casserole with a puff-pastry lid! All the meals ordered were well cooked and well presented, though we didn’t go for the rather more expensive options of loin of lamb or hake. Overall, it was an excellent experience (apart, perhaps, from the ubiquitous piped music) though upon request it was turned down - off might have been better!

The other night my friends and I went to dinner at the White Lion. The food was wonderful and all in the party enjoyed their meals. However, there was a cat allowed to wonder the dining room, jump up on chairs at the table, and almost jumped on to our table. This seems very unhygienic to me. The cat was a real nuisance. In addition my husband is severely allergic to cats and had an asthma attack when we left the restaurant. What would have been a wonderful evening was disappointing by this cat being allowed to jump up on guests, chairs and tables.

Met a colleague here for lunch, lovely long, low stone building, small rooms, flagstone floors, fires, dogs and lots of locals of a certain age. Good pub grub in the bar, a really great place to take visitors to the UK to see a proper local still in use and thriving. No pretensions. Great.

The food was lovely. Some new takes on traditional classics and some other interesting sounding things. I went for pheasant fritters starter and vensions faggots with mash. My girlfriend, mushroom rarebit for starter and pork chop for main. If you are a normal size you probably don't need the starter as the main is huge! Good price considering the quality too. Pleasant staff also. They have gluten free options such as gluten free bread etc

The White Lion was the pub of my youth and I was stocked to visit it again last night with friends. We had a person with us who struggled to hear because of a speaker behind us. We asked if the music could be turned down or the speaker moved. The waitress offered to move us to a different table away from the speaker. The owner then can in absolutely furious. He told us we had to sit in the bar if we didn't like the table given. He continued to be exceedingly rude. We had our meal in the bar that was noisy so our friend struggled to hear. My fond memories have been crushed. A once lovely pub ruined by a truly rude man. Shame on him

Me and my friends went for a drink at the only accessible pub due to severe snow. From the moment we stepped foot in this establishment we felt unwelcome, workers and owners were very rude and seemed to be always staring at us. The straw that broke the camels back was when one of my friends put there cigarette on the table. One of the owners started shouting and swearing at us, without giving us a chance to say anything. Due to there being 6 inches of snow, it would’ve been impossible to use a ash tray. He then proceeded to take our drinks off us and kicked us out. The whole time he was using foul and offensive language. We did 1 tiny thing he didn’t agree with and felt like he was using anything as an excuse to kick us out. The only thing we possibly could’ve done wrong was that we were having a good time. Maybe it’s a no fun pub? If I could give 0 stars I would. Will NEVER return.

Went last night with family for dinner . The pub itself is a traditional country pub with a bit of a gothic twist, giant candelabras and slightly gothic vibe. Really nice.

Visited for the first time today for lunch. Arrived late, yet despite a party of 30+ having just arrived, the staff quickly found us a table and executed first class service. Food was great and the young waiter (Seb) was the most polite individual you could hope for. Highly recommended.

Went here for lunch after visiting Stourhead Gardens and House. Asked at the bar for menus and was greeted by "have you booked?" A little brusque but we were pointed to a table. After that everything else went swimmingly, the service was good, the decor was typical old English pub and the food was exceptional. My wife had ham egg and spectacular chips and I had a fish finger sandwich, although that could be described as 3 large fish fingers in batter and a bun with salad and tartare sauce and half of my wife chips (she couldn't eat them all! Terrific value, it cost me £38 for this plus drinks, dessert for one and coffees. I highly recommend this pub!

First time visit to The White Lion and will definitely return. Went for lunch and there was plenty of choice. We chose the fish ‘n’ chips and the ‘burger’ option. Both were excellent and were really well presented. About £12/£13 each.

Met a friend for lunch at this out of they way (for me) pub. First it is chocolate box pretty, the inside is trad but nice & the welcome was just right. My pal said the beer was great, I was driving, & the curry of the day was smashing. Food portions were generous & service was good. What not to like. I must return.

Not just pub grub but good quality food with an interesting menu. And the formal dining area has character and charm as well as the main pub. Great garden too on a nice day.

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch with beautiful service from the off. I phoned to say I was bringing a lady in a wheelchair and was told to come to the bar on arrival and they would open the access door to the top of the restaurant. I was able to wheel the chair straight to the table with no negotiating others and a chair had already been taken away to accommodate (a thoughtful thing to do). The disabled toilet was pointed out and very near. All the staff were extremely friendly and performed their jobs professionally. The food was piping hot and cooked beautifully. Our first visit to The White Lion Inn but we will return with a bigger party next time.

It shines like a sixpence in a sweeps earole We are blessed with many good watering holes in this part of the country but the White Lion Inn in Bourton is something special. The food is really good. You just know by the taste only the finest ingredients are used and by the presentation, that they care. I kicked off with a wild boar terrine. He might well have been wild, furious even, but by jingo he went to a much better place. My plate, and damn good it was. Then I had a steak and kidney pie that, dear reader was a real pie. A generous slice of a pie that must have been as big as a wagon wheel! Pastry on top and bottom, it came with a rich gravy, peas and big, no nonsense chips. A shear joy. Should I admit to the old fashioned Trifle? Publish and be-damned! It was fantastic, a culinary trip down memory lane. My partners in this feast started with the asparagus which both enjoyed and then hit the flat-fish. Much licking of plates from those old cosmic grannies I can tell you. Loved it. Inside this ancient hostelry its all a bit Hobbit mixed with fine dining and everything was as good as it gets. The service was superb and kindly and the cost for the evening remarkably modest.I recommend this establishment wholeheartedly.
