The White Lion in Coventry

Had booked a table for three for two adults and our young daughter on the morning of our visit. Upon arriving at the pub at 4:30, it was busy which is nice to see and we were seated. Our drinks order was taken and then the waiter came back to inform us that they had ran out of turkey, beef and the trio roast dinners. We were disappointed as we were looking forward to a lovely roast dinner. On top of that, we were also informed that there were no children’s meals left! I mean that is simply ridiculous, it is a time where families with children are taken out for a meal, but there wasn’t any left! We also over heard one of the waitress’s apologize to a table that it had already been a long wait for them. At that point we thought that was enough for us. We cancelled the drinks order and get ready to leave. I found it completely unfair that we had a booking and was failed to be informed that one, there are options on the menu that have run out. And two, that there are no children’s meals left, AFTER you have seated the customers AND taken their drinks order! We then had to find elsewhere at short notice to feed our little girl, to me this is unacceptable. What should have happened was the member of staff that seats the customer, should have one, made them aware that there are options missing on the Sunday roast menu and children’s menu and two, that there is a very long wait for food. We understand that these things happen but it’s the way it was managed that is unacceptable.

Our third visit since the renovation a couple of years ago, the first time we went the food was really lovely and fresh as expected and the service was great. The second visit we had a Sunday dinner after hearing great things and were really disappointed with the food quality, the staff weren't really equipped in dealing with the concerns raised and seemed overwhelmed. We decided to give it another go tonight and unfortunately it was disappointing again. On arrival there were two members of staff that looked overran and stressed, took a while to be seated. A number of things on the menu not available, when the food arrived all but the fries were luke warm at best. The Charcuterie pizza had one Italian ham on a Margherita base so better being renamed, the accompaniments of the lamb kebab were not as described and not fresh at all. The Belgian fries were nice and hot. One item not as described, a garlic flatbread, we queried and the member of staff said the flatbread is already cut up and just warmed up by the kitchen, didn't seem sure about anything. She did bring out a tortilla wrap instead, straight from the fridge. Waited a long time for the table to be cleared, we didn't have an opportunity to raise the concerns as the table behind us were clearly dissatisfied and staff were dealing with that. Such a nice pub, with lots of local support, so it's a shame the dining experience has been poor on 2/3 occasions. Unlikely to return after tonight.

I booked a large table last minute and they were kind enough to accommodate us even when we arrived early. We received excellent service from Chloe who went above and beyond. We were a large table but our drinks and food were all served at the same time which was great. Lovely welcoming atmosphere and I would definitely recommend.

We visited just after the new year after a hectic Christmas! We felt relaxed throughout the visit, and the food was fantastic... Myself & the wife both ordered the Fish & Chips and we're looked after by Los. The fires were roaring , it was super cozy! All round, great visit, just wish it was closer to home!

Had a lovely lasagne with chips, really good bargain on the lunchtime deal too. Shout out to the smiley and friendly Shannon who really made our evening. x

Lovely atmospheric public house with a traditional setting. The staff are always welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere provides you with a relaxing pub to go to. There is no loud and bumping music and the food is well prepared and presented.

Absolutely faultless Food was amazing worth every penny Service was excellent also could not fault. The scotch egg as a pre-starter was stunning,warm and runny. Would recommend to all.

We visited on New Year's eve. The team were short staffed but still did an incredible job looking after us and our little girl. Special mention to Shannon she ensured we had everything we needed. Food delicious and the singer was great.

Brilliant service until 9pm. Staff seemed to change. More interested in chatting in the corner and putting on lip gloss along with gushing over the singer of the night and her empty plate 🙄. Messed my order up for an Irish coffee twice and tried to call me a liar. Sad end to the night tbh.

We had a Christmas meal with friends at The White Lion in the run-up to Christmas, and it was absolutely wonderful. The pub is just bursting with charm, and it felt so special to be there during the festive season. The open fires, tasteful Christmas decorations, and cozy low ceilings really set the scene, creating that perfect, warm Christmas atmosphere that you just can’t fake. For me, it was also a bit of a trip down memory lane, as I used to work here 25 years ago. Walking through the doors brought back so many fond memories, and it’s lovely to see how the pub has kept its character while still feeling fresh and welcoming. The food was fantastic—well-cooked, hearty, and exactly what you want from a Christmas meal with friends. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the experience and making sure everything ran smoothly. The only slight downside was the parking. The car park is quite tight, so we decided to park down the road to avoid any dinks—definitely worth it to keep the car safe! All in all, it was a great evening in a pub that clearly knows how to do Christmas right. Whether you’re there for the nostalgia, the food, or just to soak up the atmosphere, The White Lion is a brilliant spot for a festive gathering. I’ll definitely be back again—hopefully a bit sooner than 25 years this time!

Really disappointing experience. We arrived at 7:30 for our booking to be told that last food orders were 7:45 due to a shortage of staff. We were then rushed through our meal, including being made to pay while we were still eating our pudding. I chatted to a team member about contacting us if this was going to be the case. We probably would have cancelled. The staff member was rude and defensive. You were happy to take our money but didn’t provide a service anywhere near acceptable. We won’t be returning!

We booked this place for about Christmas Meal and got some good recommendations but the staff were incredibly rude and they didn't seem to care whether we were there or not. They were also unhelpful when we asked questions and our table wasn't even ready properly. The food then took so long to come and when it did, it was different to how it was described on the menu and didn't taste great. The meat was dry, the mash didn't taste cooked and the sauce was way too sweet. None of the food tasted good together and there was no flavour. The atmosphere was okay, the fireplace was pretty and cosy so I think if the food and service was better, it could've been a nice place.

The food is terrible. We all got two or three courses from the festive menu. All of my vegetables were overcooked or burnt. The roast potatoes were so tough to eat!! I had a parsnip that was completely black. I don't really understand how they could see that on the plate and think it was okay to serve it. I didn't say anything to the servers but they will have seen it was the only thing on the plate when they cleared the table. I don't believe in food waste but I can't eat something burnt. The servers were very nice. The host stand was empty for a while so I asked at the bar and they just told us to wait at the host stand. We still waited about 5 minutes after that. The food took a very long time to come out, after the starters. I think overall, for the price of the meals, this place was definitely not worth it.

Great food and service. Staff were awesome and very polite. Ambience and atmosphere was brilliant. Great selection of beers on draught. Food - beef brisket sandwich and Moroccan chicken skewer were exceptionally tasty. Lovely warm interior with open fireplaces. Highly recommended.

Went for a meal with my family for the Christmas light turned on, the food was perfection - our waitress Beth was so friendly and helpful, she couldn't do enough for us! The evenings events were so good and festive, we will definitely be returning!

The meal sizes are not what they used to be as I've eaten here many times over the years. In fact, the child's portion was bigger than my adult portion, and we both had the turkey roast. Service was slow, the plate was hot, but the food was not, and they missed 3 items off our order.

This is now one of my favourite pubs. The food is excellent and the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Complimentary drink at the end of the meal was a pleasant surprise. Thank you, and see you again soon.

Perfect after a muddy morning dog walk

Visited on Saturday, what a wonderful warm, cosy, welcoming pub recommended by Olive and Rose(bridal shop). Food was excellent, quick service too. Would recommend 100%

We arrived at 4pm our table was not ready. We waited in the bar but the only free seats were around a table filled with dirty pots, which must have been there fore sometime as the family previously sitting there were shown to a table in the restaurant. It look until 17.15 for us to receive our starters for our 4pm booking. Some of the meals were substandard, and were removed from the bill. What is upsetting is that this is our local pub that has recently been refurbished and it looks lovely inside and out, however it is poorly managed, understaffed and now a place that non of the family wish to revisit. The kitchen are unable to consistently deliver meals, so it's pot luck how it will come out one visit to the next. The food was amazing opening week, after that the quality and consistency has plummeted. We really wanted the pub to be successful and supported it as long as we could. There are some lovely waiting staff, but also lots have left or are leaving as they are fed up of dealing with the complaints.

We popped in for a week night dinner to catch up with friends. Excellent service from josh and excellent tasting food. Skight problem was the restaurant smelt musty, possibly an issue with the drainage with it being old

Chloe was excellent who served us tonight, we’d had bad start to the night after a really poorly ran Bonfire Display at the Bull Butcher, where is was stupidly busy, and we left early. But when we arrived at the White Lion, Chloe and the food were excellent! Thanks for salvaging our night with two little disappointed boys!

We came here for an evening meal following appalling service at another venue that we were staying at. Although we booked at such a late time and had extra people in our party josh couldn’t have been more accommodating and kind constantly making sure we were ok. Thought it was a nice special touch the chef helping to bring some of the puddings out. Food really really nice and nice atmosphere on this restaurant. If ever back in Coventry we will come again and will recommend to friend. Thank you for your help and making our trip a good one!

Well where to start. We were excited to come and experience the updated decor etc. We decided to book with it being our 23rd wedding anniversary my meal was nice but don't know why had freeeziing cold apple sorbet with my meal. My husband's pie which was chicken was awful chicken was hard and chewy. We also had to wait nearly an hour to get our meals with no warning there was delays.

Went on a Friday evening, the pub was quite busy. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. Sadly the food was cold when finally served after a mammoth hour long wait. In fact the replacement meal was barely edible. The mushy peas for the fish and chips were replaced three times and still never got even slightly warm. A real shame that my meal was so spoiled as previously I had really enjoyed my time in the pub.

There seems to be a standard "We have a 40 minute for food" message from staff, which is actually over 1hour. This was not just our table,as we knew other people in the restaurant.

The venue was lovely, the table we were given was in a lovely spot by the fireplace. Food was fabulous, including food presentation. Everyone was very helpful and super polite. There was a little waiting time but it was very busy! We had a lovely lunch. I highly recommend this place and we will definitely return. Thank you!

We popped in for a drink and snack on a Friday night and it was surprisingly quiet. The restaurant area was ok but the rest of the pub all but deserted. The pub’s fixtures and fitting are a level above, the seats super comfy and decor smart. It was, and has been on previous visits in the cooler months, somewhat drafty. The service was ok but for a country pub, the selection of real ales was limited to only 2. We choose three of the bar snacks for £10. They were delicious and very good value although took a while to come. It should be a five star pub but I can’t quite put my finger on what was missing. That said, if it was five stars all round, getting a seat on a Friday night maybe somewhat more difficult!

We had the room at the side of the restaurant for my daughter’s 30 th birthday. The staff , especially Bailey, were fantastic. The buffet was absolutely delicious, so much food and so much verity. Definitely recommend for a small private function.

We attended on 26th September for a nice evening meal. We were not disappointed in anyway. Perfect in everyway. A lovely nice country pub with the atmosphere to match. We were served by Chloe who made us feel comfortable and very relaxed. She knew the menus, very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humour. When the food arrived it was beautiful, the steak was cooked to perfection and the double chocolate brownie....wow. Thank you all for a very pleasant night and we look forward to our return..Thanks again.

Been few times since refurbishment and was good if having skewers. This time went for Sunday lunch. Was bland and pork cut was awful. Bar staff said thats the way its sent in. Nothing changed or exchanged

Our server, Mark, was exceptional. Every time I thought 'I might want..' he was there in front of us. Definately questioning telepathy. It reminded me of the service I got when I went to a michelin star, honestly. Very attentive and unintrusive. Only lost one star for the size of the vegetarian option and cost - I think we forget that veggies are substantially less filling than meat. The portion was already small, but in comparison with my friend's meat option, priced about the same, it was quite sad. I was still hungry after the £18 (!) Aubergine Gratin. I imagine portion size is a pretty quick-fix for this place, so I really hope they just listen and make it bigger. I would come semi-regularly if they did, I probably would not come again at all if they didn't.

Thoroughly enjoyed the three course lunch menu. Food and service were excellent, from the moment we arrived until we left. The pub was well spaced out, nice decor, great outdoor area also. Would definitely recommend visiting this great pub.

We just had a lovely evening at The White Lion. Lovely relaxed cosy atmosphere, and we were so well looked after by Loryn at the bar. Our food was delicious, cooked by Sue and Tony. Would definitely recommend!!

Travelled to the UK , Coventry when we came across an offer to get 10 pounds of next visit to this pub. We signed up and hey presto a voucher appears. So wife called up and booked a table and we were in, so simple. We arrived and what a fantastic old pub with plenty of charm, large carpark out the back by a large beer garden. I loved the fact they allowed dirty wellies and paws into the pub garden area. The inside is very quaint, so old worldly that you feel you want to duck your head when you walk in so you don’t bump your head on the beams etc. We were greeted by the lovely barmaid who promptly pulled my cellar chilled real English ale, followed by a glass of wine, then off to our pre booked table and i would suggest booking it was fairly full. As you peruse the menu and allow it bring up some childhood nostalgic memories of meals, you quickly see they have been updated to modern country pub meals. Fish cakes have become smoked Haddock fish cakes with trim steamed broccoli and spinach, which is what i went for, absolutely devine, crispy outside and lush inside, full of flavour, could have been a little more generous in either size or a third one for the cost, but very nice. Wife had the Pie of the day which turned out to be Chicken and Mushroom, i did cast an eye every now and then to see if she was going to leave any as it was hearty and golden and packed with chicken and mushroom, but alas it was all devoured. Maybe next time. I opted for the Cheese plate instead of dessert (pudding over here), really the only delta, the Brie and Stilton cheeses spot on, but the other two were a little nondescript, lacked flavour or punch. Biscuits plenty full and a great variety, overall quantity was good value, just need a few better cheeses. Looking at the other dishes on the table and asking how they were, everyone loved the food, the Fillet Steak was perfect for me rare but she asked for med rare, and she said it was very nice and enjoyed it. The fish and chips were also a generous portion and again nothing was left on the plates ! Service was excellent Mark was busy but kept checking in on us to see if we needed anything else and barmaid was very polite. Recommended for a country pub treat and we will be going back again before we head back over to Oz.

I could not rate the food four starred, and the reason the £18 quids burgers never reach the standards of the price tag ! Patty was dry , I don't know if it's half cooked or some reason it was so difficult to eat the burger ! Brownies were too good ! Hot chocolate was very nice ! but the burger was a disappointment!

DISGUSTING, SHAMELESS, THIEVING BUSINESS!! Visited this local pub for the first time on the 29th July with my young child. I met a friend and an old colleague. We chose the set menu for lunch. When we went to pay I had a £10 off voucher. But the lady failed to mention that it cannot be used in conjunction with set lunch. So we were overcharged when paying the bill as the set menu would have been cheaper. I called the restaurant but was encountered with lies and rudeness. I went in to explain the situation. Instead the guy at the counter (didn’t get his name) laughed me with two other customers. This made me feel terrible and like a joke. This was definitely the first and last time we will ever visit this pub. Customer service and etiquette is 0. To laugh at a customer with other people and do it so loud is disrespectful, he should have some shame. You robbed us and not even one apology from you. You ruined our day, we shall not be coming back.

Love the White Lion BUT went along for an afternoon drink on a hot day, put off from going in the garden due to loud music being played over the speaker. Horrible. So went to the Red Lion instead where it was nice and peaceful. The advantages are 1. You can hear your conversation 2. You can hear the sounds of nature 3. You don't have to tolerate some second rate "music" harmful to your ears. Seems lots of places play music these days, shame.

Went for Sunday lunch with my Wife and dog. The bar restaurant is dog friendly. The trio of roasts was very good. As was the Lamb rump. The drinks were good quality. Not the cheapest around, but would recommend, as you get what you pay for. We will return very soon.

Especially Shannon who served us and thank you to Chef Sam, our food was delicious and very well presented, especially the signature beef burger; best ever, would definitely recommend and be returning.

Disabled access was poor we found the food tasteless and over priced and the choices were poor won't be going back.

Food is OK. Service is extremely slow. Would not come here unless you don't mind a long wait for everything! The staff also don't like yo clear your plates from your table once you have finished eating. Not sure why the service was so slack this time. The waitress we had last time was extremely helpful with excellent customer service

Went into this pub that is local to me. Was busy for a Thursday. Election night so maybe a reason people were out. Found a table, dog friendly. Lox at the bar was polite, helpful and welcoming. Ordered wine and given a cooler. Later needed water for the dog. This was no problem for Loz to sort even though was busy. Been in past and place wasn’t great. Have it a chance again and would say enjoyed the evening. Well done.

Overall our main meal was really poor. The food had clearly been sitting under heat lamps for quite some time as the lamb, prawn and chicken skewers were chewy and dry. It is also absurd to be charging £18.50 for one skewer and a small bowl of chips. We also had 2 sharing platters for starters which were really good and our waiter was excellent and very accommodating for the issues we faced with our main meal so the service deserves 5 stars. Overall I wouldn’t return, I think they had too many people booked in and too little staff to cope which led to lots of issues with the main meal, it is also really expensive for what you are actually getting.

Visited late afternoon for Sunday lunch. The service, quantity and quality of the food was very good. However it was served just warm on lukewarm plates. Plenty of gravy but again only warm and not piping hot to help the food. So within 10 minutes of receiving the dinner, it was all cold. Found this disappointing as it tasted really good and at £21.25 each for the trio of meats and the Lamb it should of been hot.

We had a party of family and friends yesterday in a side room at this venue in celebration of my sister’s birthday and we had a great experience. The food was delicious and the service excellent. Despite being full of diners we could not fault the friendly and attentive service and the generous portions of delicious food. Our thanks to manager and all for such a great experience. Well done!!

We popped in yesterday for a quick lunch, but stayed for drinks and 3 courses! We sat in the bar with the dog, which was cosy and quiet. The food was lovely, and the staff were charming and efficient. They also had blankets for you dogs. The arancini and pavlova are particular good. Really great vegetarian options too!

Disappointed came here last time and it was nice other than the fact that they forgot our carrots on the Sunday roast and tried to tell us they don’t do them on the roasts. I came today for the second time and the roast potatoes were rock hard our food came out before the drinks so we didn’t get time to drink before the food which should be common sense. Staff lady seemed like she didn’t want to do her job and laughed at me when I asked her for something. Sort it out £18 for a roast dinner I don’t expect rock hard roasties food was also luke warm and Mac and cheese was vile too garlicky cauli flower cheese was dry with no cheese sauce just dry cauliflower.
