An unmissable spot for real ale drinkers in the area who want the more traditional pub experience of good company, good surroundings & good beer. Fullers ESB & London Pride are 2 of the 3 regulars & are always spot on. Dark Star's Hop Head makes up the 3rd & there's also a couple of guest pumps in circulation. The landlord & customers are always friendly and the pub itself is beautiful & full of character (mind your head) with a split bar & a large upstairs area.

Had the beef brisket and ale pie with mash and peas. It was a proper pie, surrounded by melt in the mouth pastry - not your usual puff pastry topped stew in a boiling hot dish which I tend to avoid. My husband had the burger and fries which he enjoyed - I stole a few fries, which were very tasty. Proper pub food.

A REAL PUB Hidden gem and hard to come by. The new landlord has really brought back tradition to a traditional pub. It looks like a tiny pub but a large upstairs with darts and another bar. Also has secret hidden garden out back for us old smokers.

Superb pub for both beer and conversations. My parents used to go there in 50s and 60s (myself miss in late 80s) when it was ran by Connie, a tiny lady if I remember correctly basically a couple of barrels in her front room. Updated now, of course, but empathically so. Still a great pleasure to visit as a pub in itself as well as my personal nostalgia!

100% recommend this pub. We recently held a 50th birthday in the private upstairs rooms here. We had the best night. The pub has so much charm and character - it made our party feel special and unique. Huge shout-out to David, the Landlord, who went above and beyond to provide a great spread of food and helped us make the party such a fun night. He was so accommodating and easy going - he basically let us have whatever we wanted and nothing was too much trouble. Overall, we had the best night, and I highly recommend the White Horse for any special occasion - it's a gem.

This seems like a really nice pub. The food was good. But sadly my first trip there was disappointing, despite us having pre booked the table 2 months in advance and requesting a high chair on booking we were not given one. This meant that my 1 year old had to sit on laps and walk around the pub during the whole meal. It made it very difficult for my husband and I to eat our meal. I was shocked that they had so few high chairs and I felt really quite disappointed that my child was not treated like a person and was unable to be given a seat for our meal out. Not a family friendly pub unfortunately. Buy some more high chairs and be welcoming to those with little ones.

Went in on Friday night. Candles and low lighting gave what is an ancient, very interesting and quirky pub, a great atmosphere. It was busy in both bars. My pint ( London pride) was first class. No loud music no TVs no gimmicks. Just good beer and good conversation. This pub so deserves to be busy every night. The hosts seem to care about the pub it’s beer and customers. I fully recommend it.

This is a wonderful old pub, with so many original features. Tony was so incredibly accommodating for our party of approx 16 for Saturday lunch. The upstairs was brilliant - we want another excuse now to come back and host a drinks session up there without the kids! In hindsight, we should have asked for the fire to be on as upstairs was a little on the chilly side. The food was good and the drinks well priced, we were a very happy group and all loved the pub! I've lived in Hertford for nearly 4 years having previously lived in West London. I was delighted to learn when out for an impromptu pub crawl with at the weekend that there was a Fullers' pub and so we went to the White Horse. It's a lively cost little pub where we could not have been made more welcome. We stayed for just the one pint of London Pride, but we'll be back for sure. I understand they do a cracking Sunday lunch and saw it priced at £10.95 which is a great price. Look forward to going back.

Most enjoyable meal recommended by friends who have moved to the area. Our 3 mile walk gave us an appetite and we were ready for a nice meal. There were 3 non meat eaters so with a small menu were pleased with the choice. There was only 1 veggie option left on the tapas board but we enjoyed the vegetable gyoza’s, the fish cakes ( a little rubbery)and pork balls 3 for £10-they had run out of spring rolls. We had the yellow vegetable curry , the tofu pad krapow , the vegetable stir fry and beef massaman plus a spicy salad. They were served in intervals but as there was just mark serving not surprising and everything remained hot.We were warned that they could be spicy based on their previous experience but found everything to be delicious, not too spicy at all, fresh tasting and despite a couple of the veggie dishes comprising the same veggies all dishes tasted different, light and most enjoyable- good portions , so everyone had a chance for seconds ! Compliments to Annie the chef - Marks wife A good choice of beers meant a thoroughly pleasant evening with good friend , walked off by our 3 mile walk home

The white horse is a must visit place in Hertford, a traditional pub complete with original features such as the giant fire place and crooked stairs. We are always welcomed by the landlord Mark who is quiet but friendly and always offers our dog a bowl of water. We came here for the Thai tapas as we were hungry but didn’t want a full meal, and we weren’t disappointed. We had three tapas for £10 (one is £4) vegetable gyoza, pork belly and pork dim sum. Absolutely delicious they were! The pork belly deserves a special shout out as it just melted in your mouth, it was perfect. In fact it was all so delicious we ordered more, and figured we may as well have another three tapas to get the offer! This time we had fish cakes, dim sum and pork belly again as it was divine! A lovely meal and I would highly recommend to anyone.

There are no gimmicks here. This pub feels like a pub, with the character of the building allowed to speak for itself. The term Dickensian comes to mind. This review is based on three visits made on consecutive weeks, by my mate and me after a day’s fishing locally. Beer and cider are good quality and intelligently chosen, although perhaps not the most competitively priced. The food - Thai dishes or Pie dishes - is a revelation! It’s obvious that the proprietor(s) care deeply about what they are serving, and rather than trotting out the usual pub menu, they offer a comparatively short selection of authentic dishes cooked freshly (and I mean cooked freshly) to order, and which are a delight to eat. We tried several and enjoyed everything. Priced reasonably, without frills, but packed with real taste. The Thai green chicken is the best I’ve ever had, anywhere. This approach to catering is as welcome as it is unusual, and we’ll certainly be back for more.

Lived in Hertford a few years now, kept meaning to pop in, I am all for supporting local REAL pubs with character, This being prompted to do a “Recce” for a visit by 2 couples from Germany visiting Hertford next month for 3 weeks and wanted to make a typical old English pub their “temporary” local while staying here, Ordered a bottle of SAN Miguel (the smallest bottle SAN Miguel arrived on the bar with a polite but prompt.....that will be £4.00 please, (not even half a pint)Maybe I will tell our German friends that Wetherspoons is an old English tradition that looks after customers instead of ripping them off, well they have certainly lost my trade, get your act together Fullers, stop putting profit as your ONLY priority as it will come back and bite you in the proverbial. And yes, you do have a “real fire”, so does the bar that my wife and I frequent in the lovely Pyrenees and that charges 1 Euro 20 for a Bottle of Peroni.I will Not be going back and certainly will not take our “European” friends in there any time soon for fear of them thinking they are ALSO getting ripped off.....Dusgusting

We were looking for a pub able to accommodate a large group at short notice: a 40th birthday party with 30-odd people. The landlord Mark was extremely helpful with our request: he allowed us to book out the top floor, and he laid on an extensive and delicious buffet of thai food (green curry, fishcakes etc), english pub grub (pies, mash and veg) and a selection for the children (pizzas, fish fingers etc). The price was extremely reasonable, and the food was laid out (and replenished) with a minimum of fuss. Tasty drinks from the pub downstairs, and a really nice ambience. Not sure where to begin, suffice to say we had a very SURREAL experience at this place. I will start by saying that my friend and I regularly work as Mystery Shoppers in restaurants (we weren't doing so today) but we do know exactly what to expect from both the food and the hospitality aspects. My friend ordered a chicken salad, and I ordered 10 of their wonder wings. Please bear in mind that we were ALONE in this pub for the duration of our meal. After 35 minutes, I am approached to be told that they only have six wings prepped, but that they could make up the rest with chicken chunks...(I agreed to this) Why does it take 35 minutes to work out you don't have the number of wings requested in the order, especially when it is their ONLY order? When my friend's salad arrives, it was lacking a fair few of the ingredients described in the menu. (Crunchy garlic onions replaced by raw onions that my friend could not have, no parmesan cheese, no dressing, etc. We had to order mayo on the side to make it palatable) But the worse was still to come!! After explaining our disappointment about the various issues and asking whether their would be some form of gesture of goodwill and being told 'no' as we 'really' hadn't any issues...we entered into the most surreal situation... Without going into huge detail because it would take far too long, the manager/landlord, after agreeing that they should have told us about the lack of wings available right at the start, proceeded to DENY saying so just 5 minutes later! IT WAS UNREAL. On top of that, he would not let me talk, saying he would keep talking over me for as long as it was necessary and doing so in the rudest manner imaginable. Even having the nerve of calling me arrogant! Needless to say, this gentleman is definitely in the wrong trade. At this point, and after trying to get some sense out of him and the evolving situation, I said that my next port of call would be social media. In a spooky set of circumstances, their card-machine stopped working and wouldn't take our payment... Suddenly, we were told to leave without paying for the food (right gesture, too late) and never to come back. The irony of that!! I would strongly recommend that you give your business to any of the many other food/drink venues in Bishops Stortford, rather than to this establishment. They certainly do not know what hospitality is or what it takes to run a successful pub.

Went there for a weeknight meal after a walk in the nearby countryside only to be told there is no food being served( despite there website saying otherwise) decided to stay for a drink and wish I hadn't bothered, the beer was awful and smelt strange, the garden is very run down and messy and the landlady was moody, all in all a terrible experience and won't be returning any time soon
