popped in on Christmas Eve after enjoying the carols in the precinct which was a vibrant affair, had a pint in the village bar, vibrant and full of life and Christmas joy. then made the mistake of visiting the White Horse. The landlord was very drunk and surly to me. the regulars were, as always crowded at the bar near the entrance which always make anyone intimidated when coming in to the public bar, Mark made it clear I was not his friend, he didn't like me and told me it was my fault the pub was closing down on Christmas day as I and other villagers didn't use the pub enough. oh, the pub is open today, but will i go in... probably!

Visited this place whilst staying at the Travelodge on a business trip. Warm welcome from the landlord (and his 2 lovely labradors) and a friendly clientele with whom I was soon chatting away about the football etc. Didn't eat but the beer was great and what's more they had Powers whisky, a rarity in pubs in the UK. If I'm ever in the area again I'll be sure to visit.

Great pub, friendly staff and locals. Lovely evening meals for all tastes. Luckily the pub is still a pub and not a restaurant that serves drinks, it's how a pub should be!

Capel St Mary is such a nice village, but after a 5 year break, we revisited the only pub in the village. Never again. It is a run dosn shappy embarrassment. Beer was cloudy, the pool table was on a slant, the place smelt of last night's curry night and the language from the other bar was appalling. Many years ago, this was a thriving family pub. Now it seems to be dying on its feet. Such a shame, as uit has so much potential.

Totally disgusted with this so called pub. Stayed overnight in local hotel and went to pub for meal as strongly recommended. Got to the pub and bought drinks and asked to order food from them. They accepting the drink order at 820 which had been paid for and told us we needed to leave by 845 because we had a 4 month baby who was in a car seat and making no noise. This place doesnt feel welcoming at all got stared at as we went in and none of the locals moved from the walkway to allow us to get in and out. Not to mention a child under 18 sat at the table with a dog next to them where food was being served. Upon leaving the locals and owners stared both as we walked out and drove out. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone

After a lovely 2h walk around the village of Capel St Mary, my fiancé and I were looking to sit down for a cup of tea, just to be told "it is a pub here not a cafe", no hello, no goodbye. I wouldn't bother going back.

The landlord is very friendly - the curry night is amazing and the chef will cook any dish to your preference of spice. Friendly value for money curry and a pint or a glass of wine for £9.50 excellent value for money.

The pub is quite quaint inside, the food menu seemed a bit pricey and the table we sat at was sticky so we were not inclined to buy any food there in future, the Cappadocia or even the Wenham Queen seemed a better option for that. Staff were OK, note there are dogs allowed to roam inside the pub too.

We met friends at this pub around lunch time. Very old traditional English pub. Quite smelly as there were two dogs laying on the couches. Got dog hair all over our trousers. It doesn't do any lunch time meals or snacks at all. It does food after 5pm apparently. I love animals but when your quite smartly dressed I don't appreciate being covered in hair.

My second review, this time they really went out of there way to give me what wanted, having enjoyed their curry's on numerous occasions before I was chatting to the chef saying I would stop on my way home to get chicken balls, no need as the chef made this off the menu treat for me, even going as far as making a homemade sweet & sour sauce from scratch which was much tastier than what I'm used to. Yet again they have excelled.

Just moved to the village, bank holiday Monday thought I would take my family to the new local. Door was open people inside drinking, only to be told by a rude man behind the bar that they were shut, it looked a state so won't be going back there.

Not quite what it seems, a normal pub, but meals ordered and paid for at the kitchen hatch. Good place for curry's, but also what i would call a normal pub grub menu as well. Meals served to your table in the bar. No bookings taken, just turn up. Certainly cannot complain about value and quality of meals.

Lovely local rustic pub. Staff friendly. Food is INCREDIBLE and excellent value for money! The chef provides a good range of food, all cooked to order. His specialty is curries but the other dishes are just as mouth - watering and delicious! Very convenient if staying at the capel st mary travelodge. Cannot recommend this pub highly enough!

A proper pub with a good range of drinks in a friendly & lively bar. The kitchen serving a great range of authentic Indian food (the Goan prawn is amazing) also all your normal pub grub from fish & chips to mixed grills, the chef is friendly & accommodating & seems more than willing to cater to your tastes offering to make your curry's as mild or hot as you like! A real treat of a place to eat.

There's always a warm welcome at The White Horse from Mark (the landlord) and the locals. We regularly call in for one of the home-made curries - they are absolutely delicious and excellent value for money. The chef will make it as hot or as mild as you like so, for example, you can have a hot Korma (usually a mild dish) or a mild Madras (usually hot!). We are so lucky to have this pub in the village!

If you enjoy pub food, The White Horse continues to provide patrons with excellent food - the home made curries are superb and cannot be beaten in the near vicinity! What more can you ask for - curry and pint (they do other food in addition to the curries - all equally as good) in a warm and welcoming environment!!

was staying at the hotel nearby with my partner (travel lodge) and was craving for a decent curry .but it was to my surprise to see the chef preparing fresh curries to the order and thought of trying a mild chicken Vindaloo to see if that comes out of a jar....or get prepared to the order...and to my surprise...it was bliss!!!!never thought I could ever get a mild vindaloo...which does prove the authenticity of the curries..and have to admit It was after a long time I had a curry second to none..my partner ordered mix grill...for 13 quid ..which was the most succulent steaks she had..well not at that price anyways...excellent overall...

I live locally and regularly visit here. I absolutely love the food and the Chef's !! I always try mixing things up a bit as I am very picky and fussy with my food and I never have any problems in doing so. I have a laugh with the staff and they are always willing to try out my crazy ideas of food !! There is such a verity of foods but not too much that it is over whelming. The price is ideal for what you are getting. Also on a Thursday if you buy a curry you get a free drink with it.. Can't complain about that !! The atmosphere is amazing and always very welcoming. I always suggest going here with friends for a casual drink and some lovely homemade food.I would defiantly recommend the Fajitas and Gammon Steak. Oh and the Curry !! I can't even decide ... I'm just going to say all of it !! :)

Was also staying at the Travelodge just down the road, was recommended the pub by the receptionist, made the 5 minute walk round the corner to see the pub in front of me, thinking it it was closed at first, then walked around the other side and dubiously walked in, was surprised to find it quite busy, was sent to the kitchen hatch to talk to the chef, which I had't done before, but was nice to see a clean kitchen and the chef was very friendly, I ordered a curry and was asked how i would like it, mild, medium or hot.Took a while to come, but was in no rush, but was very surprised, thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be back!!

We were recommended The White Horse by the staff at the Travel Lodge, but when we turned up we nearly walked away as the building seems a little run down. Goodness, are we glad we stayed! Very much a 'local' pub, but the locals are friendly and all happy to chat, not made to feel like an outsider at all.Had a bit of a wait for the food, but it was well worth it, absolutely amazing! Very obviously home made and cooked fresh. I had carbonara and hubby had beer battered fish. Definitely not a microwaved meal! They have not fallen into the trap of providing a large menu that can't be delivered, it was about quality not quantity of choice, the size of meal was good too.Just wish we lived locally so we could eat here every week! Very, very impressed.

As a long time user of The White Horse - over 37 years - we have had some excellent landlords and their wives who have become great friends to many ( Mick and Zoe, Ralph and Jane ) and now we have Mark Collins who has transformed the pub into a good real ale and live music venue. Anyone who visits is assured of a genuine good welcome. The pub is the best it has ever been in my experience. Mark has a great sense of humour and so do the regulars who also welcome any new faces ( new residents or travellers ). I have found the Indian cuisine absolutely delicious and the chef makes all meals himself on the premises. I am a lifetime pub user and count myself lucky to have such a great venue as my local. Long may it continue. ( this review is genuine and unsolicited ).

We were staying at the Travelodge, Capel St Mary and walked (5min) to the White Horse for a meal. We were definitely not disappointed, the food was freshly cooked and delicious. My partner was still raving about his Mexican Chicken fajitas today. I had Chicken Breast with cheese sauce, mushrooms, chips and grilled tomatoes, mmmmmmm. Well done we will be sure to go back when we are next in the area. Keep up the excellent standard.

This pub looked closed as we approached but round the back people were sitting outside enjoying their drinks. We went in and saw the menu with clear instructions for ordering from the kitchen hatch. To see such a clean kitchen was excellent as was the fact that all meals are cooked fresh. My daughter had the vegetarian curry and I chose a grilled chicken breast. The portions were generous and attractively served. Both of us were very happy with the quality and flavour of the dishes. The chef came and checked that we were happy with the food. Meanwhile the barman also came and passed the time of day with us. We were left with the definite feeling that no one was rushing us and we were not being pushed to buy more drinks. Many regulars were enjoying some sport banter and then watching the TV for the World Cup match.Luckily we left at half time as it was still light for the walk back to the hotel. We had just arrived in the car park as the first drops of rain started and then a thunderstorm.

Was staying at the Travelodge at Capel St. Mary and concerned i would have to get back onto the A12 for food. Happily this pub was within walking distance. Not much to look at but once inside received a warm welcome. A good selection of beers. The food is run as a francise which seems to work well. Varied menu from the basic gammon which I enjoyed to curries and Mexican dishes. When we left the pub was quite full of people just socialising, always a good sign and not often seen these days.

We were staying at the Travelodge in Capel St Mary and this was recommended by the receptionist. I'd done lots of research (primarily through this site) and this place wasn't one that came up. But it really is worth a visit! And it's only a 10 minute walk! The food was fantastic and very good value. Good range of 'pub grub' but also a good range of Indian dishes. I didn't go for the Indian (I never trust pub Indian food! I think they will be jarred sauces..) but they smelled wonderful and looked to be cooked from fresh, so wish I had tried it! I had the gammon, egg and chips and it was all cooked to perfection. My dad had chicken with a pepper sauce and the sauce was one of the best I've ever tasted. There seemed to be a good range of handpulls (4-5 I think) plus a couple of lagers/ciders. I think the food/kitchen is a separate entity to the pub, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it is well worth a visit for the food and the beer!

We celebrated my sisters 50th birthday here ! We had the private function room upstairs which has recently been refurbished and it was lovely. We were allowed in early to decorate with banners and balloons. Baring in mind we were a large group and all opted for three courses the food was still all served together so we had no one waiting, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault it all :) A few of the family stayed and were extremely happy with rooms and the yummy breakfast :)

Yikes. Looked good, ordered two sandwiches to go which I thought were pricy at £8 EACH. Tried to charge me £18. Where I come from 2x8=16 but the lady said 'well thats what it says on the screen'. Genius, I bet NASA want her back when she's finished at the Café. The supposed 'country cheddar and ale chutney' was in fact wholesaler grated cheddar and a tiny scraping of nondescript chutney. These offerings made Greggs cheese and pickle taste like gourmet crafted treats. Came with a bag of crips, the choices were salted or salt and vinegar. No other flavour exists. Confused staff, over priced, overrated. Not everyone is an American tourist folks!
