The White Horse in Maldon

Visited on Christmas Day with a dog. Was sat in a corner with a small table for 3 people . Staff supplied a water bowl for the dog which was good but due to limited room this was spilled all over the floor. Staff found it difficult serving food due to dog being laid on the floor nearby. Had ordered extra special menu and this was not recognised therefore had to ask for initial drinks which were a long time before being served. The service then seemed rushed. Starters were lukewarm. The main course was then served already plated up. Vegetable portion size was small. Not supplied in individual dishes.Nothing special about the meal. We have visited on Christmas Day for the last 3 years and found overall this year’s experience disappointing in comparison to previous years. Unlikely to repeat for next year.

Went for the three course meal on NYE. The atmosphere was lovely and the entertainment was good but unfortunately, the food was not worth £65 per head. The Chateaubriand was lovely and well cooked and the beef dripping sauce was delicious but the plate was missing something. It came with chips but the whole dish was bland considering in was from a ‘special’ menu. The chocolate bomb was a big let down. Firstly, they had obviously been left waiting a while as the ice cream had practically melted. The sponge in the bomb was dry and the dulce de leche sauce was cold. Worst of all, the chocolate bomb itself tasted like it had been made from cheap chocolate. Not only did it not melt when in your mouth, it crumbled when chewed. The service was good when they were actually at your table because the time between courses was excessive. This was the first time we had visited and unfortunately we won’t be back.

Very dog friendly and generally welcoming country pub. My only criticism is that I could smell urine around the toilets.

Just been to the White Hart with friends for lunch. Great atmosphere, great food and most of all excellent service from Roland. Thoroughly recommended.

We met friends we hadn’t seen for a while. There was a live act which was so loud we couldn’t hear each other at times. If you meet for a meal together you want to talk not be drowned out by loud music. Three of us wanted belly pork but there was only one left so we chose again. I chose seafood linguine which was oily and unappetising and meagre given the price tag. We had three starters, three mains and one child size fish and chips and a bottle of wine. The bill for four was over £200. Most definitely not worth it. We won’t be back.

Really lovely pub. The Sunday roast was nice, and the selection of red wine was by glass were good. Our waitress Laura was lovely and made sure we were really well looked after.

Booked for my Mothers 80th. When I booked online I was given the option to request certain things for my Mothers 80th, it did not happen. The food looked great when served but it was Luke warm, meat very dry and the gravy tasted like it was made from a packet. We won’t be going back. Customer service and quality food in this country is appalling. Having said all that, Laura who took care of us was cheerful, thanks Laura. I don’t recommend the trio Sunday lunch!

Pre booking needed. Friendly staffs, prime location & cosy place. Ordered Trio Roasts. Pork crackling was my fav. Beef was tough & chewy. Not worth of money.

Had a fantastic evening in The White Hart with my daughter. The service from Rebecca was exemplary, every detail taken care of and nothing was too much. The Food was delicious and great value. Looking forward to going back again soon. Thank you for a great dining experience Rebecca.

Had a lovely meal at the White Hart last night with my wife and son. Great food and atmosphere with a friendly and efficient service from Rebecca, who also remembered us from previous visits which was nice.

Really enjoyed the food. I opted for the vegan choice which was really nice, my friend’s belly pork was really good too. Service from Laura was excellent. Room for improvement would be that wheelchair accessibility needs improvement. As you go in the doors open into each other. Into the disabled bathroom the large nappy bin made access difficult.

Outrageous prices. A cup of coffee at almost £4 which tasted of water not coffee. A glass of wine £15 !!!! Won’t be rushing back

Sunday Lunch - very very flavoursome. We had two medium roasts…we were going to go for the large but realised the size and found the medium perfect! Might try the large another time. Lovely choice of veg, gammon was absolutely to die for. Couldnt complain about a single thing. Gravy I’m very fussy about but was delicious and good consistency. Dessert was also amazing. Can’t complain would definitely return and recommend!!

We visited for lunch having heard good reviews and we were not disappointed Lovely surroundings and a nice cosy atmosphere. Good selection on the menu and the food was delicious. Was greeted by Justin with a smile, he was so polite and friendly. Served us and was lovely and chatty, can’t recommend the food enough, we had the salt and pepper squid to start which was delicious and followed that with the buttermilk chicken burgers which were so light and crispy. The sauce was amazing! Justin came back to check on how we were doing and was lovely. Can’t recommend enough, visiting the area for a few days and will definitely be coming back

One of the best pub/restaurants around the West Yorkshire area. The food is of highest quality, the staff are second to none and the atmosphere is a cosy one that all contribute to make you want to go back.

Me and my partner did the wine and dine. This is great value for money and I like the fact that you can swop your desert for a after dinner cocktail instead. I had the espresso martini. The food was very good

Absolutely fantastic stay. Staff were brilliant, very friendly, helpful and polite. My room was fabulous. Very clean and very comfortable bed. The meals were amazing!! But I have to mention the tomahawk steak, WOW!! By far, the best steak I’ve ever had, EVER! I will definitely be going back and certainly recommend The White Horse to anyone. Thank you again to all the staff, you superstars!!!!

Drinks came fairly quickly but staff slow taking food orders and although our table was booked fairly early it took 50mins from arriving to receive our food.

Good size car park . We eat in the bar which was a good size room was nice atmosphere. I thought the food is average for the price.

The White Hart ticked every box and more. My husband, toddler, baby and I attended for lunch. Nothing was too much. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable giving 5* service with a smile. The food was beautiful. I ordered the salad which I would never normally order from any restaurant, but I wasn’t disappointed. I can’t wait to go back and order again. The building and garden is beautiful in a great location with good parking and dog friendly!! We will definitely back with the family and our dog for more amazing food! Thank you White Hart team

Visited recently on a Friday lunchtime, was busy but we got a table quickly. Very friendly staff and excellent service. I had one of the specialty burgers which was delicious with halloumi fries. Great coffee and the barista was suberb, never stopped the whole time we were there, excellent! Would highly recommend.

Great cosy little pub restaurant with quality food

We had a wonderful dining experience here. Rebecca our server was incredible, made it so special and was great with my little boy. The Sunday roasts was amazing so tasty and big portions. Would recommend 100% one of the best meals out we have had

This pub/restaurant was very good for everything……..except the food. Nice surroundings, pleasant attentive staff but mediocre meals. They advertise the best Ploughman’s lunch in Essex yet supply it with very little salad and what appeared to be Tesco white bread, with no other choice available and very average cheese. We ordered the most expensive item on the menu the Tomahawk steak, but it was more medium raw than medium rare, plus the steak and the vegetables were only just luke warm. The chips were a little soggy (but ok). We went there because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor but it did not live up to expectations.

Popped in on spec, had the vegetarian pie. Really tasty, good firms chunks in sauce, crisp pastry Generous helping of vegetables and extra gravy Very friendly person behind the bar, I’m coming back!

Really disappointed, less than average expensive food

Very expensive for mediocre quality Sunday roasts. The fish dishes were better. Took an hour between sitting down and getting the food and it wasn't very busy. Not planning to return.

Really nice pub. Looks excellent. Was in a Sunday and it was very busy and the food coming out looked excellent. We just had a few starters but each was excellent. Sat outside which is a nice beer garden. Comfortable. Decent amount of space. Lots of parking but still gets quite full.

Called by for a pint with the Yorkshire Driving Club. No time for food, so unable to comment, but the WH was clearly popular at the time of our visit as many diners could be seen waiting to be taken to tables. Plenty of beers, lagers and wines to choose from, although the most expensive pub visited on our local travels. Loverly setting, well worth a visit again

Food was excellent, as it was when we visited previously. I would have liked to have sen the meat pie on the menu but apparently that is only included during the week. Price of a tonic water was high £5+ Overall very good and we shall return

Fabulous lunch with you today. Although you were very busy, service was excellent. We booked for 1.15pm. Warmly greeted and table prepared.

Staff member serving us was friendly. Service was incredibly slow despite it not being busy We waited an hour for our main course to be served after our starter. Had to ask the waitress what was happening with our order as no one came to speak to us and we noticed that customers who arrived after us had been served their mains before us. We were informed they were just waiting for the pizza which didn’t make sense as pizza doesn’t take long to cook. When the food arrived it was very nice , just a shame about the delay and lack of service during that period of waiting.

This was a special lunch in memory of my mother, and everything went so brilliantly. Our menu choices were individually checked, we had an amazing waitress (Summer) who gave us her full attention. From booking (Justin) to checkout (Summer), the experience was 10/10. Thank you so much.

Been here a few times; lovely old pub with elevated food and a good beer selection. Very popular and worth booking to get in the restaurant section. Last visit was 10th July 2024 for lunch. Service was very slow and the menus were incorrect so most of us had to pick something else.

Always have a great time at the White Hart, whether it be for drinks or food. Kate is fantastic & so friendly & our 8 month old adores her! Looking forward to visiting again!

Stopped for Sunday lunch, on the way to the airport, after a drive down from Inverness. Between our family of 4 we had the Trio of Roasts, Steak, Veggie Fig Roast and kids Roast Chicken. All were fantastic and resulted in clear plates. Nice atmosphere, friendly attentive staff and amazing food. Cannot recommend highly enough and we will definitely be back - well worth the drive!!

Went to the White Horse on the basis there was little else open. After looking at the menu, was interested in their claim of the best Ploughmans Lunch! So ordered it. Wow! Huge portion and well presented. I enjoyed it and it certainly lives up to their claims. Staff were friendly and helpful.

We were a large party post funeral so the mood was a bit sombre upon arrival. The delightful Erin saved the day with her fantastic demeanour, attitude and attentiveness. By the time we left, we were all laughing and joking with Erin who gave as good as she got. Next stop Erin, Karen's Diner to truly let that fantastic service shine through! 😂 Thanks in all seriousness for raising our spirits, you were great.

First time visiting for me and my boyfriend and what a lovely pub it was. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming especially our server Laura who was very attentive and checked on us regularly to ensure we had enough drinks and the food was right. She was very efficient and had a great personality adding to the warm atmosphere. We both had steak which was cooked beautifully and exactly how we had both asked we also had the 3 trio desserts which were delicious.

Lovely pub , tasty food , nice staff. Thoroughly recommend.We had the Belly Pork , Linguine, Soup and Fish and chips. All well cooked and well presented. Decent prices .

It's a while since we visited this lovely pud, the food and service is very good with ample portions, would definitely recommend.

I rarely eat vegetarian food - but tried a vegetarian pizza here and it was quite frankly delicious. The desserts were also pretty good! Worth visiting!

I was out at The White Hart in Pool-in-Wharfedale this evening for an early evening meal with colleagues. The food was excellent. I had the sea bass, which was perfectly cooked with a delightful crisp to the skin and soft flesh, served in a delicious sauce. The service was attentive and warm, in fact I noted the warm, kind welcome I received at the bar on arrival. We had a room to ourselves so we generated our own happy and relaxed atmosphere. I'm sure we'll be back.

Summer was lovely, really helpful as one of our party was gluten free. Food was delicious and would definitely recommend. We’ll be back.

Excellent food and staff, attentive and friendly. Only comment we have is that it is easier to eat a desert with a spoon AND a fork especially a tart! Starter knives and forks were removed as we didn't have starters so it would be relatively easy to return the forks with spoons for desert.

We ate on a Tuesday evening, a group of 9, never eaten her before. Food was fantastic, the only thing that trumped the food was the service that Laura provided, prompting, concise, she really knew her stuff and was super witty and friendly! Thanks Laura!!!
