OAK House Bar and Cafe in Maldon

Wife had the granola and I had an Oakhouse breakfast. Both were fine, but my poached egg was very overdone. We'll still be back though. It was quite noisy in there too, as there was a table of 8 behind us of a couple of families and their very noisy young kids, complete with a tablet playing a loud kids TV show. Which was nice.

Good atmosphere but limited menu - once you’ve been a couple of times you need to find somewhere different

Took my mum to oak house for her birthday, the staff were very welcoming and even organised a balloon for her, they were very attentive and we had a great time. Food was cooked perfectly and service was perfect, highly recommend and can’t wait to go back

Stopped for some lunch with friends. We had a table outside which is on the pavement at the front of the building. The high street was busy so a great location to people watch. The menu is big. Two of us went for the chicken ciabatta with crisps and coleslaw and one the feta cheese salad. Which a bottle of Prosecco. The food was yummy and the service was good. I would absolutely recommend for a place to go with friends for lunch.

Stumbled across this amazing place on a sunny mid morning. The menu had a lot to choose from which we were spoilt for choice. We both decided on the house breakfast which was to die for, the quality of ingredients really stood out from other places we have been, by far great value for money. The surroundings were lovely and peaceful with a classic sound of 80s music in the background to top of our morning. We will be visiting again for sure

We recently visited for lunch on a Sunday afternoon on the spur of a moment and was very pleased we did We had the all day breakfast and the children eat from the kids menu (which also acted as a playmat to keep them entertained). All food was made fresh and hot. All was of a high quality and tasty. The coffee was outstanding as well The atmosphere was very relaxed and chilled and we was made to feel very welcome even with young children Stag were attentive without being over powering. Prices was very reasonable for the quality of food Can’t wait to come back and visit again

Knowing the oakhouse for delicious coffee however venturing out for the Greek Night this evening was absolutely amazing! The food and staff were amazing and attentive ! Food was delicious and amazing atmosphere to make it even better - I cannot wait to come back for lunch soon!

We went there for a Sunday roast. Oh my goodness never again. I ordered lamb which was tough, roast potatoes must have been reheated in the microwave because there was no crispness, definitely used frozen Yorkshire pudding, undercooked parsnips and gravy which was like water with no flavour at all. I fed most of the meal to my dog, so happy little girl.

Really nice place for a spot of lunch and a drink in the middle of Maldon town, had a ploughman's lunch it was awesome, will definitely be returning, highly recommended 👍

Wow, what a find absolute little gem, first time here and it’s great, top quality food and service, have a 2 week old baby and it’s so hard to find a coffee shop we can go to with space for a pram. This place ticks all the box’s 😋😊😊☺️☺️

My first time here, despite living in Maldon for 25 years. After spending time to choose my meal, I was then told that some things on the menu were not available because the new "chef" had not been shown how to cook them! Scampi was a bit over fried & hard, but my colleagues sandwich was very good - as was the coffee. Staff were friendly & polite, but not very attentive as they were busy elsewhere. Warm & comfortable, will try again another time.

Food was great, really tasty and good portion. However, service was non existent... no one checked in and no one cleared plates away etc. When we wanted to order dessert we had to literally hunt someone down, only to be told that the kitchen had just closed!! I can understand telling new customers that the kitchen is closed at a set time, but we were effectively half way through our meal! Again, had to hunt someone down to pay the bill. Maybe better for drinks and light bites? Would not visit for main meal again :(

Great warm atmosphere at the Oak House. Food really good & staff very friendly

Fabulous roast in convivial surroundings. The lamb was done to perfection and had freshly made mint sauce. Perfect roasties with delicious bowl of veg. Carrots; tender broccoli spears and red cabbage. Absolutely scrumptious. As if things couldn't get better, dessert was a luscious brownie with ice cream.

Had a great lunch with my husband today. I am a vegan and although there was not a great variety they did have some nice choices. It has a nice atmosphere and the staff are very attentive but not too much.

Food 9/10 if a bit pricy. Good quality ingredients. Service 3/10 I had to get up for sauces. The waitress dropped my toast, left it on the floor and did not replace it. I also had to find someone to pay the bill as no one ever checked on us.

Lovely food, great service. We come here often, my father has mobility issues and uses a wheelchair and the staff really look after him and make him feel welcome. They are always willing to go the extra mile to make his day. Highly recommended 5*

Lovely, clean and spacious interior. Great for big groups or couples. Friendly quick service. We had a really delicious light lunch and hot drinks that were actually hot (not the tepid stuff from machines). Will definitely return.

I agreed to meet my Goddaughter for breakfast this morning, suggesting the Oak House, I was so disappointed, they had three staff and were certainly not busy. The service was dreadful and the waitresses with sullen looking faces, don't these people get any training? It's such a shame as its a lovely venue, the miserable waitresses are spoiling it for the good waitresses who serve with a smile.

Had a breakfast brioche outside with a cuppa. Very enjoyable and tasty. Thank you. Just my preference, a little extra ketchup would have been great, but in no way detracted from the meal. Prompt service and food came swiftly for what seemed to be an increasingly busy bank holiday Monday morning. Will be heading back.

First Time Visting Tonight (Saturday 26th) Wasn't Sure What To Expect Due To Mixed Reviews I Have Been Given In The Past. Was With My Husband & My 2 Friend's Decided To Pop In For 1 Drink Ended Up Staying For A Few Hours Lol. They Had A Dj On Who Played Good Music,Cocktails Were Amazing, Atmosphere Was Good As Well. Toilets Were Clean And Tidy Which Is A Bonus On A Busy Saturday Night ✅️ Definitely Will Be Returning Soon ☺️

Watch out for over charging on drinks! Twice in our party we were overcharged when ordering drinks!! Weights and measures act doesn’t seem to apply here

The waitress Amy was outstanding. She could not do enough to help. Her long curly hair is beautiful. Very sweet and great with the kids. Food lovely. Thank you Amy for a great experience and service.

First experience at the Oak House, certainly not the last! Solo trip for a bite to eat and a drink whilst I worked - excellent service from start to finish. Very welcoming, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere, quick service, large Latte was excellent and the halloumi skewers were delicious. I recently had the pleasure of working alongside the staff at Oak House for an event. Despite many pressures and challenges the team worked together to make sure the day was a success. Chef Kip and waiting staff Bronte, Amy, Emma, and Amy deserve special mention as they were all so kind, patient and hard working. The other staff are also fabulous! Keep up the amazing work guys.

Too busy on weekends, bouncers have absolutely no clue what they are doing,. Far to crowded from a visitors view and also a safe aspect. Breakfast time and lunch/afternoon - highly recommend

Please DO NOT bother visiting this poor excuse for a restaurant with rude, unprofessional staff and diabolical service. We booked ahead for a table of 6 adults and 2 children for my Dads 60th birthday celebration. On arrival, not only were we squashed into a tiny bench style table and given a dirty high chair, we also waited over an hour to be told half of the dishes were not available, we then waited even longer to be told that a fuse had blown in the kitchen and that they can no longer serve any meals so we had no choice but to leave. There was absolutely no communication from management, no decent apology for the inconvenience at all and then to top it all off, an incredibly spiteful, young waitress with brown wavy hair, wearing a crop top followed us outside of the restaurant in an intimidating manner, demanding that we pay for the incredibly poor “service” provided which had already been miscommunicated by the previous waitress. I also might add, the order this person was barking at us to pay for consisted of incomplete small plates (because apparently they didn’t have half the food that was on the menu) and 1 round of drinks. To add insult to injury this woman was justifying the entire experience as if it was our fault. AWFUL customer care, AWFUL service and RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL staff. Safe to say we will never return to this circus ran by clowns. Don’t waste your time visiting unless you’re willing to endure an incredibly disappointing experience from start to finish.

Don't waste your time, poor service and long waits. Food is average at best if it ever actually makes it to the table. Been two times both have been disappointments. A Greg's sausage roll and a drink anywhere else is a better option. Lowers the Maldon standard.

Had the most awful experience at the Oakhouse, sub-standard from start to finish. I had booked a table weeks before for a Sunday lunch to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. There were 8 of us all together, 6 adults one child & a toddler, which I had informed the restaurant of at the time of booking. When we arrived we were shown to our table which was for 6. When we said to the waitress it will be a bit of a squeeze she said they were busy & full so she could add a chair onto the end next to a high chair for us. We reluctantly agreed & all squeezed in, the high chair was dirty & the table was sticky. We ordered drinks & some small plates to start before our main meal. Wish we hadn't bothered! We waited 40 minutes only to be told that not all of the food we had ordered was available! We settled for the reduced starters & they were mediocre at best. Our glasses were empty & nobody came to offer us another drink. After an hour of being in the restaurant, we were informed & I quote 'the kitchen is broke'! I kid you not! Apparently a fuse had blown and we were not going to be able to have any food! Even though the group of young guys on the next table had their mains despite the fact that they had ordered after us! We were offered a free drink but of course we were all hungry, we had two young children with us & they didn't want a drink they wanted their lunch. We got up to leave & then the young waitress told us we had to pay! For what? Appalling service? incomplete food order? filthy conditions? No chance! We walked outside and were then pursued by another young woman who did not introduce herself to us so we had no way of knowing if she was a supervisor or management of any kind. Instead she basically just wanted to tell us that we had upset a 17 year old and then continued to defend herself and the rest of the staff by telling us it wasn't their fault! She was then joined by the chef who did the same thing. No apology, no empathy, no understanding of the fact that we had two hungry children, our celebration had been ruined and we had had enough! Needless to say we will not be returning to this disorganised, haphazard, chaotic shambles of a restaurant. Absolutely disgusting treatment!

Tired, slightly hungover, and thirsty, I stumbled across the oak house on my way to watch my friend play football. Upon entry, I was warmly welcomed by the staff, and by Taylor in particular, who asked my what I would like to drink. It had just gone midday so a pint was on my mind. I ordered a Moretti, which was poured exceptionally. The first sip was like nectar, and I sat down and started speaking with the staff. I got into a conversation with a staff member who will remain nameless about her night out in Chelmsford and about her ‘friend’ she had seen that night, who had apparently been on a date that night and how he behaved towards her. I understood how she felt, and it felt nice to be there for her with the ongoing issue. They were all hard at work, and informed me of a comedy night they have at their venue in a few weeks which I am considering attending, and although I thought the comedy had started early when a staff member tripped on a step (Ick), I am more than pleased with the £10 ticket prices. The inside of the pub is modern and comfortable, and would highly recommend a visit should you be in Maldon.

A beautiful venue, lovely atmosphere and gorgeous coffee. We frequently visit this place as it’s spot on every time. Food is amazing as it the drinks and service. We look forward to returning to this gem of a coffee bar very soon. We highly recommend the coffee house to friends and family.

Once again a really nice place for a breakfast meeting with some friends. However I must say the sausages were on the small side, they looked like half sausages. Other than that. No problems.

Popped in for lunch £36 wasted.. Haven't been before and won't bother again The oakhouse burger was a tasteless beef patty and built into a massive tower with greasy fatty bacon and overpowering greasy cheese. Virtually no relish. Chips were ok but for £15 this didn't represent good value . My ham egg and chips was a disappointment too. Slippery slidey fried eggs covered in grease on top of a tough chewy grilled gammon steak. We both left disappointed and this meal was not good value.

Very tasty, clean friendly service. Very nice setting and atmosphere. Food perfectly cooked. Open fire really topped off a very pleasant lunchtime.

Give it a miss if you are vegetarian. Don’t know who was cooking but my meal was over cooked. Sausage and haloumi completely cooked to a cinder, and they have the cheek to serve this to customers. Awful meal, avoid, they clearly have untrained staff in the kitchen that have no pride in how food should be cooked.

Their service was intelligently planned and superbly executed. Quality food, efficient organisation and lovely friendly staff. If you’re looking for a venue for a large dinner party, I’d really highly recommend the Oakhouse.

I have been regularly visiting here for quiet beers to pass time over the years and also for lunches with friends. The food is very nice and they have a good selection of beer. I've only really ever been when it's very quiet but I believe it can have be more lively at the weekend

Went this morning for breakfast, lovely welcoming staff and super full English breakfast the walnut bread was delicious, highly recommend, cheaper and better than the continental cafe across the road.

Really disappointed. Walked in and wasn't welcomed, greeted or looked at by staff. Seated ourselves and passed several tables in need of clearing and noticed straight away the sticky floor! When we sat the table was also filthy and covered in crumbs so I sent...

Went to visit for lunch today, upon entering the floor was SO sticky and unclean my feet stuck to it! Not much better when we seated ourselves and there were no menus out and the table was filthy! When my partner brought back an old worn menu from the bar covered in a film of dirt we decided to leave and go to what used to be wimpy!! Much cleaner and friendlier. Will never try the oakhouse now.

Well done to the tall blonde young waiter, took note of all my dietary needs which are many. Had a gorgeous lunch of chicken and avo sandwich with salad. A lovely relaxing atmosphere. Well done 👍

If I could put zero I would. Staff totally ignored you, to busy on phones flirting with kitchen staff. They could earn a lot more if staff where attentive. We had to go elsewhere for a coffee. Customer service so bad it overlooked anything else. I would rather staff on the ball to needs than looking in mirror texting and flirting.

Really rather sweet. Had a late breakfast on Sunday morning there. Not to busy and service was attentive. I sat inside as the roadworks traffic lights made car fumes rather unattractive with food. Might return for an evening to see how different it is then. Recommended

We arrived here at about 9.15 on Sunday morning. We went early as we had guests coming for lunch. At 10.05 we were still waiting for our food, and on enquiring were told it would still be another 10 minutes. At that point we decided to leave. I said to the young waiter that I assumed we wouldn't have to pay for our coffee, and he said no, and we'll give you a voucher for free coffee next time. After waiting 5 minutes for a voucher we had to leave without it as we were now running very late. I appreciate they were short staffed and busy, but there was another family whose order was taken less than 2 minutes before ours and they'd been served and finished eating in that time. Such a shame its spoiled our opinion of them.

Lovely old building and decor, good selection of really nice value for money food. Great service from really nice, friendly, cheerful staff. We went in for lunch, never been there before, we were very pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth a visit, will be going again. No food served in the evening though.

This establishment can be found near the top of the High Street & has seating both inside & outside the building. They can provide you with drinks & snacks or something more substantial if you prefer.
