The service was shocking when the starters came out after waiting a hour not all came out 2came out 10mins after the others had finished their starters. No apologies The mains we waited 45mins again no apologies food not great I had 1bite out of my vegan burger it was awful. For 16.00I expected more. Had to get something on my way home as was hungry It's a shame as this place has had a amazing redecoration If I ever go back it will be for drinks only

Recently extended and modernised this rural pub keeps so much of it Olde Worlde charm, but with modern sophisticated charm Greatly extended it retains the smaller nooks and rooms, making it ideal for family meals or secluded dates. Outside seats under cover and an external bar. Food is top notch, be aware the Sunday roasts require you to prepare, and maybe avoid the starter! Some of the best chips I've eaten locally. It's worth drive, cycle or walk out this far. So lucky it's got good parking, is on a cycle route and has many great local walks. Revision Has quiz on the second Thursday of the month

Had lunch here last week. 5 adults £150. Service polite and quick food very nice. Good selection of beers and nice atmosphere. Will be going again. Update. We tried to eat here last night, terrible service. Over 1 and a half hours to get our mains, which we cancelled, starters took 45 minutes which were wrong... Complained to the manager and got a refund. We will be in contact with the manager via email today.

The 2 ales they had were off, my partner had madri and for the 2 drinks £9.05, do yourselves a favour, go to weatherspoons or Toby at least they have the Lagers and a selection of bitters, John Smiths, London pride, ipa, doom bar. The weatherspoons also do Abbot and a wider range, and you can pay in CASH

Extremely disappointing experience. We called on Sunday to reserve a table specifically for the Sunday roast, and they confirmed availability. After driving 30 minutes to get there, we were informed upon arrival that they had no roasts left. It was a complete waste of time and effort, with no real apology or sympathy for the inconvenience they caused. A one-hour round trip for nothing. I would recommend avoiding this establishment if this is how they treat their customers

Really great food, peri chicken was brilliant. Service was awful though, disorganised and not all but some quite rude. We were told there was no table service on the patio but if we sat on the tables with the grass, we could order from outside. Having moved to the table on the grass we go to order from the outside bar but it had an entirely different menu with none of the items we had planned to order. By this time our table on the patio was taken and none left, we explained what had happened to the young lady waitress. Who did absolutely nothing to help despite being misled by the staff. All she could say was it's against policy to sit anywhere else and order from the menu. Eventually not a long wait for another table, which was covered in food and didn't even bother wiping down until we asked after our starter. Definitely go for the food and not the service and be aware of the seating arrangements and different menus on either.

When we visited London after an eight-year hiatus, the first place on our must-visit list was White Bear, a pub we used to frequent regularly when we lived here. Returning after so many years, I was delighted to find that the charm of the place has only grown with time. White Bear still captivates with its inviting atmosphere, and I must say, it didn't disappoint in the least. The pub food remains some of the best we've had, full of hearty flavors and classic dishes that are done just right. Since our last visit, the place has been expanded to accommodate more guests, making it even more comfortable without losing any of its cozy, traditional pub feel. The service was as excellent as ever, with a friendly and attentive staff that made sure we had everything we needed. It was the perfect spot for a relaxed weekend lunch, bringing back fond memories while also creating new ones. If you're looking for a great pub experience in London, White Bear is still at the top of the list.

It's a lovely pub in a great setting. We sat outside and quite liked to see the changes made since last visit. Our experience is as follows.. Waiter was new but really helpful and attentive so no issues there. Time it took for food to arrive and in-between courses and to get final bill was too long to be honest. Food...I've had a lot better at the White Bear. Although the cauliflower vegan starter was very tasty, my Roast was very salty and by the time the cutlery was given (asked twice ..New waiter eventually got it, did not realise we could, maybe should have gone over and got our own) it had gone cold. Meat was good, everything else bit sloppy. Took most of it home in doggy bag for animals. Other guests disappointed in the vegan burgers. I personally didn't have dessert but tasted son's sticky toffee pudding and again not the best I've had. Waited a while for bill then my son went inside to pay. Waiter did ask if everything was OK, we said dinner was a bit cold and he apologised for that. Would love for these little issues to be addressed and improved upon as would love to return. Didn't feel it was £150 well spent:-(

Sadly the heart has been ripped out when it had its refurbishment, I have been to the bar to order food and drinks, which was a mammoth task as the bar staff were more interested in their personal conversation! First visit was on 27th June as a family of four. Service was incredibly slow & two of the main meals were awful, dry chicken & tough flat bread in one meal & a fish pie that didn’t contain the fish as listed in the menu, in fact it contained hardly any fish. We complained & were offered the chance to re-visit (on them) on 24th July which I thought was a generous offer. However I wish we hadn’t have bothered. Again the service was painfully slow, we were there for 2 and a half hours in total before we gave up waiting for our final course. Two of the starters arrived, the other two came along ten minutes later. Same happened with the main, three meals arrived, 15 minutes later the fourth was bought out. I ordered medium rare fillet steak, when it arrived it was well done. This went back uneaten, the Manager apologised saying that the way it was cooked was embarrassing. The other meals were ok, hence the two star rating, rather than one. We then ordered our desserts, simple stuff like key lime pie which presumably just needed to have a portion cut & put on a plate. After waiting 45 minutes without our desserts we gave up & walked out. We were not the only table complaining about the service, all of the other guests around us also complained at some point during the evening. Needless to say we won’t be going back!

We have been coming to the White Bear for years. Today was our 1st time back after the renovations. Unfortunately, the old English Country pub atmosphere has been replaced by a generic gastro pub vibe. There are far, far too many tables for the kitchen to cope. It took 30 min to even be asked for our drink orders, nearly an hour to get our mains which were cold and then 45 minutes for our deserts. There seemed to be a lot of waitresses around but it was very slow going. My Muscles were fantastic but those who ordered the roasts were disappointed in the size of the plate. We won’t be returning unfortunately.

This crispy duck salad was pretty spectacular. The watermelon & cucumber salad made it so fresh and complimented the duck really well. It got very busy because a funeral party descended on the pub so I didn't really want to hang around. Also because it was so busy I felt a bit neglected as a party of one outside! I really want to give this place 4 stars, but I can't. There were 12 of us attended for a pearl wedding anniversary. There's sufficient parking, a nice interior and a large outside patio. Food The food in general was good - but one of the scotch eggs came up with the pork surround uncooked. The rest of the food was good. So, 3* instead of 4*. Service Service was friendly. However the uncooked starter was replaced, but no further mention which I think there should have been. And trying to get the bill and pay at the end took 20+ minutes. So, I would have said it was average - 3* - but lowered to 2*. Atmosphere A nice atmosphere. 4 stars. Average 3*. As I said, I would have liked to give it 4* but it was let down by a couple of points, that said it wouldn't take much to elevate it to 4* in my opinion. I would return, and it's worth going to if you haven't been before. If you have been before but it was a long time ago, it's very much more modernised now, different but nice.

Firstly, ignore the reviews that say you need to drive here - it is relatively easy to reach by public transport if you don't have mobility issues. The 464 bus will drop you at the corner of Skid Hill Lane and Sheepbarn Lane, which is less than a mile from the pub. A slightly longer walk through the woods and across Hutchinson's Bank will take you to New Addington tram stop. Arriving this way really enhances the feeling of being at a country pub and is recommended. There is also extensive cycle parking, which is very welcome. The pub has lost a lot of it's esoteric charm in the refurb - the old fish-tank is gone, ditto the many steps and uneven floors. The inside is now flooded with natural light and no longer feels like a hobbit-hole. I do miss some of that quirkiness, but overall it is much improved. The food may be more expensive now (but no more so than any other pub around London) but the quality is better. It used to be a gammon and scampi sort of place, veg fresh from the microwave, no longer. 'Improved' though, not 'excellent' - good enough. One thing of note was the children's pizza, which had a good base made with high quality dough. The children's menu is always the first casualty of a place that doesn't care; this was very reassuring. The service was excellent - the staff were engaging and seemed happy to be there, which is increasingly rare. Whatever you're doing to make this a place people want to work, keep going.

June 2024 Went back as promised in review below on Saturday lunchtime. Food was lovely as before but service was poor both at table and from the kitchen. Whilst we had to wait sometime at each stage I noticed table around us having even longer wait before food arrived. We had several different people serve at the table and were asked if we had ordered drinks and dessert by two different waiting staff with long waits in between before orders taken and food arrived. Our spoons for dessert were just plonked on table together. Restaurant operates timed sittings and if they do this they should improve service to allow customers time at the table. White Bear is cashless which I believe is a shame as we should have a choice. Re-visited following really lovely refurbishment. Excellent meal with great quality food and great, friendly service. Small observations only ordered a mozarella cheese, tomato and basil pizza and there were only three small basil leaves would have been better to have had a few more to taste. On arrival we were seated at a table right next to people already seated and as the restaurant was not that busy it would have been nice to have been spaced out a little rather than sitting on top of others although I appreciate that this would not be possible if the restaurant was busy. However would still definitely recommend and we will be back. Previous visit Lovely meal and great service. Would recommend.

Firstly a gorgeous looking establishment , everything you want to see from a Country pub and was pleasantly surprised at the standard of refurbishment. We booked for Sunday lunch for 4 and was really looking forward to it. Our server was young and frankly miserable. I'm not sure if she is new, inexperienced or just not a people person but we never once experienced a smile. Drinks took forever to arrive but we're all in a good mood and looking forward to lunch. Lunch came, the wrong plates given to 2 of our guests, who had to swap after they realised they both had each other's lunch. The food was served and the waiters disappeared, no offer of any condiments, so had to seek service and wait around 5 minutes for a blob of English mustard and was told they had run out of apple sauce....it was 1.30pm. The extra order of roast potatoes never arrived which were very much needed as only 3 potatoes per plate and at £22.95 was disappointing. When we pointed out that we had not received the potatoes, the server was quick to defend herself by saying she had requested them. No apology, no would you still like them, nothing! We had to again ask where our second drinks order was, which we could see was sitting at the bar awaiting collection. Truly disappointing, not what we were expecting or have experienced before, if this is what refurbished looks like, then bring back the old staff who always greeted you with a smile, made polite conversation and made you feel very welcome, none of which we experienced today. As we were leaving there is a hand written sign tempting you to try a steak... Look at the spelling mistakes, at least we left laughing. Not sure we'll be back....

Haven’t been for a couple of years but it is still in a lovely location if you drive . The charm is still there but it’s new modern look around the bar looks like they haven’t tried to keep in anyway with the character of the rest of the pub . Pub doesn’t take cash which is always an annoyance , we went on a Sunday afternoon around 5pm pub half empty but everyone seem to be eating a roast dinner . Orders the trio of meats £27.95 per plate , it was probably served in about 6-7 minutes. Looked great , meat was good which there wasn’t a great deal of and the roast potatoes were on their last legs but lots of gravy , pigs in blankets were dry which was around £8 and cauliflower cheese was good . 2 drinks came to £80 for average dinner in a lovely pub . It did feel like pub chain food but maybe go between 12-2 . The pub is dog friendly and Lee the manager came over and said hello to the dog and us which was nice .

You throw that on and people are trying to stick to a budget these days. For that reason we shall not be returning. The service charge isn't even reasonable given it took so long to get sauces, drinks and simple things that shouldn't take but a minute.

Insipid chain gastro-pub, with average food and zero atmosphere, totally devoid of its former character and charm. This used to be a favourite stop for a quick pint when we ventured out for a walk in the nearby countryside, but the recent renovation is awful. It's a Grade II listed 16th century building but you'd hardly know it. Cosy nooks have been knocked through to create a large, loud and characterless dining area. There are now giant glass patio doors, fake wooden beams overhead and a modest menu printed on ivory-coloured A3. The only cider available is Inches. And the Sunday roast was small and overpriced (meat, well cooked; everything else was practically desiccated). The staff were pleasant enough and it was clean. But that's really the best thing I can say about it. Gutted.

Started going here back in the 1970s. Was a pub with true character and interest. Dating back to the C16 there was history. Over the years it changed, with modest modifications, but more recently moving from a classic, delightful, country pub into an Instagram/Facebook gastro pub, which is NOT a pub at all, but a restaurant. There's no pub about the place at all. Our last visit was just before it closed, and many, many months (including sone ore opening visits) later we visited again when it first opened. We were disappointed even though the manager and staff were very welcoming and offered incentives to return. It's a shame that it's listed building status hasn't protected it from the, now far too common ruining of our traditional British pub status.

First of all be aware - the icon on the map is not where the place actually is - it's on the corner of Featherbed Lane and Fairchildes Road. Second...it's no longer the traditional and atmospheric old country pub that it was before renovation. It's rather more modern and, to be blunt, soulless. It's probably nice if you don't have the context of knowing it before. We went for Sunday dinner. Roast was...sold out. Half the desserts likewise. It was just short of an hour between our arriving and our food coming, which would be fine if they were busy, but they weren't. Food was good, to be fair. and the serving staff were very pleasant, which is always good. The bill, when it came, was wrong as we another table's drinks added to it. Fortunately we checked and it was corrected without issue but it shouldn't have happened. It wasn't a terrible evening - food was good as I say and the previous place had its issues as well - but there's still some work to be done I think.

Went for a Sunday Roast with family. Tasty food but very small portions for the high price (a few tiny roast potatoes and a carrot for vegetables.) The service was also bad. We were not asked how the food was & completely left alone after receiving our main meal - had to get our own dessert menus whilst the restaurant was empty. It didn't help that a piled plate of food was left waiting on the bar for the manager as we were leaving. For a lovely pub that has just been renovated, it was dead on a Sunday afternoon for roasts.

From the outside it looked lovely. I'm guessing they were understaffed. Was served my dinner to find it belonged to someone else! Having put my fork in the peas it was taken away and given to someone else! Perhaps it's better when fully staffed but not a good experience today

This was our third visit since refurb and we felt it had gone downhill. The service was good and staff pleasant but the food poor. I had the chicken roast. It was luke warm and minimal. Very little vegetables which looked unappetising and didn't taste nice. Not value for money. My partner had the beef and blue cheese pie, the mash potato was weak and watery, the pie wasn't substantial, no taste of the cheese and again little vegetables. A shame as a good start.

We were once regulars at the White Bear, drawn in by its charming atmosphere and welcoming staff. Following months of extensive renovations, we eagerly anticipated revisiting the pub. Unfortunately, our excitement turned to disappointment upon arrival. The once cozy and familiar ambiance seemed to have vanished. The White Bear has undergone a dramatic modernization, losing the authenticity and character that once made it stand out. It now resembles a generic chain establishment, devoid of the quirky charm and mysterious allure it once possessed. The food and drinks, while passable, no longer evoke the same satisfaction they once did. Similarly, the service has declined, lacking the warmth and attentiveness that once defined the pub. We left longing for the days when it exuded genuine character and hospitality.

Now taken over by Brakspears and extensively modernised - taking away much of the charm of the old pub. Food still OK and service is still attentive and friendly

6/04/24 We went to the White Bear our first visit since it's been refurbished. I personally feel it's lost a lot of its character and charm, but I understand it had to be done for it to make money. Though it was a Saturday and I appreciate it was busy, the service left a lot to be desired, more staff should be employed to cover the turnover. I shared the camembert with my daughter and my son had ribs for our starter, so we had to use our fingers, there was no finger bowls and we had to ask for them. My husband had the Scallops and the Monk Fish for mains the very very unfortunate thing was both dishes had exactly the same sauce, very disappointed, though each dish was lovely in its own right, just needed a little more thought & imagination with the sauces. The veggie/vegan dishes were flavorful. I found the cocktail list disappointing. I would go back, however it's not somewhere I would take someone for a special occasion.

The white is a nice pub in the middle of nowhere. Perfect stop on your cycling for a pint. The pub went recently under a major refurbishment and has lost some of the characters that once had. It does look more comfortable now and it's got a massive beer garden and parking too.

Really lovely environment, very accommodating. However I went on a Sunday and made the mistake of having a roast, It seems that because it's a Sunday roast there is almost a lack of finesse. Have been before though (not on a Sunday) and been very impressed by the food! Maybe I went on an off day? But highly recommended

Having previously left a 5 star review, this is our first visit since its revamp. It has lost lots of its charm, individuality and character. Some food was overly salty and card payment only.

Wrong exit on the road and I ended up getting to The White Bear. It was 18:30 and the Sunday roast hit the spot. Even had to ask for extra Yorky which they had to prepare fresh. Nothing else needed to add the pictures speak for themselves. Stunning garden, young polite staff will definitely come back soon with some friends.

"My recent visit to The White Bear left much to be desired. Despite arriving with my family, including young children, we were left waiting at our table for nearly 20 minutes without any attention from the wait staff. The lack of concern for customer service was evident, as no one seemed to acknowledge our presence or offer any assistance. When I finally approached a staff member to inquire about our order, I was informed that food needed to be ordered directly from the bar—a fact that was not communicated to us upon arrival. This lack of clarity added unnecessary frustration to our dining experience. Additionally, the cleanliness of the tables left much to be desired. It was disappointing to see such neglect in basic hygiene standards.

Visited with friends last week - first time since refurbishment. Made veryvwelcome and service was first rate. Wine was excellent. One of us had vegetarian paella and didn't enjoy it (staff did offer to take off bill). Otherwise, all starters, 3 mains and desserts were enjoyed very much. Would recommend.

Beautifully refurbished but we were put in a freezing cold area , the heating had broken, although we asked to move, the staff said tables were booked. The whole time we were there, there were empty tables. It really spoilt our experience.

Wife booked us a table for Valentine’s Day. We had told them that we would have our puppy with us and they were fine with that. We turned up earlier that we had booked for so they made sure to give us a table with plenty of room for the puppy and us. They were very friendly and hospitable. As a chef I don’t tend to enjoy eating out as I find myself criticising too much but this was such a great experience I felt that I had to write about. The food was fantastic and a lot of it. Excellent service and they didn’t just put service charge on the bill for a service that really deserved every penny. Was happy to tip 15%. We liked it so much we booked a table for Mother’s Day before we left. Great to see that the refurbishment done to a very high standard too.
