We ate here last week - this place holds many happy memories across 5 decades - the roaring fire may have gone, but the food service & decor are still first class. Karen was a splendid waitress - the chef is doing a great job here!

We had a very disappointing experience here today. We asked to be seated outside, but the staff refused, saying they couldn’t serve outside at that time. Fair enough — but they also made no effort to find us a table inside. They simply told us the restaurant was full and left us standing there. Meanwhile, we watched two tables become available, and no one even looked our way or offered to seat us. We ended up leaving feeling unwelcome and ignored. Definitely not the kind of service you expect.

I booked out the ‘Cave’ room at the White Bear for my daughter’s birthday. Karen went above and beyond to make sure our day ran smoothly and all the guests were comfortable and catered for. She even offered to set up my daughter’s cake for me while I was busy dealing with the baby. Excellent service and lovely food.

The food was SO good!! The staff were so welcoming and friendly. Karen, our waiter, went above and beyond to ensure we had a really lovely time. We had to wait a little for our mains to be served but it was totally worth the wait! Will absolutely be returning again soon. Thanks so much!

We’ve been to the White Bear a few times and this visit was, as always, an absolute pleasure. Food was great, attentive service was flawless and the pub was busy so in my wee world you’ll never get an atmosphere that 100% suits but a 5* I think for me. Only criticism, and definitely not about service or food, is that it is now a “no cash zone” and maybe I missed that fact on the menu but perhaps it would be good to have this info in bold text to avoid any difficulties when paying up at the end of your meal.

The menu was really mouth watering. The food served really good too. But the service was slow and very disorganised… Kept having to ask again for the kids menu (which they ended up having to print?), the kids starter, and then it took a good 30min between starters and mains. It wasn’t that busy… Bit disappointing really because if things had moved faster we would have ordered a dessert.

Took my mum for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. Didn't book ahead and were sat inside what felt like a fireplace even though other tables were available during our entire visit. Service was absolutely terrible. Food took an hour to come out. Drinks took half an hour. Even a request for ketchup took nearly 20 minutes. Was told on paying the bill that a chef was away leading to delays but not sure why they means it takes half an hour to bring just two drinks. Food was also lukewarm at best. A real mess of a lunch and no offers to take any money off the bill. Two drinks and a meal each took over 2 hours. Not good enough and won't be returning.

Possibly the best Sunday roast I've ever had! Lovely setting and ample seating outside too, will be back!

The revamp on this place is incredible. Very friendly staff, food was on point. The only thing that was very mildly annoying was the slight flickering in the lights.

This recently refurbished country pub is only a few minutes’ drive from Croydon and feels like it’s out in the countryside. Friendly staff, lots of seating inside and out.

Haven't been here since before it's refurb, very impressed with the way it's been extended. Looks in keeping with the original building, car park is now much better than before and also a lot larger. Good range of dishes on the menu at fair prices. Service was good despite small numbers of staff on duty. Food was very good, well cooked and presented. A good range of drinks are available, be warned the mojitos that my wife had came full to the top of the class, hard not to spill a little!

Food was amazing the service was bit slow but very busy on a Saturday. However, highly reccomend the white bear wonderful atmosphere and great quality food

Excellent quality food and friendly service. Worth booking ahead, and not just for the Sunday roast which is already legendary. Recently completely refurbished with a fresh new look but still cosy, and still ever so homely inside. The food really was good and the service very attentive. Great options for children plus the acoustics were not bad for older people. Perfect for special family occasions. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because the lights were flickering. It was not just the lights above our table but our whole section. Quite distracting.

Visited midday in the middle of the week. Bit busy which meant we waited a while for the food to arrive. Friendly staff and we all enjoyed what we ordered..would recommend.

First time here and everything was great from the service to the food and their lemon meringue pie fantastic.....willbe back!

This is a lovely country pub. We had Sunday roast and it was lovely. My lamp shank was soft and tasty. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to our request.

Food was very good but also very small portions! It’s been revamped and has now gone cashless which I feel is wrong! Due to this I will never eat there again as I feel we need to save cash and stop this from happening!

Went for Sunday lunch. There were 15 of us there including 8 children. The food was divine the atmosphere relaxed and our server Karen was amazing. Thank you guys ☺️

Met friends for a Sunday lunch today and I must say the food was incredible ! We had the beef, lamb and chicken dinners and they were all so lovely. The portions were big which is so nice nowadays as most pubs don’t give much with a Sunday dinner anymore. We will definitely be returning with family !

The updated decor is lovely and the place very, very busy; they have the opportunity to make a fortune here if they can get the food & service better. They'll need it as urban rumour has it the update was the best part of .5 million. I have no idea if that's true but I could believe it. We almost gave up waiting! When the fairly high priced food did eventually come, mine was 'just ok' but my husband's fish and chips must have been cooked in contaminated oil; the batter was overpowered by onion- perhaps they had been cooking a lot of onion rings. It wasn't nice. As the service was so slow and the food mediocre we decided not to opt for dessert, although the options looked nice- as did the rest of the menu. Anyway, we were very disappointed. We might try again once the chef has been given some more training or maybe try the Sunday lunch, though they'll have to get up very early to compete with the Horseshoe in Warlingham. Must try harder, but shows promise!

Thank you to the team at The White Bear. They accommodated our group of 15 on a Saturday evening at fairly late notice. The food was great, with good vegan and vegetarian options. The service was friendly and attentive…and really added to a great evening. The pub looks great after the refurbishment…a welcome addition to the area and we will be back.

Went for Sunday lunch and everything was amazing! The food was simply amazing! I haven’t had a meal that good in years! The Sunday roasts were delicious as was the wagyu burger. Karen our waitress was an absolute credit to this establishment, she was fantastic! I didn’t get the guy behind the bars name but he was also fantastic. Can’t wait to come back.

Table booked for 12.15, 3 dishes arrived at 1.40 and one dish at 1.45; given that the booking is for a 2 hr slot, that is a very long wait, with little attention from waiting staff. The caesar salad didn't have the egg mentioned on the menu, the mushroom risotto was served on a badly chipped dish. I felt sorry for the waiting staff, they hadn't been trained in communicating with customers when the kitchen was clearly struggling. The wifi didn't work, to fill the time. A pretty building, but management need to employ more staff and train better.

Room for improvement. We were sat in the restaurant area and the Sunday roast was delicious, building and setting are lovely. Went for recommend circular walk first which was good. Unfortunately service was lacking, drinks took forever and came after the food. Struggled to get the bill, had to go up and pay at the end which was awkward. Would be easier to order at the bar to be honest. If staff were more attentive it would make the world of difference but they just seemed oblivious.

This was recommended to us by a friend. We were in the area and we walked in and we were given a very nice table. The roast beef was excellent and the portion was satisfying. We had the pecan pie for dessert which was very tasty. The service was fast and the host/waitress were very friendly. We would definitely visit this place again!!

Enjoyed a great Sunday roast today. Lovely choice of desserts, a bit different from the usual. We went for an hour's walk beforehand, guided by the Brakspear Pub app which is downloadable from the White Bear's website Local Area section. Great idea to provide details of local pub walks.

Amazing!! I requested a quiet table on my reservation as sometimes tables of two are crammed together too much. When we arrived the host took us to his “favourite table” which was secluded in a little porch area. It was so lovely and kind. Despite being sat away from other diners we weren’t forgotten and the service was prompt, attentive yet we didn’t feel rushed either. Great vegetarian options that were different from the usual boring ones!! Mocktails were on point and the food was absolutely delicious. 👌🏼

We had a great time yesterday celebrating my birthday, we had six different main meals and they were all very good, my steak frites was perfectly cooked and very tasty. service was excellent, Karen our waitress was lovely, very friendly and efficient. We are looking forward to returning next month to celebrate another family birthday.

After a long walk in the country side we went to the White Bear for a lovely pub lunch. This is our 3rd time here, yet this was the best experience yet. Adam and Dianne were great. Adam was a brilliant manager, super chatty, really friendly and accomidating for our muddy pup and 8 month old baby. It was ideal that we could sit in one of quieter rooms away from the resturant. Food was fantastic and came quickly. We've booked in for Mothers Day and we can't wait.

Really beautiful public house. We came here with our 14 month old and parent friends who had their 13 month old. The pub is very roomy so our daughter could run around and say hello to everyone. The food was really nice and wholesome and tasty. I had the peri peri half chicken which was extremely tasty. The staff were welcoming and the service was excellent. Would highly recommend a visit if you're passing by or live in the area.

I’ve always loved the white bear. In recent years it did go downhill after the decent management left those guys are the ones that also run Botley Hill farmhouse. They apparently couldn’t really cope with two venues. Botley Hill farmhouse is also Very good. But coming back to the white bear, it’s just been completely refurbished. When I heard that it had been refurbished, I was worried they would’ve ruined the entire character of the place, but after a bit of mental adjustment, I see that they’ve done a marvellous job with it all the nice little nooks that used to exist are still there but there’s a lot more space. What’s more? The menu is really good now. The food is top-notch.

So unbelievably tasty. Couldn’t resist the triple roast as I hate deciding what I want so this was perfect for me. £26 for pork, beef and chicken and all cooked so deliciously and differently🤤 though wish the pork had crispy crackling! Plenty of trimmings too. Genuinely one of the nicest roasts we’ve had in a while. Plenty of parking and we only waited 20 mins for a table as we didn’t reserve on a Sunday afternoon. We had a drink at the bar as we waited so time flew by.

I had a wonderful Monday evening meal with my wife . The ambience was really lovely. We really enjoyed the food and hosting by Adam and Ellie . A lot of thought and consideration was given to us as diner’s. Adam is a manager that deserves a lot of praise for his very friendly approach and dedication to his guests . The food was very good and the dining area was wonderful with a beautiful view outside . Please try the beetroot and rosemary hummus as a starter and also the Camembert soufflé. Both were delicious. I like to give praise where it is due and the White Bear is well deserving of such . This venue was always a great place to visit and eat previously but we can honestly say that after its refurbishment it has kept its tradition along with a fantastic new atmosphere that really made it enjoyable. Well done to all at the White Bear .

As always, great food and service at the White Bear in beautiful surroundings. We booked for a large group for a birthday last week and had a perfect time. Special shout out to Karen who looked after all of us!

I've been to the white bear many times before but yesterday was ny first time after they refurbished it. Food was good. Service was ok, nothing special, felt a bit rushed to order as they would come and check all the the time even though we asked for a few more minutes to decide. Atmosphere was the downside for me. Being a grade 2 building the place used to have a lot of character and it was a big part of the experience. Now it just feels like any other chain country pub so it's a bad bit sad. It's like going to a whetherspoons, it's ok but it looks and feel like any other whetherspoons, has no character like it had before. Not sure is worth going back as I have mamy other other pubs alike a lot closer.

Great 1st visit. Service was perfect. Trio of Roast was humongous. All meats cooked very nicely especially the beef. Only downside was £6 for 4 cauliflower florets with cheese! Expect a bigger portion for that price. We will be back

Impressive roast in a refreshed setting retaining the atmosphere of a classic british pub The food quality is great, service accommodating, and service charge is not added by default. The White Bear nails a five star rating for me 👍 £26ish for triple roast (beef, pork, and chicken) and £19ish for pork roast. Loads of parking. Really clean.

Superb evening at the White Bear. Incredible service from Karen who could not do enough to make our evening special. Thoroughly recommend the venue. Great experience.

We went for lunch on Sunday, taking our son and daughter-in-law. There has been a huge transformation since the last time that I visited. The restaurant is light and airy, with views over the countryside. The food was plentiful and tasty, service excellent and there was a lovely buzz about the place. We will definitely be back! Oh, and the ale was really well kept too!

Poor service from a mature older lady that had a chip on her shoulder, rude to my mother. When we paid she just took our Payment and walked off! Rude. Slow service food wise...good was ok. Expensive for what you get! When leaving I asked to speak to the manager, the girl I spoke to said she was the manager, I told her my thoughts, didn't seem interested!

Had a lovely lunch with kids on a Saturday. Food was great (and kids menu) most of us went for the fish and chips and desert options were brilliant. Kids had the sausages and mash. All tasted fab. The place has been done up nicely, bright and welcoming.

Tried to book a table online which apparently is the best way to book according to their telephone message! Email to say they will confirm shorty. How long do you have to wait? Waited so far 3 hours and still waiting for a confirmation. I may need to make a booking elsewhere! Tried phoning several times but they don’t answer the phone either!!

I can't recommend this pub enough, the food was outstanding! The best fillet steak I've even had! The rest of my party all thoroughly enjoyed their meals too. Great ambience and attentive staff. I think we've found our new favourite pub!

Very poor service, waiting way over an hour for food just to be told they made a mistake with tables and have to take order again. Online menu is different to the menu you’re given. Used to be such a good place.

We had a family meal and enjoyed our time at the white bear. The atmosphere was very pleasant with great quality of food and staff that are attentive and well skilled in customer care. I realise the white bear staff are an expert team, but I must mention one in particular. Emma who made my 92 year old father in law very happy by posing with him for a selfie for his very own Facebook page. Thanks again white bear, until we meet again, which we will do. It has been sometime since we last visited and we love the renovation. Took mum and her friend for a Sunday roast and my good, what a roast. Have all walked out feeling very well fed. Our server Karen (with a K) was absolutely outstanding. A great asset to the White Bear. Looking forward to a return visit. We won't leave it so long next time

We had a beautiful meal. The menu is extensive and interesting and a real.cut above. This is much more than a usual gastro pub. The food is so much better, beautifully cooked and presented. Very special.

It's not as rustic and warm as it once was, but the staff are great and the food is class. More elbow room in the main dining area, but there are still some quiet corners by the fire if you're wanting one.

Cutest country pub, cosy vibes. The service is amazing, the best I've received in a long time, so friendly and welcoming. Special shout out to Maddie who was so lovely and dealt with my many sauce requests! The food is fab, great portions and very yummy. Couldn't recommend this place more.

As a family, we come here often. Unfortunately our New Year’s Day / birthday celebration was very disappointing. Staff were almost absent, with us waiting a half hour to even pay at the end. Our waitress forgot our order, then gave us the wrong food. It all felt chaotic and disorganised. A shame, as we usually love the pub but concerned that it’s lost its charm and the spark that we come here for.

Lovely pub , nice drinks , pleasant waiting staff, service was struggling being a busy Sunday Afternoon, (Understandable! ) Our group of 22 , Main issue our meals had to be Pre Ordered from your set menu 4 weeks before. Lots served really late , lots food was tepid or over salted , I can only speak about 6 persons who felt the same . Roast dinner and fish chips

Had a fantastic Christmas dinner here on Christmas Day there were 17 of us. The food was delicious, great service and lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend it!

Great meal at the white bear spontaneously on a Saturday night. We had the steaks and a lovely creme brulee dessert. My steak was blue but they rectified it immediately. Service was wonderful too. Would definitely revisit

We visited last week with a large group for our annual 'Friendsmas' and this was easily our best yet. The food and service was amazing. The team went out of their way for our group despite also having a full restaurant and even gave us a separate room for us to enjoy the evening after dinner for some drinks. I live in Epsom but will be recommending this little gem to my family as a new country pub destination. Thank you Adam and the team!

Had fish cakes quite dry and tasteless not enough hollandaise sauce and spinich not wilted down enough so very disappointing and not cheap,don't think I will return .

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here yesterday with my friends (large group booking). The food, cocktails and service (thanks Amin , hope I got the spelling right and the bar lady with glasses) was amazing. My highlight for me was the crackling on the pork roast, absolutely delightful.

Went here for a Christmas do recently and was really and was really impressed with this restaurant. Food was really tasty and all came out together. The staff were great throughout the day and the rest of the pub looked really nice too. Drinks were reasonably priced and service was pretty quick too. Would certainly go again, either for a nice family meal or for a similar Christmas do next year.

Over the years my friends and I have been to many pubs for our Xmas get together, the food here is hands down the best of all of them and the staff were superb too! Bar manager Adam was really friendly and made us feel welcome throughout! Will definitely be back!

Edited to 4* upon return - much improved Beautiful atmosphere and a perfect country pub if you just fancy a drink. Let down by the food which was underwhelming. Potato Gratin looked like yesterday's leftovers (fully grey) and the ceaser salad for some reason arrives unmixed, salad leaves on sides have no dressing etc I want to give it 4* but with the food as is it gets out competed by similar pubs. Just want a drink? Come here

My first experience of the white bear was a year ago and I was not impressed. I had the fish pie Which was not great - Very little fish, mainly mash and not much taste. This evening, I took my daughter there for a birthday dinner, wanting to give The restaurant another try. I had the spinach and mushroom pizza Which was awful. The spinach was definitely frozen, There were about four thin slithers of mushroom. The centre pizza base was soggy and the outer rim was hard. Pizza Express would’ve done far more superior job. I left half of it and didn’t bother with a pudding. My daughter had one of their burgers and a sticky toffee pudding Which she didn’t complain about. My conclusions are this is a rip-off restaurant, it is by no means a professional restaurant and I will never be going there again nor will I be recommending friends. It’s a Saturday night and it wasn’t full, but the service was so slow. One of the waitresses looked as if she’s been dragged out of a laundry bag - Her clothes were crumpled, She was running late for work and just threw something on. In my opinion, this was a shere waste of money which I resent having to pay for such inferior food. I left feeling cheated. I had to make myself something else to eat when I got home, cause I was hungry!

Service was a bit slow but the portions were very generous and the food good. Recently rejuvenated but retains the old English pub feel.

We ate the roast dinner at the white bear and our kids had the kids burger and pizza. Roast was excellent, I had the mixed meat and wife had beef, both were tasty and unlike other roasts the meat was the star. For dessert we have the pumpkin brulé and sticky toffee, both were good although the brulé was perhaps a little dense. The kids meals were substantial and also came with hummus and crudités which was a nice touch It gets busy on Sunday so make sure to book.

Just right for celebrating a birthday. A really lovely wholesome meal. All plates looked great, everyone made the right sounds about the flavours. The service was cheerful and attentive, they were experienced too, they knew how to look after the almost-80s and the under 10s. The kids activity packs were a smashing touch. Couldn’t fault any of it, except the time just disappeared! So the only improvement is if you could pause time next time we visit so we can enjoy your hospitality for longer.

amazing roast dinner, went for the trio and it was plenty big with 3 lovely meats. Gravy and Yorkshire both excellent. Service was great and toddler friendly.

We came for Sunday lunch yesterday and was served by Emma who was really friendly and attentive. We had the beef and chicken roast which were both superb. Beef and chicken cooked perfectly and potatoes fluffy and crunchy and veggies were delicious. The large Yorkshire pudding was best I’ve eaten. Great decor to, thank you we will definitely be back.

Booked a Sunday birthday meal for 4 (a 1 year old and a vegan in the group). The staff were excellent, took our orders early and checked on us quite alot to make sure we were happy with the service. (I could only take pics of the mocktails as the baby took my phone). We had the childs roast (enough to satisfy a small adult), the beetroot Wellington (quoted - the best roast option ever), sirloin steak with chunky chips & the trio roast. Everything from the yorkies, meats and potatoes were cooked to perfection, portion size was perfect, clean plates all round. For dessert we had the brownie, crumble and the star dessert...vegan chocolate orange cake with honeycomb ice cream. Finished off with a lovely black coffee. The location is lovely, the pub is beautiful with plenty of parking.

Lovely pub with integral restaurant. Choice of eating in the bar (where we did with puppy) or restaurant. Good selection of drinks and good menu. We ordered the fish and chips and the steak pie. Both dishes were good. However at £9.95 the pudding was very small (too small - see photo).

They have done a really good job with the refurbishment here. Excellent Sunday lunch and very friendly and efficient service. Only point for improvement, only two light coloured cask ales: where was Gravity?

We had a group of 4 celebrating one of the group’s 80th. birthday. The staff were so helpful, going to great lengths to help the “birthday girl” have a wonderful celebration. The food was excellent and although the pub was very busy, we were not given the feeling of being rushed. We would certainly book again!

Service very slow, no wine glasses available even though it wasn’t too busy, my steak and ale pie was barely edible due to the salt content being ridiculously high, l don’t intend to revisit unless the standards are raised.

Remote pub, reached via tiny country lanes. Lovely food and service. Loos spotless (always a good sign). However, I'd avoid in summer as it would b packed inside and outside.
