The Barley Mow in Tandridge

Arrived for lunch Friday 11th April. Not an experience we will repeat. Very very average food. Waited 30 minutes for our plates to be cleared, had to ask for the pudding menu. Then when we were ready to order were informed that the cheesecake we all wanted was not available. Bearing in mind that we were the only people eating inside the service was awful.

We didn’t eat as just stopped for a drink , but a lovely garden and nice atmosphere

Came for Mother's Day lunch having prebooked a table. Had to wait at the bar for 15 minutes before we were shown to our table. We then waited ages for someone to take our drinks order and give us a menu. Our food order was taken 55 minutes after the time of our booking. Staff were friendly and polite but everything was so disorganised. The food when it arrived (roast beef) was nice and plenty of it. Unfortunately this didn't make up for the lack of good service. Extremely loud and hectic environment. Very dissapointing.

Pre booked a table for 6 people over a week ago for Mother’s Day. Upon arrival we waited to be seated where many staff passed us without even acknowledging us. We were finally seated.. in the bar area with a baby! We waited over 25 minutes and after no one asked us what drinks we would like we left. Whilst I appreciate it was busy the service was absolutely dreadful. The place was clearly over booked as we seemed to be shoved in the corner and forgotten about. Menu prices had also been increased which was disappointing to see (clearly this was done to cover the costs of the ‘free’ dessert). The manager barely apologised and done absolutely nothing to try to make the situation any better. Will definitely not be returning.

We had such a lovely Sunday lunch here. The roast was probably the best restaurant roast we've ever had. Everyone was so lovely and the restaurant is a really lovely setting. Would highly recommend.

A wonderful Sunday lunch today - delicious food and good service. It was a birthday lunch for one of our party and they were so helpful with a special desert. We will definitely go back.

Food is fab and service exerllent. The actual place has so much character. Would deferenately recommend with out a doubt. The roast dinner was lovely. Have revisited and food amazing staff lovely and good service

Came here today with the family and we were not disappointed. Booked in the morning for an afternoon table and was all good to go. Very welcoming and was seated straight away. Service was incredible, we had drinks menus and ordered within at least 10 minutes! To add to that we had already looked at the menu before going so pretty much knew what we wanted 😃 ordered the roast dinners and extra vegetables and potatoes - something we really didn't need to do! The amount of food we received was incredible and absolutely delicious, it was a shame we couldn't eat it all so we asked for a takeaway pot. All service was friendly, food was outstanding in our opinion and we will definitely be recommending this to all friends and family... oh and coming back as often as we can!

We came here for lunch, the staff were so welcoming and let us sit where we wanted to. We chose to sit near the beautiful open fire. The pub felt warm and friendly and was very pretty! We got served very quickly and the food was amazing! Highly recommend the homemade pie and fish and chips! The waitress even recommended the best pudding which we all chose the strawberry cheesecake and it was delicious 🤤. We will be coming back very soon!

Food and drinks are great and a good price which is surprising! HOWEVER, the service was terrible, it took 1 hour to get our cheesy chips after ordering and reminding multiple staff members. We did have a good time laughing at how bad the service was though so that's good

Quick early dinner, warm welcoming atmosphere fire lit. Friendly staff and great food - can recommend pie and the burger. Will be back soon.

We turned up to a fully lit pub, people inside being served food and the doors locked! We knocked on the door and even caught the eye of the waitress and another member of staff but were ignored!! My recommendation is to drive the extra 5 minutes to the grumpy mole where you are welcomed with a cracking open fire, amazing food (pies especially) and very welcoming staff. very disappointing seeing a s we were holding our 8month old daughter in our arms in the rain and we’re still ignored.

Can you update your opening hours on Google please. Wet and unfed regards.

Has this pub closed? Tried to visit for lunch twice in the last few weeks and all closed up/no signs of life either time.

We came here for dinner and got the sausage and mash and pie. The sausages weren’t your typical Cumberland but we’re still tasty. We got a couple of deserts and they were delicious. We were there on a Saturday night early and it was nice and quiet, staff were friendly and food was okay!

Had gone for a Sunday roast (or options offered) calamari was selected for a starter, with main course meals of lamb, beef and chicken. We all agreed we have never had calamari that was so melt in the mouth and delicious. The main meals were just amazing. We gave compliments to the chef.

Really enjoyed the pies but food was slow coming out. Lots of staff but very unorganised service. Young staff need better training.

Great staff and excellent food I had a home made chicken and ham pie 🥧 the pastry was amazing very light, I don't know how they managed to get so much meat into it and the cheese cake the best and Great value main course was £16.99 worth every penny

Our car broke down in the area and the highlight of the day was the delicious lunch, lovely staff and tranquil setting. Thank you to all the team for looking after us!

Had a superb Sunday lunch, so thought we would try mid week. Fab Steak and ale pie with light pastry on bottom and top. Delicious meat and gravy. Service was really good. Will be back and recommend.

We were a party of ten and unanimous in our high opinion of the establishment.

Ordered fish and chips but they served it with frise instead of chips was told that customers complained that's why it was changed.

Not brilliant just ok. Friendly and good for a beer but many of the meals on the menu were not available and I wouldn't bother eating here again unless I wanted a simple lunchtime pub meal. Been back more recently for a drink in the garden at the back which was absolutely fine and a nod to the staff who could not have been more helpful.

We went to the Barley Mow for Father’s Day. The food was lovely, and the staff were good. Seems we picked a good time to go at 12pm as it got busy very quickly and we felt a bit forgotten once the mains were done. The only negative was they charged our food twice on the credit card machine, however a quick phone call and it was credited back with an apology, these things happen. It didn’t subtract from a really nice day.

We held my husbands 40th party at the Barely Mow and I was really impressed with how well the event was hosted. Karen and her team were very accommodating. We were able to have private use of the whole venue (which is quite hard to find in the local area). Everything ran like clockwork and as per our requirements, having private use meant we could have a live band. The staff were very helpful and everyone commented on how nice the food was. The chef prepared a selection of hot food including mini curry bowls, burgers, fish and chips and caesar salad. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking to hold a private party.

Stopped here for drinks. Really friendly service and atmosphere. Food looks great but we didn’t eat here ourselves. Large pretty garden and large parking area.

Amazing food, excellent service, great atmosphere, very good value. Sausage and mash was perfect, pie and mash was the best ever had,would thoroughly recommend.

Have been quite a few times recently and the food is really good, keeps getting better and better. The home made garlic mayo is magical

Burnt chicken, bland and disappointing, burger didn’t even come with what it said on the menu!

My first Sunday lunch at The Barley Mow and certainly won't be my last. I am vegetarian and the options were plenty and delicious.

The only problem was when I came to pay by card - they couldn't get an Internet signal for about half an hour!

Cancelled my booking on the same day we were supposed to come in, claiming it was 'an error with their booking system'. Seemed like terrible timing considering I'd booked over a week in advance and even phoned two days before to confirm I could add two more people. You would've thought with those two chances, the pub could've let me know sooner that this 'large private party' was happening. All in all, it just felt like they cancelled my booking to make way for a larger group so they could make more money and they couldn't care less about it.

One of our favourite places for a Sunday roast! Forgot to take pictures! But the meat is unreal, I've had the beef and duo of lamb and both were absolutely delicious, could cut the lamb with a spoon! The roast potatoes, are in my opinion what make a good roast, and these are the best roast potatoes I've possibly ever had! Although on the pricier side, it is definitely worth it! 100% must book ahead to be guaranteed a table. Don't know if it was just me being stupid but couldn't find the kids menu online, but they definitely have one as we have two kids with us, who also enjoyed their meals. The parking is a pain at times, as their car park is very small but should be able to find a spot along the road.

Great pub, with plenty of character and good food options. Prices are a bit steep but food is good. Garlic bread was quite underwhelming. Drinks choice also good Inc non alcoholic beers as well.

We drove from Edenbridge, just to visit the Barley Mow pub. The worst customer service I have experienced for donkeys years. Went into the pub at 11:45 yesterday, for a drink with my wife and 3 year old son. There must be over 20 tables in there, set up for lunches, all empty apart from 1 family having a chat. We walked in, went to the bar and of the 8+ staff members who all ignored us, one lady acknowledged our existence when we went to sit down as she said "do you have a booking?" I said we only want a drink, we had to stand, in an empty pub, until she confirmed we could sit there until 2pm. But we only wanted a drink, so she didn't listen to our requirements. No staff came to the table, so I went over and said, my wife would like a coffee and cake, can I see the desert menu, I was told as we didn't have a booking we can't have the desert menu! I looked over at who i presume was a manager, as he was older and he looked away! So we walked out and had to drive into Oxted town centre. We will never come back to this pub. Terrible service on Mothers Day. If you're not a public house where the public can come in and order a drink four hours after you've opened, don't advertise as a pub. You're a restaurant with back customer service.

Perfect country pub at the end of a glorious walk. Excellent service even when full to the brim with diners on a Sunday afternoon. We sat in the garden which looks like a great suntrap come summer and an excellent Guinness to boot. We will be back.

Visited Saturday evening. Food was excellent my mushroom starter was so tasty. Service was very good the waiter was very attentive. Looks like the new owner is ensuring the restaurant will continue to provide great food. Will definitely be back

Great Sunday roast, lovely atmosphere. We be back. But only for special occasion as quiet exspensive.

Only 4 stars for food as some of the menu options were unavailable. However, quality of the dishes were great and service was excellent. Good selection of beers and log fires for those cold evenings.

Went for New Years Eve Lunch with 5 family members. We all had different main courses and I opted for the traditional Sunday roast beef. The meat itself was nice as were most of the vegetables but much of the broccoli was black and the roast potatoes were so tough that the knife wouldn't even mark them never mind cut them. My daughter in law had the veg roast but had the same problem with her potatoes and like me gave up on them. Having said that I have to say thank you for the excellent service we received while there, just a pity the meal was let down so badly.

Only a quick visit - and our first - but was very impressed with the place. We will return soon so I can provide a more nuanced and detailed review.

Our visit to the Barley Mow for lunch on Dec 27th 2023 was extremely disappointing. It was quieter than we expected, and whilst that's not their fault, it contributed to the lack of atmosphere. The lack of attention but staff didn't help either. Our experience was that the staff have little or no training in running a restaurant. They seem utterly clueless to the needs of customers. We're were not shown to our table, but pointed to it by the girl behind the bar. Once seated, we were not once acknowledged by the waiting staff. After fifteen minutes my wife had to ask if we could order drinks. My fish and chips was plentiful, but as dry as a bone and completely tasteless. Prior to ordering, I heard someone on another table say, "it's all batter and tastes of nothing." I wish I had heeded the warning. The peas looked as though they had been cooked and left standing for hours; shrivelled up and dry. And even the tartar sauce was thick and gloopy. I've never quite seen anything like it. At the end of the meal, despite being the only people left in the restaurant, I had to go to the bar to ask for the bill because the staff were chatting and completely ignoring us. In the past, we have been fairly regularly visitors to the Barley Mow, having been among the first customers when it reopened in March 2021. Our visit this time was bitterly disappointing, and whilst we may visit again on our walks from Caterham for coffee and cakes, it's highly unlikely we would risk wasting our money on a meal again.

Excellent dining experience with a variety of choice for vegetarians. Very well looked after by staff and owners are very welcoming and friendly. Will certainly visit again with friends and family.

Liver and bacon excellent as was the Barnsley chop. Only disapointment was cinnamon in the fruit crumble.

Have visited before and the food was great. New management now and the food was not up to standard. Poor value for money. Small portions that didn't meet the description in the menu. Chips were inedible. Staff didn't seem to care.

Had the Christmas meal this was the worst Christmas Dinner I have ever had! The pigs in blankets actually tasted rancid as if they were off but was told this was not possible. the roast potatoes must have been aunt Bessie's so was unable to eat most of my meal! Had chocolate brownie for desert which was so hard it actually flew off the plate when cutting it had obviously been put in the microwave for too long to warm. Did complain about my meal but no notice taken of me. Will not be eating here again !

Came for drinks and chat with friend weekday lunch time a second time. Warm welcome and accommodating caring team. Loved the food. Will definitely be coming here regularly.

We came here 3 weeks ago and it was excellent staff included, went again last night 4/11/23 and was so disappointed, they seem to have got rid of there friendly staff and manager also the cook as food was pretty poor , a shame as we had recommended this pub to family for a birthing celebration, let’s hope you sort your pub out and get back your old staff and manager because all I can say is Maria ran a tight ship with excellent hard work . Also a lot of regulars could be heard moaning about new layout and atmosphere.

Had a family gathering of 12 people . Could not fault the service, food and atmosphere. Nothing too much trouble . All very happy.

When your child has a life threatening food allergy eating out can feel like a game of Russian roulette…but not here. The staff are understanding and knowledgeable and we’ve always had a great experience-my son being able to eat “safe” ice-cream for pudding was a huge bonus!

We always read other dinners reviews when choosing a place to eat seeing a rating of 4.5 seemed ok but sadly not the case it’s a pub serving pub food in a room just off the bar area and is very basic and noisy, we were served quickly but when a basket of bread was served we had no plates and very little butter , the mains came in a reasonable time but the only fresh cooked item on the plate was the meat the rest seemed to have been prepared earlier and kept sadly same for pudding very disappointing shop bought and poor quality for the food we had I feel it was overpriced the staff were very pleasant but this is not a fine dining experience with only a pub basic restaurant

I was the DJ at this lovely Pub for a 60th birthday party, the staff were amazing, brilliant customer service and the Management Team were very warm and friendly. A place where you can go on a date or just with friends to have nice meals and a good assortment of drinks.

The food was really good, and reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and welcoming. It's a very quiet country pub. Perhaps some low level outdoor music would have made it better.

Had lunch here twice now and both times did not disappoint. Both the food and staff are lovely, chef really knows his stuff and the staff are really friendly. Clean atmosphere and lovely decor.

The Barley Mow is a charming, beautiful pub. I went for Sunday roast and had the best dinner. The food was so delicious. The wait staff was attentive and helpful with my child with a food allergy. After dinner, we went out and relaxed in the lawn chairs while our kids played Connect Four. I highly recommend this pub.

We popped in for a quick lunch last week. It was our first time to the Barley Mow and we had a lovely time. The service was excellent - friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious - a good selection, smaller and larger options go. The decor is gorgeous. We will definitely be going back.

Two lovely meals at the Barley Mow in less than a week, both to celebrate family birthdays. A delicious, tender roast lamb Sunday roast and trimmings followed by a relaxing Friday lunchtime with a very generous portion of local ham egg and chips. Great food and service as always. Also very thoughtful about advising the best route into the bar for my disabled mother when I made the booking. Many thanks we'll be back again very soon.

The roast i had was amazing but my daughter had one of their burgers an she didn't really enjoy it an we waited an hour for the food to arrive whilst the family sitting opposite us had there's in 20 minutes or so I'd like to assume it wasn't because we were the only family who had non white people with us but you never know

Lovely pub! Went here for the first time in ages to attend a colleague‘s leaving do and the food and drink were great plus the bar staff were really friendly and attentive.
