The Wheelwright Inn in East Devon

Decided to switch it up and go out for Christmas Day dinner this year and we are all very glad we did. I had the French onion soup, rolled turkey dinner and homemade chocolate brownie and everything was cooked perfectly and so much flavour. My husband has been a chef for over 15 years and could not fault anything. Once we arrived we were shown to our table, and the staff were so friendly and looked really happy to be there which always makes the experience better. Our 2 children really enjoyed trying to find the elf that was hidden and received a sticker and chocolate which completely made their day! After our dinner we stayed for a couple drinks and ended up talking to the chef, so friendly and thanked him for our dinner, we have now booked again for a meal in the new year for 12 of us and booked again for Christmas next year! Definitely recommend!!

Lunchtime Christmas Day we gathered here for a family Christmas lunch. When we arrived we were shown to our reserved table, the food was already pre-ordered. The staff here were really great they were friendly and attentive, the best part of the experience. The variety of starters were served, I had carrot and coriander soup, was nice but served with four triangles of thin dry white bread. Most of us went for the traditional turkey option.  It was disappointing on so many levels, the focal point of the meal was the turkey. This was was a thick square piece of meat, wrapped in bacon and stuffed with some creamy filling. It was dry in texture and difficult to cut. Some of vegetables were slightly under cooked for my liking, Yorkshire puddings were soggy and the gravy was watery. The portions were rather generous, heavily populated with roast potatoes. The cost of a two course meal was £72 per adult and £50 for children, drinks were extra, not even a glass of fizz. The drinks we had, a pint of beer and larger was £5 each. For the two of us the bill was £152 excluding tip, rather expensive in view of the quality, appeciate it was Christmas Day, but was not worth it. We all found it a bit chilly in the pub, the fire did not generate much heat. The gents toilets were a bit of a disgrace, one of urinals was full and spilling on to the already sodden floor. The other urinal was partially blocked and the hand dryer was not working.

We booked for 8 adults, our pre Christmas family gathering. Upon arrival we found it to be really cold and non atmospheric, no Christmas tree and l don't remember any decorations, no music, even the serviettes were cheap and cream! The food was awful, one daughter had the nut roast, had 3 mouthfuls and left it, my son tried it and pulled a face. Those who had a roast found the sprouts were like bullets, the carrots almost as bad, the roast potatoes l imagine barely saw the oven and just resembled boiled ones. I could go on and on!!!! The only two enjoyable meals were the fish and chip ones. The staff were however pleasant and attentive. Finally please buy some WD40 for the main door, the constant creaking was so annoying!!!!

We had a really lovely meal out with the family, wonderful roast dinner and great service. Would definitely recommend.

This is the shadow of what it used to be. Saturday evening, only tables near bar occupied. Restaurant in darkness. Food not great, even peas hard and cold. Fish batter soggy. It used to be the go to pub when I lived locally.

Not been for a while. The establishment has a good reputation and rightly so. They are doing a good job given that they are trying to be a desirable location to visit and profitable for the owners too. The staff were busy bunnies and did a good job under the circumstances. Our meals were very nice but one suggestion: 'slightly less food with a little more variety on the plate' and BANG! Thank you.

Nice pub restaurant with a lot of charm,especially the thatched bar.generous plate of traditional grub and a warm welcome.dogs welcome.

Stopped of for refreshments at lunchtime. Friendly staff and we'll stocked bar. Very clean and welcoming

Shame. The food for a Sunday Roast was not up to par. The veg was undercooked, missing Yorkshire pudding and the meat was not as good a cut as I was expecting. The potatoes were a bit hard as though they had been hanging around under a heat lamp. As I said... shame.

Based on the reviews we were looking forward to the Sunday lunch. Very disappointed on the day. Veg was very hard and beef tough and meal was cold. Other tables around us making similar comments. Lots of food left on plates. Won’t be returning

What a fabulous place. Excellent service. Excellent food. Excellent value. The only downside…. there was so much on my plate for the roast dinner I couldn’t finish it. Gave it a good go though!! Obviously all cooked fresh. We will be returning before our holiday finishes.

We all had different food and we all enjoyed what we had service was great and quick and the girls very polite

This traditional English Country Pub provides an excellent range homemade food. The service & quality were of a very high standard and comes highly recommended

Had a great meal here. Sunday lunchtime, so very busy but great service and food. They were really good for gluten free, bringing me g/f bread and coming back to double check on things. Def recommend.

Amazing burgers but disappointed that the pub is no longer really a pub with little atmosphere- even the bar is set up as a restaurant. Maybe a sign of the times but a real shame as doesn’t feel like you can just pop in for a few drinks and doesn’t appear to be used by locals, just those on holiday and passing through.

Booked a table at the last minute for an evening meal after competing at Wiscombe Park Hillclimb, ate in the bar & had what might possibly be one of the best burgers I've had, very good indeed! Ice creams were a bit average, but never mind.

3 stars for quite pricy food ,one starter for 10 pounds ? Yes,food was tasty ,but still...

Sorry to say not a good one. The service and the meal did not live upto reviews. My wife had a crab salad and found shell in it. My meal too! The spices over powered the beef which left a bad taste. The best thing was the free bread. So will not be visiting again if we are in these parts. Not worth the money!

Good choice of ales, recommend Jail ale 4.5% , dog friendly, lots of outside seating in the sunshine but near the road, wide choice of specials, but not much choice on the normal menu unless you want burgers, they used to have a wider choice a couple of years ago, the Katsu curry was to die for, and the staff would accommodate any likes or dislikes on the menu

We came across the beautiful pub while visiting Seaton. Went on Saturday evening. Absolutely stunning food! Cooked to perfection, we had the garlic mushrooms & mozzarella sticks to start, beer battered fish and chips, and the wheelwright burger... OMG it was divine. The flavours in the burger were sensational! I could taste every ingredient that was in there! Price was reasonable for the food, honestly well worth a visit!!!! We will be back on our next trip!

Lovely country pub, walked in and was greeted with a very cheery welcome from the young lady behind the bar. Ordered a beer (which the bar maid was very knowledgeable about) lovely pint that was very well kept and presented. The food was really tasty. I enjoyed a special board, pulled pork baguette, which at £12 was exceptional value. My wife had the burger, which was really tasty, and again, good value. I have knocked 1 star off of the atmosphere. This is only due to storing waste cooking oil in containers that sit on the show in the car park. Other than this, it's an excellent place to eat and the staff very pleasant and helpful.

Excellent food in a traditional pub atmosphere, accompanied with a great range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Food is cooked to order and is well worth the wait.

Wow! Came across this place by accident following a trip to Weymouth and looking for a sunny lunch stop. Ordered from.main menu, chicken burger for myself. Amazing! Partner had meat burger with pulled pork. Amazing! Sides all Amazing too. Service faultless. Wish we were nearer!

Absaloutly awesome place I was staying on the beach for a night In a motorhome . Was looking for food , sadly pub had stopped serving so cant comment on the food But the staff where asweone and the atmosphere was very friendly.. Highly recommended this lovely old school pub

It is a small pub, with limited seating for Dining and so would recommend booking. During our recent visit on a Saturday night, I encountered a mixed experience. The staff were notably friendly and accommodating. There were limited menu options which included fish specials and unfortunately some of it was unavailable despite the early hour of the day. The kids meal could do with a kids burger as well as the vegan option they offer. The food itself was nice 👍

The food was extremely fresh. They informed that all their produce are local and fresh. The Cod was very fresh as well. Will be back definitely.

Service service service! From the moment we called to book until walking out the door these guys had it nailed. We had the Sunday roast and the salmon, both were delicious and I highly recommend this pub!

Really enjoyed the authentic setting complete with a thatched bar.. small lounge bar, food excellent and freshly cooked whitebaitwith chips and salad.

Excellent service, food and drinks in an authentic venue. Salmon and White bait menu selections were cooked perfectly.

We booked for a birthday meal 3 weeks in advance and received a phone call just half an hour before we were due to arrive by a member of staff who is a personal friend so obviously the owner couldn’t even be bothered to call us himself! informing us they would be closing early…we were lucky enough at a moment’s notice to get booked nearby in at the kingfisher and had a lovely meal…but this is no way to treat locals who keep you in business during these winter months and needless to say we won’t be returning

What a delight - stumbled on this pub/restaurant driving around New Year’s Day looking for somewhere open - and food was a definite step above typical, all absolutely delicious !!

me and my family have traveled down to go have our christmas lunch at the wheelwright and i have to say that it was the best meal we have ever had! delicious turkey which was wrapped in perfectly cooked bacon, it was delightful! the portions were perfect and the presentation was unreal! we can tell that the chef puts time and effort into every meal that gets sent out! definitely will be coming back more regularly

Was looking forward to a lovley Xmas dinner very dissatisfied poor service poor food we ordered a dessert for 4 unfortunately we were told there was only 3 !! Bits of twigs were inserted into our puddings very odd we definitely won’t be returning complete rip off

Wonderful food, friendly service. Went as a four, absolutely excellent food great selection on the menu and a large specials board. Three had the fish which was very well cooked and presented, one had the wheelwright burger which was huge and very tasty. All round excellent

Absolutely superb Sunday roast here! Roast chicken was a large breast quarter, my husband had a really tasty beef. 5 veg, homemade Yorkshire puds, lashings of rich gravy. Most importantly, it was served piping hot - I can't stand food which arrives just warm, then you have to bolt it down in a hurry before it gets cold. Well done, chef! As well as excellent food, the pub had 3 good quality real ales on tap. The roast lunch price was a couple of quid cheaper than another local pub. Highly recommended!

I booked a table for 9 people, on Wednesday for tonite, (sunday) so plenty of time, it was to celebrate my daughter and nieces birthdays, they had my phone number, we got there on time and were told they didn't have any chips (which the kids wanted) and only a few steaks, so we had to leave, it would of been nice to of had a courtesy phone call about this, it was very disappointing, just lucky we found somewhere else and we're able to have the steak meals we wanted and really enjoyed it.

Great restaurant with very friendly, welcoming staff. Not the cheapest, but we were happy to spend a bit more for such great quality food and excellent service.

Booked for 8 adults 4 kids aged 2 to6 and a 1 yr old. Still here as i write this. Fantastic food. Amazing hosts, couldnt do more for us from joining tables to supplying a bottle of milk for the little one. 6 stars if I could.

As always brilliant service and food ! I came there as always for my birthday. Landlord Sebastian gave me a bottle of Prosecco for free for my birthday what was really nice and made me feel special. Me and my partner order steaks. They were AMAZING! Full of flavour. The best pub around

My friends and I had an amazing time in the pub. The landlord Rob made the whole experience even better. A 30th birthday we won't forget. 10/10

Guess the chef was off the night I was there as my confuit duck was not good. The whole dish was reheated except the asparagus which was cold in the middle. My roast sweet potatoes were a watery mush. Worse than the food was the waiter's reaction when I remarked I couldn't eat it and explained quietly why not. In a loud disparaging voice he told me in the 4 years he'd worked there no-one ever complained about the duck. The small room fell silent as he walked off. No apology and left my food on the table. He did eventually come back and take my order for chips which were lovely.

Had lunch here several times during our recent stay. Food always good, with varying specials available. Service is always efficient and pleasant.

Just had an excellent meal at the Wheelwright. We asked for a couple of changes to the menu and nothing was too much trouble to accommodate. Fabulous friendly people too. Wish we were not leaving tomorrow as would definitely return. Thank you for a lovely evening

Made a last minute decision to come here on the way back from our holiday and we're so glad we did. Lovely atmosphere as soon as you walk in, absolutely loved the interior along with the thatched roofed bar. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Plenty of options to choose from but we decided to go for the vegetarian roast and the chicken and wild mushroom tagliatelle. Will hopefully be coming back soon!

Stopped at Colyford whilst riding the Seaton to Colyton Tramway. We'd booked ahead here for Sunday lunch having read the favourable reviews. Excellent food at very reasonable cost. Possibly one of the best, and certainly the biggest, cod & chips this reviewer has ever enjoyed. Recommended.

Have drove past this beautiful old thatched pub many times over the years and always wanted to go there but never got around to it. Today we visited and the whole experience was excellent. Characterful pub, warm friendly welcome from the landlord and the young barmaid. Excellent reasonably priced drinks and beautiful tasting and well presented food. The Thai fishcakes were the best fishcakes we had ever tasted. Definitely will return soon

Fantastic lunch - best pub Sunday roast I've had!

A lovely old pub with a good atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was lovely, we had the chilli pork tacos which were really tasty (just the right amount of chilli !). Will definitely pop in again when we are in the area.

The pub has a very nice outside seating area next to the main road with easy vehicle access. My pint of Jail Ale had a lot of floaters indicating that the pipes were in dire need of a good clean.

Visited today with our two small children and sat outside. Staff were lovely and the food was absolutely delicious, the best we have had out for a long time. The kids meals were great value with ice cream included and really yummy fresh stuff.

Lovely little pub. Wasn’t expecting THAT menu, some great choices!! Great service. Reasonably priced - apart from the steak at £30 - this is expensive for an 8oz sirloin.

We went with a large group that was 50% kids under 5 and it was great. The staff put up with a lot of noise and chaos (we did try and keep the kids somewhat civilised but...) and we're patient and attentive - luckily, due...

Walked in on Sunday asked if they could fit me and the wife and dog in and yes they did . Brilliant couldn't have done more food good as well

Went for an evening meal around 6.30pm we were shoved in a room on our own at the back I had salmon and my boyfriend had fish and chips I felt hard done by, mine was tiny with s few potatoes his was double the size with tons of chips The waitress seemed a bit flustered

Fantastic pub that we came across whilst having a trip on the Seaton tramway which was a five minute walk from the station. Called in for Sunday lunch and the food and service was excellent. Have since been past in the car and all commented how nice this place was and so tempted to return.

My Husband, myself and mother in law came across this beautiful place. We stopped for dinner and we had a delicious meal. Food and service were excellent. Would definitely come here when visiting Devon again.

Sat outside here in the late afternoon sunshine on a couple of occasions recently whilst on holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed relaxing here, the beer was good, didn't eat so can't comment on the food.
