Popped in here on an ad-hoc detour to get something to eat & drink (5pm ish). Building looked like an old fashioned type of place and advertised food outside the front door. Parking in the old stable courtyard around the back. Tight bar, low ceilings but offered good ales. The chef spotted as and told us that if we wanted food, Stew and Dumplings were fresh and a special of the day. Very much a locals pub, bar flies were friendly, TV on with no sound (News) and best of all. NO MUSIC and could have a conversion without shouting over any noise. Grub was bang on (Stew, dumplings, mash and veg) and a massive portion. £8 quid. Mrs. had Scampi, a mountain of chips and a lorry load of peas which she said was really good. Also £8 quid. Great pub, great grub, well poured beer and nice welcome surroundings. Rough and ready, no frills good honest place.

Went for Sunday lunch to see what it was like under the new management. Things didn't start brilliantly to be honest. Waited for a bit without a menu, eventually asked if we'd seen the menu to which we replied we hadn't so one was brought over (basically a chalkboard that I think everyone shared between them). Asked if there were starters and was given the starters menu which consisted of 2 starters , cod goujons and a proscuitto platter. No soup, no pate , no garlic mushrooms , a couple of pretty odd options for a Sunday lunch in winter really. Anyway ordered one of each and a Sunday roast each , mine with beef and gammon and wife's just with Gammon. Starters arrived and the best I can say is they were ok. My cod goujons were 4 small , what struck me as frozen cod sticks (like fish fingers) on top of some token lettuce. No mixed leaves, no salad dressing just some lettuce, the worst salad accompaniment to a starter I have seen in a long time. The wifes was ok, just a bit of an odd starter really as previously mentioned but fine for what it was. Anyway finished those and then the main arrived and here is where things get tricky because there was a lot good about it but the meat was a real disappointment. I'll keep it short, the veg (broccoli , carrots, cauli, parsnips) was lovely, obviously fresh and cooked to perfection , the roasts were lovely as well , cooked perfectly. The problem was the meat. What should be the star of the show on a Sunday lunch was incredibly disappointing. For a start there was hardly any. I got one small slice of beef and one small slice of gammon and that was it. Wife had 2 small slices of gammon. I mean come on, really? The beef was overcooked (not in the slightest bit pink) and tough. The gammon was pretty tasteless, just struck me as a not very good quality gammon joint. We've had far more meat and better cooked / quality meat everywhere else we've been recently. Is 2 small slices of meat the norm these days on a pub Sunday roast lunch? Definitely got more than that at Red Sails over the bridge and also Memories in New Holland and even a little cafe in Cleethorpes that charge £7.50 for a Sunday roast and you get a lot more meat than we got on this occasion. Anyway on the basis of what we experienced we won't be back which is a shame really. As far as I'm concerned the food has gone downhill compared to under the previous management and they seriously need to look at their choice of starters and offer things like soup or pate etc and to be honest the choice of desserts wasn't particularly inspiring either (no cheesecake for example). I don't like being critical but I have to be honest , could we have said something at the time, yes probably although when asked at the bar when there are quite a few people about I didn't feel comfortable doing that really. At least by writing a review hopefully the establishment can consider what I've said and make some improvements, if they feel my complaints are justified of course. The staff seemed friendly enough and certainly made us feel welcome, it was just the starters and the meat that let it down , sorry but I'd need to see evidence of a big improvement in those departments before I'd consider going for Sunday lunch here again.

Great pub, a proper pub that serves good food. We were away on business, didn't have a clue on where to eat but this place is just a little gem. Good friendly service, very polite and great banter from the very young lady who served us. The food was really good, we both ordered the Rib eye steak, very good indeed, cooked exactly how we wanted and real proper chips - some of the best we have had in a while. We both ordered a pudding, the Treacle sponge was outstanding, one of the best I have had, very well complemented with Vanilla Ice cream. It is a pub, the décor could do with a refresh, but what a little gem - Thank you for serving us - top dollar.

Treated my kids to an evening meal out and this place didn’t disappoint. Their kids menu has all the usual necessities (nuggets, pizza, sausages) and they were good sized meals. Nuggets were decent home-cooked ones which went down a storm. Reasonably priced for good sized meals, though could do with more vegetarian options. I had a fish dish instead. Really polite waitress who complimented the kids on good behaviour and offered them different drinks choices when they were indecisive. Thanks Wheatsheaf for a well earned treat tonight!

My friend and I had a meal at the wheatsheaf last month and it was very nice so we decided to go back again today. Big mistake. The bar person asked if we were eating which we were. She told us to sit down and she would come and take our drinks order. After waiting 10mins my friend thought she would just order at the bar. She went up to the bar and the same person that had told us she would take our order ignored her and went on to serve someone else who just walked in! The place wasn’t over busy so we can only assume they didn’t want custom. We promptly left and went across the road were the service, food and drinks were excellent. We won’t be going back to the wheatsheaf

Lovely fresh home made food. No Brake Brothers plastic wrapped portions here. Took a while to dish up but the pub was buzzing on Coronation Day early evening. Small price to pay for hot tasty grub in great portions. Excellent proper chips, home made coleslaw, superb steak pie. Hunters chicken a tad dry as other reviews have said but overall the quality of the food is a cut above others who purport to do home made when in fact it is home cooked and there is a difference. Next time Sunday lunch. Can't wait !

We were given a warm welcome in this popular pub. The food is fresh and the beer is well kept. We enjoyed the leek and potato soup served with ciabatta and a caesar salad which was offered with a choice of two dressings. The bar staff and regulars were chatty and friendly, as was the pub dog who came for a scratch. The log burner was a welcome addition to the lovely atmosphere on a cold February day.

If you aren’t a local resident or known to the pub then don’t bother going in because that is the feeling you receive, just been for kids Christmas night… started off okay but as other tables we seated they was offered food menus for adults, not offered to our table, also as the evening went on all other tables got asked for more drinks and everything okay, not one single check on us,Pay for the 1 drink at the end to be greeted with a non meaning full apology not sure you actually cared what we said and to say we will speak to staff after 12+ years in hospitality management that is some babble you use to pass over the issue without resolving it… My money didn’t feel welcomed in your pub and neither did my family so I won’t return and wouldn’t recommend you, as the wheatsheaf it’s lost it’s spirit from what it used to be. Also I’m sure presents could of been wrapped instead of some crap cellophane bag.. to top it off service is terrible and management don’t care about it or resolve it to a satisfactory level.

We are regulars to the wheatsheaf my partner and I and have recently visited for a Sunday dinner. I must said as lovely as the food was cooked (because it was) there were no vegetables with our Sunday dinner? The portion was small and in all honesty we both left hungry!! It’s unusual last time we came for a meal in general we couldn’t finish it the portion was so big so it was a massive contrast. The service was also slow and if I hadn’t have been for another couple getting up and asking for more drinks I don’t think the staff would have remembered to check on anyone! It’s a shame please know this review is based on the most recent visit every other visit has been spot on! Just perhaps some vegetables would have been nice and more attentive on the drinks….

Decided to give Wheatsheaf pub a try after recommendations and we weren't disappointed. Pub has a cosy setting especially with the fire on, it's a traditional looking pub with good service and very good food. We chose the small eater portions (2 courses for £12.50) husband had liver & onions (first class! With a gravy which included brandy and cream), I had lasagne with small salad & dressing, garlic bread & chips, the whole meal was tasty with tangy cheese on top of lasagne - mmm. Finished off with two sticky toffee puddings. Recommend a visit and we'll definitely be back.

As an advocate of having a Sunday lunch out, the Wheatsheaf was recommended to us by friends who told us it was the "best place to eat in Barton", bold claim! Well i haven't tried all the restaurants in Barton but i was very impressed with the quality of food we consumed at the Wheatsheaf. The pub was busy but the staff were friendly and eager to please. We were sat in the snug which is small and cosy with only 3 tables (never saw the main eating area) this was nice though as my partner and i could just enjoy our food without excessive noise from other patrons. The menu choice was small but as we only wanted Sunday lunch it was perfect, i ordered the pork and my partner had the beef, when the food came out you could tell it was home made. The portion was ample and very filling, meat, roast potatos, mash, cabbage, carrot/swede mash, Yorkshire pudding and a very rich and tasty gravy. What more could you ask for. I would highly recommended this establishment for anyone who wants a good, tasty home cooked Sunday lunch. There were other options on the menu but was very limited, thats why i only gave it 4 stars, we were going to treat ourselves to dessert but the choices were very limited and all were very heavy and we didn't fancy it after a large dinner. The price was i thought reasonable with 2 dinners and a couple of drinks for under £25

We had booked for a table of 11 well in advanced and we were given a menu to pre order what we wanted. When we arrived we ordered our drinks and went up to our table. When the waitress came over we were told that there was only two steak pies left even though we had pre-ordered 3! So this left us feeling very disappointed before we had even received the food. So 1 of our party had to change their choice of meal. When the food came out the portions of steak pie differed in size. All the rest of the meals were very tasty apart from the roast potatoes which were nearly impossible to cut through. The portions on the roast beef dinners which 2 of us had was massive and the beef was absolutely gorgeous, it just melted in your mouth. Upon receipt of our bill we let the waitress know of our disappointment on the couple of issues mentioned but we were not offered any compensation. We will probably be back again in the future but would hope that they up their game next time.

The pork chop and mash was lovely. My wife had the steak and ale pie, which again she loved and the amount of steak was good compared to a lot of other places where you appear to be on rations, just a shame they're cut from a large pie rather than an individual pie, or that's how it seemed anyway but none the less still delicious. The Biscoff cheesecake was huge too, I knew she wouldn't be able to manage a whole piece as did the waitress, as she brought 2 spoons ...both were needed.

We visited the area on our mini honeymoon and we asked some of the locals for recommendations for a nice meal. Almost everyone suggested the Wheatsheaf and so we decided to try it. From walking into the pub to leaving, we felt so welcome. The staff and other customers were so friendly. We decided to have a mixed grill and the beer battered fish and chips. The portions were huge, the food was all freshly cooked to perfection. All fresh, local ingredients. It absolutely wasn't pub grub, it was restaurant quality food. We haven't been to a pub where the barmaid actually comes to the tablle to ask if you want another drink. This was a nice touch and made us feel like we could just relax in each others company. We met the new chef and were able to pass on our compliments to her. We will definitely visit the area again on our anniversary and will 100% revisit the Wheatsheaf. Thank you to all the staff for a lovely evening.

Upon hearing of this pubs glowing reputation we became curious and had to try for ourselves. Ever since we have returned most Saturdays for our pub grub fix.

Visited today and had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken burger and it was honestly the BEST burger i’d ever had. I’ve eaten multiple times with different people and we can all agree they have the most amazing food in the area

We eat here fairly regularly, both as a couple and with other friends and family. The staff are always very welcoming, the food always good with decent size portions, and the real ales are very good - it's cask marqued.

Booked a late Fathers Day meal here for 13 of us, staff were very obliging to fit us all in at such short notice. The service was excellent very friendly staff, the food was truly delicious with a lot to choose from. They also catered for my dad who has Coeliac Disease. 3 of the party were children & they were well catered for too. We will definitely be making a return visit!

Came in today for a try as I’ve heard lot of good things about this place. I am amazed by the food, I had the fish and chips, fish was beautiful and fresh, chips were homemade and incredibly tasty. My friend had sausage and mash, she was impressed with the amount of food that she got given. The sausages are local, the mash was creamy and lump free. All food was piping hot! We will definitely be back as it’s definitely worth the money! The service was wonderful, waitress and bar main were incredibly nice and helpful.Couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Excellent meal, my husband and I visited. We both had soup of the day and I had pork chops salad and chips and my husband had steak. We learned the chef cooking was only 17 years of age. She has just won quite a few awards at college and the food was excellent. The place was packed out and as usual the service was excellent. It was a great meal and we will be back. Definitely a must.

I found this pub in Camera's Good Pub guide hoping to find somewhere for a quick lunch on our way back to Somerset. We arrived at just after 12 noon and the pub was already bustling with locals with many in for lunch. A good sign! They had a good selection of real ales and my Timothy Taylor was first class at a reasonable price. For lunch I had haddock and chips with mushy peas and my friend gammon steak with all the trimmings. Some of the best pub food I've tasted in ages and great value. The lady behind the bar, knowing we had a long way to go, couldn't have been more helpful in ensuring we were served promptly. I wish this pub was near me, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

We popped in hoping for a table, we were qyuckly seated, menus given, drinks ordered. We both had calamari starter, absolutely delicious. The salad wasn't much, few salad leaves. I had the liver and bacon... I was really impressed as its hard to get liver right... Big portions, my husband asked for his steak blue but it came out rare, he finished it so obviously wasn't too fussed. We weren't told about the specials which we saw after we ordered. Staff were lovely and checked back and friendly. Will come back again

Home cooked food served to a very high standard. Cannot fault the Wheatsheaf and we have eaten here on a few occasions. The sunday roast is delicious and was well received by my fussy teenagers who think only I can cook a roast ! The pork belly was divine. The pub is lovely too and the staff and service excellent. Would highly recommend.

The Wheatsheaf served up some of the best lunchtime food I’ve ever had in a pub. My bavette steak was perfectly cooked and succulent. It came with a leafy salad, grilled tomato and deliciously hot beef dripping chips. The staff were friendly, smiling and helpful. Couldn’t ask for more!

Drinks and service good One vegan option which is ‘Korean tacos’ - note they are not tacos they are deconstructed. No real substance that would be worth £20! Not worth it for the vegan options but drinks and service good.

A busy place for golfers in a great location. Lots of parking in a spacious car park. Accessible for everyone. The club house is fantastic with food and drink available for those who want it, including friendly staff members. Fantastic views of the course from the club house. Looking forward to my next visit.

The phone number is defunct and the venue is completely shut despite it being in the middle of their published hours. I suspect that it has closed down.

A little disappointed really, service was really good, but the food average - ordered the chicken kebab which was just okay, not brilliant. But the most disappointing aspect was ordering our dessert, but as we were after 9pm the kitchen had closed. We were late diners, arrived at 8.15 but when we ordered our main we mention we would like a dessert so when we were faced ordering and told, sorry the kitchen is now closed, we were left very disappointed indeed - not good really as the staff should have really come to us, but didn't. Ho hum - we dined out the second evening, great meal locally, far superior food and service.
