On our last day of our holiday with popped into this fish and chip shop, in South Molton, to take back to our holiday cottage. It was very busy, and you had to wait as they cook from fresh, orders can be phoned in if needed ,or ordered on line. . We both had Haddock and Chips, this was the best I had for years, the Haddock was tasty, and there was loads of Chips

An excellent fish and chip shop in the heart of South Molton which provides a takeaway facility as well as an option to eat indoors. They clearly take their culinary responsibilities seriously. I spoke to one of the staff who went to great lengths to tell me about which potatoes make great chips and how to cook them. And, cook them well they do. Likewise with fish, which they buy directly off the boat in Plymouth so it's always fresh. Their batter mix is pleasing - not too heavy or greasy with just the right amount of crispness. They do have a wider menu but I was just there for fish and chips (and will certainly be there again). Very tasty and a happy discovery.

This is why Cornwall should not allow the export of pasties to Devon! A quick lunch and the world's hardest pasty - I thought I'd chipped a tooth. Clearly been in the hot cabinet for several hours too long. Chips were fine, as was the baked potato but the pasty was a disaster. Friendly staff but whoever was serving should have known that this pasty was pasty its best.

This poor fish was battered to an inch of its life, the curry sauce was like water, the large chips well...wasn't large, they didn't put salt and vinegar on the chips (after specifying we wanted it) and charged me an extra £3 for the delivery of something that wouldn't feed a toddler let alone two people. This is £15 I may as well have set alight than buy this takeaway. P.s. I'm from the Midlands - and quite literally from one of the most mainland cities in the UK and if our chippy served this - they'd be closed down. You can practically see the sea from your shop.

There is a sign in the restaurant that states all food is cooked fresh to order. I placed a small order for two people and was told it would be a twenty minute wait. I had my reservations about this rather optimistic timetable and instructed my solicitor to purchase a small area of arable land and hire farmer to plough and till the area, plant a number of rows of seed potatoes and harvest the following year. In the meantime I also hired a small fishing trawler, trained in its use, hired a crew and embarked for the Atlantic with the aim of landing a good catch of cod. Upon my return to land the potatoes were harvested and the cod was in the fridge. It was a toss up which would be ready first: - the supply of the food I ordered at the Welcome Fryer or my own procurement attempts. Come on Welcome Fryer - it's Saturday night, the world and his wife want fish and chips, cooking in such small batches and having only one person serving is not conducive to good customer service. On the plus side the food was tasty but the delay meant that I was now considering whether to go for a full English!

We got takeaway twice from here whilst staying in the area, We really enjoyed the food. My wife is a coeliac so we ordered gluten free. Whilst you can order gluten free online your best bet to ensure they're suitable is to call. The battered sausage was our favourite, although everything we had was good, and would order again. Everything comes in polystyrene boxes, so we did feel a bit bad about the amount of wastage. But definitely enjoyed and would be keen to try more of the menu (gluten free and regular).

Visited the area for lunch while on the way home from a week camping, checked out a few pubs in the area for food and decided that The Welcome Fryer looked the best by a long way. My partner had Cornish Pasty and chips and I had the fish platter, I expected maybe a piece of fish, scampi and a fish cake. Boy I was wrong and in a good way, turns out that the fish platter is 3 large pieces of fish, turns out 1lb of fish, with chips and peas, all for a smidge under £12, definitely a bargain, I wasn't able to eat it all in one sitting so the very friendly staff gave me a take away box so I could take the left overs home , if only this place was closer to home. I would like to say to the owner, that the staff you have working there where the nicest and friendly staff I've been served by in a long time and made the whole experience more memorable, this was a great finale to our holiday. Thanks.

Whilst visiting South Molton I asked a local lady if there was a fish and chip shop in the town where we could have lunch, she recommended the "Welcome Fryer". Wish we hadn't bothered, the fishcake was pathetic and the chips were awful, they were either hard or small scraps and a lot of them were black where they hadn't been peeled properly. Did complain only to be told we should have said something earlier but one look at them and the waitress should not have served them in the first place, we left most of them. Will certainly not be visiting the "Welcome Fryer" again.

In the interval, we went out for a breath of fresh air and saw the chippie was open. We dashed across the road and they were in the process of closing up, but kindly let us in as we didn't want to sit down for a meal. Fresh chips were put in the fryer for us and within a couple of minutes we came out with our food. Visited this establishment on Friday morning at 10.25am for breakfast this was due to the fact that my normal choice EATS cafe was full. On entering the empty restaurant I browsed the menu and like the way the breakfast is per item however this was a good as it got. Once placing my order with a waitress who's been there a long time I was greeted with what do you want. 5mins after placing my order she approaches me again with her awful people skills and tells me she can cook all my items apart from sausage as the fryers were not turned on and would take 10mins to eat. I was shocked when in bold writing at the top of the menu it dates food servers from 10am daily, this was the only smile I had. Once the food was in front of me at 10.50!! It's was food on a layer of grease on a plate!! The hash browns were evidently pale and barely cooked which considering the time she had due to the fryer issue you'd think they'd be spot on as for mushrooms they were shocking. There was no apology or offer of discount or extra item either when I was informed of fryer issue which may have been appropriate. I've lived in this town for the 29 years I've been alive and never have I had such poor food. Due to my time I know the heritage of this building and have great memories of when it was the welcome cafe. Personally they should remove welcome from there name as it's an insult and disrespect to a big and good part of our towns history. I see management reply to these msgs so I hope this is the case. I'm happy to have this conversation face to face with management and maybe as compensation a replacement meal to prove this was just a bad day. However from what I'm told this very much won't happen.

The seafood platter was a selection of breaded seafood - prawns, scallop, cod etc. It was a bit of a lottery what you would get next and frankly all the fish tasted the same but thats to be expected. They were definitely frozen and not hand made! The chips and the salad with home made coleslaw made up for it thoughWe had a bottle of wine. Cheap enough but it was cheap wine. If anyone in my party has had an issue this has been dealt with effectively and quickly. The prices are sensible and easy to understand. Keep up the good work. X

I had a lovely meal at this restaurant, and so did lots of other people judging by the full tables..Instead of having regular fish and chips,I had a mix of battered scallops, plaice and cod pieces, served with chips and a salad. The food was quick to come, served piping hot and utterly delicious.

I always enjoy visiting here, normally treating my children in the school holidays, we come here for lunch. I enjoy eating lovely fish and salad, homemade colslaw, instead of chips at times which is a change. Lots to choose from the menu including breakfast and great friendly staff.

One of the best Sunday carveries that we have experienced, with a wide range of vegetables & meat; welcoming staff, especially Kim & Wendy, nothing was too much bother

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

Bad first (not that bad ..😆) A bit old and dated, dispite the newish tile panelling Batter was nice but a little oily on the fish (soaked into the batter) The good.. HUGE battered fish - (suggest you just get the small one) cooked perfectly Sirloin steak was tender and cooked perfectly (ordered medium) I was pleasantly surprised on the quality, as it's a basic takeaway with a restaurant attached and it was under £20, so no top steak restaurant - but kudos to the chef, best £20 steak I've had, and better than some classier $$$$ places I've been, For that £20 I also got onion rings (perfect), salad - quality greens, few cut up bits of capsicum a couple of mushrooms, tomato, fried tomato too and plenty of chips cooked perfectly and very nice. (but best chips in UK I've had is at Lochgilphead - Scotland) Constructive criticism only - I was VERY happy given the price, Way better than a lot of places I've been to so far in the UK, and would definitely eat the same dishes again. Staff were friendly... This is at the end of the tourist season too. (Oct'24)

Me & my partner came here on 5/9/24 on a very rainy day. We both grabbed a little drink and a treat here and relaxed in the lovely cafe after a long wet walk from Croyde bay. The staff here were wonderful and all really lovely! The millionaires shortbread was the best I’ve ever had and the cheesy chips were delicious! There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, both hot and cold. Really lovely vibes and will definitely come here again!
