The watermill in South Lakeland

I like this place. Up in the Lakes for the day and Windermere is very busy. I regularly use Trip Advisor to scout out those places that ae not always on the route I am taking and I found this place. The food is excellent, the staff are equally as excellent and efficient. It has lovely decor and the car park was pretty easy to find a space in. Hopefully we will be back again on the not to distant future.

The food is great from here! Love the pub. I have stayed over a couple of times too. I would 100% recommend - I just wish it had a nicer lager on draught.

Fabulous pub, we passed by and decided to pop in for tea, well worth it, the pie was amazing, partner said the burger was great, we stayed for the quiz which was hard but fun only £1 a person, we went back the next night and had the pie again, definitely worth a visit if your in the area

We had visited The Watermill Inn a few years ago and I thought a return visit was warranted for Mother’s Day lunch. The pub is very welcoming, nicely decorated and the fires were lit to keep out the March cold. Our food was excellent, as was the service. I had the beef and ale pie which was great , my wife had the Watermill chicken which she loved and our son had chicken nuggets which are homemade. We all enjoyed our meal tremendously. Hopefully the next time we visit I can let someone else drive so I can sample the beers they brew on the premises. Whether a special occasion or just passing through I can highly recommend The Watermill Inn.

Had a really tasty falafel burger here in January - tasty and what felt like homemade. Today the same meal was clearly a frozen burger frozen chips a few salad leaves and sachets of ketchup. For £14.95. Taking the mickey I think.

Nice welcome on arrival and seated where requested. Service, food and price was perfect. Meal was the best we have had in a long time. Complements to the chef and the servers.

Family birthday here for 7 of us as always the food is lovely and they cater for gluten free which is great food took a little time but is was busy so have to expect this Fish and chips was yummy some other in our party had steak pie and said it was lovely great load of beers to choose from fire was on and was nice and warm Well done guys good food

Been a customer of watermill inn for over twenty years. Great drink and food. However visited today pub was literally emptied went on my own with the lab. Selected table to be told by an awful abrupt barmen that I can’t sit there if only one. And instituted i sit on the tiniest table which was in the way of everyone. Told me it was going to get busy so tough. Decided to leave as his attitude was appalling. Whoever owns this place needs to track the roster for the 20/12 and make sure this individual is never front of house.

What has happened?! Been visiting this pub regularly since 1990 when there was truly a grumpy landlord. Since then the pub has been my favourite in the whole wide world until something changed in 2022/23? I am so very sad. Back to the days of grumpy staff, poor service (I love being ignored by bar staff), a disinterested landlord and an atmosphere that has taken a distinct turn for the worse. Beer remains good. Food okay although the menu has become dull. No banter. No smiles. I guess customers just mean money these days? What happened to the lovely lady that recently ran the place? I hope this is a temporary change in atmosphere. By the way - that’s over 30 years of custom …. 🤔

Down visiting Kendal for the weekend and saw this whilst out and about. Popped in for a drink and Sunday dinner. Can’t fault anything. Staff were very nice, friendly and attentive. Food was good, with decent portions. A selection of local ales were available, which were lovely too. Would definitely recommend.

Beautiful settings, amazing people and outstanding fresh food. Beautiful quiet place with a canal at the back, Staff were very kind and helpful. The food were just awesome.. you can feel the local produce and the freshness of the product. There was real passion in it. Most amazingly they have there own local brewery. We tried some of there beers and that just topped it all. Food were bang on and served by the kitchen staff straightaway. They understand special request And delivered as ordered. Price were decent. Will definitely go there again when i go up north again.

Great location and really nice pub with their own beers from the brewery. Only a short stay for a drink but lots of people were arriving for food so surely must be good.

Stayed here for 1 night myself, husband and wee shih tzu dog 🐶 was in room 6, very comfortable and spotlessly Clean, very comfy bed and good shower, we had to have the fan on that was in the cupboard as it was really warm at night as it was I really nice day, very friendly staff and polite and pleasant, had a evening meal both thought is was just ok but thought the Baileys cheesecake was delightful, the breakfast on the other hand was excellent and really good choices, service excellent , great deal on take away beer 12 bottles for £30 for my husband which I thought was great deal. All in all a great stay and I would highly recommend to all.

Avoid! If I could give a 0 rating I would. We went to this pub on the advice of our campsite which was our first mistake, got there the place seems lovely and charming warm atmosphere, seemed like good ales on that’s where the experienced stopped we ordered food were told it was a 45 min to 1 hour wait we were starving after our hike so we were happy to wait. The couple Across from us complained about their good and I just assumed they were being picky I was raised on eat what you are given how wrong I was 1 1/2 hours go by and finally the food comes I had the beef pie the meat was inedible dry and tough pastry was hard to cut potato wedge chips were half cooked I didn’t even try the mushy peas they looked dried out and unappealing. My partner got a burger he bit in to it and it was dripping with grease vile we barley ate any of it we asked for a refund we Left dissatisfied and still hungry not a great experience hope this was a one off but I doubt it will not be back

Visited a few times during our week's holiday, staying in Ings. Excellent customer service, amazing choice of lagers brewed on the premises and very clean. Lots of places to sit, inside or out, whatever you prefer. We had a meal on a Thursday evening. We didn't pre book and although it was fairly busy, no problem getting a table and the service was great. The haddock and scampi was very good and large portion sizes - too full for a dessert! Definitely recommend this place for a quick pint or a meal.

We stopped here looking for accommodation on our stop in lake district. it was last minute plan. The lady at reception ( I didn't catch her name ) - was so helpful and kind and made us feel so welcomed. we wanted to have a quick look at the room before booking and she showed us the room even when they were so busy. The room was spotless clean and they put an extra bed for us. It was a kind lovely and nice stay. The only negative was - No AC in the room but then again its what the room offered and we took it. we had breakfast in morning before check out and it was fresh and hot and YUMMY. The waiter was so good. nice slim guy ( again I don't know his name) they all had a smile on their faces and lovely people. As a thankyou we gave small bunch of roses to that lady . all in all a lovely night stay in a clean place and a yummy breakfast. I recommend this place for sure . P.S. - we had a celebrity from India with us as he is family. He wanted to be low key so wanted to stay somewhere traditional English place away from busy city and this was nice - We didn't mention him at the hotel anyway but he has mentioned his stay at your inn on his insta page :-) Thankyou Manni

Very dissatisfied! starter fine, but main meal dry and overcooked. Told the staff when we went to the bar, just said she'd tell the kitchen staff then proceeded to charge us full price. Quite shocked at this service, we ofter drive up for a meal locally but afraid not anymore.

lovely setting, great place, quality ales and the food was brilliant. We were staying 100 yds away at Meadowcroft guest house for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Having ventured into Windermere each day we returned for the Golden Retriever and Prosecco plus the food on each and all 3 days. First Class,just returned from our annual trip to the watermill inn,it never fails to deliver. The Food is fantastic,atmosphere is lovely,staff are polite and friendly,i would highly reccomend a visit,most important to us its dog friendly to.

Wanted a meal after a long walk and swim on the way home via the m6 and saw this place on the way.. it did not disappoint!! Friendly service lovely pint and the food was absolutely outstanding! Will go again next time we go to the lakes.. thank you!

Came here for a meal after a weekend away. I ordered the venison burger served on ciabatta with lettuce tomato and onion chutney. What actually came was a burnt burger in a sesame bap! I complained just to be told they would change the menu!!

Drove past this on our way to troutbeck and decided to try it a few days into our holiday, excellent food and great selection of beer a lot of which are brewed there, we all tried something different and all left empty plates (steak & ale pie is best I’ve ever had), does get very busy so may have to wait for a table but definitely worth the wait , recommend everyone try this place at least once you won’t be disappointed

Just right - a short walk from our holiday cottage in Ings, dog friendly, superb beer choice and food to suit all the family. Visited three times during the week so daughter could try all the veggie options.

Stayed for a night so we could enjoy the beers and it lived up to expectations! Staff were incredibly attentive & friendly. Food was lovely, really enjoyed the sea-bass and the mushroom & spinach hollandaise for breakfast. Would def return!

This was our second visit to this establishment. Great as the first visit! Wonderful atmosphere. Friendly staff. Very dog friendly. Food was good and quickly served. Attentive staff . Our trip back to the lakes after 2 years and the pandemic ended well here . Of course we will be back .

We stayed Friday and Saturday night with pooch over the weekend. Although the pub was extremely busy the staff were fantastic and friendly. The room was basic and clean and although we were on the side of the inn that faced the busy road to Windermere the traffic noise was minimal. We ate at The Watermill both evenings and the food was really good - especially the Watermill chicken. Husband loved going through each of the beers! Breakfast was plentiful with a good selection. We left the car in the car park for the duration and caught the bus to Bowness from the end of the road which was really handy. Thank you Watermill for a great short break away - especially to Clive who really looked after us.

Unable to visit as after they had accepted the reservation via booking.com and had accepted our money they then decided that that were double booked and told us we couldn't stay. Told via email, not even the common courtesy of a phone call or an apology. We then had to email back in order to get our money refunded. Its difficult to say who is more at fault but they both come across as quite amateurish. If this is an example of the service that is provided I suppose I should be grateful I'm not staying.

When driving up from Manchester to the Lakes, we always stop for tea at the Watermill Inn. Their food is always excellent, such as chicken supreme with cream and mustard sauce, pies, huge crispy fish, succulent gammon steak, delectable homemade chips…I could go on. Their microbrewery makes great ale- get some bottles to take away! Staff are friendly, and cope well during busy times.

The food was good & the majority of the staff were nice however one particular member of staff was not quite so friendly. Even though it was quiet, my friend & I were asked to move to a smaller table, not generally a problem perhaps, however shortly after we had moved, the same table was occupied by only 2 people who were not asked to move. We both felt a little put out by this. A shame really as it’s put us off from returning again or recommending to anyone else.

Terrible service. Waited over an hour to have our orders taken and another hour to get our food served. Sat down at 7.15pm and food served at 9.30pm. Definitely won’t be coming back again. Not recommended especially if you have young children.

We popped in here with our two dogs for an evening meal while holidaying in the Lakes. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food we had was generous in portion size and absolutely lovely. The beer from the attached microbrewery was great too.

It had been a few years since we last stayed here and we were very impressed on our most recent visit. There has been quite a bit of money spent on improving the car park, bar areas and so on and it really has improved.The rooms have also been upgraded and are very comfortable indeed. After a day out walking in the fresh air we were shattered and slept really well in the very comfortable bed. And the breakfast! I can’t ever remember having a better full English than this one. All local produce and I only wish we could get the same quality of items nearer to home.All in all, a really enjoyable trip and when we will be making again soon.

Muy buen pub con muy buena seguridad de covid en su lugar - vinimos a tomar unas copas durante nuestra semana en los lagos y comimos aquí una noche - la comida era excelente y el personal fue muy servicial y educado - puedo recomendar encarecidamente. ¡Ser amigable con los perros también fue una ventaja! ! !

Si eres un caminante, ciclista, motociclista, entusiasta de la cerveza, experto en comida o local, este lugar es maravilloso. Atiende a personas con perros y tiene alojamiento arriba. Ésa es la única vez que puede reservar una mesa en un restaurante. Buena comida, bien preparada presentada y servida por un personal agradable. Visitamos en un par de ocasiones ya que estábamos cerca. Muy concurrido el domingo por la noche y más tranquilo el martes por la noche.

Hemos utilizado el molino de agua con regularidad como nuestra primera parada en los lagos para almorzar cuando estamos de vacaciones. Es muy conveniente después de un largo viaje. El aumento del tamaño del aparcamiento fue bienvenido desde nuestra última visita. Los protocolos de Covid parecían funcionar bien y no sentimos que eso le restara valor a nuestro disfrute de nuestro almuerzo. Excelente comida y bebida. Buen valor. Recomendado.

Elija este lugar para cenar, ya que estaba a solo 10 minutos en automóvil de nuestro alojamiento (Kendal Travelodge). No había leído ninguna crítica, por lo que no tenía preconcepciones. Nos reunimos en la entrada con una joven muy encantadora, agradable y servicial que nos dijo que había un grupo de 6 esperando una mesa delante de nosotros. Ella dijo, sin embargo, que intentaría apretujarnos y preguntar al grupo más grande si les importaba que tomáramos una mesa delante de ellos. Nos llevaron directamente a una mesa recién limpia y nos mostraron cómo escanear el código T&T y otro código para el menú. Llamado aquí hoy muy mal servicio incluso en cierre y 50% de descuento.Tuvimos que esperar 45 minutos para que nos sirvieran, no valió la pena esperar, pusieron las papas fritas en una canasta pequeña con todas las sobras en la parte inferior, así que tenga en cuenta que esto nos pasó antes. Realmente es una pena porque solía ser un buen pub en el pasado, pero no más, así que no volveremos, lo cual es otra pena, ya que hemos tenido una fiesta de Navidad aquí durante algunos años.

Mi esposo había buscado en este pub antes de que nos fuéramos de casa. Muy facil de encontrar. Mucho espacio. Almorzamos aquí. Tuve el gammon - oh bien. La comida era excelente y el personal también, trabajando muy bien (Covid). Mantenemos este lugar en nuestra lista por primera vez que estemos en los lagos.

Llamado por la remota posibilidad de que tuvieran una mesa libre. (no, no reservamos?) Resultó que no aceptan reservas y si estábamos felices de esperar, nos acomodarían. Recibimos una cálida bienvenida y nos ofrecieron bebidas mientras esperábamos. 20 minutos más tarde nos habían sentado y nuestro pedido de comida tomado. Había una excelente variedad de alimentos para todos los gustos. Optamos por la tarta de bistec y cerveza, patatas fritas y guisantes acompañada de una excelente pinta de cerveza elaborada en el lugar.El pastel era sabroso y saludable, bien vale la pena esperar. El personal era amable y servicial y se cumplieron las directrices de COVID 19. Recomiendo encarecidamente este lugar cálido y acogedor que admite perros al viajero hambriento y amante de la cerveza. Large family group visited with pet dog too. We were fully accommodated. Food was of an excellent standard. Traditional meals and excellent quality. Good social distancing measures in place and sanitizing points. Would happily visit again.

Called for lunch following a friends recommendation. Excellent food, friendly staff, good social distancing precautions. Good for pub food.

El pub no estaba muy lejos de donde nos alojamos. Fuimos a comer y beber. Preparan su propia cerveza para que puedas probar el barril y luego llevarte las botellas a casa. El personal fue atento. Vimos este lugar en el camino de regreso de Keswick y decidimos detenernos. Al llegar, nos ofrecieron una mesa cerca de la puerta o una más adentro cerca de la cervecería en la que nos sentamos. Las precauciones de Covid 19 fueron excelentes. Rastree y rastree a través de un código QR, así como del menú, lo que significa que no hay rastro de papel. Ida por el pub y servicio de mesa completo. Pedimos dos hamburguesas de ternera, un bistec y tarta de cerveza y una comida para niños, además de 4 coques por un total de 52, que era razonable para la zona en la que estábamos. El servicio fue excelente, los lugareños eran amables y cuando volvamos a visitar los lagos definitivamente volveremos. Definitivamente lo recomendaría a cualquiera.

Después de haber estado en Windermere y regresar a la caravana en Kendal, decidimos tomar comida mientras estábamos fuera. Vi la furgoneta de Windermere Brewing Company afuera, así que me detuve por capricho.La comida era muy buena (pastel de carne y curry) y el personal del bar conocía bien las cervezas.A pesar del distanciamiento y el alboroto que generó, todo transcurrió sin problemas. También se permiten perros adentro, por lo que el nuestro estaba feliz.

Llamamos para almorzar ayer, esta fue nuestra primera visita al pub, así como nuestra primera comida desde que comenzó el cierre y quedamos realmente impresionados, todos los problemas de seguridad se consideraron y estaban bien organizados.La comida fue deliciosa, sin duda volveremos a llamar.

Needed some stoge after a day in the mountains, this place is spectacular, the food is awesome, good beer and not overly attentive service. P.s. seriously... ...go for the steak and ale pie

Las precauciones de Watermill Covid 19 son excelentes. Escanear códigos QR para obtener detalles de contacto y menús, junto con un servicio de mesa completo, significa un 100% de confianza en un riesgo ultra bajo. Las bebidas / comer en mesas al aire libre o en el tipi del estacionamiento o comer adentro en mesas bien espaciadas está bien organizado y el personal es brillante. Con o sin perros / niños, el menú principal de bebidas y comida y el ambiente general significa que este pub es un gran comienzo o final para su visita a los lagos del sur. ¡Bien hecho Watermill!

Reservamos un fin de semana el primer fin de semana después del cierre. Sarah, Kim y el resto del equipo fueron excelentes. Tenían un plan realmente bueno para mantener a todos sanos y salvos y lo siguieron con uno o dos pequeños ajustes. La comida y la bebida eran de primera categoría y solo mejoró el excelente servicio que nos brindaron. Actuar de la forma en que lo hicieron en circunstancias tan difíciles y con una sonrisa hizo que nuestras vacaciones, especialmente porque el clima era malo. No podían hacer más por nosotros y siempre estaban disponibles si los necesitábamos. ¿Volveremos tan pronto como podamos?

Our second visit here. We came for the pie again and it was delicious. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Lovely cosy fire.

Just spent a night in this super pub/hotel, what a gem of a find.Lovely cosy well equipped bedrooms, spotlessly clean.We got a very pleasant welcome when we arrived, and were shown to our room straight away.The evening meals were excellent, good choice and great value.There is a plentiful choice of beers available from the attached brewery at very reasonable prices, plus a well stocked bar for those who aren't ale drinkers.There is an excellent filling breakfast available with room no allocated tables (so you're not faced with sitting at a table with other people's empty dishes still about) and one again a very good choice of menu.Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place, and we hope to be back very soon

Not visited for many years although we only live a short distance away had the house special which was a disappointment pastry was uncooked on the inside and the meat tough and overpriced certainly be many years before we cal call again

Lovely cosy bar and restaurant. Had our lunch in the bar area with roaring fire. Extensive menu with specials on the board. Excellent beer (plus carry out!) Roast dinners looked fab but we had a crab salad and fish pie.. delicious. Very tasty whitebait to start. Fabulous setting even on a rainy day. Will return.

We have visited the water mill on many occasions and again this time was no different We arrived on a wet and cold November night we sat in the bar area where the open fire was roaring the staff were welcoming and the food very good The chicken supreme was well supreme they were happy to help my mother who is gluten intolerant and my partner having the fish and chips The meals were cooked well and arrived quickly

I was really looking forward to lunch at the Watermill Inn which has some great reviews. I am sorry to leave a poor review, I rarely do. First the positives - lovely , comfortable old pub and the beer is very good. The menu is quite varied and interesting - unless you happen to want vegetarian or Vegan food. We were there with our son who is Vegan. There were only two choices (from the vegetarian options just omitting some sauces), neither very inspiring in contrast to the meat/fish options. We ordered the veg chilli which was very disappointing - hardly any flavour and no beans?? despite the description saying it had five types of beans. It was more of a stew as it had aubergine in it - but it was served with rice and taco (which were also poor). The others ordered the Turbot special - which we found a bit overcooked and the sauce tasteless. I ordered the steak pie which was actually very good. So, overall we felt the Watermill Inn really doesn't cater very well for vegetarians or Vegans. One final note - staff I asked seemed to have very little idea of what options were available for Vegan diets - maybe I'm sounding too critical but lately most good restaurants/pubs in the area have much better options. Oh and if you want a Vegan pudding there is no option.

Absolutely amazing place. Came in for food and ended up book a stay in a couple of weeks. So family friendly and cosy. Food 2nd to none same as staff so friendly and welcoming. Can't wait for my stay on the 25th.

Couple of visits last week, the food is nice , the beer (their own brews) always good, from pale to dark not a single miss, staff always friendly and approachable , like a a chat! It manages to cater for both the tourist trade and yet is obviously a proper locals pub too, it’s very dog friendly, a pair called Bob and Tia, local resident (father and daughter) give it a top rating too! Have also stayed there a couple of times in the past, clean tidy room and a breakfast that will keep you going all day. It is a must do visit when ever in The Lakes.
