We decided to eat here because it was rated #4 in Kelso. I have no idea how it got this rating. I had fish and chips. The batter on the fish was quite greasy, and the chips were tasteless. The service was really slow, perhaps they need more servers. The decor is dated and could do with a fresh coat of paint. Unfortunately, not worth a visit.

I don't like to complain but in 3 years on Trip Advisor and 22 positive reviews left, I have to highlight possibly the worst pizza I have ever had the misfortune to order - think my S1s would do better in Home Ec 😪😱 'Artisan' pizza it is not... - thick dough, tomato puree not sauce and a really thick layer of cheese (there may have been mozzarella but I could only taste the cheddar - cheddar does not belong on a margherita!) Virtually the only veggie thing on the menu... Not cheap either (£13.85 so not the most expensive but for the poor quality not good). Very little choice of eatery in Kelso on a Monday that's not fine dining. The Wagon is rated 4th in Kelso and also has 4.6 on Google. I really don't see how. The staff flarw friendly but there's no atmosphere in the Wagon Inn. Got a nice chilled cider at least and the supervisor deducted 10% (yes, £1.35... I'd only eaten two slices). I walked 20 miles in glorious sunshine so a sad end to the day with dinner ending up being sandwiches from Lidl.

After the less than stellar experience at Floors Castle. We came to The Waggon on a bit of a whim. And we are very glad we did! Great parking right outside, seated very quickly, dogs very welcome here. Staff were lovely and very attentive. Food was brilliant, staff were very happy to adjust a burger to suit me, the Sunday carvery was very good and the honeycomb cheesecake was just brilliant. The dogs got plenty of pets from the staff and a biscuit each, both which they were very happy with. We were offered some water for them too.

Food is amazing if you don't mind a side dish of attitude from the staff. My husband and I went for dinner during the week at 19:30, there was a total of 3 tables occupied, so the place was rather empty. We stood at the sign that said "wait here." Waitress behind the counter greeted us by snapping, following conversation took place:- "Table? Yes, please, 2? Yes, please, Booked? No, we haven't. Sorry (Long sigh,) I'll have to see if we have any free? I'll need to clean one. (Followed by another long sigh.) We stood and waited. The waitress came back, "One in the corner," and painted. My husband and I walked over and sat down. (All occupied tables were togther, this ment it was noisy and not easy to hear one another across the table.) The waitress came back over and handed us menus, "No macaroni." And walked away. We were disappointed as this was what we were planning on having. My husband and I discussed whether we should stay or go as the place wasn't friendly and the attitude of the staff member was awful, at which point another waitress came over and took our drinks order. This waitress was completely different, friendly, and positive. (Nothing was an issue or an "inconvenience.") The young, friendly waitress brought our drinks and took our food order. Food came quickly and was delicious. The chef and the young waitress saved our visit to The Waggon. I have since tried phoning The Waggon several times over 2 days to raise this issues with our visit, however the phone is never answered therefore I have had to make the issues public. There are a few places to eat in Kelso and I would think twice about revisiting The Waggon. It is no longer our first choice because of the staff members attitude.

AVOID!! Disappointing valentines dinner. We came here as perviously have dined at the waggon last year, but think it’s changed hands. Really has went down hill. We got the starter valentines platter which was cold, frozen food. It wasn’t even busy in the place either, cold atmosphere and no music, not welcoming by staff either. We then had steak for main, which ended up being medium after asking for medium rare, both came medium. Cheap steak and chips weren’t cooked properly. I’m a chef myself I know it can be hard but this wasn’t acceptable. Didn't even get offered any sauce with steak which I expected for the price I was paying! When getting main meal, the cutlery was slammed down on table and napkins wasn’t with the cutlery. Waitress was very rude and no one offered any more drinks. Didn’t even pay attention on multiple occasions I tried to catch her attention or other staff on duty. We ended up leaving most of the meal. Dessert ended up being tinned fruit in the crumble which also wasn’t great. Service still shocking as when asked for the bill it was given to my girlfriend and also this was slammed. It was like more of an issue being there to the staff. I spent over £60 for this experience. As I say waggon use to be good, has went massively down hill!! Never again. Will not be back for sure. Avoid if you want a decent meal.

We attended this restaurant with my family because the ratings seem very good and lots of people seem to recommend this place. However this restaurant was a clear low-point for us in Kelso. Maybe this was a uniquely bad experience that just happened to us. We had the fish and chips as well as the meat pie. The meat tasted good and that was it. Fish had no taste, chips were bland, the coleslaw, like almost everywhere else in the UK it seems, was way too heavy and mainly just consisted of mayonnaise. The cherry on top was a stone in the salad which I luckily didn't break a tooth on. Anyways, the venue was pretty basic. The music in the room we got placed in was way too loud and very obnoxious. The staff were nice tho. They did seem very open and willing to help. I still don't understand how the restaurant was so full. I guess if you're accustomed to this level of food, why wouldn't you eat here. For us this was a hit and a big miss.

Been here a number of times but our meal ,a couple of days ago , really was a let down. I had the hamburger meal. Best thing was the cole slaw. The hamburger had no flavour at all. A dry piece of meat with hard crunchy salad, flavourless. Less chips too, i noticed. My husband, an older man, asked for a half portion ( child's portion) of fish and chips that sells for £12.25 for a full portion. He can't eat as much , being elderly. He got the half portion. (The batter on the fish was mushy, not crispy.) When it came to pay, they charged £10.50 for his half portion !! The Waggon has lost it's appeal for us.. The food has no flavour, overpriced ( especially this new idea of theirs to charge almost £70 for 2 for a small, tasteless looking steak for 2). We won't be returning again. Over rated, smaller portions on full price meals and over charge for child's portion and flavourless.

We booked this on Sat afternoon for Sat Evening. We thought we would get there a little early and enjoy a drink at the bar before we ate. However there isn’t a seating/waiting area just for the bar, so that wasn’t possible. We were shown to our table, even though we were early. The table was very small, and tucked away in a corner. It wasn’t a good first impression. Tables are not set with tablecloths, so just bare wood and cutlery. It felt a bit like they found an old table and stuck it in a corner out of the way! We ordered drinks which arrived in a timely manner. We found the staff friendly and helpful. We both ordered starters, prawn cocktail for my wife and in all honesty I can’t remember what I ordered. For mains, we both ordered the Tartan Chicken, which arrived quickly and was well presented. There was an (over) abundance of vegetables, mostly carrots, which filled the plate. We had to ask staff for cutlery to eat the mains with, which reinforced the feeling of just being stuck in a corner at the last minute. We both found this to be very tasty, and nicely cooked. Overall we weren’t over impressed with The Waggon, but there isn’t anything overly wrong with it either. As the title says, It is what it is. Decent food for a decent price, but not somewhere we would look to visit again.

Lovely relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant. There was an extensive menu and the food was very tasty. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We parked in the main street around the corner from the restaurant as there were no restrictions on time. Very near the local shops so ideal place for lunch if you're planning a shopping trip. xxx

Great evening meal served up by very friendly staff. The burger from their ‘Specials’ menu was delicious as was my husband’s ‘Tartan’ burger (chicken).

Went with friends for lunch, the restaurant was busy but is large so it didn't feel crowded. Good selection of food on the menu, one friend had the steak and couldn't have been happier, said it was so tender and best steak she'd had in a long time. Food was delicious and staff friendly. Would definitely go back.

A very busy and large restaurant. was able to book for a Friday night, a couple of hours ahead. Food menu was varied and the food of a reasonable quality, and very keenly priced.

We had a lovely afternoon here, with great food and service. However, we are extremely grateful to Kirsty who helped us with our dog when he started convulsing while choking on food. She was so calm and helpful during such a scary time. Thank you for your amazing support!

Go here now before everyone else figures out what amazing value this place is! The drive through the Scottish countryside is stunning (a half-hour drive from the railway stop at Galashiels). The owners have created something special that I simultaneously want to keep to myself and share with the world. Oxana's hosting (and baking and wine-pairing) skills mean you are welcomed with friendly service, clear explanations of the wine pairings and amazing, sweet treats. We have been twice - once in September and once in November - and from beginning to end, our glasses were never empty, and we were treated to amazing service. Now, the food is really something to talk about. Bryn is doing something special here. The food is fresh and innovative while remaining down to earth and approachable. A simple parsnip soup sent our table to heaven with its perfect spice. We had pork belly with the crunchiest crackling and lentils with vegetables that were flavoured so beautifully I couldn't tell what was in them. Blue cheese with truffled honey had all of us begging for more. Every bite is a delight, and some of it was items I wouldn't normally order. This food, this place, is truly something special, reflecting our Borders community and some of the best food in Scotland. Go now!

Stopped in for some lunch today. Friendly service with a good and varied choice of menu. Offers half portions of meals if more suitable. Brilliant value. Hot and cold options available. Felt like the teapot was bottomless, think it was 3 cupfuls in total!

Wonderful food and so nicely presented and the young man serving was so polite and professional. Only negative was the disappointing vegetarian options for my sister. Macaroni cheese is more suited to a cafe menu. But a lovely evening none the less.

Got to say, I’ve never had a bad meal or experience in here. The ham hock and lentil soup as amazing, the steak and mushroom pie was outstanding. It was packed with lean steak in a lush, beefy broth type gravy. Great fies, a la dente peas and everything was piping hot and cooked to order. Even the plates were warm, which I always appreciate. The staff were great and the owner is a real friendly guy. If yer heading North or South on the A68, make sure this is yer pit stop, even for a coffee and cake. Made me smile today whilst I was eating, it was that good. It looks like a greasy spoon if you pass it on the road, but it’s not! It’s on a par with very good pub grub, and it’s really clean inside, as is the kitchen which I passed on the way to use the bathroom.
