This cafe is now under new ownership and is called THE KNOWES. It is open from 9:30 until 4 (3 on a Sunday). It has been under new ownership since February this year and has had a lick of paint and a fresh menu - albeit broadly similar to the old one. Having visited the cafe several times on visits to Kelso over the last few years, it remains my favourite venue to get a hot drink and a simple meal. The premises are kept very clean and presentable.

Had been before, lovely young staff, however the owner is very pedantic. You must wait at the sign, rather regimental . Don't get a full cup and if you ask for full cup, owner gets annoyed. Very very poor ventilation. Gets very hot in there. Main door open, then a side door but no windows. Also, they keep the overhead lighting off to save on energy which means not as bright to read a paper Rather stingy and owner not very welcoming. Won't be returning

Great place for coffee and scones - or really naughty cakes, if that's your preference. It's also a good place for lunch, but it gets very busy and you may want to reserve a table. They do excellent home-made soups and a range of plain and toasted sandwichesas well as ciabatta and panini.

My partner and found this place as it was by the car park where we parked. Kelso had been recommended to visit but it was such a cold and windy day we got fed up and headed back to the car. Deciding to stop for coffee we chose Hoot 'n Cat and what a great find. I had ciabatta (brie and cranberry) and my partner had stovies. I didn't want the accompaniment with the ciabatta which was no problem (many times I find this request is ignored). This was the best brie and cranberry ciabatta I have ever eaten! The place was very busy but all the staff were pleasant, efficient and nothing was too much trouble. I recommend a stop here.

Visited Kelso today and saw their sign in front of the derelict Church advertising the cafe being the Church, we eventually found it, the sign on the door said open, but it was closed, checked the opening times and it doesn't open on Sundays, so why have signs out and open on the door, very annoying.

Visited yesterday and as ever, the staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. The choice of food was amazing especially as these days, places understandably have restrictions. Can't fault the quality of food and the portion size is pretty generous too with everything being attractively presented. The atmosphere is relaxed with different seating areas (standard tables & chairs or more informal sofas) which we love.

I arrived with my friend and we waited at the ‘wait here to be seated’ sign. Multiple members of staff ignored us while we waited. The older waitress on the nearby till didn’t acknowledge our arrival so we edged forward thinking that she hadn’t seen us. She eventually said hello and asked us if we wanted to pay. When we explained that we were waiting for a table, she very rudely told us off for not having waited behind the sign. When we tried to explain that we moved forward because nobody had seen us she patronising told us that we needed to remember the importance of adhering to social distancing during the pandemic. (Just to point out that we hadn’t recently landed from Mars and are perfectly aware of the global pandemic that is currently raging). She clearly didn’t like non-locals as she was uber-friendly with other patrons who were clearly regulars including allowing a pair to completely ignore the sign and wander in. Who new there was one rule for locals and one for visitors? They should have included it on the sign! When we were served by a more friendly young waitress we tried to make an order but their jacket potatoes were not available so we changed our order to soup and sandwiches. The soup was very bland and could have been improved by salt and pepper but these were not available. I have been to other cafes and restaurants who can offer seasonings on the table. We decided to eat up quickly and leave, not ordering coffee and cake like we would have done. I would have scored this review as terrible if it weren’t for the young friendly waitress.

Nice cafe with mostly good produce, the soup is excellent but be careful, some items are way over priced, eg. I requested a simple/basic cheese toastie, no frills, no foliage etc. At the till I was asked for £5-75, ridiculous amount for 2 slices of ''thin bread'' and a bit of cheese, £2.50 would have been a fair price.I won't be going again

We were met upon entry and take to a table for two and our order was taken quickly. We ordered a toastie which was well cooked and nice and crisp on both sides ( one of my whinges when one side is soggy) The pit of tea for two was generous and also a lot of hot water for a top up.The staff were friendly and although was quite full the was plenty of room without feeling crunched up. On entering the cafe we were greeted with a warm welcome and seated in the spacious cafe, which was busy, which we saw as a good sign. When our drinks arrived I was very pleased to see that as well as our pot of tea we were given a pot of hot water so we could top up the pot. A great start to our visit. Upon ordering our food we were disappointed that despite it being half past 1 and lunch service not finishing until 3 they were all out of both kinds of soups, jacket potatoes and white bread, which fair enough it was a cold day outside so lots of people would have been wanting a warm meal. Our food arrived quickly but when our paninis arrived I was disappointed to see that despite the menu saying it would be served with salad and coleslaw it came with a bowl of crisps which tasted greasy, not worth the £6 price tag. A few minutes after we were served our panini’s another customer came into the cafe and sat at the table next to ours, when he tried to order soup he too was told that they had ran out but then when he ordered a jacket potato his order was taken and he was then served a jacket potato, despite us being told less than 10 minutes ago that there were none left. I appreciate that in that time the cafe could have cooked more potatoes, but if it were the case that they were still cooking them we surely should have been offered as we would have been happy to wait. Overall we left disappointed with the service and quality of meal so will not be returning or recommending.

Having visited on previous occasions when in the area, and been very happy with the food and the service, we were very disappointed when we visited for breakfast on 1/9/18. We ordered our food together and 2 out of 3 received them together. The third person had ordered a cooked breakfast and it came well after the other 2, well half of it did. The plate looked quite empty as it was lacking the 2 slices of toast, and there was no explanation from the waitress so we waited about 10 minutes for the toast. We then asked for it and the waitress went to arrange it - we all started to eat what we had been given for breakfast, as they were all cooked. The half breakfast had been eaten by the time the toast arrived, with a weak apology about the wait. We felt that as we had to wait so long for half of one meal we should have been offered at least another cup of coffee each free of charge but this didn't happen. When we went to pay we told the member of staff that we were disappointed and she apologised and the owner then asked what had happened and she apologised and said it was because they had been very busy but as we were sitting watching and waiting we were aware that it was not actually very busy as half the tables were empty! We will probably not be using this eating place again whilst on holiday in the Scottish Borders.

After visiting the delightful Kelso Pottery we decided to pop next door for lunch. The cafe was very busy but space was found. Unfortunately our first chouces had run out so decided on simple sandwiches with salad accompaniment, I just wish the quality of bread used was better, white sliced doesn’t really cut the mustard anymore. Friendly service, decent prices but let down by a basic ingredient. It won't put us off as there looks to be more choice usually. Come on, find a decent bread supplier and you'll have cracked it,

Just went in for a cuppa to souse it out. Food looks tempting. BIG scones...a plus. Offers breakfast and lunch items. Prices a bit high. But main minus was the seating at tables. Hard, hard seats. A thin bit of material on the seats which added no comfort whatsoever. When I mentioned this to the owner, she said there are sofas to sit on. Not conducive to eating meals off a lower table, sitting on a living room sofa or big chair . If proper cushioned seats, would get full stars. Easily rectified , if owner cares .

I have to take back my previous review! The food is still very nice but I usually patronised it because I believed my two little dogs were allowed. However when I visited with my daughter and a friend for lunch we made the mistake of wandering in through the propped open side door and sitting in the corner at the back with the dogs under the table. The lady in charge then treated me to a long and embarrassing lecture about how we should have asked her permission as other customers children could be allergic- can't see how begging permission would help- would she have canvassed th e whole cafe for their medical history! The whole thing was very awkward and I wish we had just left and gone to the ' Cream Chimneys' which says it is dog friendly and is! Noisy children are more of a problem to many customers than dogs but I don't try to ban them! My main gripe though is-make your mind up you are either dog friendly or you aren't-don't ask me to beg to give you my custom. It is perfectly ok not to allow dogs just say so on the door and I will take my custom elsewhere.

The Hoot 'n' Cat may not look anything special from the outside but try one of their lunches and you'll find out why it's so popular. Be sure to have salad with whatever else you choose because their coleslaw is fantastic and they serve grapes, olives and pretzels with it, and if there's anything you're not keen on just say and they'll leave it out. I usually go for a toastie with said salad followed by a double-shot Latte and I think it's great value for money. The staff are always cheerful and helpful even when very busy. A place locals keep going back to but if you're visiting the area and want an unfussy but hearty lunch or nice home-baking in a friendly atmosphere it's worth going out of your way for.

Being married to a vegan, it’s great to find places like the Hoot n Cat café near the abbey that serve soya lattes and dairy-free soup. I saw the freestanding noticeboard outside the abbey and rang the number to see if they were vegan-friendly. When we arrived, my dad-in-law was knackered after walking from Roxburgh along a bank of the Teviot, but revived after a bowl of red pepper and sweet potato soup. I had americano and a brie-and-olive panino. Nice place, friendly young staff.

We went with a couple of local friends and had various tea cakes, cakes, teas and coffee. Everything was good and the service efficient and friendly. I would recommend that Hoot n'Cat to anyone visiting Kelso.

Came across this lovely cafe on a day out in Kelso. The owners cater for everyone with a room for parents with babies & young children where there was toys to play with or quieter areas for us 'older ones'. The food was excellent and the staff very friendly. They had some very tempting cakes/tray bakes but unfortunately we were too full to try them. It was quite busy whilst we were there as they also do a take away service.

Called in and found a bustling, vibrant atmosphere. Great value drinks and an amazing selection of cakes and tray bakes. Light lunch menu looked appealing but will keep that for our next visit.

This little cafe situated near to the free car park of the square at Kelso.is always busy. A favourite for office workers at lunchtime you need to book. But off peak we found it a relaxing place that served lovely cakes and scones. Excellent coffee too.

We visited with a family after reading reviews. Sadly we were a little disappointed as many items on the menu were not available although it was 1.30 and it had been busy. The soup - leek and potato was ok although it was very watery. Sandwiches were good. Staff very friendly and helpful - great service prompt and efficient.

We frequent this coffee shop regularly. It is one of the nicest in the area. The coffee is very good (it's amazing how many coffee shops sell bad coffee) and the cheese scones are brilliant. The owner and her staff are just lovely - very efficient and always friendly and cheerful. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is very tasty. Nice light lunches with enough choice. And cakes? Oh yes, there are cakes. My favourite is the Border Tart for a treat but most times I have a cheese scone. Just perfect.

We dined here for lunch on three consecutive days as we just loved it so much. There is so much choice and everything is freshly made in house. The baking is wonderful - Border tart and banana honey scones are just the best. The staff members are so pleasant and make you feel really welcome. Cannot fault this place - best cafe in Kelso!

Stopped in for some lunch today. Friendly service with a good and varied choice of menu. Offers half portions of meals if more suitable. Brilliant value. Hot and cold options available. Felt like the teapot was bottomless, think it was 3 cupfuls in total!

A weekend away in the Scottish Borders led to us unexpectedly finding this wonderful restaurant in the Yarrow Valley today. It was one of the best Sunday roasts we’ve had in years (delicious local beef and pork) and a seriously tempting menu focussed around local ingredients by Bryn Jones. The honey cake for dessert by @she.likesbaking was also incredible and I’ve only just realised that Oxana Jones is not only a wonderful front-of-house host, but also an extremely talented baker. Thank you to your team, it was a memorable lunch and we’ll definitely be back for one of your tasting menus and an overnight stay.

Great little cafe. Excellent bacon, sausage, and egg role for the price. Coffee was ok. Opens early.
