We lunch here every month or so and are always welcomed by a friendly face, and Charlie the dog of course 😉

Second visit, just as brilliant as the first, Excellent food and value. Definitely going back.

Had a fantastic meal. Excellent, attentive service, couldn't do enough to make our evening even more enjoyable. Great, friendly atmosphere. Nice to see somewhere that welcomed dogs too.

Went with a friend for Sunday Lunch in late October. Booked by phone last minute, arrived to a great welcome. Had a generous starter of white bait. And the Roast Beef main course… With an extra Yorkshire! Wow amazing. Shared a bottle of red wine. Too full for dessert sadly. Waitress was friendly but not intrusive and did a great job. The price was excellent for Sunday lunch for two. Thoroughly recommend the Sunday lunch. Will return on next visit to the UK 🇬🇧

Beautiful pub, worth a drive to, gorgeous food, pool table, skittles, great garden, children friendly.

Brilliant pub with really amazingly friendly landlady we arrived at the pub very tired and hungry after a gruelling day we were greeted with a smile and we asked about food landlady told us that the chef was out for supplies, we thought oh no we will have to go somewhere else but no she went above and beyond to make us welcome and gave us a menu we chose two burgers with rosemary salted fries, when food came with onion rings fresh lettuce a gherkin and tomatoes homemade beef burgers a delicious burger sauce and real heinz tomato ketchup in a bottle not those annoying sachets the burger was large and juicy and all the accompliments were delicious washed down with a cold glass or two of diet coke all in all a great experience. I would definitely return at another time all pubs should be as welcoming as this to weary traveller's as I have already stated the landlady went above and beyond to make us welcome even asking if we required a sweet but we were already full due to the large portions thanks so much from Dave and Mike

What an amazing village pub the food it out of those world the service it excellent the bar start are very welcoming there is a young lady serving food smiling All the time and very polite. Top marks all round wonderful little pub definitely visiting again.

Great friendly service, decent sized meals and well priced. They have great vegetarian options. Definately a welcoming atmosphere for this local pub.

Very nice Sunday lunch and welcoming staff

Called in on the off chance, the lovely landlady squeezed us in to an already busy and buzzing atmosphere. The food was lovely, I highly recommend the chicken curry. It was nice to be in a pub that has got back the pre covid feel. We will definitely be back soon.

We went to the volunteer Inn on Wednesday evening there was 5 of us,had a great meal and really enjoyed it. The owners of the pub was brilliant.

Found the Volunteer very cold, radiators were off, only one small open fire burning.

Really friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and great food. I'm a veggie and it was so nice to see more than 1 veggie option on the menu and all of the options sounded really tempting. I went for the veggie pie, mustard mash and peas, it was delicious and had plenty of veggie gravy in a little jug so you could choose how much to have. My partner had scampi to start which he enjoyed, he had Rump Steak which he said was cooked perfectly medium rare, he had chips and peas with it. For puddings I had sticky toffee with ice cream, it came with 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream which was great although my personal preference would have been for half a scoop of ice cream more but that is because it was so nice. My partner had chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream which he really enjoyed too. Service was very friendly and efficient and we felt very welcome. We will definitely be visiting again.

Lovely village pub with a warm welcome atmosphere

I have given 5 stars, because the friendliness & service of the staff was excellent. The salt & pepper sqid was fab. The pork chops were okay, though my dining companions, ate the various other offerings from the menu, they were more than happy with the fayre. I would definitely recommend a visit. The ladies toilets are a bit of a struggle to close the door LOL. Otherwise excellent

Called in to this village pub for lunch and was'nt disappointed. Good choice on the menu and food was served piping hot. Had to wait a while between main and dessert but that,perhaps, was a good thing as time to let the first course go down! However, the landlady, who by the way was very friendly & obliging has a puppy which she was holding and petting, when other customers arrived she proceeded to serve them WITHOUT washing her hands!! Not good where food is being served. Other than that we enjoyed a very nice lunch.

Very friendly staff and plenty of parking I didn't eat food only nibbles one only let down was the selection of ales I'm not a great fan of Arkells the 3B is probably the best pick. Two Arkell beers on and no guest ale?

Popped in for a drink on a really hot day. It's a beautiful pub with friendly staff and a cute little doggo to greet you. Think I'll probably be making the journey back to enjoy their menu

Amazing food, great menu and lovely and friendly staff. Family friendly area outside where pets and children can play. Evie is so hardworking. Rhiannon at the bar is lovely too.

My son and I had lunch at the Volunteer Inn, in the middle of Great Somerford, sat in their newly landscaped garden, which is now a lovely place to be! Service was friendly and quick, bringing our drinks, food etc to our table. Reasonably priced and tasty food, will definitely return, thank you!

Lovely village pub, called in after a morning walk, friendly staff and great service. Came back the next day for Sunday lunch. Excellent food.

We stayed overnight in our motor home during the "drinks outside" phase of lockdown. We were made very welcome, as was our dog, and served lovely food. There's a bustling local store opposite and some nice walks around the village so a great place to stop off on your travels.

Great place. Very welcoming landlady. Food was a bit basic, but it's good pub grub. Would very much recommend.

Unfortunately terrible coffee even though its from a decent Barista style machine 😕☕staff are willing but need some proper Barista training

Pleasant village inn in Wiltshire. Malmesbury skittles leagues matches played here, during the season. Now under new management and if the skittles supper is anything to go by visitors are in for a treat.

The Sunday lunch was excellent as ever. Losing Alex and his team from the Vollie is a real tragedy. They really got the place going again and got us to once again use our local on a regular basis.

Such a homely, and friendly pub; with excellent food and decor

We gave notice that there were two vegans in our party and the choices on offer were not appealing. They offered us a nut roast with all the veg which we chose. The roast was burnt and bitter, vegan gravy was going to be ready 10 minutes after our food came to the table or we could have the meat gravy which was ready. ( it only had a little bit of beef in it!!!!) We were also served Yorkshire pudding which were not vegan. They might serve meat eaters a satisfactory meal but we will not be going there again.

Great Pub! Perfect for any occasion. Also if you have any kids they can have a party. As a student from the school of Somerford it is lovely.

A good local pub in a small village. Not very big but gives it a cosy feel to the pub. Although there is a function room at the back. Not eaten hear but know the landlord and he runs a good pub. I would say well worth a visit.

Had fish and chips: fish was lovely, batter light and fluffy, but let down by the chips! Hand made chips would have been better! Very expensive drinks... Good atmosphere and friendly staff, but very quiet for weekday and bar dominated by massive tv.

A lively pub with a good selection of drinks. The live music when I visited was a bonus and evidently quite an attraction.

Great to see that the Volunteer is now under new management and has been refurbished. It has the potential to be really good local pub. When we visited on Friday night, they struggled to get our drinks and food orders right but once the staff have got a bit more experienced and the kitchen more established, I hope I'll be able to give it 5 stars and very much hope that this revitalised village pub can succeed.

Friendly village local, great food. Cask Mark approved although the ales are currently limited to Arkells. Some (non Sky) sports are shown, but the pub does have areas yuo can go to if you don't want the sports. Many traditional pub games are available here too.
