My Mum and I walked up Ivinghoe Beacon and then dropped down to The Village Swan in Ivinghoe Aston, which is only a short drive away. Neither of us had been before but we’ll definitely go back. A really lovely pub with friendly and attentive staff. The food was really good and plentiful and it was under £50 for a two course meal for two plus drinks. Would wholeheartedly recommend.

Myself and my family were going to stop at the pub whilst out, for a quick lunch and a drink. But on stopping we noticed how unkept the outside is, the front is covered with weeds, pots and window boxes with dead plants, garden area very unkept with overgrown plants taking over the fence. The main door seems to be the smoking area and didn't fancy having to walk through a cloud of smoke to get inside, so we decided to give it a miss. Shame as we had seen some good reviews.

Sunday lunch for husbands birthday, no starters on the menu but a wonderful traditional roast lunch. Unlimited roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy, which were excellent and husband had seconds of the potatoes, which is unheard of… service was good, greeted with smiles and chatty staff. Beer and wine were great, well kept beer and right temperature red and white wines. Overall an experience we will repeat, maybe in the week though as the roast is of two dishes beef or chicken and two vegan dishes, so a bit limiting, but the meats were succulent and nicely presented. We will return.

Our family meal ( 6 adults) to celebrate Father's day was an absolutely amazing experience. Loved the outdoor garden dining area, plenty tables and also a covered area too. We were greeted with a wonderful warm welcome by all the staff. The food was amazing. Choice was very good. And the chips are proper HAND MADE. We all had meals off the special menu, approx £15 each. My beef stevado with Herby potatoes was deeeelicious, infact all of our party enjoyed their meal and the sharing Meze was plentiful with good variety of quality breads, olives dips etc . We would have loved to try the Guinness Cake, ( Also on daily specials menu ) but all of us were far too full. I will certainly return when next in the area and recommend you pop in Google search directions. You may have to book if you don't want to be disappointed. Thank you to Nicole, Matt and Staff for our lovely day.

We used to go to this pub a lot but now in new hands what comes out of the kitchen is not great. I had the Mediterranean vegetable slice basically a burnt pastry filled with watery Aubergine. Website is not correct on a Sunday is basically just roast unless you know the chef than you get served a burger. The restaurant needs a good clean, have never seen so much dust on chairs.

Having not visited the Village Swan in over a year, it was such a treat to go back today. The new management started last May, not the best time to be a publican in the U.K. what with Covid-19. Hats off to Sean and Seb, every conceivable effort is being made to make their pub safe with plenty of signage, hand sanitisers and friendly staff on hand to guide you. They’ve decorated inside and given everywhere ‘new life’, it’s now light and welcoming as you walk in side. Outside is a beautiful beer garden with plenty of tables and parasols plus if you have youngsters there’s a playground directly opposite. During lockdown the landlords did take outs on specific nights which was such a treat in what were difficult times. The hosts are so accommodating, I witnessed several “would you mind” and “Can I change” requests during my visit and nothing was a problem. As I visited on a Sunday, I decided to have the Roast Beef - served with the crispiest yet fluffy light roast potatoes, large Yorkshire Pudding, Gravy and a plethora of fresh vegetables. Carrots, Leaks, Red Cabbage, Green Cabbage, Broccoli and Sugar Snap Peas. You know when a meal is great when the dog misses out on left overs! My only regret was not staying for Apple & Strawberry Crumble - deciding instead to pop back in the week for pudding and coffee.I recommend The Village Swan to everyone, young or old.

I had not been here since the Dutch owners and was at first a little disappointed there were no Dutch goodies left on the menu. Until I tasted the food. We were both very impressed with the freshness and flavour of mostly locally sourced food during both nights we were here (we had the Cajun burger, steak and ale pie, strawberry and apple crumble (sooo good), chocolate and orange tart and profiteroles-all bloody excellent! The ale and rosé were also outstanding. The place looks refreshed and we look forward to seeing it with the fires and candles on soon. The service was also outstanding were time was taken to speak with all the guests and when I had a little rosé related accident this was dealt with in a very lovely manner-thank you, you made our wedding anniversary very enjoyable. As promised, we will be back!

We’re lucky to have such a good independent village pub (not a brewery chain) on our doorstep and under the new management from May of this year it’s just got better. The landlords Sean and Seb and their staff are so welcoming to locals and visitors alike. Every time we’ve visited since lockdown the service, food and drinks have all been great. It’s good honest pub food ( but not too beige!) with an emphasis on locally sourced produce. So far our family has tried the fish, chips and mushy peas, Cesar salad, lamb flat bread, Dexter and Cajun burgers......they were all good as was the local beer and the gin/vodka & tonic in giant gin goblets (with a choice of decent tonics too). The pub is dog and child friendly and the freshly decorated beer garden has plenty of tables and benches in either the sun or shade. We’re really enjoying the new improved Village Swan being open again and it’s a great place to stop for food, drink or take away for visitors to The nearby Ivinghoe Beacon, the Grand Union Canal or The National Trust Ashridge Forrest

We booked in advance and our table was ready and waiting. The bar had a good selection of beers and the kids were offered a large jug of squash. The menu was varied with a large list of specials on the blackboard which we ordered from. The kids all had the kids pizza's, which were huge and really tasty. I opted for a spinach and gorgonzola tart which was amazing and my wife had a chicken pie. The lovely waitress informed us that her dad had made them that morning, making me think this is a family running this pub.All in all a great meal, great quality and very good portions. The menu included a selection of Dutch starters that I'd not seen on a menu before. Four of us chose one each and shared them. Lovely. This pub was really busy at 5.00 on a wet October Sunday afternoon, giving it a lovely vibrant locals atmosphere. The staff were polite, friendly and efficient. A few decent ales on the bar and the main courses were fine, not food from a chain menu but some,at least, appeared home made/prepared. Very nice. The only downside was that we had booked a table for six at 5.00 but, when we arrived, it was occupied. The staff took our order and apologised, offering to push two tables together to accommodate us. We were in no big rush so said we were happy to wait. The table we had been allocated was a nice long window table. However, it was over half an hour before our table was vacated, much longer than we had anticipated. Had we been on a schedule this could have been a problem. What's the point of booking? That said, the food, service and atmosphere was all good.

We went here for a meal on Valentines night. A meal here has been on our to do list for a while as we were so pleased to read how a little village had supported it's local. We were surprised that it wasn't fully booked but given its village location on a cold Sunday evening maybe not so strange. The pub does not look special, but neat and practical. The staff were friendly and efficient. Our main comment was on the quality of the food. Although a small menu there was enough choice plus some specials. We both had three courses and would give ten stars for the quality and presentation of the food. The wine list was also quite small but contained some very nice wines, unusually all available by the glass. The service was a little slow for which they apologised but given that it was a busy night and we were in no hurry this was excusable. So in summary 5 stars from both of us.

Decided to go to The Village Swan for a post-Xmas meal with family. We had been a couple of times in the past and the atmosphere and food had always been excellent. When we arrived we were informed that there were three roast options (beef, pork or chicken) and a selection of specials. On the board included Beef stew (£9.95) and a sirloin steak priced at £10.95. We all agreed that this was exceptional value for the steak and as such 5 of our party ordered this main meal. Three of the party ordered the beef stew.5 minutes after placing our order the waitress returned to inform us that the beef stew was actually lamb ragout (which was odd as specials were written on a chalk-board and appeared to be changed daily). Those who had ordered the dish all then changed to another option. The food arrived fairly promptly, although the steaks did take another 5 minutes compared with other meals. This was because we were informed they all had the different cooking times (although I hasten to add that the well done steak then arrived first of these!!). Whilst eating our meals the waitress told us we had ordered the last of the steaks and then proceeded to wipe off both this and the beef stew from the chalkboards The food was as ever exceptional and everybody agreed that their dish had been well cooked and tasty. We ordered desserts (which again arrived in a rather staggered fashion) and then requested the bill. Upon receipt of this we saw that the steaks were each priced at £19.95. My father queried this with the waitress who apologised but insisted the till had registered the price as £19.95 and would ask the chef to clarify this. The chef then arrived at our table and in an abrupt manner announced that the steak price was £19.95 and if we refused to pay this price he would call the police. We explained that 5 of us has independently seen the price as £10.95 on the chalk board (which as previously stated has been erased as we ate our meals) and was it possible that this had been incorrectly written on the board. The chef's manner was incredibly (and with hindsight suspiciously) aggressive, and when I asked whether he was accusing us of lying he looked me straight in the eye and exclaimed 'yes, you are a liar!'.Because we had a relative with us who was over 90 and a young child, we simply paid the price of £19.95 (amounting to an additional £45.00 to our bill), but clearly such an incident leaves a bitter taste after what had been an enjoyable meal and a nice opportunity to catch up with relatives post Christmas. As a consequence we will not be returning and we would advise people to be extremely wary/take photographic evidence of specials boards as the timing of this set of events does seem conveniently planned and may be something which other diners could experience in the future. We have to say it is also a real shame because the food is excellent at this place and our waitress/barmaid was very attentive and amiable. However, the attitude of the chef/management implies little to no regard for customer service or value and sadly this will mean a loss of custom in the future.

Have used this pub for social drinks with friends and the occasional meal and never disappointed. Excellent beers and choice of spirits. The Dutch snacks are a must. A proper country pub. Beautiful.

Nipped in here to seek refuge from the downpour (British summer!!). Was welcomed very warmly and our 3 year old daughter was given some colouring books to keep her busy (and she soon made friends with the owners family). The barman was really friendly (as were the owners and their family). This, to me, is what a ‘traditional village pub’ is all about. Friendly staff, good beer, good food and a traditional, warm and relaxing environment. Lovely place to visit if you're passing by. Would certainly go back (and being fairly local, we definitely will be!)

We took two friends with us for an evening meal. It was the first visit for all of us. We were all very happy with our meals, all chose something different. They were served together by a friendly waitress who was very apologetic for our rather long wait, the only criticism, but they were very busy. We agreed that we would go again.

Had a great dinner with family and friends after a day of torrential rain on the campsite. The food and beer were excellent and they even provided a clothes rail next to a warm radiator. for our sodden clothes making an uncomfortable day end most aggreably.

I visited yesterday with my partner for a bit of lunch somewhere different. We came away feeling completely chilled. What a great place! The service was super friendly and the food. . . Well what a treat!! With some traditional Dutch food up for grabs, I would definitely recommend coming here. Perfect for couples, families or even flying solo.My partner had the special of (an enormous) BBQ chicken pizza which had been made in a traditional pizza oven and I had the coolest sandwich i've ever had. I can't remember the name of it which is really bugging me. It looked like fish fingers, but it was some kind of beef stew covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried, served with English mustard in a white bap, a super tasty side salad and crisps. It was absolutely amaaaazing! We both really enjoyed our time here and would absolutely come back, thank you for treating us so well!!!

Really impressed with the Village Swan. We had a group of 9 adults turn up at 8.30pm with no booking and were really well looked after right until we finished dessert at half ten!Location - fantastic little village with idyllic views. The pub itself in on the 'main road' but given its a little village this saw the odd car every 10 minutes. We sat outside in the garden - very nice with a kids area at the end. Inside was very classy with a traditional rustic pub feel to it. Food - quality was very good and the portion size was really impressive as well. Beefy Nachos stole centre stage as was enough to feed an army! Service - our two waitresses were a highlight, both were pleasant and funny and nothing was too much trouble. As time went on and it got darker they came out with lanterns then open candles to provide us with more light as we stayed out in the garden. All in all we were very impressed, will return and thought it was fantastic value for what we had.

A real local with good ale and decent wines. The hosts are Dutch which makes the food a little more interesting, and the traditional fish and chips on a Thursday night is with market fresh cod.Recommended.

Returning from a visit to Bletchley Park we stumbled on The Village Swan. Expecting a standard pub menu we were pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of various Dutch and Indonesian dishes. ALL the dishes were clearly made on the premises and the service we received from the young couple behind the bar and the chef (owner?) was friendly and helpful. We had the Pork Satay and one portion between two was more than enough, tasty and well cooked. We will be back to try other dishes and will make sure we are hungry!

We had lunch here several months ago and it was really nice with good 'pub grub' and we said we would return. However today was not good. One choice was not available to begin with so an alternative was offered. The fish and chip option was very mediocre. We were the only people in the restaurant for quite a while and then a very large party arrived and we were totally forgotten! We would have ordered dessert if it had been offered. Eventually after a long wait we decided to settle our bill and my husband was told sorry we forgot you!

Tried the Village Swan for a Sunday family lunch (6 adults) based on the reviews here, the welcome for dogs mentioned on their website and the close proximity to the Ashridge Estate. We weren't disappointed. What we found was plenty of parking and a great welcome. The food was good and the service excellent. On the food, we had expected the full menu to be available but what was offered was beef/pork/lamb/turkey roast. We are unsure if this is normal for a Sunday but it wasn't a problem as the choice of meats meant that everyone found something they wanted. We will return.

We booked for a Saturday lunch time family get together without ever being here before. What a great find! the menu was varied and imaginative with something for everyone. all the meals we had were tasty, hot (except the salads!) and nothing was too much trouble for them to do. I would recommend the homemade pies, and the lovely variety of salad too. Thank you for making our family time so enjoyable.

I arrived only 5 mintues after they opened for food and such a differemt experience to the Rose and Crown 'tasteless fat soaked sponge' disguised as fish and chips.I watched the beer pulled from the pump to go to the kitchen for the batter. FRESH.The fish was cruchy amd tasty and all with pleasant conversation from the lady behind the bar. This pub is owned by the Village to preserve it for everyones benefit so its a worthy cause all round.

My uncle took us there for lunch on the Bank Holiday Monday. We were expecting the usual pub grub but were very surprised at the interesting menu. I decided to try Shoarma, which is thin sliced pork loin seasoned with Eastern herbs and stir fried peppers served with garlic sauce, salad and chips. The pork was lovely crispy on the outside but tender within. It was the best meal In have had for a long time. My Uncle had the fish and chips which he said was really good, my husband the Steak and Ale pie which he thoroughly enjoyed and our daughter the Dutch Satay which was marinated pork tenderloin topped with homemade satay sauce served with pickled cabbage, prawn crackers, salad and chips . Again an excellent choice. Even the sandwiches were good, our granddaughter wanted an Egg Mayo sandwich, she was offered a choice of bread and when it can it also had lettuce and cucumber in it which delighted her. It was a large portion and she could not eat it all but the rest of us left no waste. It you enjoy the atmosphere of a good, friendly pub but want something a bit different to eat I would heartily recommend this pub. All four generation were happy.

Having moved into the village a few years ago, we'd looked forward to sampling the Village Swan's offerings. When we first arrived all was well, then everything changed and Chintz Hell arrived. I swear I'd never seen so many cherubs in my life! Some of the photographs on T.A. still show the strange decor. Fast forward to 2014/5 - Patrick & Fanny with their young family have arrived from The Netherlands to serve the most delicious Traditional British Food as well as some tasty, temping Dutch treats. They've altered their opening times, employed local staff and created a welcoming atmosphere...no mean feet in less than 8 months.Having now visited a handful of times for lunch, I can honestly say you'd be hard pressed to find a tastier meal. Last Saturday, my family were re- United after many months apart, we enjoyed a hearty lunch with desserts. Their paninis, baguettes and burgers all delighted. My eldest daughter and my other half had the Stilton & Beef Pie saying it was spectacular. Their bread and butter pudding is to die for as is the sticky toffee pudding! We don't eat out as often as we used too, and even though The Village Swan isn't cheap it is definitely GOOD VALUE, QUALITY FOOD AND SERVICE. Long may the Dutch invasion last.

My wife and I had an impromptu evening out and picked the nearby Village Swan, which we'd seen while out house-hunting. Along with a great pint of "Tribute" we were offered an abridged menu due to a run on food earlier in the day - but the choice was still substantial and varied. My wife's request for a dairy-free option was dealt with effectively and without difficulty. The food arrived in good time and I can recommend the steak pie with port and stilton, which came with a good portion of mash and sauteed vegetables. The slight downside is that the dining area is tucked away around a corner leaving you feeling left out of the Pub's good atmosphere.Overall a good experience which we aim to repeat.

We booked a Sunday lunch and had one vegetarian in our party. The staff could not have been more accommodating giving several options and making a nut roast especially which was very tasty. Everyone else had a choice of Turkey, Beef or Lamb which all came with a good selection of vegetables and appropriate sauces. Portion sizes were perfect for us.We then all had a warmed chocolate fudge cake and shared a Dutch mini pancake dessert which were scrummy. The pub had good selection of drinks including several real ale including Haresfoot sundial.

We were camping close by and really wanted a warm dry evening....The Village Swan ticked all the boxes....warm welcome, great beer and fabulous food. We had two Dutch nibbles which were delicious but unpronounceable! And then the Dutch satay and mixed grill....WOW! Meat was tender and perfectly cooked, the taste of the satay was divine ...highly recommended :)

Stopped by for lunch with the family and could not believe the poor food quality. The burger was a grease bomb and cooked to death. The fish and chips the worst in my life time the fish certainly did in vain. The serving staff were young but really not concerned. Will not see us again

Visited this pub after giving it a wide berth for a year or so after previous disappointment. It's now changed hands and the transformation is amazing. Warm welcome, traditional but uncluttered bar and seating, great outdoor space. The menu was perfect for our needs as we were cycling and wanted light bites to keep us going, we choose a selection of Dutch nibbles that arrived a few minutes later nicely presented with a couple of different dips. The food was tasty and hot. We also ordered coffee which was excellent. Looks like decent beers on offer too but sadly couldn't check these out on this occasion! Also on the menu were sandwiches and crisps for a fiver and a children's offering (hurray!) other Dutch main courses and English main causes looked tempting for another time. The hosts were friendly and efficient. Highly recommended if you live in the surrounding villages or are walking at Ivinghoe Beacon, or staying at town farm camp site.

Four of us went to the Village Swan at Ivinghoe Aston for a meal last week. We were warmly welcomed by all the friendly staff there on our arrival. The pub is quite small but is comfortable and quite quaint. Not sure what the wine was like my wife was given a sample to see if suited - and it did ! The menu is no way an extensive list of meals and is somewhat limited but there is also a choice available from the specials board - certainly enough for us to choose from. All the meals were good and tasty, well presented and served fresh and hot. We were asked if the meals were good whilst eating the same which was a nice touch. The staff went out of their way to be friendly and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable night. Not only would I recommend the village Swan we will go there again if we are in the area.

New Dutch proprietor from 13/5/14. Charming young man who runs the bar & beautiful young cousin who serves the food. Mother of proprietor in the kitchen certainly knows how to cook. I was leading a walking party of 16 and it was the first meal they had served having only taken over the previous evening. The food was excellent as agreed by all and some of the best food experienced.. The service was charming and the bar/restaurant has had a nice makeover since the displayed photograph was taken. Very close to Ivinghoe Beacon and Ashridge & nice field walks nearby. They deserve to succeed and I will certainly return again and one in my group who said it was the best vegetable lasagne ever has already reserved a table for a party of friends.

We came across this little gem when out for a walk in Wendover. Although the outside seating allocation was full due to the lovely weather, we easily found a spot inside. We both ordered the large breakfast, which arrived promptly. For the price, you got a very good portion. The black pudding was very tasty, the hash browns were perfectly crispy, the bacon was meaty with a nice margin of fat for flavour; also, perfectly cooked eggs, well cooked sausages etc. The food was piping hot too. Our only criticism would be the use of semi-skimmed milk. Recent studies show that full-fat dairy products are protective against diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Large numbers of people and cafes are switching back to whole milk. I recommend you use whole milk too for health and flavour reasons, as it makes coffee etc. taste much creamier and you need less of it!

Couple plus adult son. Booked in here as a motorhome stopover. Table booked for the evening. Landlord was happy for us to park up with permission in the morning so we could spend the day with our son who’s moved in locally. Lovely olde worldy country pub. Clean, friendly, proper home cooking & prices. Play area for kids outside and covered seating also outside. Peaceful nights sleep on sloping grass. Defo recommend and defo return.

Set in beautiful grounds, Hartwell House is a unique hotel. Steeped in history we felt as if we had stepped into a Jane Austin novel. The house is beautifully restored and filled with antiquities. We loved being able to relax in its library after dinner. The spa is in a separate building and quite fabulous with a good sized pool with jacuzzi. The views from our 2nd floor bedroom were stunning and our room extremely spacious, even though it was not one of their premium rooms. We had afternoon tea and dinner and both were served with attention to detail and with elegant silver service. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The service we experienced was friendly and professional. We felt very well looked after.
