Waffle was excellent but thats where it ended. Waitress had a proper attitude, apple pie was almost stone cold, custard came in a micro pot and even though they knew we were unhappy made us pay for the pleasure of a ruined visit. Wont be going back.

Have been here several times for coffee, cake and lunches. The soups are gluten free and there is always GF bread to go along with it. The GF toasted sandwiches, as are all the items on the menu, freshly made. My other half loves the black pudding rolls, the black pudding comes from a local butcher. The dog loves the black pudding too, dogs are very welcome. The choice of teas is amazing, lovely loose leaf teas in a big pot. There is always a GF cake on offer.

Unassuming little care, old fashioned inside, oil tablecloths, pine farmhouse chairs. The food we were assured is all home made. 3 soup choices & enough variation on the menu to suit everyone. Cakes are very good. The bread is fab. The chowder soup excellent- you won’t have room for a main ! Prices are reasonable and the owners are very nice. Don’t drive past to get a better cafe in this village as there isn’t one

This really is one of the very few places that I HAVE NOTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT. The village coffee shop is I have to be honest, somewhere I had not tried until recently. But boy am I glad we did. I can honestly say that, when going out for lunch, would poss look at bar lunches in Gullane or North Berwick, but after 2 great visits to the village coffee shop, when going out for lunch we will be heading there. Even if going for coffee etc will be first choice. The couple running the coffee shop could not be more down to earth, and friendly, oh and they are also fantastic with kids too. We both times sat down to a clean table, were attended to quickly. After ordering told what was cooked fresh, so would be slightly longer (not a problem). Was not to much time to wait. And wow.. The portions were huge, especially when compared to the v reasonable prices. The staff were also willing to adapt the menu to suit. Food was not only served piping hot and mouth watering delicious. But was served with a genuinely friendly, fun couple running the place. Again staff were amazing with kids. So I know I've went on a bit, but to summarise down to earth, gen friendly couple, running the best place to have breakfast, brunch def lunch, poss dinner in Gullane and surround. Very very tasty food, huge portions, great prices, decent coffee etc, lovely cakes, ice cream for after. Family friendly, amazing with kids and so clean. Even the bathroom goes above and beyond. If you are in or near Gullane and you want lunch Forget the rest, head to the Village coffee shop, I will be def cont too

All the food is freshly prepared for you so not a “fast food” place but somewhere to enjoy freshly prepared food by a couple who take pride in what they do. And the food, wow! I had the quarter pounder with bacon, brie and cranberry - beautifully presented with salad and fries and absolutely delicious. I sampled the curry and it was spot on too. I'm reliably informed the lasagne and toastie were fabulous but no one was willing to relenquish as much as a bite! Desserts looked wonderful but will have to try next time as I couldnt have eaten amother bite. Excellent coffee, lots of tea choices and plenty of soft drink options. We lived in Gullane some years ago and regularly return for visits to friends and therefore always expect high standards of the village amenities. All 3 of us were extremely disappointed and we agreed, the coffee was probably the worst we'd ever had! We should have commented at the time but were in a rush!We should also comment that other customers seemed to be enjoying food. But to be called 'The Village Coffee House' should bring expectations of a very good cup of coffee! A final comment is that the aprons of staff were dirty - rather disappointing!

We made a special detour given the wonderful food last time but alas it is under new management. We waited 35 mins for a soup combo and a burger. Burger was awful, toastie was good but carrot and coriander soup a disaster. Not a hint of coriander, no seasoning and tasted like it had been burnt. We asked the waitress to remove it and on reaching the kitchen, all the cafe could hear was "what's wrong with it?" A woman then appeared at our table requesting an explanation and given one, she replied, "we always under season our food. You may think it's burnt but it's not" and stomped off!! We were not charged for the soup but were asked if we had enjoyed our experience? We did not appreciate their attitude and would not recommend it to anyone.

Mmmm not sure what to make of this place now!! It's under new and I'm afraid there needs to be some changes. First impression going in, I think the table behind the door needs to go, quality not quantity is needed here. The other tables I feel could be enough for the staff here to handle and that table away would allow better access for the disabled. The tea was great as it is real tea not bagged tea. My friend had a toastie which looked good but she said she'd had better. I had a black pudding roll and have to say it was really good. The black pudding was beautiful so don't change supplier there. I ask had a bit carrot cake, although it was good you really can't beat homemade as with it being a small village coffee shop you would expect there to be homemade cakes, tray bake etc. The staff were nice and friendly although I feel a uniform would be better ie tee-shirt. It would give the place a more personal touch. Maybe brighten up the table covers too as although the place is quirky it is a pretty dull coffee shop. Maybe put your own stamp on it. These are only small points and it wouldn't stop me returning again. You guys are just starting out and finding your feet. But with some little changes, a big impact could be made. Best of Luck with your new venture.

We popped in after a walk on Gullane bents on Sunday afternoon. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on there being new management in place so one would expect to be left with a good impression but unfortunately we weren't. On using the WC facilities prior to eating there was a grubby, soggy towel for patrons to use..it looked as if it had been there for days...not a good sign in a food outlet. We were then served in dribs and drabs with stewed warm tea together with an array of shop bought cakes and scones. When we asked for water to top up the tea , it came in a small milk jug...oh dear.. Apparently it had been a busy day but we were not alone in thinking things could improve as one of the two staff on duty was held up for ages with other patrons making a complaint but also advising on how to improve things. Would I visit again ? Maybe but then maybe not....Management needs to up its game and quick!.

The coffee shop is small and quirky and quite dated internal furnishings. We were informed that it was soup or soup to start..! So soup it was. The chunky veg was stillCrunchy and this was not nice.!The main courses were considerably better than the starter but I was very disappointed as my rib eye steak was definitely a piece of frying steak.!Sadly I can't find much to comment on further and I can't recommend this as a place to eat.. We (Husband and I) spent a couple of pleasant hours in Gullane today (Friday). The Coffee House is an eclectic mix of furnishings with approx 8 tables and seems to be very popular not only with locals, but passing traffic. The "infamous" Gavin, chef and owner is not as intimidating and loud as was suggested by other reviewers and I found him to be efficient and quite endearing. The service by Gavin and his one Waitress was great which makes me wonder what some of the other reviewers were on about. It is small so of course you are going to hear the phone calls. We both had excellent home-made Potato & Leek soup (very large portion), followed by the Rib-eye Steak (first time I haven't been asked how I would like my steak cooked) and although mine was cooked a bit more than I would have liked, but I did enjoy it and my other half ate what I couldn't and thoroughly enjoyed it. The mixed salad that accompanied it was really good and made such a difference from the usual mixed greens plonked on your plate, it was also served with a tasty dressing. Coffee was a pleasant surprise, really good. Next time will save a bit of room for the gorgeous looking desserts. One thing that was a bit distracting, a local lady arrived with her dog (we love animals), she proceded to have a running conversation with her poodle as though it were a person.

The staff were very welcoming, we had the two varieties of soup on offer which were excellent. My first Scotch pie, very good, and excellent coffee too. The hot chocolate was spectacular!

Popped in for a coffee whilst on holiday in the area but after seeing the menu we stayed for lunch. Simple home cooking done well. Friendly and welcoming - highly recommended.

Went for lunch and whilst waiting for a menu, could see the young waitress in the kitchen looking at her mobile phone. Eventually, she came with this (not very friendly attitude) and we ordered sandwiches which took over half an hour to arrive. This waitress didn't come back to ask if everything was ok or ask if we wanted anything else when we finished but she seemed to have time to check her phone many times whilst in the kitchen! Have been there before when the man (the owner) has been there and always received fast, friendly service. What a difference when he is not there.

Nice village tea (coffee) rooms. A good example of what was more typical in years gone by. We shared a pot of tea; hard to go wrong but nevertheless after our coastal walk from Aberlady it was welcome and refreshing. Evelyn particularly enjoyed her fruit scone; so much so she ordered another! A good selection of eats including light meals. Reasonably priced. Judging by some of the memorabilia on the walls they are frequented by golf pros playing the numerous courses around this area. Friendly chatty ladies behind, or more accurately next to, the counter without being obtrusive. I'm not 100% sure but this might be the only establishment of its sort in Gullane. But if you're up that way and needing a cuppa, you won't go wrong.

Had a spot of lunch in here, the food was nice. We had the homemade soup and a sandwich for less than £6 both was spot on. Very friendly staff. The likes of Graeme McDowell have eaten here when the open was on. If your passing worth a stop off

Lovely food and coffees/cakes. Popped in before a game of golf.Only thing would say is owner should take his phone calls away from the customers in the cafe Seemed to berating someone on the phone about a member of staff being absent, a bit embarrassing really.

The coffee house almost sits on a bend as you drive into Gullane so keep a eye open for it, good old fashion place to have a coffee real friendly owner.

Locateed on the way into Gullane from Aberlady. This place serves a reasonably priced array of cafe treats. Excellent staff who are very attentive. Very small and you need to be quick or lucky to get a seat. Highly recommend if you're looking for a quick bite to eat without too much fuss.

This was my third visit and I was not disappointed. The leek and potato soup was excellent as was the ham and cheese toasty which followed. The portions are so generous that I had no room left for even a small slice of the delicious looking cakes but because I was not driving I had a couple of glasses of Ernie Els wine with my meal which rounded it off nicely.

Arrived at the Village Coffee House today for some lunch. Me and my gran both ordered an all day breakfast with teas. The teas were lovely and came with a tea strainer and tea leaves, which is an experience I've never had. The cooked breakfasts were lovely and cooked to a high standard although I was not fully satisfied with the service, which was slow. The toast to accompany the breakfast was not provided till we were nearly finished our fried breakfast. The cafe is a little overpriced. But overall I enjoyed it.

The first time we met Gavin (the owner) was on the street, he stood outside his little coffee shop, in a pink chef suit. We were looking for another restaurant at that time, Gavin overheard our conversation and, imprompted, pointed to us where the place was. Nice guy! we thought and moved on. Few mintutes later, we returned to his shop, the other shop was not open at that time so we decided to try this "nice guy"'s shop, or maybe we were impressed by his pink chef suit - blends well with the style of his coffee shop. I'm not going to share with you the details of what we ordered and experienced in Gavin's shop that day and the next following days, you can find those in the othet review. But "yes", we kept returning till we left, you should go and try yourself. A few thing to highlight: 1)Gavin is a real chef, you can order real food like ribeye steak and spanish tomato soup for lunch in his coffee shop and they are nice; 2)Gavin is a real golfer, he loves the game tons and he loves life more. He operates the little coffee shop and also organises golf tournament to raise funds for children cancer for the region.A man is loved not because of how tall he is but how often how he bends backward to teach, to care and to help. Gavin is a tough guy, but a really lovable one, he made Gullane a very special place for us! Thanks, Gavin!Zachary, Carol and "PING" :)

A selection of homemade soups served with loads of bread and butter. A good selection of main courses and desserts, including a handful of daily specials, and a big selection of home baking. The quality is excellent in all departments and the servings are big. The service was first class and the surroundings are very pleasant (not a hint of golf in evidence). I'll be back.

Enjoyed a lovely tuna mayonnaise sandwich with a large side salad and crisps, so fresh and delicious. I have visited this cafe before and have always been very happy with both the food and friendly, efficient service. The portions are very substantial and may be too large for some! I would never complain though that my plate was too full!! The spicy meatballs with rice and salad is really tasty but make sure you're hungry! The prices are very reasonable too.

We called in last Sunday afternoon. Within ten minutes we were served with our tea and coffee, but it took thirty minutes to serve us two sconesThere were a total of ten in the little coffee shop, on a Sunday after 2pm, two people were in the kitchen and one young girl serving, very polite waitress but very slow in the kitchen. There is an Italian coffee shop next door, think we will try next door next time.

The Coffee Shop is small but the owner and staff offer a warm welcome, and the service is swift. Our soup and pie was excellent, as were the drinks. This small establishment gets a big, enthusiastic recommendation from this household.

Pretty disappointing dinner here. Came and ordered two steak baguettes, each costing almost £20. They came covered in a caremelised onion chutney and so much melted cheese and yet, were still so bland. Bad bread, bad steak, bad cheese. It came with a watery chimichurri sauce for dipping, which didn't really feel thought through with the rest of the dish. Won't be back.
