Ravelston House Hotel in East Lothian

Lovely clean rooms, plenty of tea, coffee, milk, and sugar. Comfortable bed. Lovely cooked breakfast . Staff very friendly and helpful.

We spent an evening at the Ravelston House restaurant and it was very nice. The simple choice but the excellent and copious dishes for a reasonable price. Yes I compare prices with France 😀 perfect service and smiling and friendly staff. I had a Balmoral chicken...🤤 excellent, my first time but I will have it again without hesitation. My daughter Mac and cheese, huge and very good and my friend shrimp fritters also excellent. So I will come back

Some of the staff found it hard to smile 😃 I know they were busy. No need for the comment. You're not the only table to serve. It was a 90th birthday. I had mac n cheese it was nice.

The Scottish breakfast was absolutely delicious and the service excellent. The food was cooked using quality ingredients and was great value for money. Vinnie was exceptionally friendly and welcoming and Kerry looked after us very well. The restaurant was clean and efficiently run.

I had dinner there. The food was good! What was remarkable was the two waitresses— super kind, polite, and efficient, which made my evening great.

The best pub food in the UK! Great price (only £16 for two courses), delicious dishes (fantastic pie! Thank goodness for seasoned vegetables instead of bland ones! 😋) and EXCELLENT service. The waitress truly enhanced our experience. She let us know what is the true Scottish service!

Nice food reasonable prices friendly staff

Had meal in pub area as we had our dog, meal was delicious, service was excellent. The wall seats were all marked & needed good deep clean, was in 2 minds whether to sit on them. Toilets x 2 beautiful but far too small could hardly move in them but wash basin area was huge ? Didn't make sense as wasted area.

Went for lunch with 4 members of my family, we sat in the bar area, seats were really dirty, place could do with a revamp. Food was disgusting, we ordered 4 two courses and 1 main course. It was half fish and chips, mines was luke warm, one member got a tiny bit of fish, wouldn't feed a sparrow. The person behind the bar was too busy stuffing her face and having a soft drink. Will definitely never be back it's a dump.

Disappointing stay at the Ravelston. We were there for 3 nights. Had to ask for the heating to be turned on, on the first day. Then discovered no iron or board in the room, had to collect from the hotel bar. TV didn’t work, only got a message saying no signal (couldn’t be bothered telling them, just watched Netflix on my iPad). Had to ask again to put the heating on, this time on the 3rd day. Seems the timer had malfunctioned, but they sorted it immediately. Little niggle - had to jam the room door to stop it banging every time someone opened the front door of the hotel (it was windy and this blew right upstairs, rattling the door).

I stayed a night here, with breakfast included. The hotel is lovely and the rooms are recently refurbished, spacious and comfortable. The modern shower was one of the best I've known. Breakfast (included in the price) was exceptional. I had the Full Scottish, cooked to order to perfection and a great selection of high-quality items. Staff are very helpful and friendly, and the general ambience of the hotel is relaxed and welcoming. Highly recommended!

The assistant manager advised us that we could only have mashed potatoes with our meals (whoever heard of mashed potato with macaroni?) Anyway, we agreed to have the alternative. After waiting over 1 HOUR, I asked the assistant manager, "Where is our meals?" He replied, "I promise you it'll be just five minutes more!" After a further 15 minutes, I decided to leave and asked for a refund. Then miraculously, our meal turned up after several other groups who had arrived after us had received their meals. My party had left with the refund, but it resulted in us being late for our show. I will never return to this place that can only be described as a poor 'Fawlty Towers!' The staff are all miserable, who are not very welcoming and it is no wonder they have a high staff turnover!

A little far from the castle where we were going to see the tattoo but just don't take the wrong bus Don't take bus 26 The stop is in front of the hotel Or prefer Uber Pretty Scottish room and very good meal taken in the pub atmosphere The service is lovely especially Ewan. And very generous breakfast

Same as Wendy’s experience two weeks ago - great rooms, solid service, nice place - but the thumping from the bar downstairs is rough.

I had a beautiful stay at Ravelston House. The staff were excellent, especially Winny at breakfast and the assistant manager. Winny was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and suggested many great places for us to visit. Overall, it was a fantastic experience!

We have been here often on Groupon for breakfast and at first it was really good. The male waiter is v hard working and helpful and gets little support it appears. Most recently 24/8 it was a busy and service was slower as a result. Owner (I think) helped out (poorly). Our usual waiter was vv busy. I'm not sure if there has been a change in kitchen but toast was practically white (this was changed but...) and breakfast items were quite cold.....we complained and had a reduction in cost but, really necessary?

Zero stars. The wifi was out 3 of the 5 nights we were there, and was spotty when it was on. When we complained they didn't give us any compensation (we would have taken a meal or a few drinks in the pub) and as working professionals from our of country this was a severe hindrance. They didn't notify us of 2 loud weddings that went past midnight. The guests were shouting up and down the stairs, slamming doors, and generally being very disruptive and disrespectful. The security guard did nothing and the staff were rude when we asked them to keep it down, remember this was close to 1am when this happened. The breakfast was decent but one of the servers we had was really rude. The shower was really dirty with lots of black grime which was unpleasant. Would not recommend or return.

We stayed here for 3 nights, from Thursday evening to Sunday. The staff was very friendly, the food was okay. The first night we slept well, it was very quiet. A party room is also used at weekends. It's a shame that we didn't know this in advance because even after 12 o'clock at night there was still a lot of noise and nuisance from party goers who came into the sleeping area.

Lovely and cozy room. Great breakfast. Would give them 5 stars, but the music downstairs was a major disturbance when trying to sleep. I’m a musician and I can sleep through a lot but the thumping of bass could be heard through the walls. Perhaps something that should be more explicitly communicated before booking. Room for improvement. ;)

Very good nice spot for transport in and out the city , good for the kids and partys meals are great, but plenty fresh air being in mussleburgh. mind mussleburgh day at the races fantastic day out.

Very nice hotel with spacious rooms and excellent service. The location is also great: you can get to Edinburgh quickly by bus, the beach is around the corner and there is a Lidl nearby for smaller purchases

Was part of a hearse and attended a wake at this establishment for Richard mowat let the staff know I was there for the wake and they said fine as I was not in a bay but to the side getting chased for £170 parking fine absolutely outrageous. They said since I didn't buy a drink I have no evidence but I don't drink I was provided with free coffee and food at the wake it's a disgrace having to be threatened with court no regard for people dealing with loss. I spoke to the Asian girl and she said it was fine.

Nice little place. Friendly staff. Good drink and food selection. Only downsides are doors make a lot of noise in the morning downstairs and strong smell of the downstairs toilets. Good bus route connections to Edinburgh and lots of shops nearby.

Faulty Towers at its very best. Ordered two large breakfasts at £9.95 each a tea and a coffee. Waited a long time and breakfast finally arrived we were both famished. Looked at the plate no sausages 😧 oh dear they must have forgot. Spoke to the waitress who said ‘ oh dear how did I miss the sausages on the plates they’re so big. Another waitress came and said ‘ we’ve no sausages so he gave you an extra bit of bacon’. The original waitress returned saying ‘ he said he’s no sausages but can give you an extra bit of black pudding. We just looked at each other and said no thanks. The pointing my review is I’ve never been in a restaurant where the chef runs out of an ingredient but doesn’t even tell the customer 🤷‍♀️ just assumes they won’t notice and then pretends to put extra on the plate. ( which he hadn’t). Had we not mentioned it no one would have said a word. Waited ages to pay walked from the restaurant to the bar twice, rang the bell still no one. Eventually a waitress arrived and took the money. We were given the tea and coffee free. To be honest it was more laughable than anything.

Good food at fantastic prices, staff are friendly and helpful. With the addition of the huge sliding windows the dining room is hugely improved, benefitting from what was a dark, claustrophobic area into a light and pleasant eating area.

I was looking for somewere nice to take my son for lunch yesterday and seen that The Ravelston had a deal on 1 adults meal purchased, kids eat free. On arrival I was told it was selected meals only and there was a small menu available for kids. My sons portion was small, I could have got a larger burger or meal from a fast food restaurant. My macaroni was bland, tbh it tasted like a can of macaroni and parts of it was slightly warm, the rest was cold. I was very disappointed 😞 On a positive note, the waiter was friendly and the service was fast. But I can honestly say, we won't be back anytime soon for food.

We were back to the Ravelston House Hotel for the second time for lunch on Monday the 17th. I ordered the Fish & Chips and my partner had the Mac & Cheese both were absolutely delicious and the staff were very polite and friendly. We'll be back again.

Went for father's day meal, and definitely was not worth the money. We where seat for about 10mins before they even asked if we wanted to order. They took a starter order but no drinks. It took about 10-15 minutes for the started to come out and still had no drinks. Finally when they took our main order it took about 30 minutes for that to arrive at the table. We were all disappointed with the portion size. These where more of a kids size portion than an adults. To pay £17.85 for a very small steak pie and chips is a joke. £2.95 for a kids fruit shoot also a disgrace. Don't get me wrong the food tasted nice but was definitely not worth the price. I will not be back here.

We stayed at ravelston house for 3 nights when visiting Edinburgh and had a Lovely time. The rooms are cozy, yet modern. The dining room and breakfast was also to our Liking. Special shout out to vinnie who took care of us every morning at breakfast. He whent above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and he gave great tips on restaurants and cocktail bars that were vegan friendly. The only slight downside is the distance to edinburgh, but there are very frequent buses that leaves from just outside the hotel.

We were looking for the biggest and most delicious fish and chips our whole road trip in Scotland. We got it here. It was great. A fantastic experience. The service is perfect.

First time visitor and found the hotel was faultless. Friendly staff, excellent food and relaxed atmosphere. We will certainly be back. We thought the prices were reasonable for the high quality of the food. Will certainly visit again.

Terrible service! Sought this place out as it was dog-friendly and visiting Musselburgh for the day. Bar waiter with glasses and tattoos couldn’t have cared less when we asked how to order. I asked for a water bowl for the dog and, as I was carrying two glasses of drinks outside I was told to come back for the dog bowl, no help. Ordered our food and two starters came (one of which was wrong but took it anyway), no cutlery, napkins or condiments. Had to go find someone who said they bring them. Waited until our food got cold, no one came back so ate with our fingers (scampi and spring rolls). Food was fine. Mains arrived, still no cutlery or condiments and were told by same barman that we’d have to go inside and pick them up ourselves! Luckily a younger barman spotted what we needed and was happy to bring them out to us. I complained about the service to the first barman/waiter who said nothing, no apologies. Afraid we won’t be back.

we spent our first night in Scotland here. We received a warm welcome and had a really nice time there. Vivien didn't let us miss anything. Thanks for that!

One meal was 30 minutes behind all the others and we sat around with empty glasses as the staff weren’t around and when I tried to complain they didn’t care there was no apology at all and when I asked for the bill they had charged for all the children’s meals that are advertised as free and still no apology. To finish on a positive the food was lovely.

Our Saturday Group came here for coffee. Delicious coffee and food. Service outstanding from Vinny. We will be back as booked.

The breakfast was good and the waitress was very polite, however, the night we stayed, there was live music until 23PM and I get it, it's a pub downstairs. But when one of the staff started hoovering at midnight, I lost the plot. I didn't expect to pay £125 to be unable to sleep at midnight because of someone hoovering. I've never come across this in any other accommodation I've stayed at. I am definitely not going back there.

i went here with my family and friends we arrived at 5:30pm had to wait 5 minutes for our table, we ordered our food and drinks they look longer than an hour to get our order to our table and a person in my party cut their fish into pieces so it would cool down quicker, they ate some of their fish and then found a black curly piece of hair inside of the fish. i wouldn’t recommend coming here!

Stayed over for our aniversary hotel was spotless we went for evening meal husband had fish chips which was pipping hot my meal of steak pie was cold so sent bk another came out and was the same cold so had no meal , yee they took it off our bill but it spoilt our aniversary, ive emailed hotel 4/5 times and never recieved any answers back, i find this unprovesional

We had an excellent lunch there

what a great place we, went for a comedy / history show with Bruce Fummey (check YouTube). We ate first in the lovely restaurant all the servers were brilliant great choice of foods and deals available. in the rest of the building there was a private sixtieth birthday party going on whilst in the bar live music was happening with a lively audience joining in, a great night.

We arrived to a warm welcome to a rather quiet but friendly bar. We struck it lucky when they said it was roast beef and Yorkshires today. Utterly brilliant quality. Gravy was wonderful and veg cooked just a tap to keep crunch. Will be back for another im sure.

We stayed overnight in this lovely pub. Check in was easy, just straight into the bar and was given the key. We stayed in Room 2. The bed was huge and comfy. The heating was on but not needed so easy to turn off. Not much view from the window but not really bothered about this. Enough storage and mirrors to get ready. Tea, coffee and biscoffs available in the room. Used the shower, impressive! Spacious shower with complimentary shower gel to use. There was a large group of us for meals, a variety of foods. We choose a selection - chicken balmoral (I had this, it was lovely!), steak pie, fish and chips. There was a wait for the food but we were busy chatting to notice too much 😁. There was a great singer entertaining us for the night between 8-11pm with a selection of varied songs which was lovely. There is a function room which was in use on the night. The only thing I'd say is that before, interval and after the show the bar was packed (not sure if there was a bar in the function room). Sometimes there was a long queue for the bar. Breakfast was outstanding and you could tell the meat was from a butchers. It was a great quality. The haggis and black pudding was the best. Overall a great place to stay and would highly recommend!

We have just been to a wedding reception yesterday 15th March and I have to say all staff were very attentive, polite and helpful. The wedding breakfast food was amazing and as a venue was lovely. Well done ravelston

Our son and his partner booked the function room for our grandson’s 1st birthday party, the room was freezing cold, we had to ask the manager to switch the heating on 3 times, he eventually did around an hour after we arrived & he had a lot of excuses as to why it wasn’t on each time we asked. I found his behaviour very odd & unhelpful, really not sure what his issue was. The heating then went off again half way through the party, it was very bizarre as the heating was on in the rest of the hotel. The Ravelston charge £75 for the hire of the room, this should more than cover the heating costs & I would have expected the room to be warm for us arriving. The buffet was very good & the majority of the staff were lovely, so 3 stars for that, I doubt we’d hire again because it was so cold

Arrived at 2.55pm for 3pm afternoon tea and we were informed that we were too early! Agreed to seat us. It was 2.31pm before any food arrived, and that was only because we had to chase it up, and the tea was already cold. They were not busy as the lunch service had finished and no food had come out of the kitchen after we had been seated The sandwiches were adequate and freshly made, the scones and brownies a bit dry and stale, and the other bought in items uninspiring.

Service was sooooo slow. Food (What was available - they seemed to have a lot out of stock), was nice, but GF options are next to zero; book of doom comes out; there was about 3 or 4 options, but at least one of those was weekend only. Won't be rushing back.

My brother went for his birthday dinner with his girlfriend, they staff went above and beyond to make sure he had the best time, from greeting him with a fully decorated table to even making customised cocktails designed for him, the food was lovely and they had a great selection to pick from. The staff made them feel welcomed and accommodated any of the requests they had no matter how big or small, what a lovely restaurant with even lovelier staff. Will definitely be returning again. Special thanks to Susan, Vinni and Janet, as well as Dean and the rest of the staff.

I basically don't write reviews, but on this occasion I felt it was necessary. How disappointed I was with my latest dining experience at the Ravelston. I am very sad to be writing this review. We haven't been to the Ravelston since the summer time. We used to dine there quite often but recently we haven't had a chance to go. You could say it was our 'go-to' restaurant in Musselburgh due to its friendly, cosy atmosphere and lovely staff, and the food has always been enjoyable. We decided to return for a small family celebration and we had been praising our past experiences to friends that very day. We were really looking forward to our meal. Sadly we were so disappointed. My husband ordered the calamari and we ordered two haggis bons bons starters. Approximately 3 mins later the starters arrived, as if they had been on standby. The calamari priced just under £8 for 7 rings was oily, soggy, luke warm and chewy. The haggis bons bons were also soggy and luke warm. The fish and chips were ok, but the fish was not up to its previous standard, which I had raved about that day being just as good as East Coast's fish for it's freshness and crispy batter. But the worst thing was the duck with cabbage and sweet potato puree, which I was so looking forward to! It was like eating a jam pudding - overly sweet and sickly. The kids who were with us had the pizza and chips. OMG! Last time the pizza base was hand made and tasty, and a fair size for a child's portion priced at just under £8. This time, we could see the pizza base was the ready made base you buy for cheap in Lidl, and the cheese (if it was proper cheese) was a funny colour for being mozzarella. It just slithered off the pizza in its entirety as the kids took their first bite, burning their wee chins in the process. Lots of chips, but the pizza was a portion for a 3 year old. Basically we couldn't wait to get the bill and leave. We were planning on having desert but we decided to skip it. The staff were really lovely and attentive, but they sadly didn't take on board our comments and report them to their manager. Maybe they did and he/she didn't bother. We were honest and voiced our disappointment about our meal, but the bill in the end was fully priced, so evidently our clear dissatisfaction didn't matter. Ravelston - what is going on with you? Ravelston you are going down hill, which is so sad as you have such potential! Please review yourself and get back on track, as we would really like to return, as we have had so many pleasurable dining experiences with you in the past. Wishing you all the best x

Had the haddock and chips, very dry and not a lot of flavour. £18. Wife had Macaroni, it was fine but the salad wasn’t edible, it was old. £15. Mother-in-law had chicken curry, the spice level wasn’t labelled and it was very spicy - had to down two glasses of water and couldn’t finish it. £18. Three disappointing meals. My wife was also brought the wrong meal with no apology, the waitress acted like we were inconveniencing her by asking for it to be corrected. Wouldn’t eat there again. Very average food, if not below average, for a premium price.

I cannot praise the manager and staff highly enough for their professional and kind service for my husband’s funeral tea. Nothing was too much trouble.

Had the unfortunate task of organising a funeral for a loved one recently and we chose The Ravelston for the function after the funeral. The team were fantastic and very supportive throughout the process. The venue ticked all our boxes and there wasn’t a single issue on the day. The staff did a great job catering for our 100+ guests and the price for the event was great value compared to other venues nearby. Thanks again to the team for making the day go so smoothly.

Joined a group of colleagues for a lunch. I was late so I was not informed that parking has to be registered. I received a £100 parking fine two weeks later. When I contacted Ravelston to ask them to sort it out they basically were not that interested and told me to deal with Britannia Parking and I should have noticed the signs in the Car Park. Fair dos, thats the type of establishment you are dealing with. Classy customer service.

Attended for Christmas party night, single non drinking female, car park was dark and parked my car, unable to see sign advising restricted parking, so even if did see sign was visiting premises, then get £100 parking fine, call them and told sign in dark car park and should have told reception was there, now need to contact Britannia parking to appeal, not impressed at all and won’t be visiting again

I had a first class Christmas dinner. Food was good quality, there was a great choice and the service was excellent. Also reasonably priced. I couldn’t fault anything about it.

I think this place was GREAT! Great staff, right from the beginning, LARGE clean room, great price! There was lively action going on downstairs. I was tired and went to bed :) . The noise from the bar COULD be heard in my room, but it didn't bother me. I would definitely recommend and WILL stay again when I go back to Edinburgh

Stayed for Bed and Breakfast . Great little hotel. Excellent value for money. Lovely, comfortable, spotlessly clean room. Nice decor. Superb shower in ensuite. Fab breakfast, good choices. All staff lovely, helpful, friendly. Would recommend and we will definitely be back .

Having been born and bred in Musselburgh, and had my wedding reception at the Ravelston, albeit some time ago, we decided to have lunch in the restaurant. Had to wait about 5 minutes before we got attention, then another few minutes before we were pointed to a table and “yous sit there”. Not a good start. In the time we were in the restaurant, to me, it was obvious that there wasn’t any staff training on customers relations. No politeness, no courtesy, not interested to see if you were enjoying your meal. About the meal, it was quite pleasant, except for the Eton Mess, which we were told was the chef’s sweet. The sweet arrived up in a tumbler, with a large spoon. It comprised of only thick cream, tiny piece of meringue and loads of raspberry sauce - not appetitising. I always thought that this sweet comprised of ice cream, cream, raspberries with pieces of meringue and slight decoration of raspberry sauce. Stupidly we didn’t ask for it to be deducted from our bill! I am so so disappointed about the lack of customer service from this long established hotel. Won’t be back.

First time visit here and we were hugely impressed. We had a few drinks in the bar, followed by a meal in the restaurant then back to the bar for more drinks. The staff in both the bar and restaurant were extremely friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make our visit most enjoyable. Food in the restaurant was excellent and the service was faultless. Can't recommend highly enough!

Perfect location for visiting the town and in particular the races. The bus for Edinburgh stops outside hotel but we opted for train and only 7 mins. Staff were welcoming, bedroom and bathroom were excellent. Very friendly team served us delightful breakfast.
