The Viceroy in Carlisle

The food was spectacular like always. Third time coming in swear it gets better every time. Staff are absolutely brilliant very friendly and polite. I cannot give it enough praise one of the best places to eat at in Carlisle for me anyways. Please come give such a brilliant place a go to give them support.

Ordered a takeaway. All in all not very good. Portion sizes of pakora very small and also not very nice. Tikka massala was WAY too sweet ...inedible. Like eating a chicken pudding! Garlic nan was pretty chewy and not very well fired. Chips were soggy. South Indian Garlic was okay. Best part of order. Very disappointed.

Fantastic place to eat, chuckle brothers who waited & served us were so curteous funny and nothing was any trouble for them Food drinks and place are all excellent staff are a great asset and will def be back

Fantastic food. I always choose the Viceroy when having a takeaway. The onion bhajis are the best I’ve ever had. The quality of the lamb in the currys is really exceptional. Delicious.

Absolutely far and away the worst food I’ve ever had the misfortune to eat. Waited 90 mins for our main course after asking multiple times, when it arrived my mushrooms were Raw and there was hardly any meat on my plate, I didn’t eat it, maybe 2-3 fork fulls. Upon complaining the reply was it’s normal for a Saturday night, “Raw mushrooms” To top the lot they only apologised for the time waited and not uncooked food. I said on my exit that we will not be back, he said that’s fine. Avoid at all costs

Was in this evening with work colleagues, we had a selection of dishes served to us. I hadn't tried a lot of Indian food and was pleasantly surprised by the food served, i tried a lot of things i normally wouldn't. The staff were brilliant, can't fault the service, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The chicken apela is lovely a dish I would recommend this restaurant.

2 starters, 2 mains with breads and all brilliant. Our 2nd visit this year and once again brilliant. Add a bottle of rose and a tip gave a £70 bill. We had a wait for the table to be cleared otherwise 5* would be service. A very loud customer affected the atmosphere rating. We will be back next time we are in Carlisle.

Update review. I go once a year to see if its any better. Group of 5 this time. Ordered a thawa which is essentially just a balti served on a hot iron plate. It was bright red and caked in food colouring. Not very flavoursome. In fact most of the dishes on our table were caked in food colouring. Portion size is small too, and it's not the cheapest of places.

Decided to head to the viceroy based upon friends recommendation. The food was largely tasteless, a good measure for me is a Dall, tasted of not much not a rich flavour at all. Tandoori chicken great but the remainder awful and insipid

Wonderful place. Our first visit. Already can't wait to go back and try more! Staff were so lovely, helped with our menu choices, so friendly. I had a green apple curry which tasted amazing - bold colour, gentle flavours, gorgeous. Beautiful, clean place. Very deceiving from the outside!

Came here for my daughters 16th birthday meal with family on 6th april, the staff were amazing! They made us all feel very welcome. And nothing was too much trouble. All the food was lovely 😋😋 we had a large mixture of food, all came out hot and very tasty, They allowed us to bring our own cake, brought out plates and everyone sang happy birthday, they brought out a birthday card for my daughter too, which was very nice. We have been here once or twice before and the food has always been great. Thankyou for a lovely evening and thankyou to the staff. We will definitely be returning and i think the family will be too as they all enjoyed the food x

Went with our family last night for a birthday there was around 16 of us, staff are excellent and really do make the place. Food was all good and tasty, not rushed, in all a really good place.

I’m not sure if tandoori is for me every dish that came out of the kitchen was red. My main tasted sweet and no spice / flavour to it. Chicken pakora starter was in heavy batter and soggy. Prawn puri was tasteless. Sadly not great but the service and staff team were lovely the food just wasn’t tasty enough and all very red no matter what you ordered. Perhaps I’m not experienced in tandoori curries but definitely not my thing.

Very disappointed been coming to this restaurant for a very long time, all of our family use the viceroy regularly, got a takeaway tonight ( travelled 12 miles for it 24 mile round trip ) to get home and have the wrong meal vegetable pilau missing given boiled rice instead ( bland ) missing chips too. Did spoil the meal, we ordered them for a reason. Chicken tikka korma was bland and watery and made even worse by having plain boiled rice, wasn't worth the 50 minute journey to Carlisle and home. Sag aloo wasn't very tasty either but glad I had it to add some flavour otherwise a microwave ready meal would of been exactly the same. Rang up to say we had received the wrong order to which we got a phone call back to say we hadn't been charged so basically what was the issue, well the issue was we didn't get the food we ordered and we definitely did order it and it spoiled our meal whoever rang us back couldn't of cared less no apologises so unfortunately now need to find a new Indian to go to as we won't be returning here, meals out even a takeaway is a luxury at the moment and to get basic food and not even the right order and not even a sorry is very disappointing I'm sure there will be better up and coming Indians in Carlisle as I feel the viceroy has lost its way which is a real shame.

After living abroad I found this restaurant second grade. It's food was totally lacking in great Indian or Bangladeshi authenticity. Food provided for the inexperienced Asian palette. Needs to build its cuisine on authenticity and not on pleasing the bland European taste.

My wife and I drove from Milton Keynes to visit my parent and was after an Indian takeaway and the viceroy was recommended. Very happy with the service and very satisfied with the quality of the food, when we come back to Carlisle we will boon a sit in meal not a takeaway, service guys were a great laugh. Keep up the good work 👏

Found this lovely restaurant on our little weekend away and what exceptional place this is. Food is absolutely spot on don't know why some people have given a bad review as there is nothing wrong with the food or the staff at all. Very welcoming an courteous staff can't complain at all... if i was from around here this would be my go to place for sure🤌👌👍

After reading reviews my wife and I decided to go to the Viceroy for dinner. We recently returned to the UK after living for 23 years in New Zealand and Australia. Since our return we have found British cuisine to be rather bland, having little seasoning and more like a children's menu lacking in taste and any vegetables, so went to the Viceroy hoping to have a meal with some spice and taste. When we sat down the waiter asked do we want any popadoms and dips which are usually complimentary when eating in New Zealand establishments, so we said yes, only to find they were £5 when we read the menu. I ordered "SAMOSA" for my starter which when I had eaten them before was a pastry pyramid usually about 4 - 5 inches high made of thick flaky pastry filled with vegetable/meat. When it came I got 2 small triangles of flat filo pastry on a bed of lettuce. I ordered the "BANGLA BAD BOY" along with some onion pilau rice which was quite hot but not the hottest I've ever had. My wife usually has a Korma which was missing from the menu. We asked the waiter which dish was the nearest to a Korma so he suggested "CHICKEN APELA" along with some plain rice. We took the advice of the waiter and ordered. When it arrived it looked like a bowl of pumpkin soup. She tasted it and found it to have zero spice and had a mild, sweet coconut flavour. If we had read the menu properly instead of asking the waiter for advice we would not have ordered such a bland, tasteless meal. If British people can't eat hot/spicy food, don't go to Asian restaurants. We will not be returning.

Got a takeaway from here a few times now and sadly will not be going back. I've tried a few Indians in Carlisle and this has been really bad. I've given it a fair few chances. No more. Staff are so unhelpful too.

Been going here since i was 20 years old, the first experience of induan food. Asked for something not too spicey and they recomended a corma. It was nice but not quite what i expected. Went back the next time and they suggested trying a plain curry. Plain!!! Its anything but, its full of flavour and doesnt burn your insides. I've eaten spicier dishes from here too and they were equally tasty but check your heat levels guys. Oh i said i was 20 when i first went. I'm now 51 years old.

First had a meal here 2 years ago & the food was excellent. Had a meal with friends on Saturday evening, food was really poor. Chicken pakora was sliced round discs, not fresh chicken & deep fried in really fatty batter. My South Indian garlic lamb was absolutely crap & bland, the lamb was (if you could find any) small diced cubes. Nan bread was under cooked and poor quality bread. £10 for 6 popadoms & a few dips 🤷🏼‍♂️ Was exactly had happened to this place? Won’t be back!

Very disappointed with the whole set up. The decor was dingy and dark with poor lighting. As for the food, that was generally mediocre and the staff didn’t understand when we asked for some side plates for popadoms and dips. However, they did understand the word bill. Won’t be going back.

Came on a Tuesday night with 4 adults and 2 kids . Had a few drinks each & poppadoms. 4 main dishes, with 2 rice , 3 nanns and 2 chips . Food and service were great .. I'm not sure what the bill was as I never paid lol. I recommend the South Indian garlic and the tandoori mixed grill 😋 I used to come here all the time & hadn't been for ages. Great memories here 💘

This is a superb Indian restaurant, much better than you generally find in a small town. Great food, great service AND open late. What’s not to love?!

Great food as always. Service not great tonight but in defence it was an extremely busy Bank holiday wkend. I like spicy hot food and was talked into getting bangla bad boy by my ' evil daughter 🤣'. We've had loads of takeaways, always lovely, best ever poppadoms. Restaurant is very good, food always excellent and good quality.

Delicious meal. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff they were very friendly and informative. I don't like chunks of tomatoes in my dishes so I usually stick to same thing each time, however they advised me on what dishes I could have I couldn't decide so they brought me half and half! Absolutely delicious was nice to try something new. Food was piping hot and very tasty will definitely be back.

Had some superb meals in this restaurant...but not my last two. I had a Chicken Tikka Madras takeaway...and it was awful..very watery , lacking in flavour and the chicken was the smallest pieces ever. Had the same dish the following week, informed them about the amount of water in the previous weeks dish and they jist said that they would let the chef know to make it more thick..which it was...but the flavour was still bland. Not the Viceroy i know..very dissapointed.

The absolute ‘go to’ in Carlisle for this style of food. We regularly use the viceroy for take away and meals, we wouldn’t dream of going to a different location. So good.

As always another fantastic feast. Service was excellent and the waiters very chatty. And don't forget the boss..... Not the one upstairs.... Only joking... Thank you

Staying in a cottage in the local area on holiday and tried Viceroy for a takeaways. Food was over all good, a good selection on the menu and friendly staff when I collected it. The garlic nan was a bit dry and tough and not very soft but the curry’s we got were tasty and a good portion size.

Excellent just excellent I’m a vegetarian and the chef prepared me a curry especially for me and one for my friend also that weren’t on the menu. The curries were superb the staff were friendly, helpful and quick. Altogether a great experience ♥️

Got a takeaway meal menu delivered though the door a few weeks ago from a deferent takeaway shaddongate though I would place a order 1 thawa chicken then one pili pili chicken then one onion rice then one keema nann bread cost 33.60 pounds now with the cost of living I thought wait a minute I will price up the viceroy for the same and it came to 23.95 pounds so I place my order with the viceroy and got a fantastic meal hot 🔥 and good quality

Again the food, service and ambient fabulous. Can't fault anything. All the staff are attentive, polite and jovial. Even the boss popped upstairs tonight. Will be back soon.

Fantastic multi award winning restaurant and takeaway. Always a welcoming experience and one of if not the best places for a curry in town. Huge selection of tasty dishes and they will cater to all heat levels. The takaway is generally busy so best to phone ahead with orders rather than just turn up.

Comfortably the worst curry I've ever hah.... completely bland . The bhuna was literally flavourless and also really sloppy despite describing itself as a dryer curry. The tikka massala was just about edible with the only flavour being coconut. Chicken in both was at least a day old and dry as a bone. Naan cold and dry. Can only assume the 5* reviews have never eaten curry anywhere else.
