The Viceroy in York

Disappointing Experience at The Viceroy I visited The Viceroy recently with a friend and was left feeling quite disappointed by the experience. From the moment we sat down, the service felt indifferent. Not once were we asked if we were enjoying our meal or if everything was okay, which is something I'd expect at any restaurant, especially when it wasn’t particularly busy. I ordered the Murgi Masala and specifically requested it to be made mild, as stated when I ordered. Unfortunately, the waiter was less than accommodating, insisting it should be served medium hot "for the flavours." Despite my clear preference, the dish arrived as medium hot, and as a result, I could hardly eat it. Yet, when our plates were cleared, no one asked why I had left so much of the food untouched. On a positive note, we started with the pickle tray, which I enjoyed, and my friend found his Chicken Balti to be acceptable, but overall, the meal and service fell short of expectations. I had hoped for a more customer-focused experience, but sadly that wasn't the case.

Delicious food and fantastic service

Waited 3 hours for delivery and after ringing the restaurant was told my meal had been ready for collection but no drivers had come for it from just eat. Disgusting service

6 of us tired up with no booking. Seated in the waiting area for around 10 minutes, where out drinks orders were taken. We were then seated, ordered and food arrived promptly. Really good Lamb Tharwa, plus garlic Naan. Not mind blowingly amazing food, but good and fairly cheap. Not my first time here, and certainly won't be the last.

Ordered food from Just Eat, arrived very very quickly, very hot and to die for delicious. This is the first time ive ever tried this restaurant, my parents love it and have eaten here many times but i decided to take the chance tonight and im so glad i did. The driver was lovely aswell. Will definitely be ordering from here again very soon. We ordered Chicken tikka masala (mine), Chicken pathia (my dads), naan breads, rice and poppadoms, not the cheapest restaurant around but definitely worth the increase in price and will happily continue to pay the prices as i think it may be one of the best indian places ive eaten in York.

Lovely delivery driver and absolutely gorgeous food. Will be ordering again very soon, the best curry i think ive ever had, cant say enough good things.

Best Indian in the city! Have been going for years and never had a bad experience.

Instantly greeted with rudeness. My girlfriend and I ran 10 minutes late due to traffic and when I said the name of the booking, the staff member looked at his watch in disgust and murmured something in an unnecessarily rude tone. Food was lovely but unfortunately it was let down by the staff. We felt rushed when ordering and weren’t feeling very welcome, also felt we were under constant surveillance as there was simply too much staff wandering around at once. We then witnessed a staff member talking to another member of staff about us and being rude and homophobic. Again, even though food was tasty, would not visit again due to the overall unwelcoming feeling and sheer rudeness and unfriendly behaviour.

Always great food! Wasn't deliverdd as hot this time, but usyally it's still piping hot.

Best and oldest Indian in York

So, we had a takeaway (deliveroo) gorgeous meals but the stand out was Fish Karachi (no doubt spelt wrong) and actually thought I had ordered Masala Fish..... Nope, Fish Karachi arrived.... Bloody beautiful, slight spicy kick but gorgeous what a happy error in our ordering... Highly recommend this dish and ps food hot when it arrived x

Lamb Bhuna was spot on, service was quick and great VFM

This restaurant will not guarantee gluten free We walked away they did not sell food to 4 people we went elsewhere were they did guarantee gluten free

Excellent food and very friendly staff.

Lovely main, though I wish the onion bhaji was slightly less heavy with flour, perhaps cooked more or made lighter somehow.

Always a great place to eat, reasonably priced and always a spot on curry!! I would highly recommend this local favourite to anyone fancying a spicy tea in York.

Food was lovely until I bit down on a huge bone. It's actually hurt my tooth, I was not expecting bones in my food. Sorry, but had to mention, everything else was lovely.

Good set of lads Rocky & Naz both been there donkey years ! Only thing that has changed is the price increases ! Also Mahmood has stop using his hair & beard colouring . Yes still Boys serving the Reqs & taking the usual sarcasim wiv a smile

These curries were not the nicest we’ve ever had. I wish I ordered from The Raj like normal. My ‘mild’ curry was very spicy and I usually get this curry from any Indian restaurant I go to so I know this is mild and I like it. The sauce for both curries were very watery. The popadoms were bland and didn’t come with the usual accompanying sauces and onions. I wish I never ordered from here and stuck to The Raj!!

Can’t comment on the food but the staff are very friendly and are very honest about their kitchen not being safe for people with allergies (better safe than sorry). Was part of a large group so they let me bring food in from elsewhere so I didn’t miss out. Even offered to warm it up for me. Food looked great and service was brilliant, plenty of staff on hand checking up on us offering drinks etc.

Order arrival time dropped a little, so early against initial estimate, which just means curry, quicker.

First time visit, first two courses came at break-neck speed, thought we were in a speed-eating competition. Mains was more relaxed.

The atmosphere was very lively, classy and great scenery. Staff were quick and efficient service.

This is a fantastic Indian restaurant, the best in York by a clear margin. The food is very good and the menu is massive, so there is something for everyone. It is also very reasonably priced and service extremely prompt, including for larger parties. The staff are what makes this place; they are proactive and friendly, including having banter with the customers. You can see why they have so many regular customers. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is because the decor is a bit dated.

Food was well spiced and tasty.

The driver went to wrong location outside another building, claimed to have called me despite me receiving no calls, and was extremely rude at meeting up after I walked all the way to him, saying that he would have taken the food for himself if it was not Indian food

First time using viceroy after numerous people telling me they’re probably the best out of all the Indian restaurants in York. And they were right. Best jalfrezi I’ve had. It was also massive and had loads of chicken in it. Very flavourful and the best was perfect. Absolutely ordering from here again.

Good Indian food in great location

Came to visit my aunt , Absolutely amazing food , best I’ve had in a very long time , service impeccable and friendly , beautiful clean restaurant decor very nice . Will be back !!!

If you want a decent in Indian meal, go to Viceroy. If a group of 3 or more you should try the 'family' Naan!

It has been many years since I have been to eat here. Several people have recommended this Indian restaurant. It was absolutely superb. Great food and customer service. Highly recommended and will visit again soon.

Waited over an hour and 15 for the food and when it arrived it was all stone cold

Claimed to have been delivered at 1900, turned up after 2220.

Was not happy .we got a take away lots of bits where missing from are order.we phoned and the response was .can you come to the restaurant. Um we just ordered cuz we didn't wanna go out. Its there mistake so why couldn't take come and drop the missing food off. I'd give a big 0 for customer service

We ordered dal and a paneer dish. Dal was decent and paneer was bad. It was too sweet for our taste.

I ordered two chicken kormas as a birthday treat for a friend and myself. The food was excellent, fresh and hot. Complete with a garlic naan it was delicious, thank you. l would definitely order from you again and perhaps be a little more adventurous next time.

Service was fantastic, lamb thawa was the nicest curry i have had for a long time, would definitely recommend!

Was tracking the driver and he took the longest route through the city centre imaginable when it was peek travel time to get to the address. The driver could have come a quicker way. Had to put all of it through the microwave as it was stone cold. Extremely disappointed with the outcome as it is usually very warm when arriving in the past.

Good as good as the restaurant

Terrible. You pay a premium for utter rushed rubbish. Never again. - We will stick with “The Raj” in future. These guys used to care about the quality of food. It would appear that they no longer care unless you’re eating inside the restaurant. 0 stars!

Oir favourite tale away from York, we had the usual Nawabikahna, it was devine, such a flavoursome well balanced curry The staff are always lovely.

Ordered a take-away through Just Eat that never arrived. The Viceroy manager was really helpful in updating me on my order, each time I called, that was ready and waiting collection for over 2 hours (It never did get collected)! So put in the order direct, at the advice of the manager (which was £8 cheaper than my original Just Eat order) they had it ready for me in 30 minutes and were really kind when I collected and showed me the Just Eat glitch on their end too. The food was also really good - so worth the wait and picking up myself! *I did eventually get a full refund from JustEat, but won't be using their service again!

The ordering process was easy. The food was delivered near enough on time. All our food was delicious. We have been having food from The Viceroy for years. Both takeaway and eating at the restaurant and it is always excellent.

We order once a week from Viceroy...always hot & on time & great food...however, yesterday they delivered the wrong curry & was just too hot/ spicy for us to eat & ended up in the bin. They had sent a lamb curry instead of chicken...not sure what curry it was, but certainly not Rogan Josh! Just eat complaints is a nightmare...no refund as yet & also required photo's !!?. So had to take a picture of it in the bin! Ridiculous!! We tried to eat the chapatti & rice, but too contaminated by the hot curry. Waste of money & food!

The people are very friendly and professional

Great food, brilliant service. 2 nann breads was accidentally missed off, called the restaurant and they sent one of the in house staff round with them within 10 minutes so we could still enjoy the meal.we had ordered.

Ordered at 18.40 and didn’t get my order until 20.20 approx.

The meal was spoilt by late delivery time. After a tough week we thought we'd treat ourselves. The late delivery took the shine off.

What a lovely place to eat. Was recommended by a local who had eaten here in the 60s when it was first opened. Food was fantastic. The service was second to none. The place was very clean. Will definitely be back.

We were staying at a hotel around 5 minutes walk, so we booked to sit in having read good things. It was a Friday and was already busy but lots of staff on hand to to help. We ordered drinks almost immediately after sitting down and they came quickly. After ordering our starters, etc, they were brought swiftly too. The dips to accompany the poppadoms were a generous size for 2 people to share. However, compared to other restaurants we've been to, this one didn't rate as highly.

This place is more than a curry house. My all time favourite Indian restaurant in York. Service is always impeccable.

We ordered the lamb naga, tarka dhal, paneer karahi and a roti. Absolutely fantastic food and flavours. The lamb was really good, not chewy or fatty and spicy but flavourful. The paneer was a highlight with big chunks and not just an afterthought. Service was great and friendly with a smile. Well worth a visit.

Easy online booking, recommended as it is popular. Excellent service and the best curry I've had in a long while: the bhuna had plenty of meat in tasty thick sauce. Also recommend the sag paneer. Close to centre. Go and enjoy!

Absolutely shocking service. My food was over an hour late. I rang the restaurant up to let them know my order was over 1 hour late and they told me it wasn’t there responsibly as it’s now down to the driver. No communication was made my way to let me know my food was going to be this late. The restaurant has told me to refund my order as it’s now not down to them. Absolutely do not recommend one bit!
