A gorgeous venue is being wasted by incompetent staff. Hugely overpriced - nearly £16 for one beer and one wine. The bartender tried to mix two different pinot rose wines with totally different labels in my glass and only didn't do so when I challenged her. We were ignored on several occasions at the bar - I had to say excuse me twice to get attention when the manager (!) and another bartender were doing things like fixing one of the two tills. I challenged the prices and the wine issue with the manager and was offered nothing by way of apology. DON'T GO unless you want to be treated poorly and rudely and also get ripped off by extortionate prices in the process.

Arrived for 11 45 table booking. Served by lovely staff got our drinks quickly and meal with 30 mins. However we asked for the sharing beef platter for2 for under £40. Food was cold not only meats but cold kale and other veg too. The platter content was really good and enough for 2 sharing. We had 2 sweets. Mine was 5 / 10 and my husband had stickt toffee pud( his favourite ) . It was about 3 inches square and cold and sauce was cold. The worst he'd ever had. He paid the bill and when we got into theatre checked the bill! We were charged £78 for the platter.! We went back after the show and questioned the bill. The manager showed us a P.P. in tiny letters which we missed. ! If it was a sharing platter then maybe the price they put on was very questionable!. There were complaints all around us on the other tables about the food being cold so it wasn't just our food. Such a shame and definitely won't be going there again until we see some excellent reviews regarding hot food and sensible prices.

We read the reviews from earlier in the year with great concern. We had theatre tickets for the Mayflower 19 April and decided to book a table and hope things had improved. Well they have. The food was beautifully presented and cooked and served in good time. I asked about the poor reviews and they had problems earlier in the year but seem to have overcome all these. We will return.

Ate here yesterday evening from the Pre-Theatre menu. We were 15 minutes late for our 6pm table - the waitress very politely informed us that we would be best to only order 1 course as time was limited - not a problem! The service was good, we were checked on several times by staff. Even though we only had one course the food was excellent. I nearly didn't book here because of the poor reviews - but tend to like to make my own mind up! Glad I did. I will definitely go back for a pre-theatre meal again (but turn up on time)!

My friend and I booked to eat here at 5.30pm before a show at the theatre opposite. We were running late so notified the restaurant who asked us to preorder over the phone as they were very busy, which we did. We were only 15 minutes late and our drinks order was taken promptly and our starters arrived shortly after. This is where it all went downhill. The starters were beautifully presented but luke warm, we couldn't get anyone's attention to send the food back and as we were starving and had been running late we ate them. It was more or less impossible to get drinks ordered, no one came to check on us and after waiting an hour for our main course, which we had preordered, I asked a waitress to check on our food order, she said she would and then I watched her go and stand to one side and do nothing! at 7;00, I informed a waiter that if our food wasn't out in the next 5 minutes we would have to leave as we'd been in the restaurant since 5.30pm and our show started at 7.30pm. He then returned with our food which was lamb rump, however, it was basically raw. I asked the waitress if I could have it cooked some more and she wondered around the restaurant with my plate for 5 minutes and eventually returned saying that the chef said 'that's how we serve it here'. I pointed out that it was now not only still raw but the entire plate was cold, I asked again if it could be cooked some more and she returned 10 minutes later with the same plate! It was now 7.30, we still hadn't eaten and had no choice but to leave as we didn't want to miss our show. Our waiter knocked 10% off the bill and gave us 2 glasses of wine on the house, which we had to down as we were putting our coats on to leave, but if I hadn't been going to see a show I wouldn't of paid for any of it, I just didn't have time to argue. Everyone around us seemed to be in the same boat. Such a shame as the venue is stunning in a really great location, it just seemed terribly short staffed and the staff that were there didn't have a clue what they were doing. Wish we'd gone to the Mayflower up the road.

Very poor. I went in with my teenage daughter and her friend before I took them to see a show at the Mayflower across the road. We arrived at 6pm and had ordered our food by 6.10pm. We watched others arrive after us and get served before us. When I asked the server at 6.55pm why our food had not arrived she told me that they had forgotten to put it in the system and that it would arrive soon. At 7.05 the manager came and told us the delay was because everyone else was also there for the theatre and it was busy, which was clearly dishonest based on what the server told me. The food arrived at 7.10 and we had to stuff it down in 10 mins in order to get over for the start of the show. I paid quickly as the food arrived so as not to delay us. Afterwards I noticed that one of the items we ordered had not arrived and when I checked the receipt I saw we were charged for it. By then we were in too much of a rush to do anything about it. Disappointing that this happened, especially since we arrived before many others and watched them all eat and leave in good time, were offered no compensation for the experience and even ended up paying for more than we got.

The building that is now The Vestry has been part of the city's history for centuries. In 1845, the 12th century building was converted into St Peter's Church and in 1953 became a Grade II listed building. The first thing you see after opening the old church doors is a huge Renaissance Italian fresco, in this case depicting a group of what appear to be merry fifteenth century well-to-do young people enjoying themselves. We were led upstairs to the balcony where we had a seat at the front looking down at what was happening in the bar and lounge below. We were going to see a show at the Mayflower theatre directly opposite and had booked for the set theatre menu. We chose to have the 2 course option and shared a pâté starter and crème brûlée dessert; for mains, I chose the seabream and my friend had the chicken breast., both mains served with a selection of sides. The food was excellent, very well presented, the waitress was very friendly and efficient, the surroundings very different and the ambience wonderful.

The bar staff and waiting staff were all lovely and pleasant. Cocktails were refreshing and as well as having the staples there were a few unheard of ones that were delicious. Unfortunately we caught the chef on a grumpy day and although the food we had was nice and beautifully presented, when asked for a simple change on the cheeseboard (swapping Stilton for more cheddar) we were told this was not possible. This request also resulted in the rest of our desserts not being sent to the kitchen so we waited for over half an hour with the continuous promise of ‘yours is next’. After 40 minutes of waiting we were told that our desserts hadn’t been sent through and we could order them again if we wished, but by this point we had to leave for the theatre opposite. Would happily return for drinks, not sure about food though, would need to check the mood of the chef first!

Linguine overcooked, tomato sauce it was in just like you get with tinned spaghetti. When asked by the server about the food l said l thought the linguine in tomato sauce tasted like it had just come out of a tin and l couldn’t eat it. This left a meal consisting of a small chicken leg with the skin on and a handful of rocket leaves. No manager, chef or anyone else came to explain or apologise. What’s the point in asking diners how their meal is if you’re not going to take any notice or try to put matters right? Most disappointing indeed especially as linguine is very quick to cook and a decent tomato sauce made in the kitchen is very easy to do in advance. The venue is wonderful so don’t let yourselves down with such little attention to preparing and serving good-tasting food.

We’ve never been there before. We were there with a large group of people to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The first course came out. I had ordered a crab starter. The portion was round and flat. It was as thin as two pound coins stacked together, It was just like tin crab all mushy. The ciabatta bread was dry and stale. My wife had soup it came out in a small bowl only half fall and looked like baby food it was like thick custard. My main was a fillet of sea bass on a bed of hard baked beans, no other vegetables at all. My wife ordered Shepard’s pie. When it came out it was a hard crust meat ball on a spoon fall of mashed potato. With four or five cubes of veg and a garnish of rocket and nothing else. The portion size was awful. Other people on our table complained about the meals and they left a lot on their plates. From the descriptions on the menus the food does not relate to what was served. The staff and service was friendly and good, but the food was awful. From reading previous reviews how quiet the restaurant is, could this be the food was disappointing. We will not be going back and definitely not be recommending the restaurant to friends or family.

With it's ground floor bar area and galleried upper floor the Vestry offers a different dining experience. We booked post pre-theatre time and were a little surprised how quiet it was for a Sat night. The staff are friendly and courteous and we were quickly shown to our table in the upstairs area. We ordered our drinks and enjoyed a tasty dinner from the varied, if concise menu. The food was well cooked and presented, although having some additional side dishes would have added to the choices. The building is impressive, overall the food was very good. Having pre-booked for a Christmas dinner, our food was brought to us very quickly. Both starter and the main were wonderful, and the portions were just right. Nothing felt too heavy. Dessert was a bit of a hit and miss amongst the 9people on our table, still decent but not as good as main and starter. The staff was pretty nice and attentive. Only negative probably was not being able to order drinks from the bar to the table, considering it was no busy at all when we were there and that there were 3 people looking after our table I wish that would have been an option.

Lovely venue. From the moment myself, daughter and granddaughters walked it it was a frosty atmosphere. I asked the woman behind the bar nicely, if we just went up to the restaurant, her reply with a frosty face was, someone will take you up there. My daughter looked at me, and asked if I wanted to leave as we both thought her rude. I said no, let's just give it a chance. A young girl came and took orders for drinks, whereas pleasant enough, but no smile. A different girl took our orders for food, again no smile. I ordered mushroom risotto, it came without mushrooms I could understand if they were busy, but us and another 2 tables were occupied. My daughter ordered the burger, the same for my granddaughters. Very disappointing, salad consisted of red lettuce, which is an acquired taste at the best of times, and hardly suitable for young children. Burger was tasteless also. It was just a burger in a bun, I can hardly see why it was £13.50 for the adult, and £7.00 for children as the portion sizes were the same. Suffice to say, very disappointing, and will not be recommending the place. Maybe the staff could go on a customer services course????

We decided to try this restaurant mainly because of its proximity to the Mayflower Theatre. What a great choice - it certainly didn’t disappoint. What was once a church has been transformed into an elegant bar and restaurant. The set menu was reasonably priced at £20 for 2 courses offering several good choices. We opted for the pork chop with delicious, creamy mash. We decided to share desserts: a delightful Creme Brûlée with raspberry sorbet and a very generous cheese board.

Good food, lovely surroundings. Value for money on food but drinks are very expensive in comparison. Set menu is rather limited.

Went for a pre-theatre meal having eaten here before as location is excellent for The Mayflower. Had downloaded a copy of the menu and we had both made our menu choices, unfortunately when we got there my hubby’s choice of starter and main were not available – one disappointed man as he didn’t really fancy anything else on the menu due the limited choice. Service was fine but got slower as more diners arrived. Would eat here again purely for the location.

We were there for a pre theatre meal .Good surroundings pretty with fairy lights ?The old church lovely space. The waitress was very pleasant .The menu we felt lacked flair with not a lot of choice which isn’t always a bad thing as you feel it is restricted to keep cooking fresh but we weren’t very enamoured by the menu difficult to find something we really fancied. However what we received was fine but average .I had the pasta but the pesto was not of a good quality the waitress was happy to bring extra but it did not have much flavour maybe they had mixed some oil in to make it go further so detracting from the flavour,I don’t know

From the friendly Matt who took our booking on the phone, to the waitress Amy and the Sous Chef Tim who came to tell us about the menu we were impressed. We had booked early to have a leisurely meal before the theatre and were told the restaurant was booked out for 70 from 7pm. So we felt quite special because they honoured our booking. The Seabream my friends had was delicious, hot and plentiful and my Thai beef salad was great too. We had poached pear, parfait and chocolate brownie for dessert and we were all delighted. I would recommend this place.

I visited the Vestry in December with friends from work for our Christmas meal. We had a few drinks before we sat down and the setting was all very festive to suit the occasion. It was a bit weird that we were the only people in the enormous building but it didn’t matter as the company was good.

Booked for dinner before the panto. After the on line booking system told us it was full booked, we rung and got a table, however we and one other table of 6 were the only ones there. Had to eat Christmas menu (on the 27th) food was ok but not great and with a £90 price tag for three two main courses not good VFM

Thank you Vestry team for an amazing Christmas lunch for 52 guests! The arrangements were trouble free, the service was fantastic, and the food was amazing. Everything ran like clockwork - we couldn't have been more pleased.

Came here for the Christmas lunch set menu. The chicken and ham terrine starter was ok, but the ‘Sirloin of beef’ consisted of two thin slices of meat, swimming in so much watery parsnip purée that it was rendered completely tasteless. The gravy was also thin and didn’t have much flavour It’s not often I’d opt for the carrots being the highlight of the meal but there you go. It’s a lovely venue and the staff were great, but the food, on this occasion, left a lot to be desired.

Please don't bother booking your Christmas do here. For the price the the food is awful. The winter vegetable pie was basically the normal veg being served that night with some mashed potato slapped in top and the rest wasn't great. For £37 I would expect more you would get better food at a low standard cheap pub. Very disappointing!

My friend and I had a post matinee early dinner from the set menu. The venue has such a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff, shame about the food they are churning out which is, simply put, awful. Will not be patronising this venue again until they start to put some thought, care and love into the menu.

The service was appalling. This place has a very limited fixed price menu as it exists to provide quick and simple pre-theatre meals for people attending performances at the Mayflower Theatre just over the road. Bookings are required so the chef knows in advance roughly how many people to cater for and of course he/she should know which dishes are popular. Despite all this our experience was like Fawlty Towers or perhaps one of those hidden camera TV shows.

Three of us went for lunch today one friend ordered the Breast of Chicken when it came looked rather small not much meat and contained a large bone it was a leg of Chicken not breast when mentioned to the waitress (the American one) her response was she was a vegetarian and wouldn’t know what cut of meat it was. Also she cleared plates when one of us was still eating and was generally a bit over-bearing. For what you pay meals small. Don’t think would go there again

Popped in for a cocktail before a show at the Mayflower. Unwittingly we order two 3 mins before happy hour started - had we waited until 3 mins it would of made a difference of paying two for £5 instead of the £16 I was charged.

! ! ni siquiera un perdon ! horrorizado con esto! ! No volveré! ! !

I have booked the third floor for a private event (wedding party) for May '24, we paid our deposit and suddenly the restaurant closed without being contacted directly to let us know this will happen and to give us our money back, neither to be aware that we will have to find another place for our wedding party! We keep sending emails to head quarters and no answer. YOU STOLE FROM US. WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK!!!!!!

I’ve lived in Southampton for many years and I’ve just heard of the sad news about this place that is due to close down via the Echo. It’s been a pillar of the community for years and offered food to the needy, a place to relax and enjoy all things art related. I hope there may be an opportunity for an alternative venue elsewhere in the future. Good luck.

Not great. The lamb curry was not amazing. The mango colada was so sweet. Such a lot of sugar.
