The Vale Restaurant and Coffee House in Wigan

Went for Mothers day, not many people in and service was very poor, waiting an hour for our starters which was nice but a long wait, the waited again for main meal which was nice but cold, the another wait for sweet. Staff pleasant but such a LONG wait for our food, when not many people in the people who were in all complaining about the food. Not a place for me I won't be going back.

Mothers day disaster. I had previously written a review 6 months ago giving 5 stars! Now replacing with a 1 star. We had pre booked, paid a deposit and pre ordered! It took 55 minutes for our starters (one of which we sent back) Had to chase up kids meals. Then another 50 min wait for Mains 🙈 parts of which were cold. Then another wait on desserts, and they forgot my mums pre order. I don't see the point in taking pre orders, it wasn't even busy. I feel sorry for the one bloke in a suit running around, he was the only one who seemed to know what he was doing, the rest of the staff just lazing about, on count down till they could clock off.

Just had a lovely breakfast. Food great...service great and a lovely place to eat.

Went for a birthday meal with the family, group of 9, and love it. Something their for all ages to eat. We booked ahead of time and filled in a meal form and all went well. We received excellent service from Gary and will likely be going again sometime.

Fui un cliente regular aquí, he estado yendo y viniendo durante casi 2 años. Fuimos a desayunar a finales de febrero; fue una pesadilla absoluta. Un miembro del personal estaba tratando de tomar órdenes y ejecutar la comida; esperó 35 minutos para sentarse para nuestra comida. El café estaba rancio; era como agua de mear. Los pisos eran muy pegajosos, horribles migas por todas partes, y no me hagas empezar sobre la comida. El tocino se quemó a cenizas; habría roto la mesa si se me hubiera caído lo suficientemente fuerte. Los frijoles estaban huyendo del plato; no pude encontrar ninguna salchicha que no fuera comestible. Hablé con el personal; no se molestó, me ignoró, trató de darme el 10 por ciento. Si vuelvo, es seguro decir que me mantendré alejado de esta pesadilla; tiene que mejorar!

Visited here last night, 15/3/25 restaurant was empty! My partner chose the sirloin steak, requested it to be cooked medium rare, it was well done ! Consequently had to send it back! By which time I had finished my meal, rump steak, however my meal was ok, sirloin steak was very grissley, disappointed considering steak was £20.00! Hopefully next time food will be better!!

My sister booked this place for her and my mums birthday. She made the booking and phoned to double check closer to the date only to find it was not booked correctly and they had no record of the deposit. It's not a simple review, food was in fairness nice and for the price the afternoon tea was good value however they don't seem to be experienced with the service side of things and need a experienced front of house staff member. They have a please wait here sign but if your going to do this you need someone front of house, 3 different groups came in and walked out when they were left to long waiting. The young woman who seemed to be the person mainly at the front was not the most attentive, made rude comments and may of been on the spectrum, it was definitely too much for her as it was obvious she couldn't manage, she couldn't answer basic questions. They just seemed unorganised and inexperienced. All the food being served did look nice and the chips my neice got were lovely..

After having a look about for a place that serves a great afternoon tea, I stumbled upon the vale. After looking through the menu and seeing the afternoon tea selection, I booked this in for me and my mum. We have never been before and honestly what an amazing experience. Walked in and was greeted straight away by a lovely friendly staff member who sat us at our reserved table. Within minutes, this grand afternoon tea selection was brought to the table, beautifully presented. The staff and the manager have been nothing but attentive, friendly and kind. We honestly couldn’t ask for a better experience! After finishing the afternoon tea, we asked for all breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. We will definitely, definitely be back!! Thank you so much for our lovely experience at your growing establishment. Cannot say enough good things about this place, the food, the prices, the staff, the surroundings! You should definitely visit. There may be some slightly negative reviews about this place, but we are completely shocked as to why! This place is a 10/10. We had an incredible time and we will definitely be back. Thank you! ☺️☺️

Sat 22nd Feb - Afternoon tea experience, absolutely shocking to be honest. Totally embarrassed to have taken my Nan here for what I expected to be a little luxury going off previous reviews. Booked afternoon tea for my Nans birthday for 3 of us. Firstly arrived and there was some confusion over our booking, a table had been set for us but only for 2 people, they sorted it pretty quickly but once seated nobody came over to greet us as such or ask for our preferences for tea/coffee/prosecco instead just put a pot of tea down on our table and walked off! Then came back over to ask if we wanted the soup that was included in the price on the afternoon tea menu - we said yes and off she went, we then had the ask when she brought the soup what flavour it was, was told vegetable but it wasn’t, more like spicy parsnip I think. Anyway it was cold so we sent it back and when they returned it was warmer but still not hot. Alarm bells ringing at this point but there was a few tables in and only 2 waitresses that’s I’d noticed. Then came the afternoon tea stand and what a disappointment that was! Bread stale! Cakes soggy and sweating which totally put me off; I’d say everything had been made well before and fridged! Nothing was fresh. Also not as described on the menu. Menu stated bloomer bread, tortilla wrap and ciabatta but was just standard bread. No tuna mayo option as stated, no pork pie and I’m convinced some if not all cakes were shop bought and not homemade as previous reviews lead me to believe. Another table sat infront of us had same issue and we was all left feeling very arkward and embarrassed by the whole experience! We asked for our tea pot to be re filled and the waitress just topped it up with hot water so as you can imagine the tea was awful, over brewed and weak! At this point we were ready for leaving and was told by waitress that the manager would come over and talk to us but she didn’t and in the end was asked to go to the till and wait for manager. Manager came and apologised through what felt like gritted teeth, couldn’t of been any less bothered and no genuine apology. She knocked a poor 15% off the bill and sent us on our way with a £20 voucher! Needless to say we won’t be redeeming said voucher.

Fue a tomar el té de la tarde para celebrar un cumpleaños. Pero estaba amargamente decepcionado. El té de la tarde está destinado a ser un poco lujoso en mi opinión, pero fue una experiencia completamente diferente a cualquier otra que he tenido. En primer lugar comenzó con la sopa, que es extraño, pero me alegré de ir junto con ella. La camarera nos preguntó si nos molestábamos con eso. Nos dijeron que era vegetal por los ocupantes de la mesa cercana. No lo era. Llegó tibio así que nos quejamos y nos devolvieron unos minutos más tarde más cálido pero todavía no caliente. Creo que fue chirivía picante. Luego tiramos una olla de té sobre la mesa sin que nos preguntaran qué bebida queríamos. El té de la tarde llegó sobre pan rancio sin las tartas de cerdo enumeradas y sin guarnición de ensalada. ¡Nada de lo que teníamos era fresco! Casi no lo comimos. Cuando pedimos más té, la olla estaba literalmente llena de agua caliente. Horrible de principio a fin. ¡En serio no te molestes!

La peor experiencia de café, sucio, migas en las sillas, piso pegajoso, bañeras de agua de limpieza, trapeadores y paños en una mesa en el área del café. Personal poco atractivo, sin sonrisas, sin contacto visual, esperó más de 40 minutos para 2 sopas y un arado. La sopa era insípida y servida con pan blanco en rodajas barato, la del arado estaba bien, el pastel de cerdo caliente es extraño y de nuevo servido con pan blanco en rodajas barato. Otros servían comida antes que nosotros que ordenaban después de nosotros. Café amargo, cubiertos sucios, no estaba todo bien cuando pagamos, ni siquiera contacto visual! Olla de aparcamiento agujereada por todas partes y basura en una esquina. ¡El lugar más desagradable para ir a almorzar!

Absolutely amazing experience! It was a delightful surprise. The cozy, inviting atmosphere made it the perfect spot for a relaxing meal. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, making great recommendations for both food and drinks! The dishes arrived really quickly, and each one was simply delicious. I could not recommend it enough!

Great food, great service and a shame there weren't more diners. Priced very reasonably, you shouldn't be missing out. On the night we turned up, a table booking for 11 had failed to turn up, with no communication whatsoever. Disgraceful and disrespectful. No wonder these places end up closing down if customers treat them this way. We had a most enjoyable evening in a lovely setting.

Food came out quick however there wasn’t as much as there normally is, the tenders keep decreasing in size while the prices are increasing. Not the place I remember.

No ha sido desde que todo fue reformado. Se ve muy bien, me encanta la sensación moderna brillante y la iluminación. La comida estaba bien, tiempo de espera mínimo y todo bien presentado. El menú es simple y sencillo y complaciente para la mayoría de las preferencias de alimentos. Los precios son bastante razonables y el personal amable y servicial. Es un gran lugar a pesar del menú limitado, para una comida caliente local y vale la pena una visita si estás en la zona

Nice breakfast, didn't realise they still had a pub attached. We will be calling in on one of our walks.

Don't sleep on this place. It was super quiet which is baffling as this is one of the best eateries in Wigan. Food was quick, fresh and very tasty. No frozen muck. Service was very friendly and prompt. We'll be back very soon! Thank you!

What a lovely place we couldn't have felt more welcome! And the food and service were exemplary, thank you gary,I would highly recommend going here! We had afternoon tea here and it was lovely the soup and extra touches make this the best we've had as a group and was amazing value. The other food going past all looked/ smelled amazing. We will be back here what a find!

I had a lovely meal with family tonight, the host was very welcoming and the food was delicious! I would definitely recommend to go and try out the new menu! I hadn’t been to this place for a long time but will certainly be returning soon!

This restaurant is clearly managed by monkey's but staffed by genuinely committed individuals as far as I can see. If you feel the same why not post too. I am the father of an ex employee and in recent weeks have actually supplied wet stocks because the monkeys can't count. I've eaten the food and I can honestly say that they have no clue how to make this business a success. Such a shame because it's a really nice venue, apart from the neglected car park and occasional build up of outside waste. I would suggest it is avoided if you have a Wetherspoons close by. The food will be "much" cheaper and of a "higher" quality.

Went for my mum & dad's 60th, and they were so accommodating. Gary the host couldn't do enough for us and made sure it was special for my mum and dad. Would rate him ten stars if we could.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch. The 2 cocktails for £12 was fabulous. Top quality cocktails for a great price. We'll definitely be returning.

We came for a double family birthday,and we all enjoyed it.The food was great and the staff went above and beyond due to my mum having poor mobility,they really looked after her.Would definitely come back and would definitely recommend it.

Stumbled across the vale when looking for somewhere to have breakfast locally. The interior was really lovely and calming and the place was nice and quiet. Although there were other customers there, the tables were nicely spread out for privacy. The service was great. The staff were attentive and friendly. The food was lovely and will definitely returning. Bonus points for being dog friendly and also giving my little dog a free sausage!

Went to the vale for a family meal in the evening at the restaurant. Food was lovely, the restaurant was spotless, they had a lovely seating area outside also. But I cannot praise the gentleman serving enough. He was working solo so taking orders, doing bar/ drinks, taking food out & clearing tables with no help, & he was so professional & friendly, he made a real fuss of my 6 year old honestly cannot praise him enough definitely 5* for him alone.

I read some good reviews of this place, so was keen to try it out. Went in a family group of 4 Sunday April 14th. Service way too slow - most places take drinks order as soon as you’re seated, but not here, we waited several minutes. I ordered the full english breakfast and asked could i have a piece of black pudding, since i didn’t want beans or grilled tomato - this was declined and i was told i’d have to pay the usual £1.25 extra for black pudding. That’s just plain wrong! I asked do we have to have our eggs poached, can we not have fried or scrambled (both of which are listed as other items on menu) - but i was told “no, with us being busy you’ll just have to have it as it comes” (this place needs minimum 3 staff waiting on the tables at weekend, but they only had 2). They offer you no choice with the toast of brown or white, they just brought white toast out for all of us. I only realised later when i got home that they hadn’t given me any mushroom either. This really rubbed salt in the wound ie so i had no mushroom, no beans, no tomato, and they refused me one lousy piece of black pudding unless i paid an extra £1.25 on top of the £10.25. Overall a poor experience, and I would not return to The Vale and most certainly would not recommend it.

Amazing breakfast, delicious, well cooked and hot. The team were very welcoming and offered great friendly service. Nice and relaxed atmosphere. As a bonus they also spoilt our dog too. We will definitely be back.

Came this morning for a breakfast and loved it! Massive portions, really reasonable prices, and could walk in easily without booking. Veggie options were clearly labelled and service was really fast. Couldn’t fault it really! Will definitely be back - so nice to see this space being used well again ❤️

If this was an MOT it would be a pass with a couple of advisories. Breakfasts were really nice as were the staff. Toilets were clean but a bit smelly. Felt they could do with a bit of bleach or air freshener. Glasses had that slight smell they get when washed in hot water but not rinsed with cold. Car park has some deep holes in it. We left a tip so it wasn't a disaster by any means . Just saying If they fixed these small details then it could be really great is the point I'm trying to make.

Went for lunch with an old school friend, relaxed atmosphere , superb service, we couldn't have asked for more. I had the club sandwich and my friend had the beef melt with delicious dipping sauce. The chunky skin-on fries were perfection and piping hot. All food was perfectly cooked and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will be going again.

Booked in advance for Mothers Day. Was required to pre order food. Once seated we were told one of the pre order starters was not available. After 35 mins the starter arrived. Following this we chased the main course on two occasions. After almost an hour since the starter we decided to leave as still no main course. 1 hour and 40 mins and no main course. Overheard others being told items they pre ordered where not available. Table service was shocking and no offer of drinks following the first order. No one taking the lead. Poor customer service. Men's toilet really horrible smell. Outside bins overflowing. Very disappointed. Nothing like when this place opened. What's changed I wonder? Left with no meal and ended up taking the mother to Mcdonalds as we were all rather hungry.

On arrival we were greeted by a young lad who was quite abrupt. He ask our name about 5 time. When booking I made it more than clear that I am in a wheelchair. You would off though I'd just landed in a spaceship. A place was quickly dragged up in the worst spot possible. We was told just go there for now . We waited for an age for someone to take our drinks order and even longer for the food order. I must say the lad and girl looking after our table was very good and polite. Once the table near us came full it wasn't good and was people squeezing through. The same lad that greeted us whacked my wheelchair with a chair whilst carry a chair past. Not good. Then with the constant moving with worrying off being knocked and the the bang off the wheelchair I was in an awful lot off pain. The disabled toilet was disgusting and clearly not checked. Although when I mentioned this to the main front off house he soon had his rubber gloves on. It is a real shame as the food was nice but for some reason there was no music playing so no real atmosphere. Maybe if your not in a wheelchair it might be more enjoyable.

Another great breakfast at the Vale. Always accommodating when we visit. A very clean establishment and parking never a problem

Out walking with my daughters dog, Pixie, this morning. We stopped of at the Vale for a scrumptious bacon toast and a brew. We were looked after by a lovely lady called Maureen. She made sure Pixie had plenty water. The chief Dave even cooked her a sausage which she at in two minutes. Excellent service and friendly staff, will definitely be returning.

Went here for Sunday lunch with a friend. We were promptly seated and had our orders taken. Food came out quickly and was absolutely perfect, delicious and a generous portion too. Best roast we’d had for a long time! Service was very welcoming and professional. Lovely, calm atmosphere even though it was a busy Sunday. Will definitely be back again!

Just dropped in for a quick late lunch. Toasted sandwiches for me and my wife and a bowl of what were the best chips we've had in a very long time. Excellent service and very good food in a lovely environment.

Whenever we’re going anywhere or Sunday morning we always come here for breakfast everything is excellent from greeting to ordering the quality of food a lady called Maureen is so polite pleasant and at times funny. First class all round. Thank you

This has become a regular place for me to visit with my husband , we sometimes bring our young daughter along and Maureen always goes the extra mile to make sure she is happy 😊 we are always made to feel welcome by the staff who are always happy to accommodate any needs . We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the decor is beautiful which is always a bonus !

Once again another great visit . Got a lovely warm welcome on arrival , only came for breakfast and Would recommend the breakfast . Also Lots of other meals to choose from . Service was fantastic . All in all I will definitely keep coming back here .

We have been coming to The Vale regularly for the past year. Wonderful and very friendly staff. Lovely food and drink in lovely surroundings. Would very highly recommend.

Nice hot food and drink. Nice décor Nice staff. Attentive and friendly. Nice chilled atmosphere. Good value for money. Service fast and food and drink out fast. However, asked for scrambled egg instead of poached on my breakfast and chef would not do. Not sure why. I got fried egg instead but i would have preferred scrambled. But they wouldnt do it. Asked for brown toast. Got white. Not too much of an issue i ate the white . Asked for a small breakfast and to add on a grilled mushroom and this wasnt added but was charged for. Didnt really say anything as didnt wanna sound too fussy due to the egg debate. Ate all my breakfast as did my son but i definitely prefer scrambled egg and mushrooms on mine. Would come back

The prices have increased, when the amount of food per plate has decreased. It does not have nearly enough chips per dish and can vary massively depending on you go. The service is not the best.

Avoid if they have a rugby club in for food after a match. Sunday morning called in and cafe seemed normal though part sectioned off. Rugby team turned up halfway through our wait. Muddy kids, noisy adults, far too many for space allocated , doors...

We ordered 4 x steak frites. This should have been with pea shoots. No pea shoots, a few fries and 2 of the thinnest peices of what should have been 5oz Rump steak. 3 steaks flooding in garlic butter, 1 dry as anything. For £10.99...

Came in a few on Friday night for dinner, thought we’d give it a try and we were pleasantly surprised. Friendly service, lovely food, and an all round great experience. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fine dining experience with reasonable prices.

Its a shame the service is so poor here as the food quality is very good; slow service, disinterested team.

First time here , First impressions was gorgeous place ..but that soon turned into disappointment , as soon as you walked passed the mens Loos the smell hit you , was part of a large group and we had afternoon tea , was very underwhelmed, 3 plain sandwiches , frozen peti four cakes and inedible stale scones all for £18 each !! Don't think I'll be returning !!

Food was OK. Companions had the afternoon tea and it was very stale. My salad was nice. I would come again but honestly the place just stinks. The toilets are right near the entrance and the smell of them permeates to all areas. It smells like eating at festival. Real shame because the look of it is beautiful.
