The Unruly Pig in Suffolk Coastal

What a treat! Had heard good reviews but loved the actual visit. Was not over busy on a Monday lunch so staff were very attentive . We tried the three course lunch and it was delicious! Loved every course .

The pub itself is charming, with a cozy atmosphere, great selection of drinks, and beautiful decor. However, the service was disappointing. We were informed before we went that the service was poor. Despite the friendly demeanour of the staff, the wait was unusually long, and orders were often mixed up or forgotten. It's a shame, as the ambiance and food were great, but the slow and disorganized service left us frustrated. With a bit more attention to detail, this place could be fantastic.

We visited for Sunday lunch. Greeting was very friendly and service was both speedy and professional. The food was really very good - the arancini were the best I have ever had, anywhere in the world. There was a generous amount of meat in the roasts, which was beautifully cooked, and cauliflower cheese was very good. Definitely recommended - but make sure you book a table - they were fully booked on the day we visited.

First visit and the food was overwhelming service and the whole experience was amazing we will look forward to the next time 😋

Didn't book a table but called in on the off chance - advisable to book. Had passed it on the way to another destination. Seated outside on a glorious sunny day - under parasols. Waiting staff (Micheala) was effective and efficient. Food was well presented and delicious as was companion's choices.

We had the tasting Thursday menu for lunch and it was devine. We had the optional fried oyster with cavier it was lovely. The optional lobster with tomato brodo was amazing. We all loved the rabbit risotto. The pork was a bit chewy but the accompanying sauces were great. The deserts were lovely. You can tell we enjoyed it as you could see the trail of our fingers through the sauces. The food is amazing very high quality, great service and they cater for dogs as well with a water bowl and bone biscuits.

We felt very disappointed by our experience regarding catering to my wife's dietary requirements considering its a Top 50 Gastro. While the restaurant gave the impression that they could cater for my wife's dietary requirements, in reality they were not willing to offer any viable alternatives for the price we paid. My wife chose Iberico Pork with black pudding, carrots and parsley sauce. She was served two strips of pork with carrots and a lardo dressing instead of black pudding. They could easily have served potatoes instead of black pudding. We complained about the lack of substitutes but found the response very defensive. The price of the main meal was reduced from £31 to £25 but this was not explained at the time and I feel is also missing the point. When I complained in writing, they were unwilling to accept that they could have provided other alternatives and provided no further recompense.

We heard a lot about this place from friends who are relatively local. So eventually we made it for lunch. Absolutely the best fine dining and value for money we have had for a long time. Superb menu, the taste of the food is wonderful and well put together menus. Service was very good, professional and friendly without being OTT. Good selection of beers and wines. Definitely be back soon.

This venue had been arranged for us so I had no idea what to expect - but wow, I was not disappointed! We had the ‘meat’ tasting menu and it was excellent! I personally didn’t bother with the extra oysters to start, although wished I had because they looked amazing. We did have the lobster - absolutely delicious! So many courses and as someone who is not a big fish fan - I’m embarrassed to say the trout dish was my favourite, with rabbit risotto a close second! As I was writing this I looked at my photos and saw the pork course (in the photo) - so tasty! We also had the wine flight - which I highly recommend- amazing combinations really bringing the best out of the food (and vice-versa). The venue and the staff were fantastic- not too pretentious and the staff so friendly! We all had an amazing evening - thanks to the team. I guarantee you will enjoy this place.

We went with friends another of their Unruly collaboration evenings - this time with Adam Handling. The whole evening was outstanding. Service slick, friendly and professional. The food was incredible - every single of the 8 courses was excellent. We have eaten here from the beginning and have always had consistent outstanding experiences. In my experience the Unruly Pig is (still) the best restaurant around for excellent, Italian forward, seasonal value offering great value for outstanding food. Thanks for another special evening

Really disappointed with one small aspect of our visit: the manager. I would assume that The Unruly Pig put as much effort into front of house as it does it’s dishes…but apparently not… We regularly visit The Unruly Pig and really enjoy our meals. Staff are always attentive and polite, sometimes with some personality added in there too. For example, the person taking bookings and greeting at the door was lovely, quirky and, yet, highly professional. They were great with our daughter too (Pat on the back for the person with blue hair). However, the manager (not the owner) appeared blunt, flustered and short, throughout our entire visit. This is not something we’ve experienced with him before and was noticeable enough to lead me to write this entire review. One of the perks of being seated in the bar is that you can see and hear the entrance, the bar, the kitchen and so on. This can be nice as you can sit back and watch the world go by. However, it does mean that you hear “behind the scenes” convos from behind the bar etc. Unlike every other staff member, the manager appeared stressed/overwhelmed. You could visibly watch him momentarily turn on a smile when a guest walked in the door but he would then go on to looking stern faced and even visibly look put out when guests arrive with a dog that wasn’t mentioned on booking (heard that convo), bluntly reject a perfectly reasonable request to discuss party planning from another guest as they were “too busy” (surely that’s ££££££ that walked out of the door and, from the under-the-breath comment from the husband, likely isn’t coming back), comment & huff about the fact a larger table had changed seats after ordering and bat away a request by a staff member to have help logging preordered champagne by a telephone caller. Also, we brought a 9month old baby. Instead of bringing our own nibbles, which we thought The Unruly Pig might not look favourably upon, we were happy to pay and simply asked for a side of vegetables for her to chomp on. I said this as I was picking up the menu to see what the sides were. Before I could even really look at the menu/discuss options, the manager had shouted over from behind the bar (wasn’t the one serving us) that they only had cabbage. No other vegetables, specifically not even a carrot. Taken aback that a restaurant has no vegetables at all other than cabbage, we went with it as we’re were going to give her tastes from our plate anyway. Mid-meal, I remembered that the Unruly Pig actually has an entire kids menu. Whilst she is too young for a full meal of her own so not giving her a menu originally is perfectly fine, it was the perfect moment for an up-sell (I.E: “I’m really sorry but we only offer other veg on Sundays with our roasts. However, we do have a kids menu which may have something suitable on it?”) and we could have explored the “sticks and dips” or discussed what the kids side salad option is. I assume that the issue with everything the manager was unhappy with today was that it was off his very fixed vision of how the service would go. This is slightly understandable. However, the first rule of hospitality is to not let the facade drop. Therefore, no comments about inconveniences in earshot of ANY guest and if, like us, a table makes a request that cannot be fulfilled, simply explain calmly and politely what the obstacle is and redirect to a way that the matter can be resolved. [Nonetheless, it is, of course, a bit mad that in an age of healthy eating, you can’t even order a side of veg for a child though…] Quite a shame as it will definitely make us think twice about where we go for our next meal…

Been many times, but unfortunately their recent quality has dropped significantly. Bread side was super stale and almost inedible, kids mac and cheese was very runny, almost like a soup with a strong mustard kick and a spicy after taste. On questioning this the waiter confirmed it’s made with mustard and Tabasco - not mentioned on the menu and seems odd when designed for kids. Sunday lunch is ok - but not amazing. Decided not to stay for dessert. It’s just all a bit.. meh! Been a regular visitor for many years now, but I cannot see us returning anytime soon.

Went expecting great things, but it was all just too pretentious for us, and the food was just over the top. It is like they are just trying too hard. We may return, but it's very overhyped at the moment, and they need to relax a little.

Sadly, we were greeted by very unfriendly staff. The food is really expensive and not overly wow! This has happened before where we were meant to feel that we were lucky to dine there and not actually looked after. Overall won’t go there again as if you are parting with lots of money you want to be looked after.

Absolute shambles. Computer booking did not work so we went explaining that if we could not eat that would be fine. But we were told it would just be a 15 minute wait, which we were happy about, got some tea and waited. 20 minutes later we were told they needed the table back. Total waste of time and best part of £10 for two pots of tea!

Beware the terms and conditions. I booked for two people for lunch on a Tuesday. My guest rang me on Monday morning to say she was ill. I phoned the Unruly Pig straight away, before 9 am on Monday morning but that was less than 48 hours before the booking so that have taken £50 off my card. I won't try and book there again.

Beautiful tasting menu and way exceeded my expectations! It was nicer than some Michelin ⭐️ restaurants I’ve been to. Highly recommended!

Food was ok but expensive, but service was poor and arrogant…what topped it was being told another table had priority over us and we couldn’t order any nibbles until the kitchen cleared that table’s order…not the welcome we expected given we were told we only had a 2 hour time slot before they wanted the table back !!!

Had the Thursday Tasting Menu, it was fantastic. 8 courses, 1 was optional extra. The dishes were amazing and interesting and each was described by the waiting staff when served, which added to the experience. The 'Restaurant' gets very mixed reviews, maybe because people are expecting pub grub as it's listed as a Gastropub but it's not, this is fine dining in a beautifully decorated building with the look and feel of a pub. It's not cheap but well worth the money as you are eating food of high quality, prepared and presented by masters of their craft. I would highly recommend

A fabulous experience. Warm welcoming, great decor (super selection of artwork), comfortable and outstanding service. Knowledgeable young members of staff front of house were impressive, and they delivered outstanding hospitality. Great well chosen wine list with both affordable and deliciously extravagant options most available by the glass too so easy to indulge in pairing for each course. Most importantly the food was an absolute pleasure, the detail, depth of flavours and presentation were spot on. Overall it felt great value for money . A positive multi sensory experience of exceptional quality, relaxed and beautifully understated.

I thought the food didn’t taste very nice (I ordered the gnocchi for main) and it was very expensive.

Enjoyable evening, lovely food and good service. Service could be a little too much sometimes… no need for staff to keep saying “sorry to interrupt”, particularly when we weren’t in the middle of talking! One of the waiting staff spoke very quickly and quietly so difficult to hear what the dishes were. I’m not sure about some of the other reviews saying the portion sizes weren’t enough… we had the Thursday taster menu and I was full to the brim afterwards. Delicious food and lots I’ve never tried before. First visit for us, would definitely come back again.

If you are hungry don’t go here, if you are on a budget don’t go here. The menu is at best small there is not a lot to choose from and what is there isn’t awe inspiring. When the food came I was shocked at how LITTLE there was on my plate. I ordered a Pumpkin Gnoshi and got 6 50p sized blobs on the edge of the plate with a soup slime in the centre which was oily with what looked like sunflower seeds swimming in it. It was tasteless and made me feel nauseous. This set me back £21. I had a nibble to start Anchovy paste covered in oil again and not overly pleasant. The reason I didn’t complain which normally I would have was because I was there for a celebration and didn’t want to make a fuss. I can honestly say I have had a better meal at a lower budget end establishment. Very dissatisfied.

Second time we have dined here and I can confidently say that this was a great improvement on our first visit. The parfait starter was sublime... main was good and lovely cheese board to finish. Can't fault it, would definitely go back.

Biggest rip off in Suffolk. Also people mistake it for Michelin starred which it is not. Went with sister and family, spent an absolute fortune and they couldn’t even accommodate a coffee after the meal.

Wow! What an amazing place to eat. We had arancini & lardo di colonnata nibbles and then chicken & duck liver parfait and tortellono for starters. The chicken & duck liver was the best I hsve ever tasted. Mains were black pork & monfish. Managed to save enough space for afogato. Service was attentive and charming. This was a very special meal - each course full of wonderful flavours. My advice: take your time and savour each mouthful as clearly the wizards in the kitchen have used their skills and creativity to bring the magic to your plate. Thank you for a memorable and delicious meal.

We went for an evening dinner with some friends. We arrived before the other couple. We were shown to our table immediately ( rather than being offered a drink in the bar). We sat waiting for our friends to arrive and weren’t offered a drink. The staff lacked knowledge of the menu & my friends ended up ordering a starter of raw venison with raw egg. The member of staff had said that this was a venison tart. Therefore we were surprised at what arrived. I had steak for my main course & it was very good. My main frustration was that THEY DON’T TAKE CASH!!! I feel very strongly that businesses in this country should accept cash. For this reason, & because food was not as ‘wow’ as I had expected, I shall not rush to return.

Just excellent. Three of us complete with dog were given a very comfortable table in the bar, complete with water and biscuits all ready for the dog. The service from the young staff was faultless, as was the food. The best steak I think I have ever had. Not cheap, but excellence needs to be paid for.

We chose the Thursday night Tasting Menu offer. Excellent service. We don't drink alcohol and some places can make you feel like you’re something that lives under a stone - presumably because that's where money is made. But not this place. The staff were friendly and there was clearly a camaraderie amongst them all. They dealt well with a happy but fussy nearby table very well. The food was excellent. Small portions- but it's a tasting menu, so what do you expect. Some of the dishes were very special, the tomato course being my favourite - and l'm not that fond of tomatoes! The mini panne cotta with fruit was really good. None of it was too rich or too creamy and that allowed the flavours of the ingredients to shine. My one comment - and I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere is the chunkiness and size of the tea & coffee cups. They just jarred with the whole tasting menu vibe. Get yourselves something more delicate for the dinner service. We'll be back.

We don’t understand why this “gastro-pub” gets such rave reviews. The pricing is astronomical, the food is good but over-rich and very unbalanced. The service is very good. The ambience is pub; the prices are Mich*. In more detail: We went on the recommendation of friends, who described it as expensive but very good. They were half-right. The carte is very limited, usually a good sign but the dishes are all a bit too unusual mixtures and most didn’t appeal. We both ended up with the same scallop starter and sirloin main. £18 for one raw scallop, thinly sliced and over-powered by the sauce. £37 for a large piece of sirloin, some of which was a bit gristly, with what were described as “Parmesan chips”, actually layered potato slices, cut into chunks like huge chips, and swamped with grated raw Parmesan. And a bone marrow sauce and half an onion. No veg (unless you count the onion). Rich rich rich. We couldn’t face dessert. Coffees were good, but a double-espresso served in a large mug isn’t right. The little things were noticeable by their absence. No tablecloth. No nibbles with our drinks (unless ordered and paid for). No bread (ditto). (2 slices of focaccia = £4). Small glass of white wine £12.50. Large glass of a French Malbec VdeP £17. Bill for 2 people was £155 for 2 courses with 2 small beers, 1 large, 1 small wine, ex coffee (gratis ‘cos we were asked why we didn’t finish mains, too rich, apologetic, offered free desserts, so brownie points for the correct response there.) Ambience is noisy pub, not quiet dining. We were unfortunate in having a loud but hardly rowdy table of 4 30-somethings next to us - they weren’t objectionable, it’s just that the acoustics made it loud not relaxing. All in all, we write it off to experience. Have been aware of this place for a while, thought we’d try it, but it wasn’t for us. We won’t be back. Others seem to think it is great. If you’ve never been to France, you may agree.
