What can I say.... Attentive, presentable staff, great atmosphere and feel to this superb restaurant, Food that possessed an amazing taste, texture, appearance, and aroma, and satisfying in the mouth, the full neurological experience!

Would highly recommend the Unruly Pig, The food is amazing, and the service is first class. Also, I loved the ambience there. We all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

Disappointing Experience however amazing food, well presented and full of flavour. We spent over £150 for lunch, However I would not recommend taking children as you are made to feel very uncomfortable and an inconvenience due to having a pram, even when booking we stated that there would be two newborn babies in prams however on arrival was greeted with hesitation due to having children and made to feel a inconvenience by the front of house older male. The atmosphere in the restaurant felt quite tense and pretentious until, I have been to a number of amazing restaurants regularly, including the Ritz, the landmark and the Savoy hotel and the staff were more friendly and welcoming. A little bit of kindness goes a long way and a smile from the front of our staff which was missing.

So scrumptious! We went for the tasting menu at a lunchtime and the food was delightful. We had plenty of time between courses to have a drink and soak in the atmosphere. Very unpretentious - lots of families and friendly staff made it very cosy

Fantastic service and good. From the moment we walked through the door we were greeted by name. The table was set ready for us (children and a dog). The quality of the food was outstanding, particularly the ox cheek filled Yorkshire puddings. The roast beef sirloin was amazing. The kids menu was ok. Very much a meat focused place but they do have a vegan menu. As it was my birthday the restaurant staff had a card for me - just the right level of fuss. The quality of service and food is exceptional, really worthy of its gastropub status.

Amazing food, amazing service. You absolutely get what you pay for. This is levels well above a bit of pub grub. Would highly recommend.

Tasting menu. Glad didnt pay full price. Head chef must have had a day off. 2 out of 7 courses excellent, 3 ok and 2 actually bad. Waaaay too much salt and i love salt. Wouldn't go back or recommend. Service good tbf.

Booked table for 2 people. Told to call and ask if can cater to dietary requirements. Owner called back. Extremely rude!!!!! Said he would cancel reservations as Michelin restaurants do not cater for coeliac so why should they. He did not give me a chance to ask what they could do for gluten free and hung up phone. So disappointed and how I was treated. And I know for a fact that this is not the first time. My brother a few years ago had a similar issue with owner being rude. But I thought I would give another go myself to see. Please do not go, how can he treat people like this!!! I am extremely upset

Just amazing the food is so cleverly executed … the flavours are amazing the staff are so polite and know exactly what they are doing. Vegetarian menu is always fantastic

Went for the lunchtime tasting menu. The meat and fish version was delicious, the vegetarian option a bit disappointing and underwhelming. We will visit again but not with any vegetarians!

Superb. The tasting menu Thursday special is great value

We came last night for your Sunday special. Warmly welcomed and given a table near the fire which was lovely (we had our little dog with us) a bowl of water and plate of dog treats was provided which was a really nice touch. She was made to feel welcome too. The food was very nice, plenty for 2 people, good wine as well and a nice cocktail. Staff were welcoming and efficient. Thank you, we had a really nice time.

Great little country gastro pub. Service was great, very warm and friendly, attentive but also relaxed. We visited at lunchtime, so had the choice of all three menus; a la carte, set lunch and tasting. Food was lovely, really good, great selection of options. Really impressed with how the menu was structured to make the most of the ingredients. The octopus carpaccio was a highlight, but all the dishes we had were beautifully designed and executed. Beautifully decorated with some fun art on the walls and a cozy, welcoming and elegant vibe. Felt like great value for money too, as we have eaten at more expensive venues that did not reach the same level of quality, flavour and service. Ample parking, which is handy as it is a bit of a drive from anywhere!

Had the tasting menu for a 40th birthday celebration, every course was delicious and the whole team made us welcome and the evening special. Can't wait to return soon.

Very friendly staff! Great food

Great little find, had been recommended by a friend. Wa dubious on prices , but the food really does make up for it. ‘You get what you pay for’ that’s for sure. Great service too, food took a while to come out, but with great company and drinks flowing that’s the least of my worries. 5 stars would highly recommend.

Unbelievable - quite possibly the best food I've ever eaten (Social Sunday). £45 per head for literally all of the food, the staff were lovely. Do you fancy binning off Suffolk and moving to Norwich please?

We had another fantastic meal at the unruly pig last week. The food is second to none with simply amazing flavours in every dish. I never think of the pig as a ‘pub’, more of a treat for a special occasion. Delicious!

This much-lauded place came highly recommended, and was one of the highlights of our trip to the Suffolk coast. Elegant decor, a roaring fire and a very warm welcome from the team of friendly waiters created a wonderful ambience. We took the Sunday Social menu, which was quite extraordinary. An array of amuse bouche, followed by a delicious feast of beef, pork, nduja Mac and cheese, bernaise, salads, parmesan fries, ending with a delightful affogato. All for £45 each (we would have happily paid double). A well-curated wine list with most available by the glass. The selection of oysters were jaw-dropping good. Very dog friendly; our pooch was greeted with his own plate of treats - a lovely touch. This place deserves all of the praise and accolades it's received.

For an establishment named after a pig, the pork was rather disappointing. They only had one portion left for Sunday roast at 15.00 which would have been less of an issue if they had anything other than beef on offer. Anyway, our table managed to secure the last pork portion (props to the server for actually flagging this to us) but what a disappointment it was. It was anaemic, 40% fat, and it was the worst crackling I have had in a pub in a long time. The crackling was chewy, dry, and flavourless. What a shame. The other food was decent.

Great gastro pub, excellent service and atmosphere. The adult meals were absolutely excellent the only issue I had was that they put mustard into the kids macaroni cheese which put some of them off eating it.

While I could not fault the food, we were initially seated directly by the door and toilets which meant there was a constant flow of people. We did ask to be reseated and moved to a slightly better table away from the door, but had a cold draught from the window. That said the t-bone which came with a number of sides was the best meal I had eaten recently. There was more than enough meat for the two of us, especially with the Mac cheese and Caesar salad that comes with it. Don't miss out on the parmesan chips either-not your average chip!

We went as a family of four (children 7&5). From start to finish the service was exceptional, personable yet professional. The food was truly exquisite with everyone opting for the roast as a main! Try to leave room for pudding, they are a work of art. A 10/10 from us all and look forward to returning.

We were blown away by The Unruly Pig where it offered an exceptional dining experience with its refined yet approachable menu. The delicious oysters were from Mersea island, generous meat and fresh, while the bbq octopus starter was perfectly charred and tender with a fantastic nduja sauce. The Scallop dish was subtle and seasoned to perfection, enhancing their natural sweetness, and the Halibut was cooked perfectly, flavourful, and beautifully plated. The Cromer crab pasta was rich, creamy, and brimming with fresh seafood flavours. Impeccable service and a welcoming atmosphere form Jacki and his team made The Unruly Pig a memorable experience for us and a recommended must-visit destination for all foodies.

This place is just amazing. Second time here as I'm a little distance away in East Herts. It's almost worth the drive just for this pub. It's so unpretentious given the quality of the experience they offer. The staff, the food, the atmosphere. Can't fault anything. Lord knows why they don't have a Michelin star. Guess they don't need one. I really look forward to my next visit. 😍

Great New Year's Day love lunch!!

Table of 4 just before Christmas Our table had the chicken parfait which was lovely, the onion veloute which unfortunately lacked some depth and then we had the crab pasta - well cooked and delightful and the chateaubriand which unfortunately lacked flavour and wasn’t enjoyed by the table. Pudding was Christmas pudding and again - it would have been better served with a simple double cream or ice cream vs the heavy brand cream which came with it We had high hopes for the meal but unfortunately it did not deliver as expected. Sadly it did not match the prices being charged

Great dog friendly pub. Had a fantastic meal and service very good. Dog treats and water bowl at the table for our dog. Only negative is that it is a cashless venue.

While the food was very nice, we wouldn't have visited if we'd known how many dogs were allowed in a small dining area - it was akin to fine dining in the kennels. When we visited we were the only table without a dog, the table next to us had a large dog who was damp, active and smelly...what we'd hoped would be a memorable meal in a bijou atmosphere was spoilt by unpleasant odours. If fine dining in the kennels is what you're looking for then this is the place for you.

Having seen much of the awards and favourable reviews of the Unruly Pig, expectations were high but the general sense upon leaving was one of disappointment. We opted for the a la carte menu (vs the taster one). All in all an average experience: the chateaubriand was cooked well but lacked seasoning and overall flavour. The Veloute was pleasant but nothing outstanding. The Christmas pudding was good but the brandy sauce was quite overpowering (a Madagascan vanilla custard would have worked better). Service was fine but nothing outstanding. Value for money was certainly lacking: £300 for four people without alcohol is London prices and whilst the price in itself is no problem, the quality was off the mark vs high end pubs. I would be tempted to go again to try the taster menu but currently the feeling is one of its ok but nothing spectacular and certainly not worthy of the hype.

I visited twice last week and it was outstanding on both occasions. On Wednesday I took my wife and two close friends to celebrate her 60th birthday. We had the tasting menu which was cooked to perfection. The quality of the service made it an even more memorable evening. Bianca ( with her extensive wine knowledge) and George did an amazing job, making our evening very special. Keep up the good work!

Everything was really very good. Definitely amongst the best food I have had in Essex, and maybe actually the best. Our waiter was good fun and did a great job as did everyone else especially the chef!. Thank you.

We had a wonderful three course meal here, friendly staff, wonderfully presented and delicious food and a really nice atmosphere.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at The Unruly Pig, We took my grandmother there for her 89 birthday and they made her feel so welcome and looked after her and did an amazing job. The food was exceptional and can’t believe the value of the food and I am most looking forward to going there in the future.

Second time visit the Unruly Pig (last time was in 2021), and was even more blown away by the food this time. It’s was for my son’s 18th birthday and we did the tasting menu. Every course was superb, but the fried oysters with Nduja were the highlight for three of us. This place deserves a Michelin Star given the consistency in quality ingredients, cooked to a very high standard and with amazing flavours. The wine list is also very reasonable and with some great choices. We will be back again….hopefully not leaving it three years this time !

Spontaneous visit and wasn't sure what to expect. Some of the best food I've ever eaten and the nicest pinot noir. Friendly, polite and smart staff. Excellent for couples.

Attended for a birthday lunch on the recommendation of a colleague and was made to feel incredibly welcome by the whole service staff as soon as I walked in the door. Food was excellent throughout from the light bites at the start to the delightful pana cotta. The seafood risotto was the most notable dish for me however each bite of the whole meal was well thought out and thoroughly enjoyed. Would recommend to anyone looking for great service and excellent food, and to be honest if you kept it to just the 3 course set lunch £65 for two people for this calibre of food is insane value.

A very polished professional restaurant with fantastic knowledgeable staff whom were very attentive and looked after us extremely well. Although the prices may seem elevated the quality of the food was second to none and the flavours on the eight course taster menu was amazing. Will definitely be returning and will be recommending to family and friends.

Caught this amazing pub last thing on a Sunday, after squeezing in a late afternoon sea swim. Rang them with only 20 mins before last food orders and arrived with 10 mins to spare. They could not have been more accommodating - the food was excellent quality - did not feel like the last service of the day. The chocolate dessert blew me away. Do not drive past this one!

Had the good fortune to have a taster meal at The Unruly Pig on a Thursday when it is 2/3 it the usual price. The food was superb, the service brilliant & the ambience terrific. If you are ever in the area I would highly recommend.

Really amazing Sunday roast and first class service. The Unruly Pig is dog friendly too and there was even a little saucer of nibbles for our dog on the table for him. This was our first visit but it definitely won't be our last, it's a fabulous place.

Well reviewed by many people who know far more about good food than I but they are right! Delicious, inventive dishes served so elegantly. Attentive and very well-versed staff.

This is on our doorstep and although it is expensive we visit fairly regularly. We visited today for a roast lunch to celebrate my husband’s birthday. I brought a single cupcake I had decorated with a few candles in the hope it could be brought out for him. I asked about this out of his earshot. They told me they would bring it to the table but would charge per person 6.50 in place of us buying a desert. I have to admit I was shocked. Reason? We would be spending about 150 pounds on a roast dinner for 3 people!!!! Isn’t that enough of a spend to just bring out a cupcake? We weren’t setting out to deliberately rob you of the price of a desert! That wasn’t the point. As a regular customer I’m afraid I was suddenly very put off. I would have just mentioned my disappointment however as a birthday meal I didn’t want to make a fuss. So I took the cupcake home. On principal- because adding an additional 19.50 to the bill seemed outrageous to me for a cupcake that cost nothing. I asked my family if they thought it was wrong of me. They agreed it was shortsighted of a pub to be so precious! And it is shortsighted: the unruly pig is a place we would have continued to visit for our family special occasions- we are not wealthy- a meal at this price needs saving up for. However this has put me off, and although we had a nice time together and the food was nice, we decided it would be our last time visiting. The food is good… but not quite as good as they think. The roast potatoes are a bit overdone and we visited at 2.45pm and they had been sitting you could tell. We were told that between 3 diners we would get two little bowls or roast potatoes and two of greens. We got one of each- the same amount as last visit where we were just two. They were trying to persuade us into starters because there would be quite a wait they said for the main course. We said we didn’t need starters and the roast dinner then arrived a very short time later. No wait. What with this and the cake I suddenly felt they were doing all they could to squeeze money out of their customers. I can understand that- but it’s not like we weren’t spending money. In my world 140 pounds for lunch is A LOT!!!! I know they pride themselves on the service here- and the young wait staff are very sweet; but the management should be looking to keep their local custom in my opinion. All for the sake of a little cupcake!!🙄😬

The Food was very delicious but it would have been more delicious if there would have been more of it.... I had a Risotto, absolut outstanding in terms of taste, but it was more of a little spread of Risotto... It made me more hungry and thats hardly the point of food... especially expensive Food... The good part was I still had (a lot) room for dessert and the Panna Cotta was just fabulous, really loved it and it was a normal Panna Cotta size!

We tried quite a few things from the menu (nibbles, starters, mains and one pudding) and every single dish was amazing! The service was also spot on - friendly but professional, attentive without being in your face at any time. It genuinely felt like a bunch of great people determined to give you a good dining experience. (They even gave us some milk to take home for tea the next day!)

People keep rating this place as amazing, and the photos of the food they share look great, but our experience was far from good. The duck was bloody and the risotto was bland with a bitter taste and the rice was not cooked, I don't mean al dente, I mean not cooked at all. It was embarrassing as we took our parents here telling them how good it was from what people had told us, it seems the place might have been good once, but is now not what it used to be.

Staying nearby, checked it out for a poss evening meal - no way at those insane prices! I reckon you would drop 50+ quid per person. Smoked octopus good grief! Whatever happened to the cheap and cheerful English pub?

Pleasant experience and good food.

We had the best meal out ever. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable.

The food is delicious. But when you go home still hungry after three courses, there is something quite wrong. I have been going to the Unruly Pig for my birthday every year for a long time, and even before when it was the British Larder and before that, when it was the Cherry Tree. Every time at the Unruly Pig I always have the gnocchi, as I'm veggie and the gnocchi is just divine. However, I have noticed over the years that each time, the portions get smaller and smaller. This year was definitely our last year going, because paying £23 for 8 little pieces of gnocchi does not a main meal make. We then had the sharing cheese board, that had enough cheese for 1 person, not two, at a cost of £17.50. The desserts were not too bad, but still on the small side. Then we come on to the issue of the bill. As it was my birthday, I told the service staff twice about the offer I received for a free Prosecco drink, as it was my birthday. They said yes, it will be taken off the bill. It was served with warm wishes for my birthday. Imagine our surprise when the bill came, and we were charged £16 for the free birthday Prosecco! We had to have the bill changed, and when it came back we noticed a £1 charge for Red Rose Chain. When we queried it, it seems that the Unruly Pig sponsor the theatre group, and the way they do it is to charge their customers an extra £1 on their bill. Without their permission. Now, had we been asked if we would like to donate, we certainly would have. But the fact that they tried to take our money without our permission for a charity donation did not sit well with us, and so we asked to have it taken off the bill. It was all rather embarrassing, to have to fix the bill twice before it came back to us in the proper amount. Sadly, we will not be going back to the Unruly Pig. The cost of the food compared to the portion size is just not right, and even though I am not a big eater, I left the restaurant hungry. The bill debacle simply clinched that for us, and so next year we will be looking elsewhere. Sad, as it was our tradition for the longest time.

Amazing meal, one of the best we’ve had!

Absolutely loved the wine collection. Not very often that I find a wine I enjoy in an establishment. Food was gorgeous. I admit, portions could've been slightly larger, but that's not why I went there for. Pork was cooked to perfection. Slightly pink. Everyone in my group appreciated their dishes. Well done.

My all time favourite place. We’ve been going regularly for years. Incredible seasonal and creative local ingredients dishes - including exciting vegetarian options. The staff are so helpful and make it a wonderful special relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful restaurant quirky atmosphere and dog friendly.

Anniversary dinner here and everything was fabulous, a little card on the table wishing us happy anniversary , a nice little touch, the food was great, we had the tasting menu , service was good, really enjoyable evening.

Service was absolutely amazing, really professional and we were well taken care of. I had said it was our anniversary and we received a signed card and decorated puddings, it made a perfect night. Our dog was thought of too, with biscuits he enjoyed and a bowl of water. It was very reassuring as we had to bring him out. The food itself is out of this world, my favourite dish was the bbq octopus, which wasn't what I expected at all with a very tasty dairy free foam. The menu is small, so make sure you check before you go as it changes frequently ESPECIALLY if you have an allergy/intolerance. If you are vegan, dairy free, gluten free etc. be prepared to only have one choice from each course that you like. However, it is clearly because this is because it is one dish done WELL that you will not find it anywhere else. The wine list seemed quite exclusive, so a novice like myself found it tricky to choose, but thankfully it was nice wine when I eventually did. Overall, it was a really special meal that suited our occasion ❤️

Sunday lunch - OK so when you arrive and you're told the meat is cooked on the joint and it will be a 20-25 min wait, expectations are high. Well we were not disappointed ! Five of us dined, four had the beef 3 x fillet and one sirloin and one of had lamb. The beetroot that came with the beef, OMG that was insane ! I could have just had a plate of that and would have been happy. The gravy, well the last time I had gravy that flavoursome was Sunday lunch at the Hand & Flowers. Staff were great food was great, will definately go back, and would most certainly recommend>

Time for an update! Original review: Very, very good indeed. Friendly place, excellent food, and espresso to die for! And now, I can safely say that this is one of the very few eateries that I can, with no reservations at all, recommend to anyone. I’ve never heard a bad word about it from any friend or family member that has been to The Unruly Pig on my recommendation. That is rare. The Unruly Pig is consistent, and improving here and there as time goes on. Superb.

Never managed to eat there but the menu looked good

I had an awesome time at The Unruly Pig and tried their tasting menu, which was excellent. The oysters were a highlight for me. If you're wondering which one to go for, I'd say the xo sauce chilli is the way to go. The other one is good too, but the xo sauce makes it even better. The only thing I'd mention is that the cuttlefish was a bit salty for my taste, but everything else was perfect. I'll definitely be coming back again!

They say they're listed in the top 50 ranking of best gastropubs. You can taste that... the food is extraordinary! Ofcourse the prices are therefore higher than average. But still very recommendable. In the toilet there were Chinese Mao propaganda posters and at the entrance a big photo of Johnny Rotten which we thought was odd but funny. All in all a nice place.

Hard to comment on atmosphere as we were sat in the garden area where there was one other small table. We had the set buffet Sunday lunch menu, food was OK but portion size for vegan/vegetarian were poor - a tiny, thin cracker with a few peas and some leaves in comparison to the vast array for meat eaters. The options available were a clear after thought - even having covered all vegetables in butter. When this was queried it was evident this hadn't even been a consideration. The fact there is no other option for children, or ability to remove the children from the buffet option to order their own food shows a lack of understanding. Whilst some of the food looked impressive on first glance, on deeper inspection, very item was unnecessarily elaborate. For the massively extortionate price per person and inability to factor in children and vegetarian/vegan guests appropriately, we won't be going back.

This was our second visit, so nice to go somewhere the staff genuinely know what good service. Not to mention the food which is out of this world. Just wish I lived nearer.

Food was OK but not amazing and the service wasn't as good as other pubs I have been to in the area.

The food and service were both very good, the service particularly. I was however, rather put off by the bowl of dog biscuits I found on my table upon arrival plus where we sat the smell of dogs was rather overpowering. Perhaps a dog free section for those not wanting to share their experience with other people’s pets might be an idea.

We had the tasting menu, on Thursdays this is currently available for £49 rather than £75. Every course was perfect, very good value. Service was very good, every course is described as it is bought to the table. This did become quite amusing as it seems the staff, rather than being taught about the dishes they are serving, are instead taught exactly what to say. I can imagine they are lined up in the kitchen before service repeating their lines to Chef. Can't blame the serving staff, I'm sure they are only doing as they've been told to do. Towards the end of our meal, with the repetitions echoing around the other tables, we did struggle not to laugh out loud. But all in very good, highly recommended, we'll definitely be back. And if the owners happen to read this. Be brave, let your staff show some of their personality.

It was a special occasion and our visit to the Unruly Pig really made it. Not only were we in special company but the food was amazing and so beautifully presented. We had a very warm welcome from Brendan the owner and the waiting staff were wonderful and very helpful and knowledgable. This restaurant has such a great reputation and it is easy to see why when lucky enough to be there. I love art and design, so together with the art work and decor I also enjoyed the surroundings and atmosphere. The vegan dishes are incredibly over-priced and the portion sizes were awful compared to the meater meals. Unbelievably expensive for a very plain meal (lots of balsamic vinegar...) Service was great and the pub atmosphere was nice. Just avoid unless you're there to eat a lot of meat and butter.
