There are 'good' welcomes...There are 'great' welcomes...and then there is a Danyella welcome! From the 1st moment she was delightful, helpful, absolutely charming and lovely! Lovely fire in the REAL grate! Good beers and altogether a smashing way to drink a few beers! Thank you!

A stunning pub with a warm welcome. Dogs included. I love the terrace outside for eating, drinks, with an outside bar area overlooking Knaresborough Cricket Field. We've eaten here many times and the food, atmosphere and staff couldn't be better. A lovely place all round.

I have too state that that I have a soft spot for the people here, but I think that is a reflection on their hospitality rather than me being a big spender! I love quizzes and their Friday night one is my favourite to visit. I'm jotting this down because I've just had a pizza here and it was delicious. It is in a beautiful location, ideal for a traffic free walk with the kids and dogs along the picturesque river Nidd, so what I am saying is, if you are thinking of visiting, for a drink, food, quiz, or just the walk, slot it in your satnav and knock yourself out. Highly recommended. And thanks.

I was at the union , now the cricketers, lovely pub but I was disappointed too be served lager topped up from previously pulled and sat under the pumps , makes your drink flat and taste terrible , chef with long hair and no hat serving drinks too , and considering there was a wake on denim shorts and vest top was a bit disrespectful in my opinion , disappointed as I have always liked the pub and thought after the take over it would have at least remained a well run establishment

This used to be our ‘local’ but in recent years it had declined to the extent that I gave it a poor review. However, having seen that it had been refurbished and rebranded to The Cricketers, we called in for a drink. Such an improvement in many respects. They still had a reasonably good choice of real ales, but the new decor was a terrific improvement and the new management very friendly. The place is so clean we barely recognised it. We didn’t eat but the menu looked interesting and well priced. Glad to see this pub has been revived because its in a great location and perfect for watching the cricket behind the pub where they have a beer garden suited for those hot summer days!

Had lunch here on 10th November. Dined here on several occasions and always had good food & service even though it appears to change management fairly regularly. We ordered the gourmet burger and drinks. Overall great food especially the burger & salad. Great Service and friendly staff. £25 for lunch for two with drinks, can't get any better than that. Really good to see it busy. Would definitely recommend. Will be back.

Having ordered a few drink I personally asked for no ice in my drink (as I do every single time I order a soft drink, even thought the woman behind the bar told me I asked for ice!) I told the lady sorry but I don't want ice. Her actions after this were terrible. Slamming another glass down and telling me to pick it out myself. It was a coke not a sprint so I feel as though she should have sorted her mistake. Absolutely zero customer service skills, in fact she was horrible. Lovely place and cricket ground behind but terrible staff. Not worth paying in washers!

Recently changed management. The food is great if a little big but well worth the money. Craig and Pedro are renovating the pub later in the year. The beer garden allows you to watch cricket when there is a game on. I have tried 3 mains so far and I have loved them. Well worth a visit especially if you are on you way home after visiting the Great Yorkshire Show. They also allow dogs in the garden and the bar but not the restaurant side when food is being served. Please call in and say hello. I have tried to rate the below, service, food and value 4.5

The headline sums up my review nicely. The Union is somewhere we like to pop in after a wee walk in the summer from where we live. The beer garden is fantastic and offers views over the cricket ground. We've always been warmly welcomed and found the staff friendly.I'm not a fan of the choice of beer, it's very generic and unambitious with a few casks of very mediocre ale on offer with the usual bland mainstream lager brands. Nothing to get excited about at all. I wish they would improve that and I would visit a lot more often.

Having worked at the Union for nearly two years now under the excellent management and Susan and Gary I must say previous reviews leave me baffled. John for example who complains of the entrance area smelling unclean. Now sir while I have the upmost respect for your comments, I find this odd on two points. 1. I can assure you the toilets are cleaned and checked regularly and have never smelt. 2. There are two doors between the entrance way and each toilet also the front door is always open creating a breeze. I can only assume that,if they did smell, that John (quite a talent) has a sense of smell not unlike a blood hound. Anyhow. I'm not here to address all previous reviews. Since taking over the pub Sue and Gary have put there heart and souls in to it, from the addition of a second beer garden (all the work done by Gary) to a constant effort to keep the food, beer and customer service up to a high standard. I often eat and socialise here myself. But don't take my word for. Pop and see us. You'll be pleasantly surprised I assure you. Having worked in pubs on and off most of my adult life I can honestly say I'm 110% proud to work front of house in this lovely ever growing pub.

Just had roast beef and Yorkshire puddings at The Union - absolutely fantastic - we are stuffed to bursting!Roast Beef, Yorkshires, roast and new potatoes, carrots, peas, kale, cauliflower cheese (in its own little bowl)! And you get a full boat of gravy each ☺️. You can also order extra Yorkshires (we did) and pigs in blankets (we didn't - thank goodness, wouldn't have got them in)! All fast, hot and beautifully cooked. You can also get other meats - the roast pork comes with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce - my son had this - it was also beautifully cooked. Staff are lovely - really pleasant girl behind the bar and we also spoke to the landlady - very friendly and welcoming (my son got an extra boat of gravy - it was delish)! Lovely beer garden and saw high chairs for the young families. Toilets and pub spotless. Looking forward to next trip already! ☺️

My wife and I visited this pub on two consecutive evenings whilst staying at a cottage a short walk away. The pub is situated adjacent to the cricket club and they were playing cricket on the days we were there. A nice interior with plenty of seating (seating also available outside) and a very friendly and efficient service. The food was excellent and extremely good value – far better value than the south of England where my wife and I live. There is also a very good selection of draught beers. Overall, an excellent choice of eating place.

This pub is on a steady decline and probably won't last for long. Standard Marston's beer but limited choice and very basic Marston's small pub menu.Th first thing that hits you when you walk in is the smell. Pity because the two previous landlords built this pub upwell but because of disagreements with the brewery, both left. The entrance area smells of unclean toilets and the bar areas smell of ... uncleaned bars. Give it a miss and head towards Knaresborough for the Mother Skipton's Inn or the Half Moon pub. So, it was interesting to see the difference in welcome and food. Both meals were well presented and tasted very good. As this has been my local pub for 14 years I wouldn't normally give it a review, but having read a few recent entries I thought that I should say something.First of all I will say that I respect the rights of people to say what they genuinely feel, and if someone hasn't enjoyed their meal, or if they believe that the service could be better - it is their right to say so. Personally I haven't eaten here so can't comment other than to say that people I know have been more than pleased with the food. And as far as service is concerned - I reckon that Sue and Gary are as welcoming hosts as you could find, and the same goes for their staff.Of course that is a matter of opinion and I respect the rights of others to differ. What I really can't accept on a Trip Advisor review however is sheer inaccuracy and I really have to take Gary H to task. As previously said, I fully accept his right to say that he didn't enjoy his visit to the pub, but to say that locals no longer come here is completely wrong. The fact that he makes the comment at all would suggest that he is a local himself, and although I have no idea who he is - can I point out to him that I still drink here, along with Ray, Roger, Fred, Steve, Christine, Ian, Robbie, Alan, Jim, John, TC, JC, the guys from the cricket club etc etc etc. I could go on to name dozens of other people and their partners but suggest that I have said more than enough to paint a more accurate picture (besides - I wouldn't want to offend any others that I have missed out!). I don't know who Gary H is but whereas he might be a local of Knaresborough he clearly isn't a local of the Union, or he would know better, and he is clearly not qualified to make such an inaccurate statement.

I'd previously been to this pub last year for my birthday and the food was diabolical. Out of 4 meals only the gammon was edible. Also the welcome was NOT welcoming at all. Needless to say we said we would never go back. However, on hearing that new owners had taken it over in APRIL 2014 I thought I'd give it a go. So glad I did. The food was well cooked, service was great and the atmosphere was so different to last time - for the better! I have been back about 6/7 times sampling different things and each one was lovely. May favourite is the Chilli king prawns, king prawn jacket and had a really lovely curry. They are reasonably priced too, especially the 'lighter lunches' which are quite filling. Their real ales are great too as they have my favourite on draught.

We visited this pub on a Wednesday lunch time for my sisters birthday lunch, having seen the 2 for £10 board outside. The dining area was empty and there was one gentleman in the bar area next door ( which we didn't mind as we had 2 under 5's with us). The lad behind the bar was friendly and got us a high chair straight away. Having looked at the menu 2 of us chose from the two for £10 and 2 from the lunch menu. (Choose from a select part of the menu and get either a starter or dessert for £1.50 and add a soft drink for £1 or alcoholic drink for £2) there is no children's menu so we got an extra portion of chips and let her share from everyone else's. The starters were slow to come out (15 min or so for Nachos and breaded mushrooms) but were hot and tasted ok. The nachos are from a kit using salsa and guacamole from a squeezy bottle and the jalapeño's weren't fresh but we polished them off.The mains took another 40/45 minutes to come out and one of our "not your usual toad in the holes" was stone cold in the middle. The lad apologised and took it into the kitchen, a minute later he came out and asked if we wanted it heating up or did we want a fresh one making. Which stunned us a bit to be honest. Another 10/15 min later he brought the fresh one out steaming hot. I would like to say we enjoyed them now it was hot but the middle was stodgy and a bit wet and the edges were rock solid. When we had to double check something for the ingredients (as my mum has allergies) he went to go check the pack. My sisters burger was rubbery and tasteless so the only person who enjoyed their meal was my dad who had the gammon. Not the home cooked meal we were expecting from this place. Won't be going back.

For our first ever visit we called in today 19.11.13 for lunch and chose the 2 for £10 menu. We were delighted with the quality of the 10oz Gammon meal. The gammon was superb, very tender and juicy along with the twice fried, very tasty chips, plus egg, pineapple and peas. The service was friendly and the surroundings were comfortable and spacious. We are looking forward very much to our next visit. Jean & Brian of Harrogate

It was my birthday on Sunday & some friends were 'taking me out' & we stopped at the Union & when I walked in my sons had arranged a surprise party for me with lots of friends. It was great in the area at the front of the pub. it worked out well & my sons mentioned had been really helpful when it came to decorating with balloons etc. worth remembering for a function :) (didn't use outside seating but i did have a drink outside in the summer & its really nice)

We have supported this pub for around 20 years now with all the changes of landlords.Change of landlord again in last few months so gave it a try with special menus and offers.Opted for the cuury night and when we ordered one curry of the two we had with half chips and half rice was charged an extra £1 and ended up with less than what we would have done normally. The two curries arrived and were worse than the cheap packages you get as a meal deal from the supermarkets to eat at home and very little meat. The menus showed all this spectacular food which looked like a Wetherspoons or Yates's menu but the food was dreadful and the price certainly was not cheap. We have tried to support our local pubs but this is the last straw for this one with better deals elsewhere, not good for a pub thats been running a few months now.

ordered 7.10pm - lady (new owner) ran the bar and was waitressing too. Instead of chips I asked for a baked potato but she did not think it was possible due to brewery portions! and had to ask the chef. Said it was ok to have a baked potato, she came and apologised after 50 minutes for the delay but they had loads of orders, there were only 6 people in front of us ! It came after an hour and chips on my plate ! they were overcooked and awful. Just felt they made us wait so we would order more drinks. She took NOTHING off the bill even though she knew we were not happy. It use to be run so well and it was a shambles.

We really wanted to like this pub as we live within walking distance. We went on a Saturday lunchtime. The menu was very basic and unimaginative. I ordered the ham and tomato sandwich and my husband went for the Cheese Ploughmans. We waited 25 minutes which seemed a long time seeing as there was no cooking involved. My sandwich was average but the Ploughmans was terrible. The cheese was tasteless and rubbery, the edges of the lettuce leaves were brown and the tiny bowl of pickle was totally smooth and clearly had come straight out of a squeezy plastic bottle. The menu had mentioned apple, but there was none on the plate. The bread was the only edible and decent bit of the meal. For £7.95 and virtually no preparation required, it should have included a good mature cheddar and some decent home made chutney. When the male staff member came to clear our plates, he did not ask us if we enjoyed our meal, in fact he didn't say a word. We shall not be bothering with The Union again.

This was the first time we have been to the Union since Paul left. We thought we should give it a try and see how it was fairing. It was 1pm on Friday lunch time and the place was empty and didn't even look as if food was available apart from the 2 for £10 sign outside, no menu's or settings on tables. Apart from a few drinking in the tap room and one couple eating lunch outside, my husband ask for a menu and was given a 2 for £10 also the main menu on looking over both we decided not to bother and walked out. Why oh why do Marston brewery think their plastic food is as good as Paul's Mum's home cooking. These brewery's should think hard before being so greedy as to the profit they collect from a successful country pub, sorry Marston's you like many brewer's will be having another unprofitable Public House closing down for good..

This was my third visit to The Union at Calcutt, near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. The Union is a Marston’s pub, located in the centre of the village of Calcutt, adjoining Knaresborough and close to Harrogate (on the eastern side). It is a "Cask Marque" pub and is featured in the Good Beer Guide 2012. The pub proclaims itself to be “a traditional village inn focusing on real ale and home cooked food”, and this it certainly achieves. There is car parking and wheelchair access. Dogs are allowed in the bar area. The pub has a traditional bar area, (with open fire and dartboard), serving a changing selection of excellent cask-conditioned “real ales”. There is also a larger lounge / dining area, pleasant beer garden, and decked, (part covered), terrace area, all of which spectacularly overlook Knaresborough Forest Cricket Club, the Nidd Gorge, and Knaresborough Crag beyond. Altogether, it is a most delightful setting. The food is very much “home cooked” in style, like your Mum would make, but rather more of it! Sunday lunch is unquestionably as good as you will get anywhere in the Harrogate area, and comes in vast quantity! It is, quite simply, superb and stunning value for money. Nice touches too, like condiments in little ramekins, (with the appropriate number of spoons!), rather than a central basket full of plastic sachets! This is NOT a “gastro-pub”. It is a perfect example of why we want to eat first-class English “pub grub” in homely surroundings, prepared with honesty, and served with care and attention to detail. It ticks all the boxes in my book. But here’s the rub …. Superb Roast Beef Sunday Lunch, for two, more than most can eat, and WITH DRINKS ….. just over £19.00!!, IN TOTAL!! Outstanding! In short, a thoroughly recommended traditional pub, serving quality real ales and quality real food in beautiful surroundings. 10 / 10. What more do you want?

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
