Again another faultless night out, with excellent service, and amazing food. Catered for my partner who is gluten free excellently. Would recommend to anyone, you would not be disappointed. Looking forward to our next meal there.

Had Sunday lunch yesterday and it was absolutely delicious. Great choice too. I love this place. We eat out quite a lot, but it is still my favourite. Everything is cooked to order. Always a great selection. Staff FAB. What more can I say.

My family and I have eaten here over the years, and their food is always good, especially the cheesy scone appetisers. Tonight I tried the pie. Chicken, ham and mushroom; incredible. Proper pie with shortcrust pastry inside and out. I kid you not, that is the best pie I've tasted in a long time.

Sunday Lunch is excellent. Their regular menu is impressive. food is well-cooked and freshly cooked. The staff are friendly and helpful. my go-to for a special occasion.

We were recommended this place by our holiday let. We had a lovely meal, the homemade pie was delicious. The service was great and friendly. Also the price was very reasonable. When we go back to this area we will definitely come back.

My husband and I decided to give the food here a try as we were looking for somewhere local to take visiting family when they come to stay later on in the month. Boy am I glad we did! The food and service were absolutely fantastic. We couldn't believe we were getting the quality of food that we were served here in Lydney!! The presentation of the dishes and the quality of the food was wonderful. We booked a table for our visiting family before we left. This is definitely going to be one of our new favourite places to eat.

First, let me address the positives. The complimentary cheese and onion roll with local butter has always been a winner here, delicious. Additionally, the citrus sponge dessert was fabulous; warming, light and a great balance of citrus and sweet. Staff were friendly and attentive. On the flip side, this is a restaurant we have visited a few times over the last 8 years or so. We collectively felt that some of the dishes always seemed familiar. This time around I ordered the chicken with dauphinois potatoes for main. The chicken was tender and well seasoned. However, the dauphinois were dry and seemed more like a boiled potato stack, lacking the rich, classic dauphinois depth of flavour. The chive and cream sauce was excessively thin, running off the food rather than coating it. The side of vegetables was leaning on Al dente, which I don’t mind, but nothing to write home about. My wife ordered the steak, slightly overdone but well seasoned and not a bad cut of meat. Same story with the peppercorn sauce sadly, very thin and not meeting the over £3 asking. The only other comment would be ambiance related. We were treated to a melody of Abba and other classics which didn’t seem to fit a restaurant environment. It wasn’t excessively loud, but could not be ignored. Feel a 3.5 stars is a fair assessment but sadly not an option.

We have never been to Lydney before so did not know where to eat, luckily we found this lovely place. There was only another couple in the restaurant which was a pity. The waitresses were really lovely and helpful. My husband had the ham, egg and chips (the ham was particularly good) and I had the prawn baguette and chips. Again very tasty. This is the place to go if you are hungry, both my husband and I could not finish our food which is unusual for us. Try them.

Amazing afternoon tea at the Ugly Duckling. Loads of delicious sandwiches and huge variety of cakes and sweet treats. Catered for allergies brilliantly. Service fantastic too. Best afternoon tea I have ever had. Great value.

We randomly selected this restaurant for a birthday dinner at the last minute because it was close to where we lived and we’d never eaten there. All of our party are good cooks and well travelled so we’re all very discerning. Forgetting the “tired” decor of the restaurant the food was EXCELLENT and the ingredients clearly well sourced and of quality. & expertly prepared, and all knowledgeably cooked and well presented. Portions were a delicious combination of balanced flavours and balanced portions and just the right amount on the plate. The service was politely informal yet efficient and discreet. The 2 waiting staff worked hard and showed good attention to detail, our 3 courses were expertly spaced and we did not feel rushed or overwhelmed. There was long enough to digest and anticipate the next plate. We were more than happy to leave a hefty tip. There wasn’t one of us who could raise any criticism about the food or the evening. Every mouthful was a delicious, master cheffed treat. We will definitely go back many times I expect.

Me and a friend came in for a meal unfortunately they staff were to busy fannying around in the back bit of the bar area so after waiting what felt like 15-20 minutes to be served we decided to leave. Good job we weren’t robbing the joint hey! We wondered over the road and had a fantastic Indian meal.

Recently had a meal here with 8 others friends and the food was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Recommend to book a table prior going. But highly recommend going.

Made an early table booking in the restaurant for a special occasion. On arrival no booking could be found. Although there would have been plenty of room in the dining room for a table to be added (with social distancing in mind ) they refused to do so. On a busy Saturday evening we had no option but to accept a table in the bar. A rather patronising apology followed while at the same time suggesting that I may have booked another restaurant in another town with the same name. " We get this a lot " were the actual words used ! During the course of the evening it transpired that the young couple on the next table in the bar had also had their booking ' mislaid '. I have since sent a copy of my phone records to the restaurant clearly showing the time and date I made the booking. Would not trust them with a booking again therefore cannot recommend.

My boyfriend and I came here last weekend for dinner and we had a brilliant visit. It turned out that we'd messed up our booking but the staff were so lovely and accommodating and found us a table anyway. The food was superb and customer service was excellent. Thank you!

First post lockdown easing trip to the Forest of Dean, looking for a restaurant seems to be the only one in town and we weren't disappointed.Food was very tasty, good choice on menu of different cuisines, we had a shared starter, two mains, shared pudding and a few rounds of drinks all for under 50 quid. The starter was perfect proportion, the main was ample, two plates arrived with good amount of food, seconds later side dishes of veg and potato's arrived, one each.Let's say we didn't go hungry.It was a third visit to the area but first were we could go out and get to know people, the staff were great filled us in on all the local pubs, cafes for breakfast etc.Definitely would recommend.

Excellent Roast Turkey lunch delivered - on time, hot, delicious and plentiful. The butterscotch sponge pudding and profiteroles were great too. This restaurant has done a great job of home deliveries throughout lockdown

Had a Sunday roast delivered. Food arrived on the time said and was lovely and hot. The pork was so tender and all the portions were of a good size. Pudding looks delightful. Would recommend to anyone and once lockdown slows we will definitely be visiting .

When we went to collect our order a member of staff was waiting in the car park. He asked us to wait then returned with our order and put it directly into the boot of the car, limiting the chance of potential covid transmission. We had the roast beef, of which there was plenty, the spuds were good and we also had carrots, cabbage and cauliflower cheese, oh and a Yorkshire pudding, all cooked to perfection. There was plenty of very tasty gravy. The portion sizes were just right for us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening in this popular restaurant shortly before the latest lockdown came into effect. The food was very good and reasonably priced and covid measures were in place which made us feel comfortable. Considering how busy they were the service was excellent and staff very welcoming. The restaurant which was originally the skittle alley for the public house next door is very popular so advance booking is recommended.

We have eaten here many times and have always had a fabulous meal and service without exception. I feel ashamed that I have not left a review before because this place really does serve exceptional food at very reasonable prices. We had another fabulous meal here on Saturday evening. They have adapted very well to the new COVID regulations and were really well organised. They had a little table to serve from which kept the serving staff at a good distance from the diners and was a very clever idea. The Tables are well spaced and there is plenty of room to get to and from your table without going anywhere near other guests. I am vegetarian and there are always thoughtful and interesting vegetarian options available. Thank you once again for a wonderful evening.

We called ahead to make sure the vegan menu we'd heard of was still available. We were told it was and on arrival we were given a full vegan menu with plenty of options for starters, mains and desserts. My husband had a sweet potato and squash curry which was delicious and I had vegetable charlotte which was presented beautifully and cooked to perfection! We would recommend visiting here if you are vegan, they take a lot of care to get it right. Lovely staff too, all friendly, especially our server.

We were on holiday and as we usually do we decided to eat out for a special treat , on researching we booked here as reviews were good ,on arrival we were met by a lovely friendly lady who proceeded to show us to what I can only explain looked like a room out the back which looked like a dark dingy village hall , our waitress then took our drinks order which arrived with very dirty glasses , so we mentioned this and they were replaced , meal was ordered and when it arrived was very good food after having my cutlery changed as this was dirty also , our waitress looked like she had just come home from a party ...very scruffy appearance and dirty trainers but the food was delicious , also another customer was constantly blowing her nose , we decided against ordering a pudding as my hubby noticed that the glasses we had our soft drinks in were also dirty , we paid our bill and left such a shame on the room and staff as the food was excellent

Whenever we visit the Forest of Dean we always go to the ugly duckling in Lydney. The staff are hard working and friendly. The food is always good quality and delicious. Can’t wait until our next visit. It’s always wise to book well in advance as they only have a few tables and are always busy.

First post lockdown visit and it was lovely. Food was superb as always, service was fantastic.The food here is the equal of any top London restaurant. Social distancing was good with one way system and hand sanatizer. Glad this restaurant has made it through COVID-19 as it is too good to lose.

I met up with 4 of my old work colleagues for lunch at the ugly duckling, we all had a different meal from the lunch time menu which had plenty of choice. Sandwiches bagettes wraps , jacket potatoes as well as more substantial meals. We all enjoyed our choices and the lovely coffees teas or bar drinks . Not the cheapest place to eat but not expensive either, and good home cooked food . Would reccomend lovely social setting comfy with nice friendly staff.

Went to the ugly duckling for my partners birthday. This place is a hidden gem! If you're looking for a fancy restaurant then perhaps you may be disappointed. However, if you're looking for great food and service for a reasonable price then this is the place to go. The pork belly was fantastic as was the roast beef. They also provide these little cheese muffins which are incredible! I'd also recommend the toffee pudding, fantastic!

This restaurant is attached to the Swan Hotel. It lacks 'atmosphere' but the food it good. Nothing flashy but a good range and nicely cooked. The waiting staff are very attentive but the service is a bit slow, however, this probably reflects the fact that the food is cooked from fresh. A good place for a relaxing meal and a very good price. If it was near where I live I would make it a regular.

Menu is the same week after week, l think it needs changing a lot more often, because regulars don’t have enough choice anymore

Booked a table for two on a Friday evening. Hadn’t been to this restaurant before so didn’t know what to expect.There was an extensive menu and prices were reasonable. We opted for the 3 courses for £19.95 and we were not disappointed by the food or the service. The waitresses were very helpful and friendly and we were not rushed.What we felt did let the place down though was the lack of comfort and atmosphere. The room is quite a large almost square space with a hard floor and bare walls so the volume of the people in the restaurant was amplified as there was nothing to deaden the sound. The tables looked old, cutlery cheap and canteenish and the chairs, which looked like nice leather dining chairs were actually quite worn and uncomfortable; any support in the back of mine had long since departed and I saw a lady on another table swap her chair for another I suspect, for the same reason.I think the restaurant would be ideal for a large gathering such as a birthday meal etc but for two people it lacked something..A little bit of imagination with the decor and furnishings and I would have happily given 5 stars.

Visited this restaurant today with friends, and we had the most amazing lunchI do not know the star rating for this place but l would give certainly give it 5 stars.I have visited once before and was very impressed but todays lunch was exceptional.Thank you to all the staff.

As a couple on a low carb diet, we can normally work our way round most menus by avoiding potatoes and pastries and asking for extra veg or salads. We'd been recommended this restaurant years ago but only made it for the first time last night. For a starter I had shredded lamb with pickled ribbons of cucumber and a sauce of yoghurt and mint. My husband had a very retro prawn cocktail. We managed to stop the waitress bringing us bread and popcorn nibbles before our food but the prawn cocktail still arrived with brown bread and butter. For our second course I had a fabulous breast of duck served pink with leg meat in a sort of spring roll. My husband had a sirloin steak with mushroom and grilled tomato. The vegetables arrived without any butter glaze but were nicely crunchy. Chips arrived, the waitress hadn't realised that the chips were potatoes. Lols. We had a bottle of Sauvignon blanc (apparently the last one grabbed from the pub next door owned by the same business). Apart from the small confusion of what constitutes carbs, it was a very good flavoursome meal. The downside was a retirement party of 18 at another table. It seems they don't have groups this large often but the dining room has very little in the way of soft furnishings to deaden the noise. It was rather like being in an indoor pool noisewise. This won't put us off returning but we will check next time to see if any large groups are booked in. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We searched on trip advisor for a Restaurant in Lydney as we stayed in the area on Friday night. The Ugly Ducking seemed to have good reviews. The Menu consisted of a large variety of dishes and there was something for everyone. We were given some complimentary rolls and tempura. The food was excellent and good value for money. Service was also excellent very attentive staff who couldn't do enough to help. Definately worth a visit.

We visited The Ugly Duckling with friends for my birthday while on holiday. We selected it as the Trip Advisor reviews were so good and we could see why. We each had a 3 course meal, all of which were excellent, our server was friendly and attentive, and the price was really good value. There was choice of 2 courses for £16.99 or 3 courses for £19.99 and also a separate menu with a good variety of dishes individually priced. I had croque monsieur fish cakes for main course which were delicious. We had an issue with the red wine being slightly corked but the bottle was replaced immediately without a quibble so this wasn't an issue. If we had been staying longer we would have gone back for another meal. All we could talk about afterwards was what great value the food was and how they could charge more for such excellent food.

What a super vegan menu. Lots of choice and absolutely fabulous. Presented beautifully. Charming young lady served us and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The room would benefit from some soft furnishings which would help with the acoustics.

We were a party of 27 people on Saturday night and we were all extremely happy with our meal at The Ugly Duckling. The staff were fantastic and were more than happy for me to arrive early to decorate the room with balloons and banners. All of our starters, mains and desserts were brought out together at the same time which is not easy for a table of 27 so thank you very much. We will definitely be coming back, everything was superb!

Decided to try this restaurant recommended by a neighbour,what a find.

Myself and my wife booked a table for 8pm Friday 17th May as we had booked to stay at the Swan pub next door for 2 nights for my birthday (sorry for the late review!). When we entered the Ugly Duckling we were a bit worried to find just one other table (of four) occupied and worried what to expect despite the waitress assuring us that it was normally busy. We needn't have worried in the slightest - the food was absolutely superb, the service friendly and the price incredibly cheap for the choice and quality on offer. Several complimentary nibbles were served while we waited for our food. Three superb courses, a decent bottle of Rioja, port with the cheese and a Tia Maria for a total bill of £60-odd. Superb value! When we said we wanted to go back on the Saturday evening we were warned that they would be busy with 2 large parties but squeezed us in. It was a case of deja-vu, again absolutely stunning food, good service (with profuse apologies for delays due to the large parties, but the service was still perfectly acceptable) and another bill of virtually 1/2 of what we might have reasonably expected. I really cannot rate the food highly enough, most especially the pulled pork, black pudding and chorizo croquettes for starter which is absolutely divine! Compliments to the chef - you are doing an absolutely fantastic job!

Excellent food with plenty of gluten free options on the lunch deal, 2 courses for £11. I had the haddock with wilted spinach and potatoes/veg and a gluten free toffee sponge. A little dark inside but an informal, relaxed atmosphere with knowledgable and helpful staff. The restaurant is just round the corner from The Swan pub. Just a 5mim walk fro the coop car park 60p for 3hrs.

This is our second time to the pudding night at The Ugly Duckling. All I can say is WOW they get better and better. I am a fussy eater and the set menu I liked one of f one meal and one off another. No problem they sorted it. The puddings are amazing. But by far the best thing (apart from the food) is the staff friendly happy and chatty. Made our evening. Cant wait for the next one. Or even just a trip out for a meal.

Called in for lunch on our way to Speech House Hotel. Local pub that serves good honest value for money food in a friendly atmosphere. Proper side salad with all the trimmings and good sized portions. Would call again when visiting the forest!

There were 30 of us and I think the staff at the Ugly Duckling were brilliant. I arrived a bit early and the waitress helped me put some banners up. All the waitresses were helpful and attentive and the food was lovely. Everything about the evening ran smoothly and the price per head was very good. I would definitely recommend it and hope to go there again soon!

Visited early on a Thursday evening with my wife for our wedding anniversary. The restaurant was quite and uncluttered with plenty of space between tables which I like. Not what you might call a cosy room but personally I liked the minimalist feel.

Having already been to a Pudding Evening once this year, we decided on a second go and this time take some special friends. We had a very good main course of Chicken and Dauphine Potatoes. Couldn't wait to get started on the Puddings. There was a wonderful choice. I had Rocky Road, Frangipane, Rhubarb and Gin mousse Strawberry Meringue plus a few others. Every one superb. And when The Ugley Duckling say Home Made Puddings they really mean Home Made. What a wonderful way to spend my Birthday. Thank you Peter and all at the Ugley Duckling for yet another wonderful meal. 10 out of 10.

My son's 21st - we had 16 diners and everyone chose from the two (daily and a la carte) excellent menus. The food was clearly all freshly prepared, without undue delay and delicious. These are good, basic, enjoyable dishes that leave you feeling satisfied - and comforted. There was a high standard of attentive staff and well presented, properly seasoned and generous food. The lad said he had a brilliant day. Any down sides? None - if you don't mind walking a few yards from the nearest parking.

What the restaurant lacks in atmosphere it more than makes up for in the quality of the food.

Friday evening and the restaurant was quite full. The food choice was very good and the service we received from the staff was warm, friendly and proficient. All the food was well presented and cooked to perfection. We were sat at the far end of a large room which made you feel a little of of way and quite remote. As the room was square with few distinctive features it lacked ambiance and in winter would probably feel cold.

My initial phone call to ask about their vegan options resulted in very good first impressions. It was no trouble to go through the menu and I was informed of their flexibility. On arrival, I met with a friendly host who was able to explain the menu and dishes fully. The environment was comfortable and spacious but nothing too plush. However, the food was great. Varied menu for all tastes. I was there for the vegan options. Most unexpected in such a small town. Well presented, tasty, good sized portion and great service. Highly recommended to all.

We have been dining at the Ugly Duckling for a long time now and it always serves excellent food and the service is brilliant. There is a varied menu and it is reasonably priced and the food is of very high quality. When our families or friends come to visit, they always request that we eat at the Ugly Duckling, as they enjoy it as much as we do. It is a real gem and we can't recommend it enough, thank you to all the staff and management!

Went here for family birthday meal not really sure what to expect as thought there was only alcarte food but pleasantly surprised as proper home made meals to excellent menu reasonable prices a little gem of a place tucked away in swan road would highly recommend staff very pleasant and helpful will defiantly go this restaurant again

We booked via phone for a hen party meal for 7. From the first booking on the phone to end of the meal the service was fantastic, with the staff attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and reasonably priced and we all had a great time. Special thanks to Kirsten (hope I've spelt correctly!) who was attentive and very helpful. If I lived locally I would definitely go again!

The Ugly Duckling is connected to The Swan. It is it's own business, but it's owned by the same people that own The Swan, and staffed by the staff who also work in The Swan, and they are brilliant, polite, friendly, and attentive.

A quaint little place off the main high street, we ventured after seeing positive reviews on TA not being from the area. We walked in and it’s 1 room with some sparse seating and tables laid out. We were slightly nervous. However ignoring the decor which is plain but clean, we ate some gorgeous food - set menu is more than adequate and we both thought better than main menu! We had the duck and risotto to start, duck and pork belly for main and he banana/toffee torte for dessert. Cooked beautifully! The service was very pleasant and we didn’t wait long at all between courses. A brilliant find and something different to our usual place to eat.

Booked for a party of 22... Excellent food and well presented, could not of asked for more. Great value for money. Offers a set menu (which most of our party went for). Along with a side menue. Clean falicites, curious extremely helpful staff. All food came out together, with no misplaced order even with minimum staff. Everyone in our party praised the whole evening.

Family party at the Ugly Duckling in Lydney last night, 22 people choosing from their 2 course or 3 course menu at a very reasonable price. Popcorn and complimentary garlic buns which were lush was a bonus. Food was excellent, nobody left anything on their plates. Very smooth service all night nothing too much trouble.

After a lifetime in catering I feel it such a shame when the skill of the staff is not reflected in the surroundings. It's not rocket science to get an interior designer to make the place feel like a restaurant. It's totally devoid of any ambiance or atmosphere which leaves the excellent food and service wasted.

What a hidden treasure we tried the delicately spiced burgers which are home made together with homemade coleslaw, salad garnish with lime dressing and delicious chips. We were recommended and were quite sceptical on arriving but the food was outstanding and would definitely return. We actually ate in the Swan Hotel Garden as it was a beautiful sunny day.

Food and presentation was wonderful. The staff was delightful. The atmosphere was so simplistic but not in a good way! We kept saying if only they had table clothes or even white paper this would add tremendously!

We managed to book a table even though the restaurant had been fully booked for Bank Holiday. We were not disappointed. Lovely clean and fresh ambiance, like a modern barn conversion. Very spacious with nice furniture. The menu was good with a reasonable variety. Service was really superb, went the extra to please. The food when delivered was fabulous, we were delighted. Large room with plenty of room between tables so no need to hear everyone else's conversations. Food choice excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality.The young waiting staff were friendly and helpful and the food arrived on very hot plates (cold plates being one of my hates!) Food was excellent & pleasant staff. Restaurant definitely needs some attention feels like a transport cafe. Lacks atmosphere & ambience candles on the tables & some background music wouldn't go a miss!!! This could be a little gem If it had a makeover!!!!

We arrived here after a recommendation by the Forest of Dean railway. The train stopped at this town and we skipped into the restaurant which had lots of Soave fir the kids and was still elegant enough for the adults. Food for both age groups was grand. Food was reasonably priced. Recommended.

Staff were pleasant and accommodating, especially as we were a big group of 15 and late to the pub. The food was incredibly good quality and priced. Would definitely go back.

At eat The Swan Inn, next door, and the food is prepared in The Ugly Duckling. Drinks service was very good but had to move tables as the surface was too tacky. The couple on the next table complained and it was cleaned within minutes. The food was ordered but took 40 minutes to arrive. I suspect that the omelette was cooking for 30 of those 40 minutes as it must rank as the worst omelette I have ever been served but the salad was very good. Informed Bar Staff who "Will tell chef". If you eat here, I suggest that you eat in the actual Ugly Duckling and you may have better service. I will not be returning

We visited for a birthday meal and the choice and quality of food is absolutely fantastic. Even better, the price is extremely reasonable on both food and wine. The service was also very good. The thing i like about it are the portion sizes, which for me are just right.

The Ugly Duckling Country Restaurant in Lydney is probably worth visiting the incredibly small town for, with its high quality ingredients being use to make honest and wholesome food. However it does took a long time to receive such things as toasted sandwiches to burgers because of a sincere lack of staff during the week. Whilst the food does makes it worth the wait, families with small children may find it an extreme test of patience.This restaurant has modern interior, stylish furnishings, and has tasteful rather than tacky duck-related ornaments on its windows.This is one to enjoy its very good food before finding something else to do in Lydney.

We were a walking party of nine and all say they enjoyed their meal. For my part, my meal whist being enjoyable it was not memorable. The belly of pork was cooked well, however were was the crackling? What did stand out was the excellent, attentive front of house staff.
