The Tytherleigh Arms in East Devon

We’d been in England for a week staying in Sidmouth where it has to be said the food is not good. We wanted to catch up with friends in Axminster so booked the Tytherleigh with no great expectations. What a nice surprise it was. The restaurant feels like it’s still in a pub but has the ambience of a good country restaurants - which it is. The 4 of us each had the tasting menu which isn’t cheap but it is very good. A great range of country and sea fare with service to match. Highly recommended.

Lovely dog friendly pub, delicious food and super friendly staff. We booked Sunday lunch online as we were visiting the area for the weekend. A very generous plateful of meat, veg, roast potatoes, yorkie. Plus extra dish parsnips, cauliflower cheese and carrot mash. (had some beef left which they kindly wrapped up for our dog) The dessert choice was good, finally picked ginger sponge with ice cream, partner had the gelato. Although wished he’d had the blackberry and apple crumble. Really great pub which we would visit again.

Having read reviews, we decided to visit and also stay over. The Tytherleigh Arms is a charming place with a warm atmosphere, period decor and welcoming staff. We checked in at our accommodation, which was warm, cosy and comfortable with all we needed for our overnight stay. We were given a warm welcome when we arrived in the restaurant, and after ordering drinks, we sat down to read through the menu. Orders taken we were shown to our table and were soon served with complimentary malt bread and amuse bouche. We chose a nice bottle of Australian Chardonay from the extensive wine list. Starters of mushroom parfait and seared scallops followed, which were excellent. Choices of both chicken and venison for main courses were cooked to perfection along with accompliments. Deserts of orange parfait and a local choice of cheeses accompanied by a measure of 10 Yr old port finished a wonderful meal before we relaxed in the bar with liqure coffees. Service was very attentive and polite in a very busy restaurant. Thank you all for a great experience, we hope to visit again in the future

What a stunning find! We were recommended by a couple of people to try The Tytherleigh Arms on our visit to the area and we weren't disappointed. The food was stunning, the service exceptional, and overall the pub had a lovely atmosphere and feel, with a friendly team who went out of their way to ensure we had the best evening. Would recommend and definitely revisit next time we are in the area.

First time at the Tytherleigh Arms, but we'll be definitely coming back. My wife and I went for Sunday lunch (top tip - book for 2pm and after as it's less busy) and were treated with a great set of dishes. She had the beef roast and I had the chicken with peas and buttermilk. The beef roast came with a beautiful selection of vegetables; carrot and swede mash, beetroot and turnip and a perfect cauliflower and broccoli cheese. The dessert did not disappoint either - a chocolate mousse with hazelnut ice cream and smashed up soil. All beautifully cooked and carefully presented - whoever is doing the cooking here knows what they're doing! As Londoners, we eat out a lot and have high expectations - this place really is very good at what it does.

Two night stay. Highly recommend this hotel/restaurant. The staff are uniformly excellent - friendly and extremely efficient. We really appreciated the excellent table service at dinner and breakfast. Food was a pleasure - duck and chicken as mains at dinner were equally tasty and full English in the morning started our day perfectly. Very comfortable (and quiet) room completed a most enjoyable (and very reasonably priced) visit.

Amazing dinner at The Tytherleigh, really friendly service with great vegetarian options, which can sometimes be lacking in Devon, so if you have a vegetarian in your party, then definitely try The Tytherleigh. Superb restaurant quality food combined with friendly service, we'll definitely be back.

First visit to the Tytherleigh Arms. Cosy, relaxed pub setting and the staff were all very welcoming. But the real draw here is the food. You know you’re onto something good when they bring out an amuse bouche, and this quail bonbon hit the spot. The homemade olive bread roll with tomato butter was sublime. I ended up having three courses simply because I wanted to try as many dishes as I could! It’s not a cheap place to eat but for food and drink of this quality, it was good value for money. This is definitely one of my top 10 meals of all time, and we will certainly be back.

Nice pub, good location. We had fish and chips and the waitress was happy to swap the chips for potatoes. The fish wasn’t a solid piece of fish and was more tail, see image. My son wasn’t keen on the menu as he’s only 10, however we got around that. Reception a bit frosty but after that all was good.

We had a fantastic meal here at the Tytherleigh Arms. The food was all exceptional and I strongly recommend having a meal here. The team were kind enough to deliver a 'happy birthday' plate on request and were very attentive throughout. Also they are dog friendly too, which enabled us to visit whilst on holiday in the area.

The food was outstanding as it always is. Service was friendly and on time. However the owner was a little rude to my daughter when she phoned to ask a special request for dinner.

The Tytherleigh has got to be the best place to eat down here by a mile. We have been many times (I'd say around 6!) and every single meal we have had has been fantastic. Every dish has been beautiful and the portions sizes are great. We always take people with us if they are visiting and every one of them has loved it. The atmosphere is super relaxed, yet cosy and luxurious. The staff are super friendly and they are very accommodating of our young child too. It's our go-to lunch or dinner place (we will be returning on my partners birthday in Feb) and we are so happy to have it nearby. Thanks for all that you do!

Mark and Rosie run the best restaurant in Devon . The menu was outstanding even by their usual high standards.Anybody who lives or visits this part of the world should take the time to have dinner at this fabulous restaurant.

We went as a group of 6 friends to celebrate all our birthdays throughout the year. Everything about the evening was perfect, the food, ambience, surroundings, service and staff, all 5 star. The finishing touch of superb service was the presentation of our beautifully arranged joint birthday candles (photo attached!). A really lovely evening, thank you Tytherleigh Arms.

Recommended by a friend and didn’t disappoint. The food was excellent the staff were so friendly, attentive and polite. The amuse-bouche was a lovely surprise and was stunning. I cannot recommend it enough when we are back in the area we will definitely revisit.

We wanted to support local business and look forward to a special meal, allegedly Michelin starred. Whilst our waitress was so warm and welcoming, the same could not be said for the food and for £30 for pork loin that was not accompanied by any hearty veg dish, it is a shame they are missing the mark of what could be a very proud producer of local delicacies. As one table of only 5 during the evening, we could tell that the lacking atmosphere was not by chance. We would love to go again incase it was a one off but the price and overall experience leave us looking elsewhere.

This was a hugely overpriced and highly average meal. I am baffled as to how this restaurant achieved a Michelin star? Our waitress was absolutely delightful and the saving grace of the evening. We had been so looking forward to our meal out but charging nearly £25 for an absolutely tiny vegetable pie seems ridiculous. The place was almost empty on a Friday night and half the dining area had been closed off so there was no real buzz or atmosphere. If you're in the area I would recommend you avoid and head to somewhere like The Cotley Inn where you will have wonderful food, well priced and atmosphere in abundance.

Enjoyed a delightful Sunday lunch of medium roast sirloin of beef cooked medium rare to perfection. Served with six different sesonal vegetables and a dark rich gravy sauce all sesoned pefectly. The staff were lovely the service low key frindly and efficient. Simply faultless. We will be returning next time we are visiting the area.

Highly recommend the Tytherleigh Arms for fabulous food as well as an excellent b&b. Their chicken liver parfait is the most delicious starter I’ve ever had - and that is no exaggeration! Every mouthful was a gastronomic treat of flavours and textures. The accommodation was comfortable with lots of luxury treats like homemade chocolate chip cookies. The breakfast was delicious and the owners couldn’t have been more helpful. If you’re down in Devon, you really need to come here… but don’t forget to book as it gets really busy.

This restaurant is really above the rest. The food ( from the complimentary amuse bouche to the wonderful panna cotta dessert) is sublime. The staff are attentive but not intrusive and the ambience is relaxed and pleasant. I cannot recommend this place enough.

The Tytherleigh Arms is a treasure . The rooms are clean bright and comfortable. Well appointed and fairly spacious. Tea and coffee with home made biscuits ( a promise of what to expect for dinner) is available in each room There is a patio area with garden chairs outside each room. Booking for dinner is advisable as the restaurant can get busy, not surprisingly as the food is excellent and there are interesting choices on the menu. I have eaten a fair few pates and chicken liver parfaits, but the offering from the Tytherleigh was in a class of its’ own. Served with a mini home made loaf, with a caramel topping , mini mushrooms and tiny pickled cauliflower florets, it was a thing of beauty and deliciousness. Though I really like meat, I have chosen a vegetarian option on the last two visits. These did not disappoint, they were innovative and delicious. The desserts are delicious with lovely choices. Breakfast is freshly cooked , and again excellent quality. A far cry from the ubiquitous breakfast buffets, each breakfast is freshly cooked , and not doing battle with the shared toaster, Your toast accompanies your breakfast so it arrives hot with your food. There may not be a stack of croissants or buns, but who needs these when excellent alternatives are on offer It is an oasis in a desert of fast food restaurants and places that serve meals covered in gloopy gravy.

We booked a nights accommodation at the Tytherleigh Arms. The room (which is in a separate block a few steps away from the restaurant/bar), was spacious, clean and contained everything we would need.
