Lovely meal served by a wonderful member of staff - Carson. The food was excellent and the service was even better. I would definitely dine here again thanks to the incredible hospitality and amazing dining experience.

Definitely not one I’d recommend now. Have had good food here in the past but today’s offering was awful. Extremely slow service from the kitchen and the restaurant wasn’t busy and when the meal arrived I had to send it back. Overcooked burnt dry sea bass, undercooked spuds.

Well, we nearly walked out upon arrival. We had to wait a couple of minutes to be greeted (no problem), so I picked up a menu that was lying on the reception table to have a look. Then someone arrived who seemed grumpy and basically told me off for picking up a menu......said something like ' well you only need 1 more menu as you've picked one up', then showed us to a table in a poor location (virtually in the doorway). My partner wanted to leave but I persuaded her we should stay. We think our conversation was overheard by a man who may have been the manager, who came over and politely took us to a much better table. After that, all good. Food was delicious and no further issues.

Lovely Sunday lunch - very tasty food! Although our opening experience wasn't so good. We arrived on time, had to wait a while to be seated so picked up a menu - was effectively 'told off' for doing so by a waiter who seemed to be in a grumpy mood, and placed into a poor location bt the door. A man (who I think was the manager) appeared at once and took us to a much bettee location. He was very nice. After that, all good. Excellent food. But 1st appearances count and my partner was set to leave after our frosty welcome.

We were a group of 4 adults meeting for a Sunday roast. Unfortunately we had to wait over an hour after ordering before our food arrived however it was a lovely meal. We all had roast beef which was delicious, as were the accompanying vegetables . A good portion size, but we needed to ask for more gravy. One of the best roast dinners I have had outside of my own home. A small deduction to our bill was applied due to the wait which we were satisfied with as the food was so good. The biggest gripe however is that there were 3 different groups of diners that brought their dogs with them into the restaurant area of the venue. 2 of the 3 dogs were very noisy and barking loudly very frequently. One of the dogs was barking aggressively at people and other dogs and even went to bite one of the people in my group causing bruising but luckily he retrieved his hand quickly enough so that the skin wasn’t broken . Nevertheless it was shocking. All of us in my group are dog lovers and have our own dogs (which we left at home ) , but the barking and behaviour of the dogs was unpleasant . When we mentioned our displeasure to the staff as we were leaving the response was that they are a dog friendly pub and in future we should ask to be seated away from dogs. Actually perhaps you should be more people friendly and only allow well behaved dogs into the bar area and not the restaurant!!!

First time there, they were very busy so food did take a long time but they did come and tell us, apologised and offered a free round of drinks. When the food came it was tasty and we were given more gravy as we asked for, some of the veg were a little over cooked, but good value. But, there were several dogs in the restaurant that were very noisy, one even snapped at my husband. I don’t have a problem with dogs, in fact I do dog sitting and one of our group is a qualified veterinary nurse, but I do expect a dog to be well behaved and under control in that environment. Maybe a designated area for owners with dogs would allow all customers to enjoy a meal.

Very nice village pub outside of Oxford. Very tasty food, great selection lagers and ales. Huge beer garden. Have to be nice in summer.

I am in the area on busines and staying nearby. I popped in without a booking it was busy but they found me a seat in the bar area. I ordered fish and chips and have to say for £17 it was bang average. Service e was good but I think it's pricey for such average food.

So I have very mixed feelings about this place! I came here last night with 2 friends. We had booked a table for 7pm, I got there a couple of minutes before 7 and was told our table wasn't ready yet. This was fine as I was still waiting for the rest of my party to arrived. About 705pm they had arrived and we stood by the entry table for about 15 more minutes. We were not assured that our table was being prepared or anything. We had to keep asking if our table was ready. Finally we were seated and left for a further 15 to 20 minutes. Our waitress did apologise and took our drinks order. We waited a further 20 to 25 mins for the waitress to come and take our order. Our mains took quite a while to arrive but the place was relatively busy so this was fine. After finishing our meals we waiting a further 30 minutes and had to then call the waitress over to collect our empty plates and request the dessert menu. We got our desserts and finished. By this time it is 10pm the whole place is empty aside from a small part of 2 older men. Again after waiting we call our waitress over and ask for the bill. She says "yes I'll bring it over, do you have any codes?" We say no and she advises us that we can get 40% off if we download the app but there's no point now as it takes time to be sent to us or something. We ignore her and download anyway (lucky we did). We then wait for her to bring the bill but then notice her leaving the building to go home. So then I looked around the pub, aside from those 2 older men there is not another soul in sight. We wait another 5 minutes and finally i see the bar man and ask him if we can pay the bill. He was great and got the bill up, scanned the code and comes over straight away to settle the bill. We left there at 1040pm and our table was booked for 7pm. We had mains and the mini pudding. We had 1 drink each that ordered at the bar whilst we were waiting to be seated and one of my my friends ordered one more drink when we were sat. Totally baffled by the extremely slow and odd service. The food however was amazing. I ordered the chicken Thai style curry and it was delicious, I told the bar man when he was settling our bill that the curry was incredible. Which is why I said I had mixed feelings about this place. I want to go back for the curry but the service was honestly diabolical.

Lovely pub. I really like your flagstones. Good service, nice staff, nice decor. However the garlic bread at lunch was toasted. Garlic bread isn't meant to be toasted but baked. Otherwise lunch was tasty.

Came in for dinner and drinks. A massive thanks to Jess and Jon and the chefs, excellent food and very friendly service.

On arrival (having booked a table) we were shown to our table and the first thing I heard was someone complaining about how long they had waited for their meal. Bearing in mind this was Easter Monday one would expect the establishment to be well staffed - this was not the case. There were two young ladies (who were absolutely delightful) run ragged serving a very full restaurant as well as (apparently) only one chef. We waited ages for our drinks, and then again for our food. When the food arrived the fries were overcooked and tasteless. Whilst we were waiting for a pudding for my grandson, one of the regulars started clearing tables and wiping them down ready for the next influx of customers - yes, a regular customer was clearing tables....... We had absolutely no issues with the serving staff and I was quite impressed at how they managed to keep calm with all the complaints regarding slow service. How could management allow this to happen on a BH Monday?!

Well we tried....very busy we were guided to a bar table. Starter was pretty luke warm when it eventually arrived. A much longer wait ensued for our main course (never arrived), this was over an hour after we ordered, the place steadily got busier and the two staff were obviously rushed off their feet fair play to them. Our mains got later and later, in the end we paid for what we'd consumed and left as we had over a 100 miles to travel. Shame really as the food being taken to other customers looked great. Let's get this straight, I have no complaints about the staff, they were clearly overwhelmed by what was happening.

Very nice quiet area for quick drinks and snacks with mates. Came in on Easter Monday to meet up my old fellas. Snacks offer 3 for 10 is actually very good. Massive garlic bread, scotch egg and fries with garlic mayo were very tasty. Coming back soon

Food was really nice. Atmosphere was amazing. The big let down was the sheer lack of staff. Bank Holiday Monday and 2 servers, one chef... for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner service. Is this even legal?! Apparently there's been very low retention of staff over the past few weeks. Overworked and tired staff apologising at every turn. Couldn't fault them. Food took too long but was very good when it came especially as there was one chef running the kitchen. It's a real shame. One of the regulars cleaned.. yes CLEANED, with product and everything - ours and other guests' tables because he felt so bad for the staff. There needs to be a serious overhaul of the running of the pub as it's a beautiful place, the staff they had on were so hard working, but it shouldn't be allowed to run like this - I'd come back but I'd call in advance to ask their staffing levels. Big well done to the team who worked today.

I visited "The Turnpike" over a decade ago. I used to reside in Begbroke, and I fondly recall visiting this establishment, where I must say I received fantastic service from Mary and enjoyed some delightful, quintessentially British cuisine.

Not enough bar staff waited a while for food statrer cold

My partner and I have been first time on Friday evening. Good bar snacks, reasonable prices of drinks , friendly staff..recommended.

My husband and I went here this evening to celebrate my birthday . He had requested a cosy table for 2 in the bar and had said what occasion was for . We were took through the bar to a table for two. ( certainly not cosy) no ambience and then told to order at bar when ready . Not a great start . There was only one other couple in the bar area eating . We were disappointed no steaks at all on menu so ordered burger and a duck and hoisin pizza . We waited a considerable time for our food joking what it would be like if it was busy. The burger was dry and chips cold . My pizza difficult to cut even with a steak knife , large pieces of duck scattered across pizza and no taste of hoisin . No check back throughout meal to check everything ok . Certainly won’t be returning . Disappointed doesn’t come close . At least manager took complaint seriously , apologised perfusely and reduced bill but would of been happier to have had a great night not a poor one.

We have previously enjoyed a great birthday celebration meal at The Turnpike back in September 2023. On that basis, my husband and I decided to visit for a second time for dinner on Monday 11th of March, how very disappointed we were. Whilst I can’t fault, the service and the friendliness of the two ladies, that were waiting tables that evening, I can fault, the quality of the food that was served - it really wasn’t great, and to add insult to injury - it was just lukewarm. Food needs to be served piping hot…. that’s what guests expect. Bearing in mind, we ordered quite simple dishes, I’m was initially amazed they got it so wrong. But after speaking to the waitress when paying the bill, it became apparent as to why it was such poor quality. They had no chef that evening and was just muddling through!! Had we been told at the beginning of our visit, a chef wasn’t in the kitchen, we would have decided to go elsewhere. Whilst I admire the staff for doing their best to save the situation of having no chef, patrons should be given all the information, so they can make an informed choice as to whether they want to dine or not. It feels deceitful to patrons not to be open and honest upfront. My husband ordered the chicken and mushroom pie priced at £17.25, which was just ok, not a lot of filling, but flavour wise is was alright - but served lukewarm and the spring onion mash as advertised on menu didn’t arrive. Instead, we were given a very lukewarm, odd colour, tiny portion of mash. The carrots definitely weren’t roasted in thyme. But they were kind enough to swap out the green beans for some hard green peas! I had chose the BBQ chick thigh skewers smothered in Korean style BBQ sauce and the side of slaw and triple cooked chips. Again, my food was lukewarm…. which, when it comes to chicken is actually dangerous. The meat on the skewers wasn’t smothered in sauce, nor were they chunky pieces of chicken thigh meat. Instead, we got 4 slivers of mainly fatty chicken skin which is really poor value when you bear in mind the skewer is priced at £17.95. And the side of advertised slaw wasn’t what we got, instead we got dry crunch bits…no pineapple & mango salsa in a lemongrass dressing for us. The two waitresses that was serving with quite busy, so we didn’t complain or make a fuss until we were asked how the food was, and then we were honest about our view on the food we’d been served. To be fair, we were given a bill after we challenged the first bill with a meal deducted, which felt a fair outcome for our experience. Overall, I’m just disappointed because it would be nice to have a local that serves decent food repeatedly.

We were on a journey since the morning, and it had been 3 hours since our last stop. We were ready for a meal. My husband's fish & chips was good. I ordered a veg burger that the menu said came on a toasted roll, with a guerkin, tomato, lettuce and skin potatoes. I was quite hungry and so dug in. Initially, I noticed the potatoes were not as described with skin, instead they were frozen type fries, but I was so hungry, I just let it go. But then, as I ate I realized the roll was not toasted, being so soft, a long-life type, and disintegrating in my hand. I looked forward to the guerkin and tomato, but they were not there. Disappointing. The message was passed on to the kitchen. While the service was courteous and efficient, there was no gesture from the kitchen or the house for a courtesy drink or offer to compensate. Given the more than £16 price, the veg burger quality was below average expected, and not as described.

Ate at this pub for the first time for "mothers day". We had the mothers day special for a set cost. The food was not good at all. Roast potatoes were overdone, oversalted and dry. Parsnips were overdone, fries were overcooked, crumble fruit was cold and returned to be reheated. Beef and turkey slices were wafer thin. Gravy was too salty. In summary the food was poor. Although service was polite, we were waiting too long between courses. We were offered a discount in recognition of issues mentioned, however not the experience we wanted for our mothers on mothers day.

Four of us went for lunch. We ordered two signature burgers and two haddock and spinach fishcakes. The waiter ordered two breaded cods on ciabatta bread instead of the fishcakes. He acknowledged that he wasn't sure what we had ordered but went ahead and ordered anyway. Chai latte was not prepared properly either. The chai powder was not stirred properly. Once the right food was served, the fishcakes were well presented and very tasty. They did not have burger sauce for the burger which made it quite dry.

We went for a family lunch for 4. We ordered 2 fishcakes, but got served fish sandwiches which we returned. The young waiter acknowledged that he did think he put through the wrong order. Once they served the fishcakes, they were delicious and well presented. The 2 signature burgers were dry and they did not have burger sauce. The chai latte was terrible. The powder wasn't mixed properly and was all settled at the bottom. We did have a discount as a result.

Had they been able to fulfill the promises on the menu we would’ve had great choice…. However a lot of the offerings were not available…… Two starters Four mains Two skewers Three lunch menu items Two steaks….. My starter was cold ….. Otherwise it was ok…

Feels like a gastro pub that has lost its way. Positives: The food was very tasty. Negatives: poor service, pop music playing, a bit cold in the restaurant. Not sure we will be back in a hurry!

I have previously visited the Turnpike and had a lovely meal, hence I bought my family here to celebrate my brothers birthday. Easy to book online. Arrived and were seated immediately however we then waited over 15mins before a waitress arrived at the table to take a drinks order. When we sat we were given menus but only when we went to order mains, were we told that at least 4 items on menu weren't available. Drinks ordered didn't arrive until 40mins after we sat down however the food arrived shortly afterwards. We couldn't fault the food, everyone enjoyed their meals and it was presented to a high standard and we were impressed by the deserts. Ordered a second round of drinks when our mains arrived however it was nearly the end of our meals before they arrived Slightly disappointing experience to celebrate my brother's birthday but the food was good.

Having eaten here several times in the past was very disappointed with this evening's visit. Very slow service, half the menu not available and the food that was, was cold. The guy serving our food told to me to be careful with the 'burning hot plat' with my skewers...well it was cold and the lamb was like warm. Having has to return our starters due to the temperature couldn't be bothered to do the same. No apology from staff or any form of compensation for a poor evening. I won't be returning.

Room was very cold. Took 50mins from arrival to getting starter then another 50mins for main meals to arrive. Pub was not that busy either. Food was very good and we will be back to this pub as it is a very good pub still to have a meal at.

Called in here as we were staying over in Oxford due to hospital treatment. Warm welcoming pub with lovely roaring open fires. Pleasantly surprised by the menu which has nice selection of starters and also skewers which we had (lamb). Food was obviously freshly prepared...

Visited today for Sunday roast, however were quite disappointed. One of us ordered the pork belly which was pretty much pure fat with very little meat. This got sent back in exchange for another meat. Portions were quite small and quality mediocre. The 2 slices of beef were the best bit. Yorkshire was frozen/reheated. Veg and potatoes undercooked. Certainly not worth the £22 per meal. Service wasn't great either with a drink being forgotten. Also lots of items on menu not available. We have over the years come here regularly for lunch, which has always been lovely. The burgers etc are streets ahead! but won’t be returning for a Sunday roast which frankly was a real disappointment.

Excellent food, and great service. We had young children with us, who were unused to eating out, and the staff were *very* patient and helpful.

Lunch for 5 was very fawlty towers (without the comedy). The service was delayed, impertinent and unapologetic. The chicken bacon and avocado salad was missing the bacon and avocado and the garlic bread was stone cold. My pizza was tough and one of the dishes was served ten minutes after the others.

Nice meal, unfortunately it's wasn't very warm in the building staff did bring and set up an electric fire for us .which helped so the staff were excellent.

Lovely place. Staff were friendly. Quite a lot of items not available but they were quick to point it out before you ordered. Was there with a friend and we both had the pie which was good...didn't come with chips but had nice mash. Decent sized pie...not the tiny ones you get in some places and also fully enclosed, rather than the kind in a dish with just a pie top. Would go back.

Ordered Roast lamb, explained I have a severe egg allergy no Yorkshire pudding with my roast.. After waiting almost 1 hour, and asking the waiter many times how long, they did not seem to care nor give a straight answer. No one mentioned ordering my lamb dish would take 30-40 minutes to cook, when I placed my order. To make my experience worse, the meal came with a Yorkshire pudding, explained once again about my allergy and the cross contamination of this, I will now need to wait for another hour for fresh dish. No ONE cared, no apology given. No one cared about my dietary needs Since the moment I walked in was looked upon, the staff did not make me feel comfortable, welcome at all. There was no gesture of good will given on their mistake. Racist Pub I feel everyone else who walked in got their food quickly, they ate and went. I was left in the corner in the cold with no care

Worst ever meal steak could not chew let alone cut would never recommend waited twenty minutes for a first welcoming drink very embarrassing keep sending messages definitely let me down when you are trying to impress and have a memorable birthday with your family everyone...

Attended for a works Christmas meal, Celine was fantastic and kept us updated on everything, regularly checked in for drinks etcs, and the food was beautiful (so thank you to the kitchen staff Jack, Michael & Kendall)! The process of booking the meal was also really easy and all orders were correct! Thank you to all staff for such a lovely evening, we all had a fantastic time and all said we would come again!

Came for a work's Christmas party. The food was good and the portions were generous. However, they only had a couple of turkey dishes left so not all of us could have it. They had also run out of Christmas pudding. A bit poor given we came for a Christmas meal and specified this in advance. The service was mixed. Our main waiter forgot 1 drink and we were missing a main and when we asked were told 'Hopefully it is coming' ?!. We had a table right below the spotlight lights which were very bright in our eyes but were told nothing could be done about it. His manner was very flat and we couldn't hear him. We then asked if they could be angled a different way and they were, good but I'm not sure it's up to us to suggest it. Another waitress was very pleasant and jolly. So, I'd return for the food if it was to be in stock but the service was not great.

The GM Ali was brilliant with my crazy kids. He said to us that it’s our night off and told us to enjoy ourselves. He bought them colouring and even took them to see the Christmas tree. He was great with them. So refreshing to see a manager not view children as a pain. If you have a family come and visit. Ali and the team will make you feel most welcome

I was ecstatic and happy to enjoy a meal at this restaurant. There are not enough stars to give them for their excellent, delicious and superb food that they serve. We were served by Victoria and the kitchen team was Jack, Kendall and Mario. What can I say, it was out of this world. Thank you for the excellent service.
