We make a special visit from Edinburgh to this Restaurant 5/6 times per year, the food is very good although expensive. I ordered and paid for Fish & Chips and Greek Salad with Keish ? for my Wife, with our drinks.£32.00 The young Man came to our Table to advise there was no Keish ? left. My Wife re-selected Greek Salad with Prawns & a portion of chips I was asked to go to the Counter with the Young Man to adjust the order and was asked to pay 95p difference between the cost of the Prawns against the cost of the Keish ? which I did The food was delivered to our table my Fish & Chips arriving first, my Wife advised that I start my meal while it was hot. My Wife's meal arrived and She was enjoying the Greek Salad but there was no Prawns. I was asked to go to the counter to pay for Prawns which had been omitted, I refused and my Wife had some of the salad, the meal was spoiled for her. No Prawns were offered. This spoiled our visit & our day out! She Managed to spend a further £35. in their shop. No more visits to this venue, complaint very badly handled.

Lovely cafe / restaurant with a nice selection of food on the menu. Eat on a Thursday between 4.30 & 6.30 and it’s £15.00 for 2. Cakes and scones are massive and look amazing. We had soup and sandwiches as well as a ploughman’s which were lovely. This and a black coffee came to just about £25! Not cheap but you get what you pay for and the quality appears great.

What a disappointment. This eatery has really gone downhill. Food advertised on menu not available, “we don’t do salads” and couldn’t accommodate a gluten free meal. Service was terrible and a 40 minute wait for a below average lunch. £2.25 for a glass of milk is just daylight robbery. It used to be the place to go for coffee, cake and great lunches but after this visit I won’t be back.

Not worth waiting in the queue. We ordered cheese and onion toasted sandwiches. The bread and onion relish was way too thick and clearly not toasted for long enough as the cheese wasn't even melted. The onion relish along with whatever they put on the bread just made both sandwiches soggy and were not fully cooked through. The salad garnish and accompanied bits were also just thrown on the plate. Given the wait and length of queue we did not venture to complian as we needed to be elsewhere on yhe day. Our overall experience was Very Disappointing as this cost over £24.00 for two sandwiches and drinks. We used to like coming here but it is now far too busy and standards have cleary slipped.

We had a little look around the garden centre and decided to have a nice coffee . The queue wasn’t particularly long, but it took an age to move. 20 mins we waited and all We wanted was a couple of coffees. Ordered 2 regular cappuccinos and a small water. Regular? If that’s a regular then I’d hate to see a small cup. My Granddaughter has bigger dolls cups. Almost £8 for these was a joke. Do your self a favour if you are in The Mayfield Garden Centre, forget this coffee shop pop around the corner to The Knowes Coffee Shop and Eatery.

I had the fish cake and what was supposed to be salad for £11 95. Although it was very enjoyable, I thought that a few leaves with a bit of cucumber and onion did not constitute a salad and for the price paid was very expensive.

The soup was served with a bread roll and, astonishingly, margarine. This is unheard of in any other cafe or restaurant. Bread rolls always come with butter unless you specifically ask for margarine. We had to go to the counter to ask for butter which they gave us. We noticed other tables were also being given margarine.

Had another bad experience today. Ordered two soups, latte' s and cakes. The soup was allegedly leak and potatoes. No taste and very little texture. This has happens before in the recent past so decided to send back to the kitchen with the waitress that brought it. No apologies and no refund so left after my wife gave up on her soup halfway through. Finished our latte and blue berry Blondie, checked to see if the waitress was about but nowhere in sight. Normally spend around £25 a week, and have really enjoyed most of what we had but recently it has become hit and miss. Decided too cash in our Reward points £8 on a hanging basket. Doubt if we will be back as it would appear it's take or leave it. Most staff are very friendly but sometimes overworked. Hope management can turn this place around but a lack of any apology does not give me much hope. They risk losing more customers if not.

My husband and I decided to have breakfast. Chose the Gardeners breakfast for £4.95. It was absolutely delicious. Bacon cooked perfectly, baked beans in it's own pot so it didn't run into the other food. Sausage delicious, tomato, real tomato cooked perfectly so it kept its flavour. Toast and butter. Coffee for 2 cost more than one meal but big cups. Would return again without hesitation. Highly recommend

Always liked coming to your restaurant and visited regularly. However after visiting recently we were most disappointed. No one was ready to meet us and we waited a while to be seated. The choice was so limited we couldn’t find anything we wanted but ordered anyway. We had coffee, I ordered a latte but the size of the cup was laughable to be honest for the price it was a disgrace. Many other local cafe’s are doing a sterling job, I know times are difficult but unless you improve things quickly I’m sure many customers will not come back.

After visiting the garden centre, then the fruit & Veg shop..I then looked forward to going through to the restaurant with my elderly mother (86 years old).. to be told at the counter..” could you come back in 10 mins as we are trying to catch up with things?”.. after 15mins we then returned, was taken to a table with a menu. After sitting for 25mins, I said to my mother..” don’t worry we will have afternoon tea elsewhere”.. we then left the restaurant extremely disappointed & may add will NOT be returning!!..My mother needed to take her afternoon medication & was unable to do so having no drinks or food being served.

I and my two friends ordered 3 cheese scones. The scones looked good when they came but sadly they were stodgy and had absolutely no taste of cheese in them. I was unable to carry on eating mine and my one friend left at least half of hers.I was in last Monday for breakfast - It is good that they have made the breakfast smaller (Gardeners Breakfast) to which items can be added. However my grand-daughter is a vegetarian and there is no option for her except the toast duo or a toasted teacake. There is no option on the new menu for scrambled egg unless you are a child. Two or three months ago you could order a child's scrambled egg but that has been put a stop to and you may only order if you have a child with you.A number of my friends in the older age group who regularly got together at The Topiary have all felt the same and they have all moved on to places like The Cross Keys where they feel their needs are catered for.Basic dishes like macaroni cheese have been removed from the menu. The soup is ONLY Tomato and Basil every day of the week and there is only one Chefs Special every day Fish and Chips. There is no variety to the menu any more and if this is not carefully looked at and taken on board you will be losing more customers.Such a pity to spoil what was a lovely dining experience whether it was for a scone and tea/coffee or a meal. The staff bend over backwards to assist customers and are always so friendly and welcoming but it is having a negative effect on them as well especially those who have been with the Coffee Shop for a long time.FIX THE PROBLEM SOON and get your old customers back!!!!!

For many years my husband and I have regularly enjoyed the vegetarian breakfast and have often told people it is the best we have ever had. After our first pre Covid visit recently the opposite is the case. The menu has now been changed to a Vegan breakfast - so no egg (we, like many vegetarians eat dairy) but we decided to give it a go. We had no idea what 'posh baked beans' are and I wish we had ordered in person and not through the app as we could have asked about them -they were absolutely awful! Butter beans in a tomato sauce with onions - why not ordinary baked beans which are Vegan anyway? The overall result was a meal that was too dry and food left over. Our tea arrived a bit too much in advance of our food, and that in addition to being under an air conditioning vent meant it was cold by the time the food arrived. If that had been the only issue we would have let it go.We did tell a member of staff as she cleared our plates and we were offered more tea and cake but didn't take up the offer. I can't fault the staff at all.I appreciate them catering to Vegans but why does it have to be at the cost of others like ourselves? We certainly won't be coming for breakfast again which is disappointing after so many years.I did make these comments by email to the company but didn't even get the courtesy of an acknowledgement!

Arrived at this garden center and had a walk around then spotted the café and walked to the waiting point and was met by the lady in charge and asked if i had booked we had not so i was taken to a table and left for over ten minutes before somebody came and took my order. The soup arrived and it was a very good sized bowl but the bread was of a poor quality could do with being served warm. Why do you only do tomato and basil soup try another flavor it is not a lot of effort to do two soups instead of the same soup day in and day out. A very efficient young man took our order he was smiley and talked to us and told us to call him if we needed any further assistance.

We have visited many a time before but this is the first during the restrictions.A table was booked outside as we normally do as we have two small dogs and we were looking forward to sitting outside under the shade of the the huge canvas umbrellas they have there.......but we were very surprised to find there was no shade at all on what was one of the hottest days of the year !!The menu was nothing like what we had experienced in the past, very simple meals and little choice! One of us had chosen the quiche and it was burnt on the top and limp but we decided not to complain at the time and spoil the occasion even more. This was an overall poor experience compared to before the pandemic other eating establishments have coped with the situation much better than Mayfield have. Not to have umbrellas outside was simply unforgivable !!

Poor service and poor choice. Where do we start. We waited 5 minutes to be seated despite there only being a few other customers seated at tables. Eventually just as we were about to walk out one of the staff saw us to the seat saying they running on a skeleton staff which we accept, but still no excuse for ignoring customers and leaving them waiting so long. When we did get seated you need to use an app to order food and that’s understandable with covid restrictions in place but the choices were poor to say the least and only ONE item that was gluten free - carrot cake. Nothing else. We had hoped to have breakfast there but owing to no gluten free options on the menu we had a coffee and went to another establishment that had masses of choice for gluten free food and of a high quality. All in really disappointing.

It was extremely tasty and served with a side of lovely bread. We had illy lattes and home made scones to follow. The scones are wonderful. A soft Centre with a crisp outside. To be recommended. The system in place for ordering, paying and serving is very effective and acceptable. My partner and granddaughter visited yesterday, they booked a table (for 13:15) in advance, and were shown to their table a few minutes after arrival.Due to Covid-19 restrictions their order for 2 prawn sandwiches, sweet potato fries, & coffee and soft drink was placed by mobile phone at 13:32. Payment was taken almost immediately, but no food was served. After about 15 minutes a member staff came to the table and retook the order manually as they were experiencing problems with the automated service.Food was finally served at 14:05, but still no drinks, after reminding the waiter that they still waiting for their drinks, coffee and soft drink was eventually served at 14:15, with not a word of apology for the delay.During this time a number of other people grew tired of the slow/poor service asked for refunds, and left the restaurant, some had meals partially served, others had received non of their order, or had not had their orders taken. The hole thing was a complete shambles.

We are pensioners and before pandemic my husband and I came to this restaurant for lunch quite often and really enjoyed our meal and service was great. Two weeks ago we went in for lunch were seated and asked for our order which was to be hot drinks and tray bakes we insisted we wanted something more and he assumed we would not be able to order with the phone and went off to get a printed menu, insulting, then forgot to come back for order my husband had to catch him. But recently long queues and very slow service is the norm. Today we went in for lunch and the lad who came to seat us asked if we had a reservation, we hadn’t, didn’t think we had to, then he told us we could only order hot drink and traybake, surprised was an understatement. We had to order right away for this. Others who came in after us were allowed to have anything off the menu a bit unfair. Not happy to be judged incapable of ordering or told what you can have to eat. Not sure we will be backThey should not assume all elderly people cannot use technology there are polite ways to ask.

I looked at my phone, got the website but couldn't figure out how to book a table. I kept looking and looking but gave up in frustration. I am aged 77 and not adept at using these phones. I was unable to book a table. I am able to phone and book any other restaurant, cafe, pub. This is the only place that demanded a booking to be made online. I think they are anti the elderly. I know many other elderly who would not be able to figure it out either. Shameful treatnent, prejudice against the older generation.

Had a breakfast here. The menu in this garden centre is good and has an all-round appeal to all tastes but hard to understand why, especially during the crisis, the food takes so long to prepare. Tea was served about 20 minutes before the food arrived - meant that the tea was finished or cold by the time the food arrived. And don’t bother with the bread that’s half toasted.

The situ is attractive and very roomy with a good variety of food and drink on offer, since there were 8 of us it took some time to determine the selection the format being self-service. However the staff are friendly and attentive and most of the cooked food looks to be freshly prepared. The full Breakfasts are tasty and varied from Black Pudding, Bacon, Eggs, Beans, Toast etc etc and there are specialities such as mashed Avocado and Eggs, the Bacon and Sausage Baps are available or in Sandwich form if required. There is also a wide variety of cakes, pastries etc etc on offer plus a excellent range of hot and non-alcoholic drinks. For sure well worth a visit and the bonus is too shop in the adjacent centre with a multitude of items on offer

Outstanding good points are the really charming young staff (well done team) however the self service system often involves long periods of queuing which is a shame. Not sure how you get round this but it can be very annoying. The food is of fairly good quality, we recently enjoyed a fresh cod mornay with vegetables and the Asian deli platter which was an original selection of vegetable tempura (crispy and delicious), pakora dips, salad and flat bread. Unexpectedly good and thoroughly enjoyable. Noticed others eating the afternoon tea which looked HUGE. We felt it offered good value and did I mention the lovely staff?

Having frequented this place for the last few months I can say that it is a lovely place & wonderful food but the queue's are disgraceful. It can take over 20 mins from joining the queue to getting served. (that's at 11.00 am on a Thursday morning) The restaurant is part of a Garden Center so naturally attracts people of a "certain age" Why then are the elderly customers forced to stand & queue for such unacceptable times? I often visit another establishment of this company at Carlisle and find that there are no problems with queues. Perhaps Kelso management needs to take a visit there and see how they manage to keep queues to a minimum.

This restaurant is unsuitable for those who are disabled or elderly. The queue to place an order is long and very slow. We gave up and will not be back. The owners are behind the times. Menus on the tables, numbers oon the table and a quick visit to pay are needed. It works well where we went after this.

Visited for lunch in this light and airy establishment, self service fast & efficient although you order hot meals at the counter they bring it to you, the quality is excellent & well presented the service is actually outstanding, good value probably that's why it's so popular

Decent food and no long wait for it. My gripe is that there are no menus on the table. You have to look over the heads of other people and queue to place your order. Not good for older customers or those with mobility issues. There are better ways of doing this.

I've been here a couple of times, shopping at the Garden Centre and then eating at the restaurant. Very friendly and professional service both times but the last in particular. One of our group is awaiting an operation and unable to eat certain foods without being in extreme pain and vomiting. The counter staff were really helpful in finding out ingredients for us and the chef actually whipped something up specially to make sure our friend wasn't ill. Wonderful customer service.

We dropped in hear after a look around the garden centre. Our food was really good how ever a couple of little niggles from me. Waiting time to order was quite bad two folk serving one on the till. Waited a good ten mins to be served now put that into context I had hardly sat down when my food arrived. The egg sandwich my wife had looked well filled but she actually said it was more a mayonnaise sandwich than an egg one. But a well presented one. Another wee niggle. £2.15 for a small bottle of diet coke. I know you have to make a living but that's a serious mark up.

Came here for a family Sunday lunch. The food itself was delicious, I had roast turkey, which came with a good selection of veg, lots of meat, tasty gravy! This was a special Sunday roast, at good price, but the rest of the menu was pretty expensive and elaborate. Not much basic food available. The cakes all looked delicious, and a good selection, but ridiculously expensive!

We visit regularly for coffee and scones which are fantastic. Daily changing lunch specials are very good value. Very popular so tends to have quite long queues for service but very good and efficient staff mean served fairly quickly. Comfortable bright and pleasant venue.

You can't go wrong with visiting this coffee shop. Staff are very welcoming and bend over backwards to provide good service. However I cannot understand why Klondyke have a public wifi which is encrypted all the time. I have spoken to a number of people (staff) to whom I was referred and all they do is shrug their shoulders and the situation remains the same NO WIFI!!! Another problem that needs addressing is blinds on the windows as when the sun is shining it is almost impossible to sit near the windows because of the bright light in your face,

I often come here on my long breaks off work, today I came in with a friend and her dog, bearing in mind that this is a garden centre and most garden centres welcome dogs. As they have a large array of dog products... apparently you are only allowed dogs into the craft department and not the cafe and we were informed that this time it was okay this time but next time we would have to sit outside with the dog. It’s a shame that the manager doesn’t come here over and inform you of this but instead he or she sends over one of the staff to. No clear signage telling you no dogs. Coffee wasn’t the best and the cake tasted stale.

I had a dental appointment this morning in the Scottish Borders and hubby and I decided to stop at the Topiary Coffee Shop and Restaurant for lunch on the way back to Northumberland....Big mistake. We both decided to have Macaroni cheese with chips and coleslaw, a coffee and a diet coke which came to 20.20 if I recall (didn't want a receipt). The chips were disgusting, more like potato skins than chips, the wee bowl which held the macaroni was piping hot but sadly the contents were not and the coleslaw was served in a thing like a teacup from a child's tea set. Neither of us ate the chips as if we had wanted potato skins we would have ordered that. I saw one of the girls going by and asked her to come over and I complained about the CHIPS? She said, that's funny someone said yesterday that they were like potato skins and not chips, must be a bad batch. A, it's not funny and B if they were complained about yesterday and were a bad batch why are they still serving them today. She said sorry and hoped we would be back, to which I replied we may be back for a coffee but definitely not for a meal. She said oh the meals are lovely here, errrmm, don't think so. She asked if we would like a wee scone to take home but we declined. Quite expensive for 2 bowls of not very hot macaroni, a small amount of coleslaw and 2 drinks.

Been out with my family and friends over the last few days. This was the most expensive, yet the quality was not as good as other places. The cakes are great but you pay for it! Enjoyed the food, so did the kids but a similar meal was £10 less (overall) yesterday and the quality far superior there and we got table service rather than self service. Nonetheless the staff here are great and a return visit is imminent.

Needed time to kill before opening of auction at Springwood Park. Had stopped coming here due to past experiences. Thought a quick cuppa would be OK. My husband came back with two filter coffees, both the size of a Demi tasse. He paid £3.98 for two tiny cups of flavoured water. Not even good for a cuppa anymore. It's a garden centre, not a high class exclusive restaurant !!! Overpriced, noisy, kids run under your feet, and no better than the food in local hotels which are cheaper and classier.

The last time we ate here the salad was awful so we thought we would try the breaded fish and macaroni and cheese.Well after nearly half an hour we asked one of the waiters if the chef was away catching the fish but anyway this piece of overcooked dried up fish arrived with half cold chips coleslaw and think it was mushy peas. on to the tasteless macaroni with coleslaw and chips a very strange combination but the person who though it up probably has a degree. did ask if i could have battered fish but that would not be possible according to the girl behind the counter think we will be going elsewhere.

My wife and I made one of our very regular visits for coffee and tray bakes yesterday having recently returned from holiday. Very shocked to note that the tray bakes have had a substantial price increase, a significant size reduction and many on display were edge and corner pieces. Seems like about an effective 40-50% price increase. Many other items on the “new menu” seem to also have large built in price increases. Settled just for coffee and will not be buying cakes or tray bakes at these high prices.

We go to the coffee shop every week but was very disapointed today they have cut back on portions, husband had the soup combo and only got hafe a sandwich which is a joke never heard the likes, we soend alot of money in the garden centre aswell but will not be doing so in the future if things don,t change, as for the macaroni cheese you only get hafe of what you used to and on a plate not in a bowl it looks lost, the powers to be want to look at customer before profit its a shame as it used to be so nice, cut down on the size of bread so so disapointed.
